Electric field activated charge transport is studied in the metal/polymer/metal device structure of electropolymerized polypyrrole down to 10 K with varying carrier density and disorder. Disorder induced nonlinear behaviour is observed in polypyrrole devices grown at room temperature which is correlated to delocalization of states. The slope parameter of currentvoltage characteristics (in log-log scale) increases as the temperature decreases, which indicates the onset of stronger field dependence. The field dependence of mobility becomes dominant as the carrier density decreases. The sharp dip in differential conductance indicates the localization of carriers at low temperatures which reduces the effective number of carriers involved in the transport.

A simple ball-drop impact tester is developed for studying the dynamic response of hierarchical, complex, small-sized systems and materials. The developed algorithm and set-up have provisions for applying programmable potential difference along the height of a test specimen during an impact loading; this enables us to conduct experiments on various materials and smart structures whose mechanical behavior is sensitive to electric field. The software-hardware system allows not only acquisition of dynamic force-time data at very fast sampling rate (up to 2 x 10(6) samples/s), but also application of a pre-set potential difference (up to +/- 10 V) across a test specimen for a duration determined by feedback from the force-time data. We illustrate the functioning of the set-up by studying the effect of electric field on the energy absorption capability of carbon nanotube foams of 5 x 5 x 1.2 mm(3) size under impact conditions. This paper proposes an optical flow algorithm by adapting Approximate Nearest Neighbor Fields (ANNF) to obtain a pixel level optical flow between image sequence. Patch similarity based coherency is performed to refine the ANNF maps. Further improvement in mapping between the two images are obtained by fusing bidirectional ANNF maps between pair of images. Thus a highly accurate pixel level flow is obtained between the pair of images. Using pyramidal cost optimization, the pixel level optical flow is further optimized to a sub-pixel level. The proposed approach is evaluated on the middlebury dataset and the performance obtained is comparable with the state of the art approaches. Furthermore, the proposed approach can be used to compute large displacement optical flow as evaluated using MPI Sintel dataset.

The objective of the present work is to understand the vertical electric field stimulation of the bacterial cells, when grown on amorphous carbon substrates in vitro. In particular, the antibacterial activity against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli are studied using MTTassay, live/dead assay and inner membrane permeabilization assays. In our experiments, the carbon substrate acts as one electrode and the counter electrode is positioned outside the culture medium, thus suppressing the current, electrokinetic motions and chemical reactions. Guided by similar experiments conducted in our group on neuroblastoma cells, the present experimental results further establish the interdependence of field strength and exposure duration towards bacterial growth inactivation in vitro. Importantly, significant reduction in bacterial viability was recorded at the 2.5 V/cm electric field stimulation conditions, which does not reduce the neural cell viability to any significant extent on an identical substrate. Following electrical stimulation, the bacterial growth is significantly inhibited for S. aureus bacterial strain in an exposure time dependent manner. In summary, our experiments establish the effectiveness of the vertical electric field towards bacterial growth inactivation on amorphous carbon substrates, which is a cell type dependent phenomenon (Gram-positive vs. Gram-negative). Asymptotically-accurate dimensional reduction from three to two dimensions and recovery of 3-D displacement field of non-prestretched dielectric hyperelastic membranes are carried out using the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) with moderate strains and very small ratio of the membrane thickness to its shortest wavelength of the deformation along the plate reference surface chosen as the small parameters for asymptotic expansion. Present work incorporates large deformations (displacements and rotations), material nonlinearity (hyperelasticity), and electrical effects. It begins with 3-D nonlinear electroelastic energy and mathematically splits the analysis into a one-dimensional (1-D) through-the-thickness analysis and a 2-D nonlinear plate analysis. Major contribution of this paper is a comprehensive nonlinear through-the-thickness analysis which provides a 2-D energy asymptotically equivalent of the 3-D energy, a 2-D constitutive relation between the 2-D generalized strain and stress tensors for the plate analysis and a set of recovery relations to express the 3-D displacement field. Analytical expressions are derived for warping functions and stiffness coefficients. This is the first attempt to integrate an analytical work on asymptotically-accurate nonlinear electro-elastic constitutive relation for compressible dielectric hyperelastic model with a generalized finite element analysis of plates to provide 3-D displacement fields using VAM. A unified software package `VAMNLM' (Variational Asymptotic Method applied to Non-Linear Material models) was developed to carry out 1-D non-linear analysis (analytical), 2-D non-linear finite element analysis and 3-D recovery analysis. The applicability of the current theory is demonstrated through an actuation test case, for which distribution of 3-D displacements are provided. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the present study, the heat transfer characteristics of thermally developing magnetohydroclynamic flow of nanofluid through microchannel are delineated by following a semi analytical approach. The combined influences of pressure driven flow, electroosmotic transport and magnetic field is taken into account for the analysis of the complex microscale thermal transport processes. Solutions for the normalized temperature distributions and the Nusselt number variations, considering the simultaneous interplay of electrokinetic effects (electroosmosis), magnetic effects, Joule heating and viscous dissipation are obtained, for constant wall temperature condition. Particular attention is paid to assess the role of nanolluids in altering the transport phenomena, through variations in the effective nanoparticle volume fractions, as well as the aggregate structure of the particulate phases. It is observed that magnetohydrodynamic effect reduces advective transport of the liquid resulting in gradual reduction of heat transfer. Increase in nanoparticle volume fraction shows decrease in heat transfer. Similar effects are observed with increase in aggregate sizes of the nanoparticles. The effect of the nanofluids on system irreversibility is also studied through entropy generation analysis due to flow and heat transfer in the microchannel. Total entropy generation is found to be dominant at the thermally developing region of the microchannel, whereas it drops sharply at the thermally developed region. Presence of nanoparticles in the base fluid reduces the total entropy generation in the microchannel, thereby indicating decrease in thermodynamic irreversibility with increasing nanoparticle volume fraction. In the immediate surroundings of our daily life, we can find a lot of places where the energy in the form of vibration is being wasted. Therefore, we have enormous opportunities to utilize the same. Piezoelectric character of matter enables us to convert this mechanical vibration energy into electrical energy which can be stored and used to power other device, instead of being wasted. This work is done to realize both actuator and sensor in a cantilever beam based on piezoelectricity. The sensor part is called vibration energy harvester. The numerical analyses were performed for the cantilever beam using the commercial package ANSYS and MATLAB. The cantilever beam is realized by taking a plate and fixing its one end between two massive plates. Two PZT patches were glued to the beam on its two faces. Experiments were performed using data acquisition system (DAQ) and LABVIEW software for actuating and sensing the vibration of the cantilever beam.

In this work, we propose an algorithm for optical flow estimation using Approximate Nearest Neighbor Fields (ANNF). Proposed optical flow estimation algorithm consists of two steps, flow initialization using ANNF maps and cost filtering. Flow initialization is done by computing the ANNF map using FeatureMatch between two consecutive frames. The ANNF map obtained represents a noisy optical flow, which is refined by making use of superpixels. The best flow associated with each superpixel is computed by optimizing a cost function. The proposed approach is evaluated on Middlebury and MPI-Sintel optical flow dataset and is found to be comparable with the state of the art methods for optical flow estimation.

This paper critically analyzes, for the first time, the effect of nanofluid on thermally fully developed magnetohydrodynamic flows through microchannel, by considering combined effects of externally applied pressure gradient and electroosmosis. The classical boundary condition of uniform wall heat flux is considered, and the effects of viscous dissipation as well as Joule heating have been taken into account. Closed-form analytical expressions for the pertinent velocity and temperature distributions and the Nusselt number variations are obtained, in order to examine the role of nanofluids in influencing the fully developed thermal transport in electroosmotic microflows under the effect of magnetic field. Fundamental considerations are invoked to ascertain the consequences of particle agglomeration on the thermophysical properties of the nanofluid. The present theoretical formalism addresses the details of the interparticle interaction kinetics in tune with the pertinent variations in the effective particulate dimensions, volume fractions of the nanoparticles, as well as the aggregate structure of the particulate system. It is revealed that the inclusion of nanofluid changes the transport characteristics and system irreversibility to a considerable extent and can have significant consequences in the design of electroosmotically actuated microfluidic systems.

Among the multiple modulatory physical cues explored to regulate cellular processes, the potential of magneto-responsive substrates in magnetic field stimulated stem cell differentiation is still unperceived. In this regard, the present work demonstrates how an external magnetic field can be applied to direct stem cell differentiation towards osteogenic commitment. A new culture methodology involving periodic delivery of 100 mT static magnetic field (SMF) in combination with HA-Fe3O4 magnetic substrates possessing a varying degree of substrate magnetization was designed for the study. The results demonstrate that an appropriate combination of weakly ferromagnetic substrates and SMF exposure enhanced cell viability, DNA synthesis and caused an early switchover to osteogenic lineage as supported by Runx2 immunocytochemistry and ALP expression. However, the mRNA expression profile of early osteogenic markers (Runx2, ALP, Col IA) was comparable despite varying substrate magnetic properties (diamagnetic to ferromagnetic). On the contrary, a remarkable upregulation of late bone development markers (OCN and OPN) was explicitly detected on weak and strongly ferromagnetic substrates. Furthermore, SMF induced matrix mineralization with elevated calcium deposition on similar substrates, even in the absence of osteogenic supplements. More specifically, the role of SMF in increasing intracellular calcium levels and in inducing cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase was elucidated as the major molecular event triggering osteogenic differentiation. Taken together, the above results demonstrate the competence of magnetic stimuli in combination with magneto-responsive biomaterials as a potential strategy for stem cell based bone tissue engineering.

Low-power requirements of contemporary sensing technology attract research on alternate power sources that can replace batteries. Energy harvesters absorb ambient energy and function as power sources for sensors and other low-power devices. Piezoelectric bimorphs have been demonstrating the preeminence in converting the mechanical energy in ambient vibrations into electrical energy. Improving the performance of these harvesters is pivotal as the energy in ambient vibrations is innately low. In this paper, we focus on enhancing the performance of piezoelectric harvesters through a multilayer and, in particular, a multistep configuration. Partial coverage of piezoelectric material in steps along the length of a cantilever beam results in a multistep piezoelectric energy harvester. We also discuss obtaining an approximate deformation curve for the beam with multiple steps in a computationally efficient manner. We find that the power generated by a multistep beam is almost 90% more than that by a multilayer harvester made out of the same volume of polyvinylidinefluoride ( PVDF), further corroborated experimentally. Improvements observed in the power generated prove to be a boon for weakly coupled low profile piezoelectric materials. Thus, in spite of the weak piezoelectric coupling observed in PVDF, its energy harvesting capability can be improved significantly using it in a multistep piezoelectric beam configuration.

Nanocrystalline Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (BCZT) powder was synthesized via the complex oxalate precursor route at a relatively low temperature (800 degrees C/5 h). The phase formation temperature of BCZT at nanoscale was confirmed by thermogravimetric (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) followed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) studies. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was carried out to confirm the complete decomposition of oxalate precursor into BCZT phase. The XRD and profile fitting revealed the coexistence of cubic and tetragonal phases and was corroborated by Raman study. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) carried out on 800 degrees C and 1000 degrees C/5 h heat treated BCZT powder revealed the crystallite size to be in the range of 20-50 nm and 40-200 nm respectively. The optical band gap for BCZT nanocrystalline powder was obtained using Kubelka Munk function and was found to be around 3.12 +/- 0.02 eV and 3.03 +/- 0.02 eV respectively for 800 degrees C (20-50 nm) and 1000 degrees C/5 h (40-200 nm) heat treated samples. The piezoelectric properties were studied for two different crystallite sizes (30 and 70 nm) using a piezoresponse force microscope (PFM). The d(33) coefficients obtained for 30 nm and 70 nm sized crystallites were 4 pm V-1 and 47 pm V-1 respectively. These were superior to that of BaTiO3 nanocrystal (approximate to 50 nm) and promising from a technological/industrial applications viewpoint.

Enhancement of localized electric field near metal (plasmonic) nanostructures can have various interesting applications in sensing, imaging, photovoltage generation etc., for which significant efforts are aimed towards developing plasmonic systems with well designed and large electromagnetic response. In this paper, we discuss the wafer scale fabrication and optical characterization of a unique three dimensional plasmonic material. The near field enhancement in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum obtained in these structures (order of 106), is close to the fundamental limit that can be obtained in this and similar EM field enhancement schemes. The large near field enhancement has been reflected in a huge Raman signal of graphene layer in close proximity to the plasmonic system, which has been validated with FEM simulations. We have integrated graphene photodetectors with this material to obtain record photovoltage generation, with responsivity as high as A/W. As far as we know, this is the highest sensitivity obtained in any plasmonic-graphene hybrid photodetection system till date.

We argued in arXiv: 1408.0624 that the quartic scalar field in AdS has features that could be instructive for answering the gravitational stability question of AdS. Indeed, the conserved charges identified there have recently been observed in the full gravity theory as well. In this paper, we continue our investigation of the scalar field in AdS and provide evidence that in the Two-Time Formalism (TTF), even for initial conditions that are far from quasi-periodicity, the energy in the higher modes at late times is exponentially suppressed in the mode number. Based on this and some related observations, we argue that there is no thermalization in the scalar TTF model within time-scales that go as similar to 1/epsilon(2), where epsilon measures the initial amplitude (with only low-lying modes excited). It is tempting to speculate that the result holds also for AdS collapse. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. This is an open access article under the CC BY license.
