Kinetic information on the resinification of furfuryl alcohol has been derived from the rate of increase of color intensity measured with a photoelectric colorimeter, the resinification being carried out isothermally in Clark-Lubs aqueous buffer solutions in the pH range of 1.0-2.2. The activation energy for polymerization is found to increase exponentially with pH. The time required for emulsification (which is quickly followed by separation of resin layer) to occur in an aqueous solution of furfuryl alcohol also increases exponentially with pH, but it decreases exponentially with temperature. This is described quantitatively by a single expression.

The kinetics of pseudocumene oxidation in the vapor phase with tin vanadate as catalyst have been studied over the following ranges of the variables: Oxygen concentration, 0.909 to 2.857 mole/m3; pseudocumene concentration, 0.071 to 0.125 mole/m3; temperature, 260 to 320°C; space time, 22.5 to 90 × 104 g. catalyst/mole sec. Oxidation-reduction models have been found to describe the kinetics adequately. The mechanism is found to remain the same throughout the temperature range covered.

Kinetic information on the formation of poly(vinyl formal) by the reaction of poly(vinyl acetate) and formaldehyde in presence of aqueous acid has been derived from the spectroscopic analysis of polymer samples after different periods of reaction. The hydroxyl content of poly(vinyl formal) is found to be nearly independent of reaction time and only slightly affected by temperature while the fall of acetate content and the increase in formal content are most rapid in the initial period and are largely influenced by temperature. The rate expression formulated on the assumption that the formalization reaction is of first order with respect to both poly(vinyl acetate) and formaldehyde explains the observed variation of polymer composition with reaction time. The activation energy for the reaction is found to be 17.3 kcal/mol.

The photopolymerization of methyl, ethyl, butyl, and hexyl methacrylates in solution was studied. The effect of initial initiator and monomer concentrations on the time evolution of polymer concentration (M) over bar (n) and PDI was examined. The reversible chain addition and beta-scission, and primary radical termination steps were included in the mechanism along with the classical steps. The rate equations were derived using continuous distribution kinetics and solved numerically to fit the experimental data. The regressed rate coefficients compared well with the literature data. The model predicted the instantaneous increase in (M) over bar (n) and PDI to steady state values. The rate coefficients exhibited a linear increase with the size of alkyl chain of the alkyl methacrylates.

We show that data from recent experiments carried out on the kinetics of DNA escape from alpha-hemolysin nanopores [M. Wiggin, C. Tropini, C. T. Cossa, N. N. Jetha, and A. Marziali, Biophys. J. 95, 5317 (2008)] may be rationalized by a model of chain dynamics based on the anomalous diffusion of a particle moving in a harmonic well in the presence of a delta function sink. The experiments of Wiggin found, among other things, that the occasional occurrence of unusually long escape times in the distribution of chain trapping events led to nonexponential decays in the survival probability, S(t), of the DNA molecules within the nanopore. Wiggin ascribed this nonexponentiality to the existence of a distribution of trapping potentials, which they suggested was theresult of stochastic interactions between the bases of the DNA and the amino acids located on the surface of the nanopore. Based on this idea, they showed that the experimentally determined S(t) could be well fit in both the short and long time regimes by a function of the form (1+t/tau)(-alpha) (the so called Becquerel function). In our model, S(t) is found to be given by a Mittag-Leffler function at short times and by a generalized Mittag-Leffler function at long times. By suitable choice of certain parameter values, these functions are found to fit the experimental S(t) even better than the Becquerel function. Anomalous diffusion of DNA within the trap prior to escape over a barrier of fixed height may therefore provide a second, plausible explanation of the data, and may offer fresh perspectives on similar trapping and escape problems.

Barrierless chemical reactions have often been modeled as a Brownian motion on a one-dimensional harmonic potential energy surface with a position-dependent reaction sink or window located near the minimum of the surface. This simple (but highly successful) description leads to a nonexponential survival probability only at small to intermediate times but exponential decay in the long-time limit. However, in several reactive events involving proteins and glasses, the reactions are found to exhibit a strongly nonexponential (power law) decay kinetics even in the long time. In order to address such reactions, here, we introduce a model of barrierless chemical reaction where the motion along the reaction coordinate sustains dispersive diffusion. A complete analytical solution of the model can be obtained only in the frequency domain, but an asymptotic solution is obtained in the limit of long time. In this case, the asymptotic long-time decay of the survival probability is a power law of the Mittag−Leffler functional form. When the barrier height is increased, the decay of the survival probability still remains nonexponential, in contrast to the ordinary Brownian motion case where the rate is given by the Smoluchowski limit of the well-known Kramers' expression. Interestingly, the reaction under dispersive diffusion is shown to exhibit strong dependence on the initial state of the system, thus predicting a strong dependence on the excitation wavelength for photoisomerization reactions in a dispersive medium. The theory also predicts a fractional viscosity dependence of the rate, which is often observed in the reactions occurring in complex environments.

The objective of the present study is to develop the reaction mechanism and kinetics of photoreduction of NO by CO. For this purpose, the reactions were conducted in the presence of Pd-ion-substituted nano-TiO2, Ti1-xPdxO2-delta, which was synthesized via a solution combustion method. The photocatalytic activity was investigated with unsubstituted TiO2, 1% Pd/TiO2(imp), and Ti1-xPdxO2-delta (where x = 0.05-0.3). No appreciable NO conversion was observed over unsubstituted TiO2, although, despite competitive adsorption of NO and CO on the Pd2+ sites, there was a significant reduction of NO over Ti1-xPdxO2-delta. The kinetic model showed that the enhanced catalytic activity is due to the NO photodissociation at the oxide-ion vacancy.

The transesterification of methyl butyrate, ethyl butyrate and butyl butyrate to geranyl butyrate was investigated in supercritical carbon dioxide. The effect of chain length of the butyrate on the rate of transesterification was investigated. The initial rates followed the trend: ethyl butyrate < butyl butyrate < methyl butyrate. The transesterification of butyl butyrate to geranyl butyrate in various supercritical fluids such as ethylene, methane, ethane was also examined. The initial rate of transesterification of butyl butyrate in different supercritical fluids followed the order: ScCO2 < ScC2H6 < ScC2H4 < ScCH4. The highest initial rate was obtained in supercritical methane and the reasons for this observation were proposed. The Ping-Pong Bi-Bi model with inhibition by both acid and alcohol was used to model the experimental data and determine the kinetics of the reaction. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We show that a model of target location involving n noninteracting particles moving subdiffusively along a line segment (a generalization of a model introduced by Sokolov et al. [Biophys. J. 2005, 89, 895.]) provides a basis for understanding recent experiments by Pelta et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 2007, 98, 228302.] on the kinetics of diffusion-limited gel degradation. These experiments find that the time t(c) taken by the enzyme thermolysin to completely hydrolyze a gel varies inversely as roughly the 3/2 power of the initial enzyme concentration [E]. In general, however, this time would be expected to vary either as [E](-1) or as [E](-2), depending on whether the Brownian diffusion of the enzyme to the site of cleavage took place along the network chains (1-d diffusion) or through the pore spaces (3-d diffusion). In our model, the unusual dependence of t(c) on [E] is explained in terms of a reaction-diffusion equation that is formulated in terms of fractional rather than ordinary time derivatives.

Coccinia indica agglutinin (CIA) is a chitooligosaccharide-specific lectin with two binding sites/homodimer of M(r) 32,000. Quenching studies implied tryptophan involvement in binding activity, which was confirmed by chemical modification experiments (A. R. Sanadi and A. Surolia, submitted for publication). Binding of 4-methylumbelliferyl chitooligosaccharides has been carried out to study their binding by CIA. Reversal experiments confirm the validity of the data previously obtained (A. R. Sanadi and A. Surolia, submitted for publication) from intrinsic fluorescence studies. Surprisingly, unlike wheat germ agglutinin, there is no consistent thermodynamic effect of the chromophoric label on binding activities as compared with the native sugars. From the changes in the optical properties of the chromophoric group upon binding to CIA, it has been possible to confirm that the tryptophan located in the binding site is closest to the fourth subsite. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the binding of the labeled tetrasaccharide is very strongly entropically driven, with the terminal, nonreducing sugar residue protruding from the binding pocket. The results of stopped-flow kinetic studies on the binding of the chromophoric trisaccharide by CIA show that the mechanism of binding is a one-step process.

The oxidation rate of a cuprous sulfide pellet suspended in a stream of air was followed by measuring the evolution of SO2 titrimetrically. Thin thermocouples embedded in the center of the sample recorded the variation of temperature during oxidation. The reaction was found to be topochemical and the sample temperature was found to be higher than its surroundings initially for about half an hour. After this initial period, the sample temperature decreased to that of the surroundings and remained constant during the rest of the period of over 5 hr. The apparent activation energy from the experimental data was found to be different for the initial (nonisothermal) and subsequent (isothermal) periods. Rate controlling mechanisms for these two intervals have been proposed based on interface chemical reaction, mass transfer resistance, and heat transfer concepts. Fair agreement is found between the theoretical rates based on transport mechanisms and those obtained experimentally

1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were copolymerized in different weight ratios using UV light induced photo-polymerization to give poly(HDDA-co-MMA). Differential scanning calorimetry shows that copolymer was formed. The thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric studies with different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were adopted to evaluate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These analyses are important to study the binder removal from 3D-shaped ceramic objects made by techniques like Solid free form fabrication. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Implications of nanostructuring and conductive carbon interface on lithium insertion/removal capacity and insertion kinetics innanoparticles of anatase polymorph of titania is discussed here.Sol-gel synthesized nanoparticles of titania (particle size similar to 6 nm) were hydrothermally coated ex situ with a thin layer of amorphous carbon (layer thickness: 2-5 nm) and calcined at a temperature much higher than the sol-gel synthesis temperature. The carbon-titania composite particles (resulting size similar to 10 nm) displayed immensely superior cyclability and rate capability (higher current rates similar to 4 g(-1)) compared to unmodified calcined anatase titania. The conductive carbon interface around titania nanocrystal enhances the electronic conductivity and inhibits crystallite growth during electrochemical insertion/removal thus preventing detrimental kinetic effects observed in case of unmodified anatase titania. The carbon coating of the nanoparticles also stabilized the titania crystallographic structure via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. This resulted in a decrease in the irreversible capacity observed in the case of nanoparticles without any carbon coating.

A commercial acrylic fiber with 92% (w/w) acrylonitrile content was partially hydrolyzed converting a fraction of the nitrile (-CN) groups to carboxylic acid (-COOH) groups, to coat the fiber with polyethylenimine (PEI) resin, which was then crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and further quaternized with ethyl chloroacetate to produce a novel strong-base anionic exchanger in the form of fiber. Designated as PAN(QPEI.XG)(Cl-), the fibrous sorbent was compared with a commercial bead-form resin Amberlite IRA-458(Cl-) in respect of sorption capacity, selectivity, and kinetics for removal of silver thiosulfate complexes from aqueous solutions. Though the saturation level of [Ag(S2O3)(2)](3-) on PAN(QPEI.XG)(Cl-) is considerably less than that on IRA-458(Cl-), the gel-coated fibrous sorbent exhibits, as compared to the bead-form sorbent, a significantly higher sorption selectivity for the silver thiosulfate complex in the presence of excess of other anions Such as S2O32-, SO42-, and Cl-, and a remarkably faster rate of both sorption and stripping. The initial uptake of the sorbate by the fibrous sorbent is nearly instantaneous, reaching up to similar to 80% of the saturation capacity within 10 s, as compared to only similar to 12% on the bead-form sorbent. The high initial rate of uptake fits a shell-core kinetic model for sorption on fiber of cylindrical geometry. With 4M HCl, the stripping of the sorbed silver complex from the fibrous sorbent is clean and nearly instantaneous, while, in contrast, a much slower rate of stripping on the bead-form sorbent leads to its fouling due to a slow decomposition of the silver thiosulfate complex in the acidic medium.
