Infrared Earth sensors are used in spacecraft for attitude sensing. Their accuracy is limited by systematic and random errors. Dominant sources of systematic errors are analyzed for a typical scanning infrared Earth sensor used in a remote-sensing satellite in a 900-km sun-synchronous orbit. The errors considered arise from 1) seasonable variation of infrared radiation, 2) oblate shape of the Earth, 3) ambient temperature of sensors, 4) changes in spin/scan period, and 5) misalignment of the axis of the sensors. Simple relations are derived using least-squares curve fitting for onboard correction of these errors. With these, it is possible to improve the accuracy of attitude determination by eight fold and achieve performance comparable to ground-based post-facto attitude computation.

Be/X-ray binary pulsars have wide eccentric orbits and hence the angle of periastron of the orbit is very well defined in these sources. The presence of an X-ray pulsar allows for accurate measurements of orbital elements. A Be star usually is a rapidly rotating star and hence will deviate from spherical geometry. The tidal interaction between the neutron star and the Be star will add to the distortion of the Be star and alter its mass distribution. Thus a measurable rate of apsidal motion is expected from these systems. In this paper, we present the first conclusive detection of apsidal motion of the binary 4U 0115+63. We also present new and accurate orbital parameters of the Be/X-ray binaries V0332+53 and 2S 1417-624.

An attempt is made to study the Einstein relation for the diffusivity-to-mobility ratio (DMR) under crossed fields' configuration in nonlinear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law by incorporating the crystal field in the Hamiltonian and including the anisotropies of the effective electron mass and the spin-orbit splitting constants within the framework of kp formalisms. The corresponding results for III-V, ternary and quaternary compounds form a special case of our generalized analysis. The DMR has also been investigated for II-VI and stressed materials on the basis of various appropriate dispersion relations. We have considered n-CdGeAs2, n-Hg1-xCdxTe, n-In1-xGaxAsyP1-y lattice matched to InP, p-CdS and stressed n-InSb materials as examples. The DMR also increases with increasing electric field and the natures of oscillations are totally band structure dependent with different numerical values. It has been observed that the DMR exhibits oscillatory dependences with inverse quantizing magnetic field and carrier degeneracy due to the Subhnikov-de Haas effect. An experimental method of determining the DMR for degenerate materials in the present case has been suggested. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a simplified theoretical formulation of the thermoelectric power (TP) under magnetic quantization in quantum wells (QWs) of nonlinear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated magneto-dispersion law. We consider the anisotropies in the effective electron masses and the spin-orbit constants within the framework of k.p formalism by incorporating the influence of the crystal field splitting. The corresponding results for III-V materials form a special case of our generalized analysis under certain limiting conditions. The TP in QWs of Bismuth, II-VI, IV-VI and stressed materials has been studied by formulating appropriate electron magneto-dispersion laws. We also address the fact that the TP exhibits composite oscillations with a varying quantizing magnetic field in QWs of n-Cd3As2, n-CdGeAs2, n-InSb, p-CdS, stressed InSb, PbTe and Bismuth. This reflects the combined signatures of magnetic and spatial quantizations of the carriers in such structures. The TP also decreases with increasing electron statistics and under the condition of non-degeneracy, all the results as derived in this paper get transformed into the well-known classical equation of TP and thus confirming the compatibility test. We have also suggested an experimental method of determining the elastic constants in such systems with arbitrary carrier energy spectra from the known value of the TP. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Ga1-xMnxSb crystals are grown with different Mn doping concentrations by the horizontal Bridgman method (x = 0 - 0.04). Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies are carried out in the temperature range 3-300 K. Optical absorption studies reveal that the inter-valence band transition from the spin-orbit split-off band to the light/heavy hole bands is dominant over the fundamental valence band to conduction band absorption. In higher doped crystals, the fundamental absorption peak is merged with the inter-valence band transition and could not be resolved. Photoluminescence measurements in heavily doped crystals reveal the band gap narrowing and band filling effects due to the Fermi level shifting into the valence band.

Details of an efficient optimal closed-loop guidance algorithm for a three-dimensional launch are presented with simulation results. Two types of orbital injections, with either true anomaly or argument of perigee being free at injection, are considered. The resulting steering-angle profile under the assumption of uniform gravity lies in a canted plane which transforms a three-dimensional problem into an equivalent two-dimensional one. Effects of thrust are estimated using a series in a recursive way. Encke's method is used to predict the trajectory during powered flight and then to compute the changes due to actual gravity using two gravity-related vectors. Guidance parameters are evaluated using the linear differential correction method. Optimality of the algorithm is tested against a standard ground-based trajectory optimization package. The performance of the algorithm is tested for accuracy, robustness, and efficiency for a sun-synchronous mission involving guidance for a multistage vehicle that requires large pitch and yaw maneuver. To demonstrate applicability of the algorithm to a range of missions, injection into a geostationary transfer orbit is also considered. The performance of the present algorithm is found to be much better than others.

We study the bound states of two spin-1/2 fermions interacting via a contact attraction (characterized by a scattering length) in the singlet channel in three-dimensional space in presence of a uniform non-Abelian gauge field. The configuration of the gauge field that generates a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction is described by three coupling parameters (lambda(x),lambda(y),lambda(z)). For a generic gauge field configuration, the critical scattering length required for the formation of a bound state is negative, i.e., shifts to the ``BCS side'' of the resonance. Interestingly, we find that there are special high-symmetry configurations (e.g., lambda(x) = lambda(y) = lambda(z)) for which there is a two-body bound state for any scattering length however small and negative. Remarkably, the bound-state wave functions obtained for such configurations have nematic spin structure similar to those found in liquid He-3. Our results show that the BCS-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover is drastically affected by the presence of a non-Abelian gauge field. We discuss possible experimental signatures of our findings both at high and low temperatures.

FePS3 is a layered antiferromagnet (T N=123 K) with a marked Ising anisotropy in magnetic properties. The anisotropy arises from the combined effect of the trigonal distortion from octahedral symmetry and spin-orbit coupling on the orbitally degenerate5 T 2g ground state of the Fe2+ ion. The anisotropic paramagnetic susceptibilities are interpreted in terms of the zero field Hamiltonian, ?=?i [?(L iz 2 ?2)+|?|L i .S i ]?? ij J ij S i .S j . The crystal field trigonal distortion parameter ?, the spin-orbit coupling ? and the isotropic Heisenberg exchange,J ij, were evaluated from an analysis of the high temperature paramagnetic susceptibility data using the Correlated Effective Field (CEF) theory for many-body magnetism developed by Lines. Good agreement with experiment were obtained for ?/k=215.5 K; ?/k=166.5 K;J nn k=27.7 K; andJ nnn k=?2.3 K. Using these values of the crystal field and exchange parameters the CEF predicts aT N=122 K for FePS3, which is remarkably close to the observed value of theT N. The accuracy of the CEF approximation was also ascertained by comparing the calculated susceptibilities in the CEF with the experimental susceptibility for the isotropic Heisenberg layered antiferromagnet MnPS3, for which the high temperature series expansion susceptibility is available.

Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies have been carried out at room temperature in 25 R2O-25 GeO2-49.5 B2O3-0.5 Nd2O3 glass systems, (Composition in mol%, R= Li, Na, K and Rb). Judd Ofelt Intensity parameters and other parameters like Racah (E-1, E-2 and E-3), Slater-Condon-Shortley (F-2, F-4 and F-6) Spin-Orbit Coupling (xi(4f)) and Configuration Interaction (alpha, beta and gamma) for Nd3+ ion in the glass system are calculated. The variation of the 02 parameters are interpreted in terms of the covalency of the RE ion in the glass matrix. Further the hypersensitive transition I-4(9/2) -> (4)G(5/2), (2)G(7/2) is analyzed with respect to the intensity ratio I-L/I-S and is found to be dependent on the type of alkali in the glass matrix. The Photoluminescence studies do not show any appreciable shift in the peak emission wavelength of the F-4(3/2) to I-4(11/2) transition with the change in alkali type. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The anisotropic magnetic susceptibilities of single crystals of the isostructural layered antiferromagnets, MnPS3 (T-N = 78 K) and MnPSe3 (T-N = 74 K), have been measured as functions of temperature. In both compounds, divalent manganese is present in the high-spin S = 5/2 state. The anisotropies in the susceptibilities of the two are, however, very different; while the susceptibility of MnPS3 is isotropic, that of MnPSe3 shows a large XY anisotropy, unusual for a manganese compound. The anisotropic susceptibilities are described by the zero-field spin Hamiltonian: H = DSiz2 - Sigma J(ij).(S) over right arrow (S) over right arrow(j) with the quadratic single-ion anisotropy term introducing anisotropy in an otherwise isotropic situation. The exchange J and the single-ion zero-field-splitting (ZFS) parameter D were evaluated using the correlated effective-field theory of Lines. For MnPSe3, J/k = -5.29 K and D/k = 26.6 K, while for isotropic MnPS3, J/k = -8.1 K. It is suggested that the large value of the ZFS parameter for MnPSe3 as compared to MnPS3 could be due to the large ligand spin-orbit contribution of the heavier selenium.

Although the prevalent mathematical description of the Poynting-Robertson effect is correct, its physical interpretation is sometimes problematic. By means of a two-parameter model, we revisit the effect in order to get a better physical understanding of it. The principal conclusion is that the motion of a dust in circumsolar orbit is governed only by solar radiation absorption and not by the asymmetry of reemission, even when viewed in the rest-frame of the Sun. We compute the temperature profiles of accretion discs around rapidly rotating strange stars, using constant gravitational mass equilibrium sequences of these objects, considering the full effect of general relativity. Beyond a certain critical value of stellar angular momentum (J), we observe the radius ( $r_{\rm orb}$) of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) to increase with J (a property seen neither in rotating black holes nor in rotating neutron stars). The reason for this is traced to the crucial dependence of ${\rm d}r_{\rm orb}/{\rm d}J$ on the rate of change of the radial gradient of the Keplerian angular velocity at $r_{\rm orb}$ with respect to J. The structure parameters and temperature profiles obtained are compared with those of neutron stars, as an attempt to provide signatures for distinguishing between the two. We show that when the full gamut of strange star equation of state models, with varying degrees of stiffness are considered, there exists a substantial overlap in properties of both neutron stars and strange stars. However, applying accretion disc model constraints to rule out stiff strange star equation of state models, we notice that neutron stars and strange stars exclusively occupy certain parameter spaces. This result implies the possibility of distinguishing these objects from each other by sensitive observations through future X-ray detectors.

We investigate the ground state of interacting spin-1/2 fermions in three dimensions at a finite density (rho similar to k(F)(3)) in the presence of a uniform non-Abelian gauge field. The gauge-field configuration (GFC) described by a vector lambda equivalent to (lambda(x),lambda(y),lambda(z)), whose magnitude lambda determines the gauge coupling strength, generates a generalized Rashba spin-orbit interaction. For a weak attractive interaction in the singlet channel described by a small negative scattering length (k(F)vertical bar a(s)vertical bar less than or similar to 1), the ground state in the absence of the gauge field (lambda = 0) is a BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) superfluid with large overlapping pairs. With increasing gauge-coupling strength, a non-Abelian gauge field engenders a crossover of this BCS ground state to a BEC (Bose-Einstein condensate) of bosons even with a weak attractive interaction that fails to produce a two-body bound state in free vacuum (lambda = 0). For large gauge couplings (lambda/k(F) >> 1), the BEC attained is a condensate of bosons whose properties are solely determined by the Rashba gauge field (and not by the scattering length so long as it is nonzero)-we call these bosons ``rashbons.'' In the absence of interactions (a(s) = 0(-)), the shape of the Fermi surface of the system undergoes a topological transition at a critical gauge coupling lambda(T). For high-symmetry GFCs we show that the crossover from the BCS superfluid to the rashbon BEC occurs in the regime of lambda near lambda(T). In the context of cold atomic systems, these results make an interesting suggestion of obtaining BCS-BEC crossover through a route other than tuning the interaction between the fermions.

The effect of host glass composition on the optical absorption and fluorescence spectra of Nd3+ has been studied in mixed alkali borate glasses of the type xNa(2)O-(30-x)K2O-69.5B(2)O(3)-0.5Nd(2)O(3) (X = 5,10,15,20 and 25). Various spectroscopic parameters such as Racah (E-1, E-2 and E-3), spin-orbit (xi(4f)) and configuration interaction (alpha, beta) parameters have been calculated. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters (Omega(lambda)) have been calculated and the radiative transition probabilities (A(rad)), radiative lifetimes (tau(r)), branching ratios (beta) and integrated absorption cross sections (Sigma) have been obtained for certain excited states of the Nd3+, ion and are discussed with respect to x. From the fluorescence spectra, the effective fluorescence line widths (Deltalambda(eff)) and stimulated emission cross sections (sigma(p)) have been obtained for the three transitions F-4(3/2) --> I-4(9/2), F-4(3/2) --> I-4(11/2) and F-4(3/2) --> I-4(13/2) of Nd3+. The stimulated emission cross section (sigma(p)) values are found to be in the range (2.0-4.8) x 10(-2)0 cm(2) and they are large enough to indicate that the mixed alkali borate glasses could be potential laser host materials.

With the introduction of 2D flat-panel X-ray detectors, 3D image reconstruction using helical cone-beam tomography is fast replacing the conventional 2D reconstruction techniques. In 3D image reconstruction, the source orbit or scanning geometry should satisfy the data sufficiency or completeness condition for exact reconstruction. The helical scan geometry satisfies this condition and hence can give exact reconstruction. The theoretically exact helical cone-beam reconstruction algorithm proposed by Katsevich is a breakthrough and has attracted interest in the 3D reconstruction using helical cone-beam Computed Tomography. In many practical situations, the available projection data is incomplete. One such case is where the detector plane does not completely cover the full extent of the object being imaged in lateral direction resulting in truncated projections. This result in artifacts that mask small features near to the periphery of the ROI when reconstructed using the convolution back projection (CBP) method assuming that the projection data is complete. A number of techniques exist which deal with completion of missing data followed by the CBP reconstruction. In 2D, linear prediction (LP)extrapolation has been shown to be efficient for data completion, involving minimal assumptions on the nature of the data, producing smooth extensions of the missing projection data.In this paper, we propose to extend the LP approach for extrapolating helical cone beam truncated data. The projection on the multi row flat panel detectors has missing columns towards either ends in the lateral direction in truncated data situation. The available data from each detector row is modeled using a linear predictor. The available data is extrapolated and this completed projection data is backprojected using the Katsevich algorithm. Simulation results show the efficacy of the proposed method.
