Classical and non-classical isomers of both neutral and dianionic BC2P2H3 species, which are isolobal to Cp+ and Cp-, are studied at both B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and G3B3 levels of theory. The global minimum structure given by B3LYP/6-311+ + G(d,p) for BC2P2H3 is based on a vinylcyclopropenyl-type structure, whereas BC2P2H32- has a planar aromatic cyclopentadienyl-ion-like structure. However, at the G3B3 level, there are three low-energy isomers for BC2P2H3: 1)tricyclopentane, 2) nido and 3) vinylcyclopropenyl-type structures, all within 1.7 kcal mol(-1) of each other. On the contrary, for the dianionic species the cyclic planar structure is still the minimum. In comparison to the isolobal Cp+ and HnCnP5-n+ isomers, BC2P2H3 shows a competition between pi-delocalised vinylcyclopropenyl- and cluster-type structures (nido and tricyclopentane). Substitution of H on C by tBu, and H on B by Ph, in BC2P2H3 increases the energy difference between the low-lying isomers, giving the lowest energy structure as a tricyclopentane type. Similar substitution in BC2P2H32- merely favours different positional isomers of the cyclic planar geometry, as observed in 1) isoelectronic neutral heterodiphospholes EtBu2C2P2 (E=S, Se, Te), 2) monoanionic heterophospholyl rings EtBu2C2P2 (E=P-, As-, Sb-) and 3) polyphospholyl rings anions tBu(5-n)C(n)P(5-n) (n=0-5). The principal factors that affect the stability of three-, four-, and five-membered ring and acyclic geometrical and positional isomers of neutral and dianionic BC2P2H3 isomers appear to be: 1) relative bond strengths, 2) availability of electrons for the empty 2p boron orbital and 3) steric effects of the tBu groups in the HBC(2)P(2)tBu(2) systems.

The crystal structures of two oligopeptides containing di-n-propylglycine (Dpg) residues, Boc-Gly-Dpg-Gly-Leu-OMe (1) and Boc-Val-Ala-Leu-Dpg-Val-Ala-Leu-Val-Ala-Leu-Dpg-Val-Ala-Leu-OMe (2) are presented. Peptide 1 adopts a type I-turn conformation with Dpg(2)-Gly(3) at the corner positions. The 14-residue peptide 2 crystallizes with two molecules in the asymmetric unit, both of which adopt -helical conformations stabilized by 11 successive 5 1 hydrogen bonds. In addition, a single 4 1 hydrogen bond is also observed at the N-terminus. All five Dpg residues adopt backbone torsion angles (, ) in the helical region of conformational space. Evaluation of the available structural data on Dpg peptides confirm the correlation between backbone bond angle NCC() and the observed backbone , values. For > 106° , helices are observed, while fully extended structures are characterized by < 106° . The mean values for extended and folded conformations for the Dpg residue are 103.6° ± 1.7° and 109.9° ± 2.6° , respectively.

An acyclic edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic cycles. The acyclic chromatic index of a graph is the minimum number k such that there is an acyclic edge coloring using k colors and is denoted by a'(G). It was conjectured by Alon, Suclakov and Zaks (and earlier by Fiamcik) that a'(G) <= Delta+2, where Delta = Delta(G) denotes the maximum degree of the graph. Alon et al. also raised the question whether the complete graphs of even order are the only regular graphs which require Delta+2 colors to be acyclically edge colored. In this article, using a simple counting argument we observe not only that this is not true, but in fact all d-regular graphs with 2n vertices and d>n, requires at least d+2 colors. We also show that a'(K-n,K-n) >= n+2, when n is odd using a more non-trivial argument. (Here K-n,K-n denotes the complete bipartite graph with n vertices on each side.) This lower bound for Kn,n can be shown to be tight for some families of complete bipartite graphs and for small values of n. We also infer that for every d, n such that d >= 5, n >= 2d+3 and dn even, there exist d-regular graphs which require at least d+2-colors to be acyclically edge colored. 1. Whether life-history traits can determine community composition and structure is an important question that has been well explored theoretically, but has received scant empirical attention. Life-history traits of a seven-member community of galler and parasitoid fig wasp species (Chalcidoidea), developing within the inflorescences (syconia) of Ficus racemosa (Moraceae) in India, were determined and used to examine community structure and ecology. 2. Gallers were pro-ovigenic (all eggs are mature upon adult emergence) whereas parasitoids were synovigenic (eggs mature progressively during adult lifespan). Initial egg load was correlated with body size for some species, and there was a trade-off between egg number and egg size across all species. Although all species completed their development and left the syconium concurrently, they differed in their adult and pre-adult lifespans. Providing sucrose solutions increased parasitoid lifespan but had no effect on the longevity of some galler species. While feeding regimes and body size affected longevity in most species, an interaction effect between these variables was detected for only one species. 3. Life-history traits of wasp species exhibited a continuum in relation to their arrival sequence at syconia for oviposition during syconium development, and therefore reflected their ecology. The largest number of eggs, smallest egg sizes, and shortest longevities were characteristic of the earliest-arriving galling wasps at the smallest, immature syconia; the converse characterised the later-arriving parasitoids at the larger, already parasitised syconia. Thus life history is an important correlate of community resource partitioning and can be used to understand community structure. 4. This is the first comprehensive study of life-history traits in a fig wasp community. The comparative approach revealed constraints and flexibility in trait evolution.

It has been reported by Pati et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 3496) that coordination with a transition metal can stabilize the “antiaromatic”, all-metal compound Al4Li4. Here, we report that it can also be stabilized by capping with a main group element like C and its isoelectronic species BH. Our calculations of binding energy, nuclear independent chemical shift, energy decomposition analysis, and molecular orbital analysis support the capping-induced stability, reduction of bond length alternation, and increase of aromaticity of these BH/C-capped Al4Li4 systems. The interaction between px and py orbitals of BH/C and the HOMO and LUMO of Al4Li4 is responsible for the stabilization. Our calculations suggest that capping can introduce fluxionality at room temperature.

Oxygen transfer rate and the corresponding power requirement to operate the rotor are vital for design and scale-up of surface aerators. Present study develops simulation or scale-up criterion correlating the oxygen transsimulation fer coefficient and power number along with a parameter governing theoretical power per unit volume (X, which is defined as equal to (FR1/3)-R-4/3, where F and R are impellers' Fronde and Reynolds number, respectively). Based on such scale-up criteria, design considerations are developed to save energy requirements while designing square tank surface aerators. It has been demonstrated that energy can be saved substantially if the aeration tanks are run at relatively higher input powers. It is also demonstrated that smaller sized tanks are more energy conservative and economical when compared to big sized tanks, while aerating the same volume of water, and at the same time by maintaining a constant input power in all the tanks irrespective of their size. An example illustrating how energy can be reduced while designing different sized aerators is given. The results presented have a wide application in biotechnology and bioengineering areas with a particular emphasis on the design of appropriate surface aeration systems.

New metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Ni(C12N2H10)(H2O)][C6H3(COO)2(COOH)] (I), [Co2(H2O)6][C6H3(COO)3]2·(C4N2H12)(H2O)2 (II), [Ni2(H2O)6][C6H3(COO)3]2·(C4N2H12)(H2O)2 (III), [Ni(C13N2H14)(H2O)][C6H3(COO)2(COOH)] (IV), [Ni3(H2O)8][C6H3(COO)3] (V) and [Co(C4N2H4)(H2O)][C6H3(COO)3] (VI) {C6H3(COOH)3 = trimesic acid, C12N2H10 = 1,10-phenanthroline, C4N2H12 = piperazine dication, C13N2H14 = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane and C4N2H4 = pyrazine} have been synthesized by using an interface between two immiscible solvents, water and cyclohexanol. The compounds are constructed from the connectivity between the octahedral M2+ (M = Ni, Co) ions coordinated by oxygen atoms of carboxylate groups and water molecules and/or by nitrogen atoms of the ligand amines and the carboxylate units to form a variety of structures of different dimensionality. Strong hydrogen bonds of the type O-H···O are present in all the compounds, which give rise to supramolecularly organized higher-dimensional structures. In some cases ··· interactions are also observed. Magnetic studies indicate weak ferromagnetic interactions in I, IV and V and weak antiferromagnetic interactions in the other compounds (II, III and VI). All the compounds have been characterized by a variety of techniques.

Designed octapeptides Boc-Leu-Val-Val-Aib-(D)Xxx-Leu- Val-Val-OMe ((D)Xxx = (D)Ala, 3a; (D)Val, 3c and (D)Pro, 5a) and Boc-Leu-Phe-Val-Aib-DAla-Leu-Phe-Val-OMe (3b) have been investigated to construct models of a stable type I' beta-turn nucleated hairpin and to generate systems for investigating helix-hairpin conformational transitions. Peptide 5a, which contains a central Aib-(D)Pro segment, is shown to adopt a stable type I' beta-turn nucleated hairpin structure, stabilized by four cross-strand hydrogen bonds. The stability of the structure in diverse solvents is established by the observation of all diagnostic NOEs expected in a beta-hairpin conformation. Replacement of (D)Pro5 by (D)Ala/(D)Val (3a-c) results in sequences that form beta-hairpins in hydrogen bonding solvents like CD3OH and DMSO-d(6). However, in CDCl3 evidence for population of helical conformations is obtained. Peptide 6b (Boc-Leu-Phe-Val-Aib-Aib-Leu-Phe-Val-OMe), which contains a centrally positioned Aib-Aib segment, provides a clear example of a system, which exhibits a helical conformation in CDCl3 and a significant population of both helices and hairpins in CD3OH and DMSO-d(6). The coexistence of multiple conformations is established by the simultaneous observation of diagnostic NOEs. Control over stereochemistry of the central beta-turn permits generation of models for robust beta-hairpins and also for the construction of systems that may be used to probe helix-hairpin conformational transitions. The quantity of fruit consumed by dispersers is highly variable among individuals within plant populations. The outcome Of Such selection operated by firugivores has been examined mostly with respect to changing spatial contexts. The influence of varying temporal contexts on frugivore choice, and their possible demographic and evolutionary consequences is poorly understood. We examined if temporal variation in fruit availability across a hierarchy of nested temporal levels (interannual, intraseasonal, 120 h, 24 h) altered frugivore choice for a complex seed dispersal system in dry tropical forests of southern India. The interactions between Phyllanthus emblica and its primary disperser (ruminants) was mediated by another frugivore (a primate),which made large quantities of fruit available on the ground to ruminants. The direction and strength of crop size and neighborhood effects on this interaction varied with changing temporal contexts.Fruit availability was higher in the first of the two study years, and at the start of the season in both years. Fruit persistence on trees, determined by primate foraging, was influenced by crop size andconspecific neighborhood densities only in the high fruit availability year. Fruit removal by ruminants was influenced by crop size in both years and neighborhood densities only in the high availability year. In both years, these effects were stronger at the start of the season.Intraseasonal reduction in fruit availability diminished inequalities in fruit removal by ruminants and the influence of crop size and fruiting neighborhoods. All trees were not equally attractive to frugivores in a P. emblica population at all points of time. Temporal asymmetry in frugivore-mediated selection could reduce potential for co-evolution between firugivores and plants by diluting selective pressures. Inter-dependencies; formed between disparate animal consumers can add additional levels of complexity to plant-frugivore mutualistic networks and have potential reproductive consequences for specific individuals within populations.

To understand structural and thermodynamic features of disulfides within an alpha-helix, a non-redundant dataset comprising of 5025 polypeptide chains containing 2311 disulfides was examined. Thirty-five examples were found of intrahelical disulfides involving a CXXC motif between the N-Cap and third helical positions. GLY and PRO were the most common amino acids at positions 1 and 2, respectively. The N-Cap residue for disulfide bonded CXXC motifs had average values of (-112 +/- 25.2 degrees, 106 +/- 25.4 degrees). To further explore conformational requirements for intrahelical disulfides, CYS pairs were introduced at positions N-Cap-3; 1,4; 7,10 in two helices of an Escherichia coli thioredoxin mutant lacking its active site disulfide (nSS Trx). In both helices, disulfides formed spontaneously during purification only at positions N-Cap-3. Mutant stabilities were characterized by chemical denaturation studies (in both oxidized and reduced states) and differential scanning calorimetry (oxidized state only). All oxidized as well as reduced mutants were destabilized relative to nSS Trx. All mutants were redox active, but showed decreased activity relative to wild-type thioredoxin. Such engineered disulfides can be used to probe helix start sites in proteins of unknown structure and to introduce redox activity into proteins. Conversely, a protein with CYS residues at positions N-Cap and 3 of an alpha-helix is likely to have redox activity.

The crystal structures of two oligopeptides containing di-n-propylglycine (Dpg) residues, Boc-Gly-Dpg-Gly-Leu-OMe (1) and Boc-Val-Ala-Leu-Dpg-Val-Ala-Leu-Val-Ala-Leu-Dpg-Val-Ala-Leu-OMe (2) are presented. Peptide 1 adopts a type I' beta-turn conformation with Dpg(2)-Gly(3) at the corner positions. The 14-residue peptide 2 crystallizes with two molecules in the asymmetric unit, both of which adopt alpha-helical conformations stabilized by 11 successive 5 -> 1 hydrogen bonds. In addition, a single 4 -> 1 hydrogen bond is also observed at the N-terminus. All live Dpg residues adopt backbone torsion angles (phi, psi) in the helical region of conformational space. Evaluation of the available structural data on Dpg peptides confirm the correlation between backbone bond angle N-C-alpha-C' (tau) and the observed backbone phi,psi values. For tau > 106 degrees, helices are observed, while fully extended structures are characterized by tau < 106 degrees. The mean r values for extended and folded conformations for the Dpg residue are 103.6 degrees +/- 1.7 degrees and 109.9 degrees +/- 2.6 degrees, respectively. BACKGROUND: Earlier we reported that an oral administration of two mannose-specific dietary lectins, banana lectin (BL) and garlic lectin (GL), led to an enhancement of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) pool in mice. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Cord blood–derived CD34+ HSPCs were incubated with BL, GL, Dolichos lectin (DL), or artocarpin lectin (AL) for various time periods in a serum- and growth factor–free medium and were subjected to various functional assays. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were detected by using DCHFDA method. Cell fractionation was carried out using lectin-coupled paramagnetic beads. RESULTS: CD34+ cells incubated with the lectins for 10 days gave rise to a significantly higher number of colonies compared to the controls, indicating that all four lectins possessed the capacity to protect HSPCs in vitro. Comparative analyses showed that the protective ability of BL and GL was better than AL and DL and, therefore, further experiments were carried out with them. The output of long-term culture-initiating cell (LTC-IC) and extended LTC-IC assays indicated that both BL and GL protected primitive stem cells up to 30 days. The cells incubated with BL or GL showed a substantial reduction in the ROS levels, indicating that these lectins protect the HSPCs via antioxidant mechanisms. The mononuclear cell fraction isolated by lectin-coupled beads got enriched for primitive HSPCs, as reflected in the output of phenotypic and functional assays. CONCLUSION: The data show that both BL and GL protect the primitive HSPCs in vitro and may also serve as cost-effective HSPC enrichment tools.

Peanut Agglutinin (PNA) is a homotetrameric protein with a very unusual open quaternary structure. During denaturation, it first dissociates into a molten globule like state, which subsequently undergoes complete denaturation. Urea denaturation of PNA at neutral pH has been studied by intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy and has been fitted to a three state model, A(4) double left right arrow 4I double left right arrow 4U, to get all the relevant thermodynamic parameters. Urea denaturation leads to continuous red shift of wavelength maxima. The molten globule like state is formed in a short range of urea concentration. Refolding of the denatured PNA has been attempted by intrinsic fluorescence study. Refolding by instantaneous dilution shows the occurrence of the formation of an intermediate at a relatively rapid rate, within few seconds. The transition from PNA tetramer to molten globule like state is found to have a Delta G value of similar to 33 kcal/mole while it is similar to 8 kcal/mole for the transition from molten globule like state to a completely denatured state. This in turn indicates that the tetramerization in PNA contributes significantly to the stability of the oligomer.
