Temperature- and density-dependent vibrational relaxation data for the v6 asymmetric stretch of W(CO)6 in supercritical fluoroform (trifluoromethane, CHF3) are presented and compared to a recent theory of solute vibrational relaxation. The theory, which uses thermodynamic and hydrodynamic conditions of the solvent as input parameters, shows very good agreement in reproducing the temperature- and density-dependent trends of the experimental data with a minimum of adjustable parameters. Once a small number of parameters are fixed by fitting the functional form of the density dependence, there are no adjustable parameters in the calculations of the temperature dependence. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

We report the far-infrared measurements of the electron cyclotron resonance absorption in n-type Si/Si0. 62Ge0.38 and Si0.94Ge0.06 /Si0. 62Ge0.38 modulation- doped heterostructures grown by rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition. The strained Si and Si0.94Ge0.06 channels were grown on relaxed Si0.62Ge0.38 buffer layers, which consist of 0.6 μm uniform Si0.62Ge0.38 layers and 0.5 μm compositionally graded relaxed SiGe layers from 0% Ge to 38 % Ge. The buffer layers were annealed at 800 °C for 1 hr to obtain complete relaxation. The samples had 100 Å spacers and 300 Å 2×1019 cm-3 n-type supply layers on the tops of the 75 Å channels. The far-infrared measurements of electron cyclotron resonance were performed at 4K with the magnetic field of 4 – 8 Tesla. The effective masses determined from the slope of center frequency of absorption peak vs applied magnetic field plot are 0.20 mo and 0.19 mo for the two dimensional electron gases in the Si and Si0.94Ge0.06 channels, respectively. The Si effective mass is very close to that of two dimensional electron gas in Si MOSFET (0.198mo). The electron effective mass of Si0.94Ge0.06 is reported for the first time and about 5 % lower than that of pure Si.

The orientational relaxation dynamics of water confined between mica surfaces is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The study illustrates the wide heterogeneity that exists in the dynamics of water adjacent to a strongly hydrophilic surface such as mica. Analysis of the survival probabilities in different layers is carried out by normalizing the corresponding relaxation times with bulk water layers of similar thickness. A 10-fold increase in the survival times is observed for water directly in contact with the mica surface and a non-monotonic variation in the survival times is observed moving away from the mica surface to the bulk-like interior. The orientational relaxation time is highest for water in the contact layer, decreasing monotonically away from the surface. In all cases the ratio of the relaxation times of the 1st and 2nd rank Legendre polynomials of the HH bond vector is found to lie between 1.5 and 1.9 indicating that the reorientational relaxation in the different water layers is governed by jump dynamics. The orientational dynamics of water in the contact layer is particularly novel and is found to undergo distinct two-dimensional hydrogen bond jump reorientational dynamics with an average waiting time of 4.97 ps. The waiting time distribution is found to possess a long tail extending beyond 15 ps. Unlike previously observed jump dynamics in bulk water and other surfaces, jump events in the mica contact layer occur between hydrogen bonds formed by the water molecule and acceptor oxygens on the mica surface. Despite slowing down of the water orientational relaxation near the surface, life-times of water in the hydration shell of the K ion are comparable to that observed in bulk salt solutions. Layer-wise, distance-dependent orientational relaxation of water confined in reverse micelles (RM) is studied using theoretical and computational tools. We use both a newly constructed ``spins on a ring'' (SOR) Ising-type model (with Shore-Zwanzig rotational dynamics) and atomistic simulations with explicit water. Our study explores the effect of reverse micelle size and role of intermolecular correlations, compromised by the presence of a highly polar surface, on the distance (from the interface) dependence of water relaxation. The ``spins on a ring'' model can capture some aspects of distance dependence of relaxation, such as acceleration of orientational relaxation at intermediate layers. In atomistic simulations, layer-wise decomposition of hydrogen bond formation pattern clearly reveals that hydrogen bond arrangement of water at a certain distance away from the surface can remain frustrated due to the interaction with the polar surface head groups. This layer-wise analysis also reveals the presence of a non-monotonic slow relaxation component which can be attributed to this frustration effect and which is accentuated in small to intermediate size RMs. For large size RMs, the long time component decreases monotonically from the interface to the interior of the RMs with slowest relaxation observed at the interface. The thermal transitions in the copolymer of 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated to understand its use in microstereolithography. The glass transition temperature and the effect of interaction on this transition process was investigated by means of temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC). The heat capacities were determined and PHDDA rich phases showed lower heat capacity than PMMA rich phases. The frequency dependence of glass transitions were studied by varying the modulation period of TMDSC and confirmed by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Vogel Fulcher Tammann Hesse (VFTH) parameters of homo and copolymers have also been reported.

The confinement of a polymer to volumes whose characteristic linear dimensions are comparable to or smaller than its bulk radius of gyration R-G,R-bulk can produce significant changes in its static and dynamic properties, with important implications for the understanding of single-molecule processes in biology and chemistry. In this paper, we present calculations of the effects of a narrow rectangular slit of thickness d on the scaling behavior of the diffusivity D and relaxation time tau(r) of a Gaussian chain of polymerization index N and persistence length l(0). The calculations are based on the Rouse-Zimm model of chain dynamics, with the pre-averaged hydrodynamic interaction being obtained from the solutions to Stokes equations for an incompressible fluid in a parallel plate geometry in the limit of small d. They go beyond de Gennes' purely phenomenological analysis of the problem based on blobs, which has so far been the only analytical route to the determination of chain scaling behavior for this particular geometry. The present model predicts that D similar to dN(-1) ln(N/d(2)) and tau(r) similar to N(2)d(-1) ln(N/d(2))(-1) in the regime of moderate confinement, where l(0) << d < R-G,R-bulk. The corresponding results for the blob model have exactly the same power law behavior, but contain no logarithmic corrections; the difference suggests that segments within a blob may actually be partially draining and not non-draining as generally assumed.

The effects of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the concentration fluctuations, interfacial driven elasticity, phase morphology, and local segmental dynamics of chains for near-critical compositions of polystyrene/poly(vinyl to methyl ether) (PS/PVME) blends were systematically investigated using dynamic shear rheology and dielectric spectroscopy. The contribution of the correlation length (xi) of the concentration fluctuations to the evolving stresses was monitored in situ to probe the different stages of demixing in the blends. The classical upturn in the dynamic moduli was taken as the rheological demixing temperature (T-rheo), which was also observed to be in close agreement with those obtained using concentration fluctuation variance, <(delta phi)(2)>, versus temperature curves. Further, Fredrickson and Larson's approach involving the mean-field approximation and the double-reptation self-concentration (DRSC) model was employed to evaluate the spinodal decomposition temperature (T-s). Interestingly, the values of both T-rheo and T-s shifted upward in the blends in the presence of MWNTs, manifesting in molecular-level miscibility. These phenomenal changes were further observed to be a function of the concentration of MWNTs. The evolution of morphology as a function of temperature was studied using polarized optical microscopy (POM). It was observed that PVME, which evolved as an interconnected network during the early stages of demixing, coarsened into a matrix-droplet morphology in the late stages. The preferential wetting of PVME onto MWNTs as a result of physicochemical interactions retained the interconnected network of PVME for longer time scales, as supported by POM and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images. Microscopic heterogeneity in macroscopically miscible systems was studied by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. The slowing of segmental relaxations in PVME was observed in the presence of both ``frozen'' PS and MWNTs interestingly at temperatures much below the calorimetric glass transition temperature (T-g). This phenomenon was observed to be local rather than global and was addressed by monitoring the evolution of the relaxation spectra near and above the demixing temperature.

Here, we present the results of temperature dependent dielectric studies on chemical solution processed Zr-doped BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films deposited on Pt/Si substrates. We find that in contrast to the undoped BFO films, Zr doping at Fe-site suppresses the low frequency dielectric relaxation originating from the grain boundaries, attributed to the increased dipolar rigidity due to stronger Zr-O bonds. Temperature dependent dc conductivity obtained from impedance and modulus analyses shows two distinct conduction processes occurring inside the grains. At temperature below similar to 423K, conductivity is nearly temperature independent, while in the high temperature regime (above similar to 423K), conduction is governed by the long range movement of oxygen vacancies with an activation energy of similar to 1eV. Longitudinal relaxation due to cross-correlation between dipolar ((HN-1H alpha)-H-1) and amide-proton chemical shift anisotropy (H-1(N) CSA) has been measured in a model tripeptide Piv-(L)Pro-(L)Pro-(L)Phe-OMe. The peptide bond across diproline segment is known to undergo cis/trans isomerization and only in the cis form does the lone Phe amide-proton become involved in intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The strength of the cross correlated relaxation interference is found to be significantly different between cis and trans forms, and this difference is shown as an influence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding on the amide-proton CSA. Nanoparticles of different shapes can induce peculiar morphologies in binary polymer blends depending on their position. It is envisaged that the increased yield stress of the filled phase slows down the relaxation resulting in arresting the peculiar morphologies which otherwise is thermodynamically unfavourable due to the increased interfacial area. This essentially means that the highly irregular structures can be preserved even without altering the interfacial tension between the phases! On the other hand, in the case of interfacially adsorbed particles, the resulting solid-like interface can also preserve the irregular structures. These phenomenal transitions in filled blends are very different from the classical copolymer compatibilized polymer blends. Moreover, these irregular structures can further pave way in designing conducting polymer blends involving conducting nanoparticles and revisiting our understanding of the concept of double percolation!

Naturally formed CdTe/CdS core/shell quantum dot (QD) structures in the presence of surface stabilizing agents have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Size and temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra have been investigated to understand the exciton-phonon interaction, and radiative and nonradiative relaxation of carriers in these QDs. The PL of these aqueous CdTe QDs (3.0-4.8 nm) has been studied in the temperature range 15-300 K. The strength of the exciton-LO-phonon coupling, as reflected in the Huang-Rhys parameter `S' is found to increase from 1.13 to 1.51 with the QD size varying from 4.8 to 3.0 nm. The PL linewidth (FWHM) increases with increase in temperature and is found to have a maximum in the case of QDs of 3.0 nm in size, where the exciton-acoustic phonon coupling coefficient is enhanced to 51 mu eV K-1, compared to the bulk value of 0.72 mu eV K-1. To understand the nonradiative processes, which affect the relaxation of carriers, the integrated PL intensity is observed as a function of temperature. The integrated PL intensity remains constant until 50 K for relatively large QDs (3.9-4.8 nm) beyond which a thermally activated process takes over. Below 150 K, a small activation energy, 45-19 meV, is found to be responsible for the quenching of the PL. Above 150 K, the thermal escape from the dot assisted by scattering with multiple longitudinal optical (LO) phonons is the main mechanism for the fast quenching of the PL. Besides this high temperature quenching, interestingly for relatively smaller size QDs (3.4-3.0 nm), the PL intensity enhances as the temperature increases up to 90-130 K, which is attributed to the emission of carriers from interface/trap states having an activation energy in the range of 6-13 meV.

While absorption and emission spectroscopy have always been used to detect and characterize molecules and molecular complexes, the availability of ultrashort laser pulses and associated computer-aided optical detection techniques allowed study of chemical processes directly in the time domain at unprecedented time scales, through appearance and disappearance of fluorescence from participating chemical species. Application of such techniques to chemical dynamics in liquids, where many processes occur with picosecond and femtosecond time scales lead to the discovery of a host of new phenomena that in turn led to the development of many new theories. Experiment and theory together provided new and valuable insight into many fundamental chemical processes, like isomerization dynamics, electron and proton transfer reactions, vibrational energy and phase relaxation, photosynthesis, to name just a few. In this article, we shall review a few of such discoveries in attempt to provide a glimpse of the fascinating research employing fluorescence spectroscopy that changed the field of chemical dynamics forever.

Lithium silicophosphate glasses have been prepared by a sol-gel route over a wide range of compositions. Their structural and electrical properties have been investigated. Infrared spectroscopic studies show the presence of hydroxyl groups attached to Si and P. MAS NMR investigations provide evidence for the presence of different phosphatic units in the structure. The variations of de conductivities at 423 K and activation energies have been studied as a function of composition, and both exhibit an increasing trend with the ratio of nonbridging oxygen to bridging oxygen in the structure. Ac conductivity behavior shows that the power law exponent, s, is temperature dependent and exhibits a minimum. Relaxation behavior has been examined in detail using an electrical modulus formalism, and modulus data were fitted to Kohlraush-William-Watts stretched exponential function. A structural model has been proposed and the unusual properties exhibited by this unique system of glasses have been rationalized using this model. Ion transport in these glasses appears to be confined to unidimensional conduits defined by modified phosphate chains and interspersed with unmodified silica units.
