The system 3-methylpyridine(3MP)+water(H2O)+NaBr has been the subject of an intense scientific debate since the work of Jacob [Phys. Rev. E. 58, 2188 (1988)] and Anisimov [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2336 (2000)]. The crossover critical behavior of this system seemed to show remarkable sensitivity to the weight fraction (X) of the ionic impurity NaBr. In the range X <= 0.10 the system displayed Ising behavior and a pronounced crossover to mean-field behavior in the range 0.10 <= X <= 0.16. A complete mean-field behavior was observed at X=0.17, a result that was later attributed to the existence of long-living nonequilibrium states in this system [Kostko , Phys. Rev. E. 70, 026118 (2004)]. In this paper, we report the near-critical behavior of osmotic susceptibility in the isotopically related ternary system, 3MP+heavy water(D2O)+NaBr. Detailed light-scattering experiments performed at exactly the same NaBr concentrations as investigated by Jacob reveal that the system 3MP+D2O+NaBr shows a simple Ising-type critical behavior with gamma similar or equal to 1.24 and nu similar or equal to 0.63 over the entire NaBr concentration range 0 <= X <= 0.1900. The crossover behavior is predominantly nonmonotonic and is completed well outside the critical domain. An analysis in terms of the effective susceptibility exponent (gamma(eff)) reveals that the crossover behavior is nonmonotonic for 0 <= X <= 0.1793 and tends to become monotonic for X > 0.1793. The correlation length amplitude xi(o), has a value of similar or equal to 2 A for 0.0250 <= X <= 0.1900, whereas for X=0, xi(o)similar or equal to 3.179 A. Since isotopic H -> D substitution is not expected to change the critical behavior of the system, our results support the recent results obtained by Kostko [Phys. Rev. E. 70, 026118 (2004)] that 3MP+H2O+NaBr exhibits universal Ising-type critical behavior typical for other aqueous solutions.

Dicobalt(II) complexes [{(B)Co-11)(2)(mu-dtdp)(2)] (1-3) of 3,3'-dithiodipropionic acid (dtdp) and phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyrido13,2-a:2',3'-clphenazine (dppz in 3), have been prepared, characterized and their photo-induced anaerobic DNA cleavage activity studied. The elemental analysis and mass spectral data suggest binuclear formulation of the complexes. The redox inactive complexes have magnetically non-interacting dicobalt(II) core showing magnetic moment of similar to 3.9 p per cobalt(II) center. The complexes show good binding propensity to calf thymus DNA giving K-b values within 4.3 x 10(5)-4.0 x 10(6) M-1. Thermal melting and viscosity data predict DNA groove binding and/or partial intercalative nature of the complexes. The complexes show significant anaerobic DNA cleavage activity in green light under argon atmosphere possibly involving radical species generated from the disulfide moiety in a type-I pathway. The DNA cleavage reaction under aerobic medium in green light is found to involve hydroxyl radical species. The dppz complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cervical cancer cells with an IC50 value of 2.31 mu M in UV-A light of 365 nm, while it is essentially non-toxic in dark giving an IC50 value of >200 mu M. A significant reduction of the dark toxicity of the organic dppz base (IC50 = 8.3 mu M in dark) is observed on binding to the cobalt(II) center while essentially retaining its photocytotoxicity in UV-A light (IC50 = 0.4 mu M). Eulytite compounds, A(3)Bi(XO4)(3) (X = P, A = Ca, Cd, Sr, Pb), belong to the noncentrosymmetric space group l (4) over bar 3d (No. 220) as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The crystals were grown from the melt-cool technique with considerable difficulty as the compounds melt incongruently at their melting temperature, except for the compound Pb3Bi(PO4)(3). The unit cell parameter a is 9.984(5), 9.8611(3), 10.2035(3), and 10.3722(2) angstrom for Ca3Bi(PO4)(3), Cd3Bi(PO4)(3), Sr3Bi(PO4)(3), and Pb3Bi(PO4)(3) respectively, and there are four formula units in the unit cell. The structure of Pb3Bi(VO4)(3), a unique eulytite with vanadium substitution, is compared with all these phosphorus substituted eulytites. The A(2+) and Bi3+ cations occupy the special position (16c) while the O anions occupy the general Wyckoff position (48e) in the crystal structure. Only one O position has been identified for Pb3Bi(PO4)(3) and Pb3Bi(VO4)(3), whereas two O atom sites were identified for Ca3Bi(PO4)(3), Cd3Bi(PO4)(3), and Sr3Bi(PO4)(3). The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra indicate large band gaps for all the phosphate eulytites while a lower band gap is observed for the vanadate eulytite. The feasibility of the use of these compounds in optoelectronic devices has been tested by measuring the second-harmonic generation (SHG) values which have been found to be of a magnitude equivalent to the commercially used KDP (KH2PO4).

Cd(0.75)PS(3)A(0.5)(H2O)(y) [A = Na, K and Cs], synthesized by the ion-exchange intercalation reaction of the insulating layered CdPS3, exhibits interesting electrical properties. The electrical properties are strongly dependent on the extent of hydration of the alkali ion which resides in the interlamellar space. In the potassium and caesium ion-exchanged compounds, y = I, the lattice expansion is similar to 3 Angstrom and the electric response characteristic of a dielectric. In the as prepared A = Na compound, y = 2, the lattice expansion is 5.6 Angstrom, the compound is conducting with a DC conductance of 3 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) at 300 K. Cd0.75PS3Na0.5(H2O)(y), y = 2, on evacuation or on heating looses water, reversibly, to form a y = 1 phase with electrical properties similar to that of the K and Cs ion exchange intercalation compounds.

The structure of a type I langbeinite, Rb2Cd2(SO4)(3), displays three different phases, cubic with a = 10.378(5) Angstrom (space group P2(1)3) at room temperature, monoclinic at 120 K with a = 10.328(3), b = 10.322(3), c = 10.325(3) Angstrom, beta = 89.975(1)degrees (space group P2(1)), and orthorhombic at 85 K with a = 10.319(2), b = 10.321(2), c = 10.320(2) Angstrom (space group P2(1)2(1)2(1)), respectively. Precise single-crystal analyses of these phases indicate that Rb2Cd2(SO4)(3) distorts initially from cubic to monoclinic upon cooling followed by a significant reorientation of the SO4 tetrahedra, resulting in an orthorhombic symmetry upon further cooling. The three structures have been established unequivocally using the same crystal. There is no indication of the formation of an intermediate triclinic phase or any lattice disorder as conjectured in several earlier reports on compounds belonging to the type I langbeinite. The bond valence sum analyses of the coordination around the Rb sites indicate asymmetry in the bond strengths which could be the driving force of the ferroelectric behavior in these materials.

The mononuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu(phen)(H2O)(NO3)(2)] (1), obtained by the reaction of 1,10-phenanthroline with Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O in methanol solution, reacts with anionic ligands SCN-, AcO-, N-3(-) and PhCO2- in MeOH solution to form the stable binuclear complexes [Cu-2(H2O)(2)(phen)(2)(mu-X)(2)](2) (NO3)(2), where X = SCN- (2), AcO- (3), N-3(-) (4) or PhCO2- (5). The molecular structure of complex 3 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. These complexes were characterized by electronic, IR, ESR, magnetic moments and conductivity measurements. The electrochemical behaviour of the complexes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The interactions of these complexes with calf thymus DNA have been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. Their DNA cleavage activity was studied on double-stranded pBR322 plasmid DNA using gel electrophoresis experiments in the absence and presence of H2O2 as oxidant.

A new desodiated derivative compound, Na0.89Fe1.8(SO4)(3), was prepared by the chemical oxidation of alluaudite Na2.4Fe1.8(SO4)(3) Phase using NOBF4 as oxidant. The structure and valency of Fe were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy. Intercalation behavior of lithium ions in the structure of Na0.89Fe1.8(SO4)(3) was gauged by electrochemical analyses and ex-situ X-ray diffraction. A high capacity of 110 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C was obtained with a good rate kinetics within a range of 0.1-10 C(1 C = 118 mAh g-1) involving a high Fe3+/Fe2+ redox potential of 3.75 V (vs. Li/Li+). These results confirmed that the Na2.4-delta Fe1.8(SO4)(3) framework was stable even after oxidation and forms a new competitive cathode for the reversible intercalation of lithium ions. The solubilities of 10-undecenoic acid and geraniol in supercritical carbon dioxide were measured at 308, 313,323 and 333K, and at pressures of 10-18 MPa. Solubilities (in mole fraction),ranged from 0.4 x 10(-3) to 17.4 x 10(-3) for 10-undecenoic acid and 2.7 x 10(-3) to 25 x 10(-3) for geraniol, respectively. The AARD was around 11% and 5% for these models for 10-undecenoic acid and geraniol, respectively. The solubilities of both compounds showed retrograde behavior wherein the solubilities decrease with temperature at isobaric conditions. The solubility of geraniol was higher than 10-undecenoic acid at all investigated temperatures and pressures. The data were found to be self consistent based on the Mendez-Santiago model. New models based on association theory using van Laar and Margules activity coefficient models for solute in liquid phase were derived, and used to correlate the solubilities. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Thermal decomposition studies of 3-carene, a bio-fuel, have been carried out behind the reflected shock wave in a single pulse shock tube for temperature ranging from 920 K to 1220 K. The observed products in thermal decomposition of 3-carene are acetylene, allene, butadiene, isoprene, cyclopentadiene, hexatriene, benzene, toluene and p-xylene. The overall rate constant for 3-carene decomposition was found to be k/s(-1) = 10((9.95 +/- 0.54)) exp(-40.88 +/- 2.71 kcal mol(-1) /RT). Ab-initio theoretical calculations were carried out to find the minimum energy pathway that could explain the formation of the observed products in the thermal decomposition experiments. These calculations were carried out at B3LYP/6-311 + G(d,p) and G3 level of theories. A kinetic mechanism explaining the observed products in the thermal decomposition experiments has been derived. It is concluded that the linear hydrocarbons are the primary products in the pyrolysis of 3-carene.

Five stereochemically constrained analogs of the chemotactic tripeptide incorporating 1-aminocycloalkane-1-carboxylic acid (Ac(n)c) and alpha,alpha-dialkylglycines (Deg, diethylglycine; Dpg, n,n-dipropylglycine and Dbg, n,n-dibutylglycine) at position 2 have been synthesized. NMR studies of peptides For-Met-Xxx-Phe-OMe (Xxx = Ac(7)c, I; Ac(8)c, II; Deg, III; Dpg, IV and Dbg, V; For, formyl) establish that peptides with cycloalkyl residues, I and II, adopt folded beta-turn conformations in CDCl3 and (CD3)(2)SO. In contrast, analogs with linear alkyl sidechains, III-V, favour fully extended (C-5) conformations in solution. Peptides I-V exhibit high activity in inducing beta-glucosaminidase release from rabbit neutrophils, with ED(50) values ranging from 1.4-8.0 x 10(-11)M. In human neutrophils the Dxg peptides III-V have ED(50) values ranging from 2.3 x 10(-8) to 5.9 x 10(-10) M, with the activity order being V > IV > III. While peptides I-IV are less active than the parent. For-Met-Leu-Phe-OH, in stimulating histamine release from human basophils, the Dbg peptide V is appreciably more potent, suggesting its potential utility as a probe for formyl peptide receptors.

in this contribution we present a soft matter solid electrolyte which was obtained by inclusion of a polymer (polyacrylonitrile, PAN) in LiClO4/LiTFSI-succinonitrile (SN), a semi-solid organic plastic electrolyte. Addition of the polymer resulted in considerable enhancement in ionic conductivity as well as mechanical strength of LiX-SN (X=ClO4, TFSI) plastic electrolyte. Ionic conductivity of 92.5%-[1 M LiClO4-SN]:7.5%-PAN (PAN amount as per SN weight) composite at 25 degrees C recorded a remarkably high value of 7 x 10(-3) Omega(-1) cm(-1), higher by few tens of order in magnitude compared to 1 M LiClO4-SN. Composite conductivity at sub-ambient temperature is also quite high. At -20 degrees C, the ionic conductivity of (100 -x)%-[1 M LiClO4-SN]:x%-PAN composites are in the range 3 x 10(-5)-4.5 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately one to two orders of magnitude higher with respect to 1 M LiClO4-SN electrolyte conductivity. Addition of PAN resulted in an increase of the Young's modulus (Y) from Y -> 0 for LiClO4-SN to a maximum of 0.4MPa for the composites. Microstructural studies based on X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggest that enhancement in composite ionic conductivity is a combined effect of decrease in crystallinity and enhanced trans conformer concentration. Power dissipation maps have been generated in the temperature range of 900 degrees C to 1150 degrees C and strain rate range of 10(-3) to 10 s(-1) for a cast aluminide alloy Ti-24Al-20Nb using dynamic material model. The results define two distinct regimes of temperature and strain rate in which efficiency of power dissipation is maximum. The first region, centered around 975 degrees C/0.1 s(-1), is shown to correspond to dynamic recrystallization of the alpha(2) phase and the second, centered around 1150 degrees C/0.001 s(-1), corresponds to dynamic recovery and superplastic deformation of the beta phase. Thermal activation analysis using the power law creep equation yielded apparent activation energies of 854 and 627 kJ/mol for the first and second regimes, respectively. Reanalyzing the data by alternate methods yielded activation energies in the range of 170 to 220 kJ/mol and 220 to 270 kJ/mol for the first and second regimes, respectively. Cross slip was shown to constitute the activation barrier in both cases. Two distinct regimes of processing instability-one at high strain rates and the other at the low strain rates in the lower temperature regions-have been identified, within which shear bands are formed.

Ferrocene-conjugated ternary copper(II) complexes [Cu(L)(B)](ClO4)(2), where L is FcCH(2)N(CH2Py)(2) (Fc = (eta(5)-C5H4)Fe-II(eta(5)-C5H5)) and B is a phenanthroline base, viz., 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1), 1, 10-phenanthroline (phen, 2), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq, 3), and dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz, 4), have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The bpy complex 1, as its hexafluorophosphate salt, has been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The molecular structure shows the copper(II) center having an essentially square-pyramidal coordination geometry in which L with a pendant ferrocenyl (Fc) moiety and bpy show respective tridentate and bidentate modes of binding to the metal center. The complexes are redox active, showing a reversible cyclic voltammetric response of the Fc(+)-Fc couple near 0.5 V vs SCE and a quasi-reversible Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple near 0.0 V. Complexes 2-4 show binding affinity to calf thymus (CT) DNA, giving binding constant (K-b) values in the range of 4.2 x 10(4) to 2.5 x 10(5) M-1. Thermal denaturation and viscometric titration data suggest groove binding and/or a partial intercalative mode of binding of the complexes to CT DNA. The complexes show good binding propensity to the bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein, giving K-BSA values of similar to 10(4) M-1 for the bpy and phen complexes and similar to 10(5) M-1 for the dpq and dppz complexes. Complexes 2-4 exhibit efficient chemical nuclease activity in the presence of 3-mercapto-propionic acid (MPA) as a reducing agent or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidizing agent. Mechanistic studies reveal formation of hydroxyl radicals as the reactive species. The dpq and dppz complexes are active in cleaving supercoiled (SC) pUC19 DNA on photoexposure to visible light of different wavelengths including red light using an argon-krypton mixed gas ion laser. Mechanistic investigations using various inhibitors reveal the fort-nation of hydroxyl radicals in the DNA photocleavage reactions. The dppz complex 4, which shows efficient photoioduced BSA cleavage activity, is a potent multifunctional model nuclease and protease in the chemistry of photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer.
