For studying systems with a cubic anisotropy in interfacial energy sigma, we extend the Cahn-Hilliard model by including in it a fourth-rank term, namely, gamma (ijlm) [partial derivative (2) c/(partial derivativex(i) partial derivativex(j))] [partial derivative (2) c/(partial derivativex(l) partial derivativex(m))]. This term leads to an additional linear term in the evolution equation for the composition parameter field. It also leads to an orientation-dependent effective fourth-rank coefficient gamma ([hkl]) in the governing equation for the one-dimensional composition profile across a planar interface. The main effect of a non-negative gamma ([hkl]) is to increase both sigma and interfacial width w, each of which, upon suitable scaling, is related to gamma ([hkl]) through a universal scaling function. In this model, sigma is a differentiable function of interface orientation (n) over cap, and does not exhibit cusps; therefore, the equilibrium particle shapes (Wulff shapes) do not contain planar facets. However, the anisotropy in the interfacial energy can be large enough to give rise to corners in the Wulff shapes in two dimensions. In particles of finite sizes, the corners become rounded, and their shapes tend towards the Wulff shape with increasing particle size.

In this paper a new parallel algorithm for nonlinear transient dynamic analysis of large structures has been presented. An unconditionally stable Newmark-beta method (constant average acceleration technique) has been employed for time integration. The proposed parallel algorithm has been devised within the broad framework of domain decomposition techniques. However, unlike most of the existing parallel algorithms (devised for structural dynamic applications) which are basically derived using nonoverlapped domains, the proposed algorithm uses overlapped domains. The parallel overlapped domain decomposition algorithm proposed in this paper has been formulated by splitting the mass, damping and stiffness matrices arises out of finite element discretisation of a given structure. A predictor-corrector scheme has been formulated for iteratively improving the solution in each step. A computer program based on the proposed algorithm has been developed and implemented with message passing interface as software development environment. PARAM-10000 MIMD parallel computer has been used to evaluate the performances. Numerical experiments have been conducted to validate as well as to evaluate the performance of the proposed parallel algorithm. Comparisons have been made with the conventional nonoverlapped domain decomposition algorithms. Numerical studies indicate that the proposed algorithm is superior in performance to the conventional domain decomposition algorithms. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Rotational dynamics of polarity sensitive fluorescent dyes (ANS and DPH) in a nonpolymertic aqueous gel derived from tripodal cholamide I was studied using ultrafast time-resolved fluorescence technique. Results were compared with that of naturally occurring di- and trihydroxy bile salts. ANS in the gel showed two rotational correlation time (phi) components, 13.2 ns (bound to the hydrophobic region of the gel) and 1.0 ns (free aqueous ANS), whereas DPH showed only one component (4.8 ns). In the sol state, faster rotational motion was observed, both for ANS and DPH. Our data revealed that dyes get encapsulated more tightly in the gel network when compared to the micellar aggregates. ANS has more restrained rotation compared to DPH. This was attributed to the interaction of the sulfonate group of ANS with water molecules and hydrophilic parts of the gelator molecule. No restricted rotation was observed for DPH in the gel state unlike when it is in the gel phase of lipid bilayer.

A series of novel, microporous polymer networks (MPNs) have been generated in a simple, acid catalysed Friedel-Crafts-type self-condensation of A(2)B(2)- and A(2)B(4)-type fluorenone monomers. Two A2B4-type monomers with 2,7-bis(N, N-diphenylamino) A or 2,7-bis [4-(N, N-diphenylamino) phenyl] D substitution of the fluorenone cores lead to MPNs with high S(BET) surface areas of up to 1400 m(2) g(-1). Two MPNs made of binary monomer mixtures showed the highest Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas S(BET) of our series (SBET of up to 1800 m(2) g(-1)) after washing the powdery samples with supercritical carbon dioxide. Total pore volumes of up to 1.6 cm(3) g(-1) have been detected. It is observed that the substitution pattern of the monomers is strongly influencing the resulting physicochemical properties of the microporous polymer networks (MPNs).

The reaction of [Cp*TaCl(4)], 1 (Cp* = eta(5)-C(5)Me(5)), with [LiBH(4)center dot THF] at -78 degrees C, followed by thermolysis in the presence of excess [BH(3)center dot THF], results in the formation of the oxatantalaborane cluster [(Cp*Ta)(2)B(4)H(10)O], 2 in moderate yield. Compound 2 is a notable example of an oxatantalaborane cluster where oxygen is contiguously bound to both the metal and boron. Upon availability of 2, a room temperature reaction was performed with [Fe(2)(CO)(9)], which led to the isolation of [(Cp*Ta)(2)B(2)H(4)O{H(2)Fe(2)(CO)(6)BH} ] 3. Compound 3 is an unusual heterometallic boride cluster in which the [Ta(2)Fe(2)] atoms define a butterfly framework with one boron atom lying in a semi-interstitial position. Likewise, the diselenamolybdaborane, [(Cp*Mo)(2)B(4)H(4)Se(2)], 4 was treated with an excess of [Fe(2)(CO)(9)] to afford the heterometallic boride cluster [(Cp*MoSe)(2)Fe(6)(CO)(13)B(2)(BH)(2)], 5. The cluster core of 5 consists of a cubane [Mo(2)Se(2)Fe(2)B(2)] and a tricapped trigonal prism [Fe(6)B(3)] fused together with four atoms held in common between the two subclusters. In the tricapped trigonal prism subunit, one of the boron atoms is completely encapsulated and bonded to six iron and two boron atoms. Compounds 2, 3, and 5 have been characterized by mass spectrometry, IR, (1)H, (11)B, (13)C NMR spectroscopy, and the geometric structures were unequivocally established by crystallographic analysis. The density functional theory calculations yielded geometries that are in close agreement with the observed structures. Furthermore, the calculated (11)B NMR chemical shifts also support the structural characterization of the compounds. Natural bond order analysis and Wiberg bond indices are used to gain insight into the bonding patterns of the observed geometries of 2, 3, and 5.

Stoichiometric CrSi2 was prepared by arc melting and compacted by uniaxial hot pressing for property measurements. The crystal structure of CrSi2 was investigated using the powder x-ray diffraction method. From the Rietveld refinement, the lattice parameters were found to be a = 4.427 57 (7) and c = 6.368 04 (11) Å, respectively. The thermal expansion measurement revealed an anisotropic expansion in the temperature range from room temperature 800 K with αa = 14.58×10−6/K, αc = 7.51×10−6/K, and αV = 12.05×10−6/K. The volumetric thermal expansion coefficient shows an anomalous decrease in the temperature range of 450–600 K. The measured electrical resistivity ρ and thermoelectric power S have similar trends with a maxima around 550 K. Thermal conductivity measurements show a monotonic decrease with increasing temperature from a room temperature value of 10 W m−1 K−1. The ZT values increase with temperature and have a maximum value of 0.18 in the temperature range studied. An analysis of the electronic band structure is provided.

L-PGlu-(2-proPyl)-L-His-L-ProNH(2) (NP-647) is a CNS active thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) analog with potential application in various CNS disorders including seizures. In the present study, mechanism of action for protective effect of NP-647 was explored by studying role of NP-647 on epileptiform activity and sodium channels by using patch-clamp methods. Epileptiform activity was induced in subicular pyramidal neurons of hippocampal slice of rat by perfusing 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) containing Mg(+2)-free normal artificial cerebrospinal fluid (nACSF). Increase in mean firing frequency was observed after perfusion of 4-AP and zero Mg(+2) (2.10+/-0.47 Hz) as compared with nACSF (0.12+/-0.08 Hz). A significant decrease in mean firing frequency (0.61+/-0.22 Hz), mean frequency of epileptiform events (0.03+/-0.02 Hz vs. 0.22+/-0.05 Hz of 4-AP+0 Mg), and average number of action potentials in paroxysmal depolarization shift-burst (2.54+/-1.21 Hz vs. 8.16+/-0.88 Hz of 4-AP +0 Mg) was observed. A significant reduction in peak dV/dt (246+/-19 mV ms(-1) vs. 297 18 mV ms-1 of 4-AP+0 Mg) and increase (1.332+/-0.018 ms vs. 1.292+/-0.019 ms of 4-AP+0 Mg) in time required to reach maximum depolarization were observed indicating role of sodium channels. Concentration-dependent depression of sodium current was observed after exposure to dorsal root ganglion neurons to NP-647. NP-647 at different concentrations (1, 3, and 10 mu M) depressed sodium current (15+/-0.5%, 50+/-2.6%, and 75+/-0.7%, respectively). However, NP-647 did not show change in the peak sodium current in CNa18 cells. Results of present study demonstrated potential of NP-647 in the inhibition of epileptiform activity by inhibiting sodium channels indirectly. (C) 2011 IBRO. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Copper dodecanoate films prepared by emulsion method exhibit superhydrophobic property with water contact angle of 155 degrees and sliding angle of <2 degrees. The films have been characterised by using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. Surface microstructure of copper dodecanoate consists of numerous microscale papillas of about 6-12 mu m in length with a diameter in the range of 360-700 nm. The superhydrophobicity of the films is due to their dual micronano surface morphology. The wetting behaviour of the film surface was studied by a simple water immersion test. The results show that copper dodecanoate film retained superhydrophobic property even after immersing in water for about 140 h. The optical absorption spectrum exhibits two broadbands centred at 388 and 630 nm that have been assigned to B-2(1g) -> E-2(g) and B-2(1g) -> B-2(2g) transitions of Cu2+ ions, respectively. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum exhibits two resonance signals with effective g values at g(parallel to)approximate to 2.308 and g(perpendicular to) approximate to 2.071, which suggests that the unpaired electron occupies d(x2-y2) orbital in the ground state. We have developed a technique to measure the absolute frequencies of optical transitions by using an evacuated Rb-stabilized ring-cavity resonator as a transfer cavity. The absolute frequency of the Rb D-2 line (at 780 nm) used to stabilize the cavity is known and allows us to determine the absolute value of the unknown frequency. We study wavelength-dependent errors due to dispersion at the cavity mirrors by measuring the frequency of the same transition in the Cs D-2 line (at 852 nm) at three cavity lengths. The spread in the values shows that dispersion errors are below 30 kHz, corresponding to a relative precision of 10(-10). We give an explanation for reduced dispersion errors in the ring-cavity geometry by calculating errors due to the lateral shift and the phase shift at the mirrors, and show that they are roughly equal but occur with opposite signs. We have earlier shown that diffraction errors (due to Guoy phase) are negligible in the ring-cavity geometry compared to a linear cavity; the reduced dispersion error is another advantage. Our values are consistent with measurements of the same transition using the more expensive frequency-comb technique. Our simpler method is ideally suited for measuring hyperfine structure, fine structure, and isotope shifts, up to several hundreds of gigahertz.

We present external memory data structures for efficiently answering range-aggregate queries. The range-aggregate problem is defined as follows: Given a set of weighted points in R-d, compute the aggregate of the weights of the points that lie inside a d-dimensional orthogonal query rectangle. The aggregates we consider in this paper include COUNT, sum, and MAX. First, we develop a structure for answering two-dimensional range-COUNT queries that uses O(N/B) disk blocks and answers a query in O(log(B) N) I/Os, where N is the number of input points and B is the disk block size. The structure can be extended to obtain a near-linear-size structure for answering range-sum queries using O(log(B) N) I/Os, and a linear-size structure for answering range-MAX queries in O(log(B)(2) N) I/Os. Our structures can be made dynamic and extended to higher dimensions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The experimental solubilities of the mixture of nitrophenol (m- and p-) isomers were determined at 308, 318 and 328 K over a pressure range of 10-17.55 MPa. Compared to the binary solubilities, the ternary solubilities of m-nitrophenol increased at 308, 318 and 328 K. The ternary solubilities of p-nitrophenol increased at 308 K, while the ternary solubilities decreased at lower pressures and increased at higher pressure at 318 and 328 K. The solubilities of the solid mixtures in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) were correlated with solution models by incorporating the non-idealities using activity coefficient based models. The Wilson and NRTL activity coefficient models were applied to determine the nature of the interactions between the molecules. The equation developed by using the NRTL model has three parameters and correlates mixture solubilities of solid solutes in terms of temperature and cosolute composition. The equation derived from the Wilson model contains five parameters and correlates solubilities in terms of temperature, density and cosolute composition. These two new equations developed in this work were used to correlate the solubilities of 25 binary solid mixtures including the current data. The average AARDs of the model equations derived using the NRTL and Wilson models for the solid mixtures were found to be 7% and 4%, respectively. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

For a family of Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) C-1, C-2,..., with increasing number of transmit antennas N-i, with rates R-i complex symbols per channel use, i = 1, 2,..., we introduce the notion of asymptotic normalized rate which we define as lim(i ->infinity) R-i/N-i, and we say that a family of STBCs is asymptotically-good if its asymptotic normalized rate is non-zero, i. e., when the rate scales as a non-zero fraction of the number of transmit antennas. An STBC C is said to be g-group decodable, g >= 2, if the information symbols encoded by it can be partitioned into g groups, such that each group of symbols can be ML decoded independently of the others. In this paper we construct full-diversity g-group decodable codes with rates greater than one complex symbol per channel use for all g >= 2. Specifically, we construct delay-optimal, g-group decodable codes for number of transmit antennas N-t that are a multiple of g2left perpendicular(g-1/2)right perpendicular with rate N-t/g2(g-1) + g(2)-g/2N(t). Using these new codes as building blocks, we then construct non-delay-optimal g-group decodable codes with rate roughly g times that of the delay-optimal codes, for number of antennas N-t that are a multiple of 2left perpendicular(g-1/2)right perpendicular, with delay gN(t) and rate Nt/2(g-1) + g-1/2N(t). For each g >= 2, the new delay-optimal and non-delay- optimal families of STBCs are both asymptotically-good, with the latter family having the largest asymptotic normalized rates among all known families of multigroup decodable codes with delay T <= gN(t). Also, for g >= 3, these are the first instances of g-group decodable codes with rates greater than 1 reported in the literature.

Peptide based self assembled nanostructures have attracted growing interest in recent years due to their numerous potential applications particularly in biomedical sciences. Di-peptide Phe-Phe was shown previously to self-assemble into nanotube like structures. In this work, we studied the affect of peptide backbone length and conformational flexibility on the self assembly process by using two dipeptides based on the Phe-Phe backbone (beta Phe-Phe and beta Phe-Delta Phe): one containing a flexible beta Phe amino acid, and the other containing both a flexible bPhe as well as a backbone constraining Alpha Phe (alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine) amino acid. Electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that these new di-peptides can self-assemble into nanotubes having different properties than the native Phe-Phe nanotubes. These nanotubes were stable over a broad range of temperatures and the introduction of non-natural amino acids provided them with stability against the action of nonspecific proteases. Moreover, these dipeptides showed no cytotoxicity towards HeLa and L929 cells, and were able to encapsulate small drug molecules. We further showed that anticancerous drug mitoxantrone was more efficient in killing HeLa and B6F10 cells when entrapped in nanotubes as compared to free mitoxantrone. Therefore, these beta-phenylalanine and alpha, beta-dehydrophenylalanine containing dipeptide nanotubes may be useful in the development of biocompatible and proteolytically stable drug delivery vehicles.

Lipoplex nano-aggregates have been analyzed through biophysical characterization (electrostatics, structure, size and morphology), and biological studies (transfection efficiency and cell viability) in five cancer cell lines. Lipoplexes were prepared from pEGFP-C3 plasmid DNA (pDNA) and mixed liposomes, constituted by a zwitterionic lipid (DOPE) and a gemini cationic lipid (GCL) synthesized in this work, bis(hexadecyl dimethyl ammonium) oxyethylene], referred to as (C16Am)(2)(C2O)(n), (where n is the oxyethylene spacer length, n = 1, 2 or 3, between the ammonium heads). Cryo-TEM micrographs show nano-aggregates with two multilamellar structures, a cluster-type (at low-to-medium GCL composition) and a fingerprint-type that coexists with the cluster-type at medium GCL composition and appears alone at high GCL composition. SAXS diffractograms show that these lipoplexes present three lamellar structures, two of them coexisting at low and high GCL composition. The optimized transfection efficiency (TE) of pDNA was higher for lipoplexes containing GCLs with a longer (n = 3) or shorter (n = 1) polyoxyethylene spacer, at high GCL composition (alpha - 0.7) with low charge ratio (rho(eff) 2). In the all cancer cell lines studied, the TE of the optimized formulations was much better than those of both lipofectamine 2000 and lipoplexes with GCLs of the bis(hexadecyl dimethyl ammonium) alkane series recently reported. Probably, (a) the coexistence of two lamellar structures at high GCL composition synergizes the TE of these lipid vectors, (b) the orientation of the polyoxyethylene region in (C16Am)(2)(C2O)(3)/DOPE may occur in such a way that the spacing between two cationic heads becomes smaller than that in (C16Am)(2)(C2O)(2)/DOPE which is poor in terms of TE, and (c) the synergistic interactions between serum proteins and (C16Am)(2)(C2O)(n)/DOPE-pDNA lipoplexes containing a polyoxyethylene spacer improve TE, especially at high GCL content. Lipoplexes studied here show very low levels of toxicity, which confirm them as improved vectors of pDNA in gene therapy.
