A series of novel dispiroheterocyclic systems have been synthesized by the cycloaddition of a new azomethine ylide generated by the decarboxylative route from tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid and isatin with various dipolarophiles containing exocyclic double bond such as 3-arylidene-4-chromanone, 3-arylidene-4-flavanone and 2-arylidenetetrahydro-1-naphthalenone in moderate to good yield. The regio and stereochemistry of the title compounds was established by single crystal X-ray structure and spectroscopic techniques. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Commercially important flavor esters of isoamyl alcohol, catalyzed by crude hog pancreas lipase (HPL), were synthesized under solvent-free conditions and in supercritical carbon dioxide. The esters synthesized were isoamyl acetate, isoamyl propionate, isoamyl butyrate, and isoamyl octanoate. Very low yields (3-4%) of isoamyl acetate were obtained, but high yields for the other three esters were obtained under both supercritical and solvent-free conditions. The yields of esters of the even-carbon acids, isoamyl acetate, butyrate, and octanoate, increased with increasing chain length, whereas the yield of isoamyl propionate was higher than that of isoamyl butyrate. The optimum temperature of the reaction was higher under supercritical conditions (45 degreesC) than under solvent-free conditions (35-40 degreesC). The effects of other parameters such as alcohol concentration, water concentration, and enzyme loading were investigated. An increase in the water concentration decreased the conversion significantly in supercritical carbon dioxide but not under solvent-free conditions. The optimum ratio of alcohol to acid was dependent on the extent of inhibition by the acid. Although providing a higher apparent yield by being run in a highly concentrated medium, the overall conversion under solvent-free conditions was lower than that under supercritical conditions for similar enzyme concentrations, indicating that the synthesis of esters in supercritical carbon dioxide might be a viable option.

A proper edge-coloring with the property that every cycle contains edges of at least three distinct colors is called an acyclic edge-coloring. The acyclic chromatic index of a graph G, denoted. chi'(alpha)(G), is the minimum k such that G admits an acyclic edge-coloring with k colors. We conjecture that if G is planar and Delta(G) is large enough, then chi'(alpha) (G) = Delta (G). We settle this conjecture for planar graphs with girth at least 5. We also show that chi'(alpha) (G) <= Delta (G) + 12 for all planar G, which improves a previous result by Fiedorowicz, Haluszczak, and Narayan Inform. Process. Lett., 108 (2008), pp. 412-417].

In situ formations of Al2O3 + ZrO2 + SiCW ternary composite powders have been obtained by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of Sillimanite. Kaolin and Zircon using two different carbon sources. Products formed were mixtures of alumina and zirconia along with silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of composition of the reactants, the role of fineness of the starting precursors and the nature of the carbon Source on the final product powder obtained are presented. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of the precursors to yield Al2O3 + ZrO2 + SiCW as product powders, with the SiC having whisker morphology. It is also seen that zirconia could be stabilised to some extent in the tetragonal form without any stabilising agent by tailoring the starting materials and their composition. A method for the preparation of acicular hydrogoethite (alpha -FeOOH.xH(2)O, 0.1 < x < 0.22) particles of 0.3-1 mm length has been optimized by air oxidation of Fe( II) hydroxide gel precipitated from aqueous (NH4)(2)Fe(SO4)(2) solutions containing 0.005-0.02 atom% of cationic Pt, Pd or Rh additives as morphology controlling agents. Hydrogoethite particles are evolved from the amorphous ferrous hydroxide gel by heterogeneous nucleation and growth. Preferential adsorption of additives on certain crystallographic planes thereby retarding the growth in the perpendicular direction, allows the particles to acquire acicular shapes with high aspect ratios of 8-15. Synthetic hydrogoethite showed a mass loss of about 14% at similar to 280 degreesC, revealing the presence of strongly coordinated water of hydration in the interior of the goethite crystallites. As evident from IR spectra, excess H2O molecules (0.1- 0.22 per formula unit) are located in the strands of channels formed in between the double ribbons of FeO6 octahedra running parallel to the c- axis. Hydrogoethite particles constituted of multicrystallites are formed with Pt as additive, whereas single crystallite particles are obtained with Pd (or Rh). For both dehydroxylation as well as H-2 reduction, a lower reaction temperature (similar to 220 degreesC) was observed for the former (Pt treated) compared to the latter (Pd or Rh) (similar to 260 degreesC). Acicular magnetite (Fe3O4) was prepared either by reducing hydrogoethite (magnetite route) or dehydroxylating hydrogoethite to hematite and then reducing it to magnetite (hematite- magnetite route). According to TEM studies, preferential dehydroxylation of hydrogoethite along < 010 > leads to microporous hematite. Maghemite (gamma -Fe2O3 (-) (delta), 0 <

We report the successful synthesis of crystalline carbon nitride by chemical vapor deposition of certain nitrogen containing organic precursors. The precursor is heated and the vapors enter the hot deposition zone where they are pyrolysed and deposited in the form of thin films over pretreated substrates. The powder x-ray diffraction analysis shows clear peaks corresponding to the carbon nitride crystals of tetragonal form in addition to a broad hump corresponding to the amorphous nitrogenated carbon. The crystallites size is similar to300Angstrom and the volume fraction of the crystallites is about similar to7%. The optimum conditions of preparation are found out. The Infrared spectra of these samples also suggest the formation of Carbon Nitride crystals. The analysis reconfirms that the material contains crystallites of Carbon Nitride embedded in an amorphous matrix of nitrogenated carbon. Further the material is characterized by C,H,N elemental analysis, EDX and Raman spectra. Since all the above analyses probe the bulk material, the background amorphous matrix in this case, expecting a clear evidence of nanometer sized crystallites from these tests are unlikely. Attempts are being made to increase the yield of these carbon nitride crystallites.

Copolymers of aniline and ortholmeta-amino benzoic acid were synthesized by chemical polymerization using an inverse emulsion pathway. The copolymers are soluble in organic solvents, and the solubility increases with the amino benzoic acid content in the feed. The reaction conditions were optimized with emphasis on high yield and relatively good conductivity (2.5 X 10(-1) S cm(-1)). The copolymers were characterized by a number of techniques including UV-vis, FT-IR, FT-Raman, EPR and NNM spectroscopy, thermal analysis, SEM and conductivity. The influence of the carboxylic acid group ring substituent on the copolymers is investigated. The spectral studies reveal that the amino benzoic acid groups restrict the conjugation along the polymer chain. The SEM micrographs of the copolymers reveal regions of amorphous and crystalline domain. Thermal studies indicate a marginally higher thermal stability for poly(aniline-co-m-amino benzoic acid) compared to poly(aniline-co-o-amino benzoic acid). (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Nickel substituted lithium-cobalt oxides, LiCo1-xNixO2 (0 < x < 0.4), have been synthesized in a very short time by a solution combustion method at 350 degreesC using diformyl hydrazine as a fuel. Pure phases with hexagonal lattice structure have been obtained. These compounds facilitate reversible insertion/extraction of Li+ ions with good discharge capacity between 3.0 and 4.4 V versus Li/Li+. Results of the studies by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling and ac impedance measurements are presented. A series of diacyl phosphatidylcholine lipid derivatives, which contain aromatic units at various depths of their fatty acid chains, have been synthesized. These lipids produced stable aqueous suspensions. Electron microscopy revealed the presence of vesicular aggregates in the suspensions of these newly synthesized lipids. These membranes were oxidatively stable and maintained fluid character at ambient temperature making them ideal candidates for membrane protein reconstitution studies.

Poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimers of up to four generations composed of a phloroglucinol core, branching components, and pentamethylene spacers are synthesized by a divergent growth methodology. A repetitive synthetic sequence of phenolic O-alkylation and O-benzyl deprotection reactions are adopted for the synthesis of these dendrimers. The peripheries of the dendrimers contain 6, 12, 24, and 48 phenolic hydroxyl groups, either in the protected or unprotected form, for the first, second, third, and fourth generations, respectively. Because of the presence of hydrophilic exterior and relatively hydrophobic interior regions, alkaline aqueous solutions of these dendrimers are able to solubilize an otherwise insoluble pyrene molecule and these supramolecular complexes precipitate upon neutralization of the aqueous solutions.
