Shock waves are one of the most competent mechanisms of energy dissipation observed in nature. We have developed a novel device to generate controlled micro-shock waves using an explosive-coated polymer tube. In this study, we harnessed these controlled micro-shock waves to develop a unique bacterial transformation method. The conditions were optimized for the maximum transformation efficiency in Escherichia coli. The maximum transformation efficiency was obtained when we used a 30 cm length polymer tube, 100 mu m thick metal foil, 200 mM CaCl(2), 1 ng/mu l plasmid DNA concentration, and 1 x 10(9) cell density. The highest transformation efficiency achieved (1 x 10(-5) transformants/cell) was at least 10 times greater than the previously reported ultrasound-mediated transformation (1 x 10(-6) transformants/cell). This method was also successfully employed for the efficient and reproducible transformation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhimurium. This novel method of transformation was shown to be as efficient as electroporation with the added advantage of better recovery of cells, reduced cost (40 times cheaper than a commercial electroporator), and growth phase independent transformation. L-PGlu-(2-proPyl)-L-His-L-ProNH(2) (NP-647) is a CNS active thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) analog with potential application in various CNS disorders including seizures. In the present study, mechanism of action for protective effect of NP-647 was explored by studying role of NP-647 on epileptiform activity and sodium channels by using patch-clamp methods. Epileptiform activity was induced in subicular pyramidal neurons of hippocampal slice of rat by perfusing 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) containing Mg(+2)-free normal artificial cerebrospinal fluid (nACSF). Increase in mean firing frequency was observed after perfusion of 4-AP and zero Mg(+2) (2.10+/-0.47 Hz) as compared with nACSF (0.12+/-0.08 Hz). A significant decrease in mean firing frequency (0.61+/-0.22 Hz), mean frequency of epileptiform events (0.03+/-0.02 Hz vs. 0.22+/-0.05 Hz of 4-AP+0 Mg), and average number of action potentials in paroxysmal depolarization shift-burst (2.54+/-1.21 Hz vs. 8.16+/-0.88 Hz of 4-AP +0 Mg) was observed. A significant reduction in peak dV/dt (246+/-19 mV ms(-1) vs. 297 18 mV ms-1 of 4-AP+0 Mg) and increase (1.332+/-0.018 ms vs. 1.292+/-0.019 ms of 4-AP+0 Mg) in time required to reach maximum depolarization were observed indicating role of sodium channels. Concentration-dependent depression of sodium current was observed after exposure to dorsal root ganglion neurons to NP-647. NP-647 at different concentrations (1, 3, and 10 mu M) depressed sodium current (15+/-0.5%, 50+/-2.6%, and 75+/-0.7%, respectively). However, NP-647 did not show change in the peak sodium current in CNa18 cells. Results of present study demonstrated potential of NP-647 in the inhibition of epileptiform activity by inhibiting sodium channels indirectly. (C) 2011 IBRO. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Motivated by the viscosity bound in gauge/gravity duality, we consider the ratio of shear viscosity (eta) to entropy density (s) in black hole accretion flows. We use both an ideal gas equation of state and the QCD equation of state obtained from lattice for the fluid accreting onto a Kerr black hole. The QCD equation of state is considered since the temperature of accreting matter is expected to approach 10(12) K in certain hot flows. We find that in both the cases eta/s is small only for primordial black holes and several orders of magnitude larger than any known fluid for stellar and supermassive black holes. We show that a lower bound on the mass of primordial black holes leads to a lower bound on eta/s and vice versa. Finally we speculate that the Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter should decrease with increasing density and/or temperatures. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Low grade thermal energy from sources such as solar, geothermal and industrial waste heat in the temperature range of 380-425 K can be converted to electrical energy with reasonable efficiency using isopentane and R-245fa. While the former is flammable and the latter has considerable global warming potential, their mixture in 0.7/0.3 mole fraction is shown to obviate these disadvantages and yet retain dominant merits of each fluid. A realistic thermodynamic analysis is carried out wherein the possible sources of irreversibilities such as isentropic efficiencies of the expander and the pump and entropy generation in the regenerator, boiler and condenser are accounted for. The performance of the system in the chosen range of heat source temperatures is evaluated. A technique of identifying the required source temperature for a given output of the plant and the maximum operating temperature of the working fluid is developed. This is based on the pinch point occurrence in the boiler and entropy generation in the boiling and superheating regions of the boiler. It is shown that cycle efficiencies of 10-13% can be obtained in the range investigated at an optimal expansion ratio of 7-10. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of novel alkoxycyanobiphenyl-substituted rufigallols are reported by systematically replacing one, two, four, five or six cyanobiphenyl-tethered alkoxy chains. The synthesis of the target compounds was challenging since classical reactions failed to produce these hybrids. Chemical structures of the hybrids were determined by H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), C-13 NMR, infrared, ultraviolet spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The thermotropic liquid crystalline properties of the new compounds were investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffractometry.

A study of the history and philosophy of the contribution of India towards the exploration of space since antiquity provides interesting insights. The contributions are described during the three periods namely: (1) the ten millenniums from 10,000 BC with a twilight period up to 900 AD; (2) the ten centuries from 900 AD to 1900 AD; and (3) the ten decades from 1900 AD to 2000 AD; called mythological, medieval, and modern respectively. Some important events during the above periods provide a reference view of the progress. The Vedas during the mythological period and the Siddhantas during the medieval periods, which are based on astronomical observations, indicate that the Indian contribution preceded other cultures. But most Western historians ignore this fact time and again in spite of many proofs provided to the contrary. This chapter also shows that Indians had the proper scientific attitude of developing any physical theory through the triplet of mind, model, and measurements. It is this same triplet that forms the basis of the present day well known Kalman filter technique. Up to about 1500 BC the Indian contribution was leading but during foreign invasion and occupation it lagged and has been improving only after independence.

Experimental quantum simulation of a Hamiltonian H requires unitary operator decomposition (UOD) of its evolution unitary U = exp(-iHt) in terms of native unitary operators of the experimental system. Here, using a genetic algorithm, we numerically evaluate the most generic UOD (valid over a continuous range of Hamiltonian parameters) of the unitary operator U, termed fidelity-profile optimization. The optimization is obtained by systematically evaluating the functional dependence of experimental unitary operators (such as single-qubit rotations and time-evolution unitaries of the system interactions) to the Hamiltonian (H) parameters. Using this technique, we have solved the experimental unitary decomposition of a controlled-phase gate (for any phase value), the evolution unitary of the Heisenberg XY interaction, and simulation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the presence of the Heisenberg XY interaction. Using these decompositions, we studied the entanglement dynamics of a Bell state in the DM interaction and experimentally verified the entanglement preservation procedure of Hou et al. Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 327, 292 (2012)] in a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor.

In this paper, we present a novel algorithm for piecewise linear regression which can learn continuous as well as discontinuous piecewise linear functions. The main idea is to repeatedly partition the data and learn a linear model in each partition. The proposed algorithm is similar in spirit to k-means clustering algorithm. We show that our algorithm can also be viewed as a special case of an EM algorithm for maximum likelihood estimation under a reasonable probability model. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by comparing its performance with that of the state of art algorithms on various datasets. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Aim Widespread, transcontinental vertebrate groups represent ideal systems for biogeographical studies, because they can shed light on a wide range of questions relating to species diversification across the geographical template. We combined extensive geographical and genetic sampling from across multiple biogeographical realms to examine the timing and location of diversification in Asian sun skinks, a clade characterized by problematic species boundaries and a particularly enigmatic evolutionary history. Location Indian subcontinent, the Philippines, Southeast Asia and Sundaland. Methods We sequenced one mitochondrial and nine nuclear genes for most species in the genus Eutropis, and estimated phylogenetic relationships and divergence times using coalescent methods. To investigate the location of diversification events, we also estimated ancestral geographical ranges using several methods. Finally, we explored patterns of genetic diversity within several poorly understood, but widely distributed species. Results Divergence-time estimates indicate that Eutropis began to diversify during the Eocene. Biogeographical reconstructions show that species diversification was associated with dispersal into three biogeographical realms: India, Sundaland and the Philippines. Main conclusions The results of this study clarify several questions related to the evolutionary history of Eutropis, and place them in the context of classic Southeast Asian biogeography. Our study represents one of the first to compile a heavily sampled multilocus dataset ranging across international boundaries in southern Asia that have historically prevented a unified understanding of biogeographical and evolutionary processes involving the Indian subcontinent, mainland southern Asia and the island archipelagos of Southeast Asia.

In this paper we consider the issue of the Froissart bound on the high energy behaviour of total cross sections. This bound, originally derived using principles of analyticity of scattering amplitudes, is seen to be satisfied by all the available experimental data on total hadronic cross sections. At strong coupling, gauge/gravity duality has been used to provide some insights into this behaviour. In this work, we find the subleading terms to the so-derived Froissart bound from AdS/CFT. We find that a (ln s/s0) term is obtained, with a negative coefficient. We see that the fits to the currently available data confirm improvement in the fits due to the inclusion of such a term, with the appropriate sign. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
