Anion directed, template syntheses of two dinuclear copper(II) complexes of mono-condensed Schiff base ligand Hdipn (4-[(3-aminopentylimino)-methyl]-benzene-1,3-diol) involving 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopentane were realized in the presence of bridging azide and acetate anions. Both complexes, [Cu-2(dipn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) and [Cu-2(dip(n))(2)(OAc)(2)] (2) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two mononuclear units are joined together by basal-apical, double end-on azido bridges in complex 1 and by basal-apical, double mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridges in 2. Both complexes form rectangular grid-like supramolecular structures via H-bonds connecting the azide or acetate anion and the p-hydroxy group of 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 has antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.10 cm (1)) through the azide bridge while 2 has intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling through the acetate bridge and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic coupling through H-bonds (J = 2.85 cm (1), J' = -1.08 cm (1)). The role of lectins in mediating cancer metastasis, apoptosis as well as various other signaling events has been well established in the past few years. Data on various aspects of the role of lectins in cancer is being accumulated at a rapid pace. The data on lectins available in the literature is so diverse, that it becomes difficult and time-consuming, if not impossible to comprehend the advances in various areas and obtain the maximum benefit. Not only do the lectins vary significantly in their individual functional roles, but they are also diverse in their sequences, structures, binding site architectures, quaternary structures, carbohydrate affinities and specificities as well as their potential applications. An organization of these seemingly independent data into a common framework is essential in order to achieve effective use of all the data towards understanding the roles of different lectins in different aspects of cancer and any resulting applications. An integrated knowledge base (CancerLectinDB) together with appropriate analytical tools has therefore been developed for lectins relevant for any aspect of cancer, by collating and integrating diverse data. This database is unique in terms of providing sequence, structural, and functional annotations for lectins from all known sources in cancer and is expected to be a useful addition to the number of glycan related resources now available to the community. The database has been implemented using MySQL on a Linux platform and web-enabled using Perl-CGI and Java tools. Data for individual lectins pertain to taxonomic, biochemical, domain architecture, molecular sequence and structural details as well as carbohydrate specificities. Extensive links have also been provided for relevant bioinformatics resources and analytical tools. Availability of diverse data integrated into a common framework is expected to be of high value for various studies on lectin cancer biology.

Iron(III) complexes [Fe(L)(2)]Cl (1-3), where L is monoanionic N-salicylidene-arginine (sal-argH for 1), hydroxynaphthylidene-arginine (nap-argH for 2) and N-salicylidene-lysine (sal-lysH for 3), were prepared and their DNA binding and photo-induced DNA cleavage activity studied. Complex 3 as its hexafluorophosphate salt [Fe(sal-lysH)(2)](PF6)center dot 6H(2)O (3a) was structurally characterized by single crystal Xray crystallography. The crystals belonged to the triclinic space group P-1. The complex has two tridentate ligands in FeN2O4 coordination geometry with two pendant cationic amine moieties. Complexes 1 and 2 with two pendant cationic guanidinium moieties are the structural models for the antitumor antibiotics netropsin. The complexes are stable and soluble in water. They showed quasi-reversible Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple near 0.6 V in H2O-0.1 M KCl. The high-spin 3d(5)-iron(III) complexes with mu(eff) value of similar to 5.9 mu(B) displayed ligand-to-metal charge transfer electronic band near 500 mm in Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes show binding to Calf Thymus (CT) DNA. Complex 2 showed better binding propensity to the synthetic oligomer poly(dA)center dot poly(dT) than to CT-DNA or poly(dG)center dot poly(dC). All the complexes displayed chemical nuclease activity in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a reducing agent and cleaved supercoiled pUC19 DNA to its nicked circular form. They exhibited photo-induced DNA cleavage activity in UV-A light and visible light via a mechanistic pathway that involves the formation of reactive hydroxyl radical species. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. 1. Whether life-history traits can determine community composition and structure is an important question that has been well explored theoretically, but has received scant empirical attention. Life-history traits of a seven-member community of galler and parasitoid fig wasp species (Chalcidoidea), developing within the inflorescences (syconia) of Ficus racemosa (Moraceae) in India, were determined and used to examine community structure and ecology. 2. Gallers were pro-ovigenic (all eggs are mature upon adult emergence) whereas parasitoids were synovigenic (eggs mature progressively during adult lifespan). Initial egg load was correlated with body size for some species, and there was a trade-off between egg number and egg size across all species. Although all species completed their development and left the syconium concurrently, they differed in their adult and pre-adult lifespans. Providing sucrose solutions increased parasitoid lifespan but had no effect on the longevity of some galler species. While feeding regimes and body size affected longevity in most species, an interaction effect between these variables was detected for only one species. 3. Life-history traits of wasp species exhibited a continuum in relation to their arrival sequence at syconia for oviposition during syconium development, and therefore reflected their ecology. The largest number of eggs, smallest egg sizes, and shortest longevities were characteristic of the earliest-arriving galling wasps at the smallest, immature syconia; the converse characterised the later-arriving parasitoids at the larger, already parasitised syconia. Thus life history is an important correlate of community resource partitioning and can be used to understand community structure. 4. This is the first comprehensive study of life-history traits in a fig wasp community. The comparative approach revealed constraints and flexibility in trait evolution.

A combined base station association and power control problem is studied for the uplink of multichannel multicell cellular networks, in which each channel is used by exactly one cell (i.e., base station). A distributed association and power update algorithm is proposed and shown to converge to a Nash equilibrium of a noncooperative game. We consider network models with discrete mobiles (yielding an atomic congestion game), as well as a continuum of mobiles (yielding a population game). We find that the equilibria need not be Pareto efficient, nor need they be system optimal. To address the lack of system optimality, we propose pricing mechanisms. It is shown that these mechanisms can be implemented in a distributed fashion.

Bis-bidentate Schiff base ligand L and its two mononuclear complexes [CuL(CH3CN)(2)]ClO4 (1)and [CuL(PPh3)(2)]ClO4 (2)have been prepared and thoroughly characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-Vis, NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. In both the complexes the metal ion auxiliaries adopt tetrahedral coordination environment. Their reactivity, electrochemical and photophysical behavior have been studied. Complex 1 shows reversible Cu-II/I couple with potential 0.74 V versus Ag/AgCl in CH2Cl2. At room temperature L is weakly fluorescent in CH2Cl2, however in Cu(I)complexes 1 and 2 the emission in quenched. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Proton transfer across cationic hydrogen bonds involving Schiff base, ammonia and related compounds has been studied at the 4-31G level. Proton transfer characteristics are correlated to the proton affinities of the species involved. Hydrogen bond strengths of these hydrogen bonds are correlated to the differences in the proton affinity of the donor and the acceptor. Influence of a neighbouring hydrogen bond on the proton transfer from Schiff base to ammonia and Schiff base to water is also discussed.

During the course of genome studies in a rural community in the South Indian state of Karnataka, DNA-based investigations and counselling for familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) were requested via the community physician. The proposita died in 1940 and FAP had been clinically diagnosed in 2 of her 5 children, both deceased. DNA samples from 2 affected individuals in the third generation were screened for mutations in the APC gene, and a frame-shift mutation was identified in exon 15 with a common deletion at codon 1061. Predictive testing for the mutation was then organized on a voluntary basis. There were 11 positive tests, including confirmatory positives on 2 persons diagnosed by colonoscopy, and to date surgery has been successfully undertaken on 3 previously undiagnosed adults. The ongoing success of the study indicates that, with appropriate access to the facilities offered by collaborating centres, predictive testing is feasible for diseases such as FAP and could be of significant benefit to communities in economically less developed countries.

Base metal (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu) substituted CeVO4 compounds were synthesized by the solution combustion technique. These compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and BET surface area analyzer. The characterization indicated that the base metals were substituted in the ionic state in all the compounds. These compounds were used for the photocatalytic degradation of phenol and the degradation rates obtained in the presence of these compounds werecompared against that obtained with the commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2 catalyst. Fe and Cr substituted CeVO4 showed photocatalytic activity that was comparable with that of Degussa P-25 TiO2. The concentration of toxic intermediates was high when the reaction was carried out in presence of Degussa P-25 TiO2 but it was found to be insignificant when the reaction was carried out in presence of base metal-substituted CeVO4. The effect of % Fe-substitution (varied from 1 to 5 at%) in CeVO4 on the photocatalytic activity was also investigated and it was observed that 1 at% Fe-substituted compound showed the highest activity. A mathematical model describing the kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation of phenol was developed on the basis of the catalyst structure and taking into account the formation of all the possible intermediates. The variation of the concentration of phenol and the intermediates was described by the model and the reaction rateconstants were determined. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes [VO(sal-argH)(B)] Cl (1-3) and [VO(sal-lysH)(B)] Cl (4-6), where sal-argH2 and sal-lysH(2) are N-salicylidene-L-arginine and N-salicylidene-L-lysine Schiff bases and B is a phenanthroline base, viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1 and 4); dipyrido[3,2-d: 2', 3'-f] quinoxaline (dpq in 2 and 5) and dipyrido[3,2-a: 2', 3'-c] phenazine (dppz in 3 and 6), have been prepared, characterized and their DNA photocleavage activity studied. Complex 1, characterized by X-ray crystallography, shows the presence of a vanadyl group in VIVO3N3 coordination geometry with a tridentate Schiff base having a pendant guanidinium moiety and bidentate phen ligand. The complexes exhibit a d-d band at similar to 715 nm in 20% DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes are redox active showing cathodic and anodic responses near -1.0 V and 0.85 V (vs. SCE) for the V(IV)-V(III) and V(V)-V(IV) couples, respectively, in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes bind to calf thymus DNA giving Kb values in the range of 3.8 x 10(4) to 1.6 x 10(5) M-1. Thermal denaturation and viscosity data suggest DNA groove binding nature of the complexes. The complexes do not show any `chemical nuclease'' activity in dark in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid or H2O2. The dpq and dppz complexes are efficient photocleavers of plasmid DNA in UV-A (365 nm) and red light (676 nm) via singlet oxygen pathway. The dppz complexes exhibit photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells giving IC50 values of 15.4 mu M for 3 and 17.5 mu M for 6 in visible light while being non-toxic in dark giving IC50 values of > 100 mu M.

The chemical groups which take part in the proton transfer reaction in bacteriorhodopsin have been studied by ab initio quantum chemical methods. The various factors such as conjugation with a linear system, electron delocalization of the guanidine type, cis-trans isomerism, geometry distortion and hydrogen bonding with charged groups can influence the properties of a given chemical group. Several systems are studied at 4-31G and STO-3G levels. Some of the Schiff-base analogues and guanidine type molecules are characterized by their molecular orbital diagrams, energy levels and the nature of charge distribution. Also, the effects of the above-mentioned factors on proton affinity are studied. It is hoped that the values thus obtained can be helpful in evaluating various structural models for proton transfer.

Reactions of N,N′-n-propylene-bis(acetylacetoneimino) metal (II), M[n-P-(AI)2], where M=Ni(II) or Pd(II), with nitrosating reagents have been investigated. Mono- and di-nitrosated complexes were obtained selectively, depending upon the concentration of the nitrosating reagents and the reaction time. In both the cases, the γ-CH group is transformed to an ambidentate isonitroso group (>C=NOH), which coordinates to the metal ion by dislodging the already coordinated carbonyl group. The factors influencing the mode of binding of the isonitroso group have been discussed. The bromination reactions of the mono-nitrosated products of M[n-P-(AI)2] and Pd (II) complexes, Pd [E/i-P-(AI)2], where E/i-P-(AI)2 is a dianion of ethylene/i-propylene-bis (acetylacetoneimine), are also reported. The reaction products have been characterized by elemental analyses, electrical conductivity molecular weight determination, and ir, pmr and electronic spectral data.

A commercial acrylic fiber with 92% (w/w) acrylonitrile content was partially hydrolyzed converting a fraction of the nitrile (-CN) groups to carboxylic acid (-COOH) groups, to coat the fiber with polyethylenimine (PEI) resin, which was then crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and further quaternized with ethyl chloroacetate to produce a novel strong-base anionic exchanger in the form of fiber. Designated as PAN(QPEI.XG)(Cl-), the fibrous sorbent was compared with a commercial bead-form resin Amberlite IRA-458(Cl-) in respect of sorption capacity, selectivity, and kinetics for removal of silver thiosulfate complexes from aqueous solutions. Though the saturation level of [Ag(S2O3)(2)](3-) on PAN(QPEI.XG)(Cl-) is considerably less than that on IRA-458(Cl-), the gel-coated fibrous sorbent exhibits, as compared to the bead-form sorbent, a significantly higher sorption selectivity for the silver thiosulfate complex in the presence of excess of other anions Such as S2O32-, SO42-, and Cl-, and a remarkably faster rate of both sorption and stripping. The initial uptake of the sorbate by the fibrous sorbent is nearly instantaneous, reaching up to similar to 80% of the saturation capacity within 10 s, as compared to only similar to 12% on the bead-form sorbent. The high initial rate of uptake fits a shell-core kinetic model for sorption on fiber of cylindrical geometry. With 4M HCl, the stripping of the sorbed silver complex from the fibrous sorbent is clean and nearly instantaneous, while, in contrast, a much slower rate of stripping on the bead-form sorbent leads to its fouling due to a slow decomposition of the silver thiosulfate complex in the acidic medium.
