Treatment of gem-dihalo-1,2-cyclopropanated D-oxyglycal with primary, secondary, and unsaturated alcohols, in the presence of AgOAc, leads to the formation of chloro-oxepines exclusively. Reaction of the resulting 2-chloro-oxepines with excess alcohol in the presence of AgOAc, do not promote further reactions. This result is in contrast to the reactions of D-glucal derived halo-oxepine with alcohols known previously that lead to the formation of furanoses as the major product under similar reaction conditions. Observation of this study consolidates the reactivity differences of gem-dihalo-1,2-cyclopropanated oxyglycals, as compared to gem-dihalo- 1,2-cyclopropanated glycals. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, the design of a new solar operated adsorption cooling system with two identical small and one large adsorber beds, which is capable of producing cold continuously, has been proposed. In this system, cold energy is stored in the form of refrigerant in a separate refrigerant storage tank at ambient temperature. Silica gel water is used as a working pair and system is driven by solar energy. The operating principle is described in details and its thermodynamic transient analysis is presented. Effect of COP and SCE for different adsorbent mass and adsorption/desorption time of smaller beds are discussed. Recommended mass and number of cycles of operation for smaller beds to attain continuous cooling with average COP and SCE of 0.63 and 337.5 kJ/kg, respectively are also discussed, at a generation, condenser and evaporator temperatures of 368 K, 303 K and 283 K, respectively. Interdiffusion study is conducted in the Ni-Zr system in the temperature range of 750-850 A degrees C. Five intermetallic compounds, Ni5Zr, Ni7Zr2, Ni10Zr7, NiZr and NiZr2 are found to grow in the interdiffusion zone. Integrated diffusion coefficients are estimated for different phases. Activation energy is found to be lowest for Ni10Zr7 (178 +/- A 8 kJ/mol) and highest for NiZr (323 +/- A 6 kJ/mol). Tracer diffusion coefficients are estimated at the location of the Kirkendall marker plane in the Ni7Zr2 phase. Ni is found to have 10 times higher diffusion rate compared to Zr in this phase. Higher diffusion rate of Ni compared to Zr is found, which is expected because of higher number of Ni-Ni bonds compared to Zr-Zr bonds in this phase.

An organic supramolecular ternary salt (gallic acid:isoniazid:water; GINZH) examined earlier for its proton conducting characteristics is observed to display step-like dielectric behavior across the structural phase transition mediated by loss of water of hydration at 389 K. The presence of hydration in the crystal lattice along with proton mobility between acid base pairs controls the ``ferroelectric like'' behavior until the phase transition temperature.
