Turbine inlet pressures of similar to 300 bar in case of CO2 based cycles call for redesigning the cycle in such a way that the optimum high side pressures are restricted to the discharge pressure limits imposed by currently available commercial compressors (similar to 150 bar) for distributed power generation. This leads to a cycle which is a combination of a transcritical condensing and a subcritical cycle with an intercooler and a bifurcation system in it. Using a realistic thermodynamic model, it is predicted that the cycle with the working fluid as a non-flammable mixture of 48.5 % propane and rest CO2 delivers similar to 37.2 % efficiency at 873 K with a high and a low side pressure of 150 and 26 bar respectively. This is in contrast to the best efficiency of similar to 36.1 % offered by a transcritical condensing cycle with the same working fluid at a high side pressure of similar to 300 bar

High pressure Raman spectroscopic studies on perfluorohexane and perfluoroheptane have performed up to 12 GPa. Perfluorohexane under goes two pressure induced transitions: (1) liquid-solid transition at 1.6 GPa and (2) solid-solid transition at 8.2 GPa. On the contrary, perfluoroheptane under goes three phase transitions, they are as follows: (1) liquid-solid transition at 1.3 GPa, (2) intermediate solid I transition at 3 GPa, (3) solid II transition at 7 GPa. The change in slope (d omega/dP) shows that the solid I transition at 3.0 GPa could be the conversion of mid-gauche defect into trans conformers for perfluoroheptane. The pressure induced Raman spectra and the behavior of individual band with pressure shows that the solid phase comprises more than one conformer beyond crystallization. The intensity ratio for both the compounds shows that the high pressure phase beyond 8.2 and 7.0 GPa tends to have close packing with distorted all-trans conformers. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. The reversible transition of wurtzite to rock salt phase under pressure is well reported in literature. The cubic phase is unstable under ambient conditions both in the bulk and in nanoparticles. This paper reports defect-induced stabilization of cubic ZnO phase in sub 20 nm ZnO particles and explores their optical properties. The size reduction was achieved by ball milling in a specially designed mill which allows a control of the milling temperature. The process of synthesis involved both variation of milling temperature (including low temperature similar to 150 K) and impact pressure. We show that these have profound influence in the introduction of defects and stabilization of the cubic phase. A molecular dynamics simulation is presented to explain the observed results. The measured optical properties have further supported the observations of defect-induced stabilization of cubic ZnO and reduction in particle size.

A mutually miscible homopolymer (here polymethyl methacrylate; PMMA) was employed to tailor the interfacial properties of immiscible polycarbonate/styrene acrylonitrile (PC/SAN) blends. In order to design materials that can shield microwave radiation, one of the key properties i.e. electrical conductivity was targeted here using a conducting inclusion; multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Owing to higher polarity, MWNTs prefer PC over SAN which though enhance the electrical conductivity of the blends, they don't improve the interfacial properties and results in poor mechanical properties. Hence, an efficient strategy has been adopted here to simultaneously enhance the mechanical, electrical and microwave attenuation properties. Herein, the MWNTs were wrapped by PMMA via in situ polymerization of MMA (methyl methacrylate). This strategy resulted in the migration of PMMA modified MWNTs towards the blend's interface and resulted in an effective stress transfer across the interface leading to improved mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties. Interestingly, the bulk electrical conductivity of the blends was also enhanced, manifesting the improved dispersion of the MWNTs. The state of dispersion of the MWNTs and the phase morphology were assessed using scanning electron microscopy. The microwave attenuation properties were evaluated using a vector network analyzer (VNA) in the X and K-u-band frequencies. The blends with PMMA wrapped MWNTs manifested a -21 dB of shielding effectiveness which suggests attenuation of more than 99% of the incoming microwave radiation. More interestingly, the attenuation constant could be tuned here employing this unique strategy. This study clearly opens a new tool box in designing materials that show improved mechanical, dynamic mechanical, electrical conductivity and microwave shielding properties.

The potential of textured hydrophobic surfaces to provide substantial drag reduction has been attributed to the presence of air bubbles trapped on the surface cavities. In this paper, we present results on water flow past a textured hydrophobic surface, while systematically varying the absolute pressure close to the surface. Trapped air bubbles on the surface are directly visualized, along with simultaneous pressure drop measurements across the surface in a microchannel configuration. We find that varying the absolute pressure within the channel greatly influences the trapped air bubble behavior, causing a consequent effect on the pressure drop (drag). When the absolute pressure within the channel is maintained below atmospheric pressure, we find that the air bubbles grow in size, merge and eventually detach from the surface. This growth and subsequent merging of the air bubbles leads to a substantial increase in the pressure drop. On the other hand, a pressure above the atmospheric pressure within the channel leads to gradual shrinkage and eventual disappearance of trapped air bubbles. We find that in this case, air bubbles do cause reduction in the pressure drop with the minimum pressure drop (or maximum drag reduction) occurring when the bubbles are flush with the surface. These results show that the trapped air bubble dynamics and the pressure drop across a textured hydrophobic microchannel are very significantly dependent on the absolute pressure within the channel. The results obtained hold important implications toward achieving sustained drag reduction in microfluidic applications.

We report on the resonant frequency modulation of inertial microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) structures due to squeeze film stiffness over a range of working pressures. Squeeze film effects have been studied extensively, but mostly in the context of damping and Q-factor determination of dynamic MEMS structures, typically suspended over a fixed substrate with a very thin air gap. Here, we show with experimental measurements and analytical calculations how the pressure-dependent air springs (squeeze film stiffness) change the resonant frequency of an inertial MEMS structure by as much as five times. For capturing the isolated effect of the squeeze film stiffness, we first determine the static stiffness of our structure with atomic force microscope probing and then study the effect of the air spring by measuring the dynamic response of the structure, thus finding the resonant frequencies while varying the air pressure from 1 to 905 mbar. We also verify our results by analytical and Finite Element Method calculations. Our findings show that the pressure-dependent squeeze film stiffness can affect a rather huge range of frequency modulation (>400%) and, therefore, can be used as a design parameter for exploiting this effect in MEMS devices. 2014-0310]

Peristaltic pumps were normally used to pump liquids in several chemical and biological applications. In the present study, a peristaltic pump was used to pressurize the chamber (positive as well negative pressures) using atmospheric air. In the present paper, we discuss the development and performance study of an automatic pressurization system to calibrate low range (millibar) pressure sensors. The system includes a peristaltic pump, calibrated pressure sensor (master sensor), pressure chamber, and the control electronics. An in-house developed peristaltic pump was used to pressurize the chamber. A closed loop control system has been developed to detect and adjust the pressure leaks in the chamber. The complete system has been integrated into a portable product. The system performance has been studied for a step response and steady state errors. The system is portable, free from oil contaminants, and consumes less power compared to existing pressure calibration systems. The veracity of the system was verified by calibrating an unknown diaphragm based pressure sensor and the results obtained were satisfactory. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

The Nilgiri Block, southern India is an exhumed lower crust formed through arc magmatic processes in the Neoarchean. The main lithologies in this terrane include charnockites, gneisses, volcanic tuff, metasediments, banded iron formation and mafic-ultramafic bodies. Mafic-ultramafic rocks are present towards the northern and central part of the Nilgiri Block. We examine the evolution of these mafic granulites/metagabbros by phase diagram modeling and U-Pb sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) dating. They consist of a garnet-clinopyroxene-plagioclase-hornblende-ilmenite +/- orthopyroxene +/- rutile assemblage. Garnet and clinopyroxene form major constituents with labradorite and orthopyroxene as the main mineral inclusions. Labradorite, identified using Raman analysis, shows typical peaks at 508 cm(-1), 479 cm(-1), 287 cm(-1) and 177 cm(-1). It is stable along with orthopyroxene towards the low-pressure high-temperature region of the granulite fades (M1 stage). Subsequently, orthopyroxene reacted with plagioclase to form the peak garnet + clinopyroxene + rutile assemblage (M2 stage). The final stage is represented by amphibolite facies-hornblende and plagioclase-rim around the garnet-clinopyroxene assemblage (M3 stage). Phase diagram modeling shows that these mafic granulites followed an anticlockwise P-T-t path during their evolution. The initial high-temperature metamorphism (M1 stage) was at 850-900 degrees C and similar to 9 kbar followed by high-pressure granulite fades metamorphism (M2 stage) at 850-900 degrees C and 14-15 kbar. U-Pb isotope studies of zircons using SHRIMP revealed late Neoarchean to early paleoproterozoic ages of crystallization and metamorphism respectively. The age data shows that these mafic granulites have undergone arc magmatism at ca. 25392 +/- 3 Ma and high-temperature, high-pressure metamorphism at ca. 2458.9 +/- 8.6 Ma. Thus our results suggests a late Neoarchean arc magmatism followed by early paleoproterozoic high-temperature, high-pressure granulite facies metamorphism due to the crustal thickening and suturing of the Nilgiri Block onto the Dharwar Craton. The occurrence of high-pressure mafic-ultramafic bodies within major shear zones is one of the indicators of paleo-subduction. In mafic granulites of the Andriamena complex (north-eastern Madagascar) we document unusual textures including garnet-clinopyroxene-quartz coronas that formed after the breakdown of orthopyroxene-plagioclase-ilmenite. Textural evidence and isochemical phase diagram calculations in the Na2O-CaO-K2O-FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O-TiO2 system indicate a pressure-temperature (P-T) evolution from an isothermal (780 degrees C) pressure up to c. 24 kbar to decompression and cooling. Such a P-T trajectory is typically attained in a subduction zone setting where a gabbroic/ultramafic complex is subducted and later exhumed to the present crustal level during oceanic closure and final continental collision. The present results suggest that the presence of such deeply subducted rocks of the Andriamena complex is related to formation of the Betsimisaraka suture. LA-ICPMS U-Pb zircon dating of pelitic gneisses from the Betsimisaraka suture yields low Th/U ratios and protolith ages ranging from 2535 to 2625 Ma. A granitic gneiss from the Alaotra complex yields a zircon crystallization age of ca. 818 Ma and Th/U ratios vary from 1.08 to 2.09. K-Ar dating of muscovite and biotite from biotite-kyanite-sillimanite gneiss and garnet-biotite gneiss yields age of 486 +/- 9 Ma and 459 +/- 9 Ma respectively. We have estimated regional crustal thicknesses in NE Madagascar using a flexural inversion technique, which indicates the presence of an anomalously thick crust (c. 43 km) beneath the Antananarivo block. This result is consistent with the present concept that subduction beneath the Antananarivo block resulted in a more competent and thicker crust. The textural data, thermodynamic model, and geophysical evidence together provide a new insight to the subduction history, crustal thickening and evolution of the high-pressure Andriamena complex and its link to the terminal formation of the Betsimisaraka suture in north-eastern Madagascar. Zn1-xMgxO ( <= x <= 0.1) ceramics were fabricated by conventional solid-state reaction of co-precipitated zinc oxide and magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles. Structural and morphological properties of the fabricated ceramics were studied using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic analysis. The dielectric measurements of the ceramics were carried out as a function of frequency and temperature respectively. Interestingly, Mg doped ZnO (MZO) samples exhibited colossal dielectric response (similar to 1 x 10(4) at 1 kHz) with Debye like relaxation. The detailed dielectric studies and thermal analyses showed that the unusual dielectric response of the samples were originated from the defected grain and grain boundary (GB) conductivity relaxations due to the absorbed atmospheric water vapor (moisture). Impedance spectroscopy was employed to determine the defected grain and GB resistances, capacitances and which supported Maxwell-Wagner type relaxation phenomena. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Instabilities arising in unsteady boundary layers with reverse flow have been investigated experimentally. Experiments are conducted in a piston driven unsteady water tunnel with a shallow angle diffuser placed in the test section. The ratio of temporal (Pi(t)) to spatial (Pi(x)) component of the pressure gradient can be varied by a controlled motion of the piston. In all the experiments, the piston velocity variation with time is trapezoidal consisting of three phases: constant acceleration from rest, constant velocity and constant deceleration to rest. The adverse pressure gradient (and reverse flow) are due to a combination of spatial deceleration of the free stream in the diffuser and temporal deceleration of the free stream caused by the piston deceleration. The instability is usually initiated with the formation of one or more vortices. The onset of reverse flow in the boundary layer, location and time of formation of the first vortex and the subsequent flow evolution are studied for various values of the ratio Pi(x) (Pi(x) + Pi(t)) for the bottom and the top walls. Instability is due to the inflectional velocity profiles of the unsteady boundary layer. The instability is localized and spreads to the other regions at later times. At higher Reynolds numbers growth rate of instability is higher and localized transition to turbulence is observed. Scalings have been proposed for initial vortex formation time and wavelength of the instability vortices. Initial vortex formation time scales with convective time, delta/Delta U, where S is the boundary layer thickness and Delta U is the difference of maximum and minimum velocities in the boundary layer. Non-dimensional vortex formation time based on convective time scale for the bottom and the top walls are found to be 23 and 30 respectively. Wavelength of instability vortices scales with the time averaged boundary layer thickness. (C) 2015 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

In order to enhance the piezoelectric b-phase, PVDF was electrospun from DMF solution. The enhanced b-phase was discerned by comparing the electrospun fibers against the melt mixed samples. While both the processes resulted in phase transformation of a-to electroactive b-polymorph in PVDF, the fraction of b-phase was strongly dependent on the adopted process. Two different nanoscopic particles: carboxyl functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silver (Ag) decorated CNTs were used to further enhance the piezoelectric coefficient in the electrospun fibers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) supports the development of piezoelectric b-phase in PVDF. It was concluded that electrospinning was the best technique for inducing the b-polymorph in PVDF. This was attributed to the high voltage electrostatic field that generates extensional forces on the polymer chains that aligns the dipoles in one direction. The ferroelectric and piezoelectric measurement on electrospun fibers were studied using piezo-response force microscope (PFM). The Ag-CNTs filled PVDF electrospun fibers showed the highest piezoelectric coefficient (d(33) = 54 pm V-1) in contrast to PVDF/CNT fibers (35 pm V-1) and neat PVDF (30 pm V-1). This study demonstrates that the piezoelectric coefficient can be enhanced significantly by electrospinning PVDF containing Ag decorated nanoparticles.

We report on the first dielectric investigation of high-k yttrium copper titanate thin films, which were demonstrated to be very promising for nanoelectronics applications. The dielectric constant of these films is found to vary from 100 down to 24 (at 100 kHz) as a function of deposition conditions, namely oxygen pressure and film thickness. The physical origin of such variation was investigated in the framework of universal dielectric response and Cole-Cole relations and by means of voltage dependence studies of the dielectric constant. Surface-related effects and charge hopping polarization processes, strictly dependent on the film microstructure, are suggested to be mainly responsible for the observed dielectric response. In particular, the bulky behaviour of thick films deposited at lower oxygen pressure evolves towards a more complex and electrically heterogeneous structure when either the thickness decreases down to 50 nm or the films are grown under high oxygen pressure.

This article presents a theoretical analysis of heat and mass transfer in a silica gel + water adsorption process using scaling principles. A two-dimensional columnar packed adsorber domain is chosen for the study, with side and bottom walls cooled and vapour inlet from the top. The adsorption process is initiated from the cold walls with a temperature jump of 15 K, whereas the water vapour supply is maintained at a constant inlet pressure of 1 kPa. The first part of the study is dedicated to deriving relevant scales for the adsorption process by an order of magnitude analysis of energy, continuity and momentum equations. In the latter part, the derived scales are compared with the outcome of numerical studies performed for various domain widths and aspect ratio of bed. A good correlation between scaling and simulation results is observed, thereby validating the scaling approach. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
