Gd1.95Eu0.4M0.01O3 (M = Li+ Na+ K+) nanophosphors have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion (LSC) method. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) measurements were carried out to characterize their structural and luminescent properties. The excitation and emission spectra indicated that the phosphor could be well excited by UV light (243 nm) and emit red light about 612 nm. The effect of alkali co-dopant on PL properties has been examined. The results showed that incorporation of Li+, Na+ and K+ in to Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor would lead to a remarkable increase of photoluminescence. The PL intensity of Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor was improved evidently by co-doping with Li+ ions whose radius is less than that of Gd3+ and hardly with Na+, K+ whose radius is larger than that of Gd3+. The effect of co-dopants on enhanced luminescence was mainly regarded as the result of a suitable local distortion of crystal field surrounding the Eu3+ activator. These results will play an important role in seeking some more effective co-dopants. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

ZnO:Al thin films were prepared on glass and silicon substrates by the sol-gel spin coating method. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that a polycrystalline phase with a hexagonal structure appeared after annealing at 400 degrees C for 1 h. The transmittance increased from 91 to about 93% from pure ZnO films to ZnO film doped with 1 wt% Al and then decreased for 2 wt% Al. The optical band gap energy increased as the doping concentration was increased from 0.5 wt% to 1 wt% Al. The metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) capacitors were fabricated using ZnO films deposited on silicon (100) substrates and electrical properties such as current versus voltage (I-V) and capacitance versus voltage (C-V) characteristics were studied. The electrical resistivity decreased and the leakage current increased with an increase of annealing temperature. The dielectric constant was found to be 3.12 measured at 1 MHz. The dissipation value for the film annealed at 300 degrees C was found to be 3.1 at 5 V. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The electrical transport behavior of n-n indium nitride nanodot-silicon (InN ND-Si) heterostructure Schottky diodes is reported here, which have been fabricated by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. InN ND structures were grown on a 20 nm InN buffer layer on Si substrates. These dots were found to be single crystalline and grown along [0 0 0 1] direction. Temperature-dependent current density-voltage plots (J-V-T) reveal that the ideality factor (eta) and Schottky barrier height (SBH) (Phi(B)) are temperature dependent. The incorrect values of the Richardson constant (A**) produced suggest an inhomogeneous barrier. Descriptions of the experimental results were explained by using two models. First one is barrier height inhomogeneities (BHIs) model, in which considering an effective area of the inhomogeneous contact provided a procedure for a correct determination of A**. The Richardson constant is extracted similar to 110 A cm(-2) K(-2) using the BHI model and that is in very good agreement with the theoretical value of 112 A cm(-2) K(-2). The second model uses Gaussian statistics and by this, mean barrier height Phi(0) and A** were found to be 0.69 eV and 113 A cm(-2) K(-2), respectively.

We report magnetic, dielectric, and magnetodielectric responses of the pure monoclinic bulk phase of partially disordered La2NiMnO6, exhibiting a spectrum of unusual properties and establish that this compound is an intrinsically multiglass system with a large magnetodielectric coupling (8%-20%) over a wide range of temperatures (150-300 K). Specifically, our results establish a unique way to obtain colossal magnetodielectricity, independent of any striction effects, by engineering the asymmetric hopping contribution to the dielectric constant via the tuning of the relative-spin orientations between neighboring magnetic ions in a transition-metal oxide system. We discuss the role of antisite (Ni-Mn) disorder in emergence of these unusual properties.

CaxCu3Ti4O12 (x=0.90, 0.97, 1.0, 1.1 and 1.15) polycrystalline powders with variation in calcium content were prepared via the oxalate precursor route. The structural, morphological and dielectric properties of the ceramics fabricated using these powders were studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope along with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and impedance analyzer. The X-ray diffraction patterns obtained for the x = 0.97, 1.0 and 1.1 powdered ceramics could be indexed to a body-centered cubic perovskite related structure associated with the space group Im3. The ESR studies confirmed the absence of oxygen vacancies in the ceramics that were prepared using the oxalate precursor route. The dielectric properties of these suggest that the calcium deficient sample (x = 0.97) has a reduced dielectric loss while retaining the high dielectric constant which is of significant industrial relevance. A new carbazole-based 90 degrees dipyridyl donor 3,6-di(4-pyridylethynyl)carbazole (L) containing carbazole-ethynyl functionality is synthesized in reasonable yield using the Sonagashira coupling reaction. Multinuclear NMR, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), including single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis characterized this 90 degrees building unit. The stoichiometry combination of L with several Pd(II)/Pt(II)-based 90 degrees acceptors (1a-1d) yielded 2 + 2] self-assembled metallacycles (2a-2d) under mild conditions in quantitative yields 1a = cis-(dppf)Pd(OTf)(2); 1b = cis-(dppf)Pt(OTf)(2); 1c = cis-(tmen)Pd(NO3)(2); 1d = 3,6-bis{trans-Pt(C C) (PEt3)(2)(NO3))carbazole]. All these macrocycles were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, and the molecular structure of 2a was unambiguously determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Incorporation of ethynyl functionality to the carbazole backbone causes the resulted macrocycles (2a-2d) to be pi-electron rich and thereby exhibit strong emission characteristics. The macrocycle 2a has a large internal concave aromatic surface. The fluorescence quenching study suggests that 2a forms a similar to 1:1 complex with C-60 with a high association constant of K-sv = 1.0 X 10(5) M-1.

We present two online algorithms for maintaining a topological order of a directed n-vertex acyclic graph as arcs are added, and detecting a cycle when one is created. Our first algorithm handles m arc additions in O(m(3/2)) time. For sparse graphs (m/n = O(1)), this bound improves the best previous bound by a logarithmic factor, and is tight to within a constant factor among algorithms satisfying a natural locality property. Our second algorithm handles an arbitrary sequence of arc additions in O(n(5/2)) time. For sufficiently dense graphs, this bound improves the best previous bound by a polynomial factor. Our bound may be far from tight: we show that the algorithm can take Omega(n(2)2 root(2lgn)) time by relating its performance to a generalization of the k-levels problem of combinatorial geometry. A completely different algorithm running in Theta (n(2) log n) time was given recently by Bender, Fineman, and Gilbert. We extend both of our algorithms to the maintenance of strong components, without affecting the asymptotic time bounds.

Dielectric dispersion and NMRD experiments have revealed that a significant fraction of water molecules in the hydration shell of various proteins do not exhibit any slowing down of dynamics. This is usually attributed to the presence of the hydrophobic residues (HBR) on the surface, although HBRs alone cannot account for the large amplitude of the fast component. Solvation dynamics experiments and also computer simulation studies, on the other hand, repeatedly observed the presence of a non-negligible slow component. Here we show, by considering three well-known proteins (lysozyme, myoglobin and adelynate kinase), that the fast component arises partly from the response of those water molecules that are hydrogen bonded with the backbone oxygen (BBO) atoms. These are structurally and energetically less stable than those with the side chain oxygen (SCO) atoms. In addition, the electrostatic interaction energy distribution (EIED) of individual water molecules (hydrogen bonded to SCO) with side chain oxygen atoms shows a surprising two peak character with the lower energy peak almost coincident with the energy distribution of water hydrogen bonded to backbone oxygen atoms (BBO). This two peak contribution appears to be quite general as we find it for lysozyme, myoglobin and adenylate kinase (ADK). The sharp peak of EIED at small energy (at less than 2 k(B)T) for the BBO atoms, together with the first peak of EIED of SCO and the HBRs on the protein surface, explain why a large fraction (similar to 80%) of water in the protein hydration layer remains almost as mobile as bulk water Significant slowness arises only from the hydrogen bonds that populate the second peak of EIED at larger energy (at about 4 k(B)T). Thus, if we consider hydrogen bond interaction alone, only 15-20% of water molecules in the protein hydration layer can exhibit slow dynamics, resulting in an average relaxation time of about 5-10 ps. The latter estimate assumes a time constant of 20-100 ps for the slow component. Interestingly, relaxation of water molecules hydrogen bonded to back bone oxygen exhibit an initial component faster than the bulk, suggesting that hydrogen bonding of these water molecules remains frustrated. This explanation of the heterogeneous and non-exponential dynamics of water in the hydration layer is quantitatively consistent with all the available experimental results, and provides unification among diverse features.

A new class of macrobicyclic dinickel(II) complexes Ni2L1,2 B](ClO4)(4) (1-6), where L-1,L-2 are polyaza macrobicyclic binucleating ligands, and B is a N,N-donor heterocyclic base (viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)) are synthesized and characterized. The redox, catalytic, DNA binding and DNA cleavage properties were studied. They exhibit two irreversible waves in the cathodic region around E-pc = -0.95 V and E-pa = -0.85 V vs. Ag/Ag+ in CH3CN-0.1 M TBAP, respectively. The first order rate constants for the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenylphosphate to 4-nitrophenolate by the dinickel(II) complexes 1-6 are in the range from 3.36 x 10(-5) to 10.83 x 10(-5) Ms-1. The complexes 3 and 6 show good binding propensity to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant values (K-b) in the range from 3.08 x 10(5) to 5.37 x 10(5) M-1. The binding site sizes and viscosity data suggest the DNA intercalative and/or groove binding nature of the complexes. The complexes display significant hydrolytic cleavage of supercoiled pBR322DNA at pH 7.2 and 37 degrees C. The hydrolytic cleavage of DNA by the complexes is supported by the evidence from free radical quenching and T4 ligase ligation. The pseudo Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters k(cat) = 5.44 x 10(-2) h(-1) and K-M = 6.23 x 10(-3) M for complex 3 were obtained. Complex 3 also shows an enormous enhancement of the cleavage rate, of 1.5 x 10(6), in comparison to the uncatalysed hydrolysis rate (k = 3.6 x 10(-8) h(-1)) of ds-DNA.

Recent simulations of the stretching of tethered biopolymers at a constant speed v (Ponmurugan and Vemparala, 2011 Phys. Rev. E 84 060101(R)) have suggested that for any time t, the distribution of the fluctuating forces f responsible for chain deformation is governed by a relation of the form P(+ f)/ P(- f) = expgamma f], gamma being a coefficient that is solely a function of v and the temperature T. This result, which is reminiscent of the fluctuation theorems applicable to stochastic trajectories involving thermodynamic variables, is derived in this paper from an analytical calculation based on a generalization of Mazonka and Jarzynski's classic model of dragged particle dynamics Mazonka and Jarzynski, 1999 arXiv:cond-\textbackslashmat/9912121v1]. However, the analytical calculations suggest that the result holds only if t >> 1 and the force fluctuations are driven by white rather than colored noise; they further suggest that the coefficient gamma in the purported theorem varies not as v(0.15)T-(0.7), as indicated by the simulations, but as vT(-1).

Present work presents a code written in the very simple programming language MATLAB, for three dimensional linear elastostatics, using constant boundary elements. The code, in full or in part, is not a translation or a copy of any of the existing codes. Present paper explains how the code is written, and lists all the formulae used. Code is verified by using the code to solve a simple problem which has the well known approximate analytical solution. Of course, present work does not make any contribution to research on boundary elements, in terms of theory. But the work is justified by the fact that, to the best of author’s knowledge, as of now, one cannot find an open access MATLAB code for three dimensional linear elastostatics using constant boundary elements. Author hopes this paper to be of help to beginners who wish to understand how a simple but complete boundary element code works, so that they can build upon and modify the present open access code to solve complex engineering problems quickly and easily. The code is available online for open access (as supplementary file for the present paper), and may be downloaded from the website for the present journal.

A sufficiently long lived warm dark matter could be a source of X-rays observed by satellite based X-ray telescopes. We consider axinos and gravitinos with masses between 1 keV and 100 keV in supersymmetric models with sin all R-parity violation. We show that axino dark matter receives significant constraints from X-ray observations of Chandra and SPI, especially for the lower end of the allowed range of the axino decay constant f(a), while the gravitino dark matter remains unconstrained.

This study deals with tailoring of the surface morphology, microstructure, and electrochemical properties of Sn thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering with different deposition rates. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy are used to characterize the film surface morphology. Electrochemical properties of Sn thin film are measured and compared by cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge cycle data at a constant current density. Sn thin film fabricated with a higher deposition rate exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 798 mAh g(-1) but reduced to 94 mAh g(-1) at 30th cycle. Film deposited with lower deposition rate delivered 770 mAh g(-1) during 1st cycle with improved capacity retention of 521 mAh g(-1) on 30th cycle. Comparison of electrochemical performances of these films has revealed important distinctions, which are associated with the surface morphology and hence on rate of deposition. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. ZnO/Si heterojunctions were fabricated by growing ZnO thin films on p-type Si (100) substrate by pulsed laser deposition without buffer layers. The crystallinity of the heterojunction was analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The optical quality of the film was analyzed by room temperature (RT) photoluminescence measurements. The high intense band to band emission confirmed the high quality of the ZnO thin films on Si. The electrical properties of the junction were studied by temperature dependent current-voltage measurements and RT capacitance-voltage (C-V) analysis. The charge carrier concentration and the barrier height (BH) were calculated, to be 5.6x10(19) cm(-3) and 0.6 eV respectively from the C-V plot. The BH and ideality factor, calculated using the thermionic emission (TE) model, were found to be highly temperature dependent. We observed a much lower value in Richardson constant, 5.19x10(-7)A/cm(2) K-2 than the theoretical value (32 A/cm(2) K-2) for ZnO. This analysis revealed the existence of a Gaussian distribution (GD) with a standard deviation of sigma(2)=0.035 V. By implementing the GD to the TE, the values of BH and Richardson constant were obtained as 1.3 eV and 39.97 A/cm(2) K-2 respectively from the modified Richardson plot. The obtained Richardson constant value is close to the theoretical value for n-ZnO. These high quality heterojunctions can be used for solar cell applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Tin (Sn) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were synthesized by sol-gel spin coating method using zinc acetate di-hydrate and tin chloride di-hydrate as the precursor materials. The films were deposited on glass and silicon substrates and annealed at different temperatures in air ambient. The agglomeration of grains was observed by the addition of Sn in ZnO film with an average grain size of 60 nm. The optical properties of the films were studied using UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer. The optical band gap energies were estimated at different concentrations of Sn. The MOS capacitors were fabricated using Sn doped ZnO films. The capacitance-voltage (C-V), dissipation vs. voltage (D-V) and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were studied and the electrical resistivity and dielectric constant were estimated. The porosity and surface area of the films were increased with the doping of Sn which makes these films suitable for opto-electronic applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
