Crystals of Eu-(Gly-Gly-Gly).(H2O)5.(ClO4)3 are triclinic, spacegroup P1BAR with a = 9.123 (2), b = 11.185 (5), c = 11.426 (2) angstrom; alpha = 90.79 (2), beta = 98.08 (1), gamma = 98.57 (2)-degrees; Z = 2. The europium cation is surrounded by four oxygens from three different peptide units and four oxygens from water molecules. The geometry around the metal is a distorted bi-capped trigonal prism. The peptide backbone conformation in this complex is compared with those in the free peptide and in various metal complexes. Considerable differences are observed between Eu(III) and Ca(II) complexes of triglycine. (C) Munksgaard 1994.

Enantiospecific total synthesis of optical antipode of the sesquiterpene 5-senecioyloxy-10,11-epoxythapsan-10-ol has been described. (R)-Carvone has been employed as the chiral starting material and a combination of intramolecular alkyation and Criegee fragmentation are employed for intramolecular stereospecific transfer of the chirality. An intramolecular diazoketone cyclopropanation and regioselective cyclopropane ring cleavage reactions have been employed or the creation of the three requisite contiguous quaternary carbon atoms.

802.11 WLANs are characterized by high bit error rate and frequent changes in network topology. The key feature that distinguishes WLANs from wired networks is the multi-rate transmission capability, which helps to accommodate a wide range of channel conditions. This has a significant impact on higher layers such as routing and transport levels. While many WLAN products provide rate control at the hardware level to adapt to the channel conditions, some chipsets like Atheros do not have support for automatic rate control. We first present a design and implementation of an FER-based automatic rate control state machine, which utilizes the statistics available at the device driver to find the optimal rate. The results show that the proposed rate switching mechanism adapts quite fast to the channel conditions. The hop count metric used by current routing protocols has proven itself for single rate networks. But it fails to take into account other important factors in a multi-rate network environment. We propose transmission time as a better path quality metric to guide routing decisions. It incorporates the effects of contention for the channel, the air time to send the data and the asymmetry of links. In this paper, we present a new design for a multi-rate mechanism as well as a new routing metric that is responsive to the rate. We address the issues involved in using transmission time as a metric and presents a comparison of the performance of different metrics for dynamic routing.

In this paper, we study the performance of client-Access Point (AP) association policies in IEEE 802.11 based WLANs. In many scenarios, clients have a choice of APs with whom they can associate. We are interested in finding association policies which lead to optimal system performance. More specifically, we study the stability of different association policies as a function of the spatial distribution of arriving clients. We find for each policy the range of client arrival rates for which the system is stable. For small networks, we use Lyapunov function methods to formally establish the stability or instability of certain policies in specific scenarios. The RAT heuristic policy introduced in our prior work is shown to have very good stability properties when compared to several other natural policies. We also validate our analytical results by detailed simulation employing the IEEE 802.11 MAC.

Silver iodide-based fast ion conducting glasses containing silver phosphate and silver borate have been studied. An attempt is made to identify the interaction between anions by studying the chemical shifts of31P and11B atoms in high resolution (HR) magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra. Variation in the chemical shifts of31P or11B has been observed which is attributed to the change in the partial charge on the31P or11B. This is indicative of the change in the electronegativity of the anion matrix as a whole. This in turn is interpreted as due to significant interaction among anions. The significance of such interaction to the concept of structural unpinning of silver ions in fast ion conducting glasses is discussed.

Lightweight grids for lead-acid battery grids have been prepared from acrylonitrile. butadiene styrene (ABS) copolymer followed by coating with lead. Subsequently, the grids have been electrochemically coated with a conductive and corrosion-resistant layer of polyaniline. These grids are about 75% lighter than those employed in conventional lead-acid batteries. Commercial-grade 6V/3.5 Ah (C-20-rate) lead-acid batteries have been assembled and characterized employing positive and negative plates constituting these grids. The specific energy of such a lead-acid battery is about 50 Wh/kg. The batteries can withstand fast charge-discharge duty cycles.

A new case of the uncommon cis-trans enantiomerism is presented. The titled anhydride adducts were prepared in good yields by the known reaction of three 6-arylfulvenes with maleic anhydride (aryl = phenyl, p-tolyl and p-anisyl). The exo adducts were converted to the corresponding imides by reaction with (1S)-1-(naphth-1-yl)ethylamine in similar to 80% yields, and the resulting diastereomeric imides separated by silica gel column chromatography. They were hydrolysed and recyclised to the chiral anhydrides, in `one-pot' with 10% NaOH-EtOH, followed by treatment with 2 M HCl, in similar to 40% yields. The titled anhydrides were thus obtained in homochiral form, in enantiomeric purities (generally) of similar to 90% as indicated by chiral HPLC. The chiral anhydrides were also converted to the corresponding imides (presumably stereospecifically), by treatment with ammonia solution in excellent yields. The crystal structure of one of the above diastereomeric imides (derived from 6-phenylfulvene) was determined, and based on the known (S)-configuration of the naphthylethylamine moiety, the `configurations' of the original anhydride adducts were assigned. The thermodynamics of monodisperse solutions of polymers in the neighborhood of the phase separation temperature is studied by means of Wilson’s recursion relation approach, starting from an effective ϕ4 Hamiltonian derived from a continuum model of a many‐chain system in poor solvents. Details of the chain statistics are contained in the coefficients of the field variables ϕ, so that the parameter space of the Hamiltonian includes the temperature, coupling constant, molecular weight, and excluded volume interaction. The recursion relations are solved under a series of simplifying assumptions, providing the scaling forms of the relevant parameters, which are then used to determine the scaling form of the free energy. The free energy, in turn, is used to calculate the other singular thermodynamic properties of the solution. These are characteristically power laws in the reduced temperature and molecular weight, with the temperature exponents being the same as those of the 3d Ising model. The molecular weight exponents are unique to polymer solutions, and the calculated values compare well with the available experimental data.

Several recent theoretical and computer simulation studies have considered solvation dynamics in a Brownian dipolar lattice which provides a simple model solvent for which detailed calculations can be carried out. In this article a fully microscopic calculation of the solvation dynamics of an ion in a Brownian dipolar lattice is presented. The calculation is based on the non‐Markovian molecular hydrodynamic theory developed recently. The main assumption of the present calculation is that the two‐particle orientational correlation functions of the solid can be replaced by those of the liquid state. It is shown that such a calculation provides an excellent agreement with the computer simulation results. More importantly, the present calculations clearly demonstrate that the frequency‐dependent dielectric friction plays an important role in the long time decay of the solvation time correlation function. We also find that the present calculation provides somewhat better agreement than either the dynamic mean spherical approximation (DMSA) or the Fried–Mukamel theory which use the simulated frequency‐dependent dielectric function. It is found that the dissipative kernels used in the molecular hydrodynamic approach and in the Fried–Mukamel theory are vastly different, especially at short times. However, in spite of this disagreement, the two theories still lead to comparable results in good agreement with computer simulation, which suggests that even a semiquantitatively accurate dissipative kernel may be sufficient to obtain a reliable solvation time correlation function. A new wave vector and frequency‐dependent dissipative kernel (or memory function) is proposed which correctly goes over to the appropriate expressions in both the single particle and the collective limits. This form is expected to lead to better results than all the existing descriptions.
