Fiber reinforced laminated composite open-section beams are widely used as bearingless rotor flex beams because of their high specific strength and stiffness as well as fatigue life. These laminated composite structures exhibit a number of different failure modes, including fiber-matrix debonding within individual layers, delamination or separation of the layers, transverse cracks through one or more layers and fiber fracture. Delamination is a predominant failure mode in continuous fiber reinforced laminated composites and often initiate near the free edges of the structure. The appearance of delaminations in the composite rotorcraft flexbeams can lead to deterioration of the mechanical properties and, in turn, the helicopter performance as well as safety. Understanding and predicting the influence of free-edge delamination on the overall behavior of the laminates will provide quantitative measures of the extent of the damage and help ensure their damage tolerance.

A Monte Carlo filter, based on the idea of averaging over characteristics and fashioned after a particle-based time-discretized approximation to the Kushner-Stratonovich (KS) nonlinear filtering equation, is proposed. A key aspect of the new filter is the gain-like additive update, designed to approximate the innovation integral in the KS equation and implemented through an annealing-type iterative procedure, which is aimed at rendering the innovation (observation prediction mismatch) for a given time-step to a zero-mean Brownian increment corresponding to the measurement noise. This may be contrasted with the weight-based multiplicative updates in most particle filters that are known to precipitate the numerical problem of weight collapse within a finite-ensemble setting. A study to estimate the a-priori error bounds in the proposed scheme is undertaken. The numerical evidence, presently gathered from the assessed performance of the proposed and a few other competing filters on a class of nonlinear dynamic system identification and target tracking problems, is suggestive of the remarkably improved convergence and accuracy of the new filter. ZnS quantum dots (QDs) of different sizes are synthesized by a simple chemical co-precipitation method at room temperature, by varying pH value of the reaction mixture. Samples are characterized by an X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, etc. Linear optical properties, including UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence emission characteristics, of as-prepared QDs are measured. Size dependent nonlinear optical property, such as second harmonic generation (SHG) of 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser fundamental radiation in the synthesized ZnS QDs, is reported for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, by using the standard Kurtz-Perry powder method. In not to study the possibility of the synthesized ZnS QDs in different device applications ZnS/PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) nanocomposites are also synthesized. The presence of weak chemical interaction between the polymer matrix and ZnS QDs is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal properties of the nanocomposites are studied by differential scanning calorimetry and thermo-gravimetric analysis techniques, which show that the composites are stable up to similar to 300 degrees C temperature. The present study demonstrates the use of few-layer borocarbonitride nanosheets synthesized by a simple method as non-platinum cathode catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline medium. Composition-dependent ORR activity is observed and the best performance was found when the composition was carbon-rich. Mechanistic aspects reveal that ORR follows the 4e(-) pathway with kinetic parameters comparable to those of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Excellent methanol tolerance is observed with the BCN nanosheets unlike with Pt/C.

Overland rain retrieval using spaceborne microwave radiometer offers a myriad of complications as land presents itself as a radiometrically warm and highly variable background. Hence, land rainfall algorithms of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) have traditionally incorporated empirical relations of microwave brightness temperature (Tb) with rain rate, rather than relying on physically based radiative transfer modeling of rainfall (as implemented in the TMI ocean algorithm). In this paper, sensitivity analysis is conducted using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient as benchmark, to estimate the best combination of TMI low-frequency channels that are highly sensitive to the near surface rainfall rate from the TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR). Results indicate that the TMI channel combinations not only contain information about rainfall wherein liquid water drops are the dominant hydrometeors but also aid in surface noise reduction over a predominantly vegetative land surface background. Furthermore, the variations of rainfall signature in these channel combinations are not understood properly due to their inherent uncertainties and highly nonlinear relationship with rainfall. Copula theory is a powerful tool to characterize the dependence between complex hydrological variables as well as aid in uncertainty modeling by ensemble generation. Hence, this paper proposes a regional model using Archimedean copulas, to study the dependence of TMI channel combinations with respect to precipitation, over the land regions of Mahanadi basin, India, using version 7 orbital data from the passive and active sensors on board TRMM, namely, TMI and PR. Studies conducted for different rainfall regimes over the study area show the suitability of Clayton and Gumbel copulas for modeling convective and stratiform rainfall types for the majority of the intraseasonal months. Furthermore, large ensembles of TMI Tb (from the most sensitive TMI channel combination) were generated conditional on various quantiles (25th, 50th, 75th, and 95th) of the convective and the stratiform rainfall. Comparatively greater ambiguity was observed to model extreme values of the convective rain type. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed model was tested by comparing the results with traditionally employed linear and quadratic models. Results reveal the superior performance of the proposed copula-based technique.

We report a simple hydrothermal synthesis of highly reproducible carbon nanoparticles in a size range between 2 and 7 nmfroma single precursor sucrose without either surface passivating agents or acids and bases. The carbon nanoparticles can be used as white light phosphors, especially for ultraviolet light emitting diodes and metal-free catalyst for the reduction of nitrophenol.

To investigate the dynamics of gravity waves in stratified Boussinesq flows, a model is derived that consists of all three-gravity-wave-mode interactions (the GGG model), excluding interactions involving the vortical mode. The GGG model is a natural extension of weak turbulence theory that accounts for exact three-gravity-wave resonances. The model is examined numerically by means of random, large-scale, high-frequency forcing. An immediate observation is a robust growth of the so-called vertically sheared horizontal flow (VSHF). In addition, there is a forward transfer of energy and equilibration of the nonzero-frequency (sometimes called ``fast'') gravity-wave modes. These results show that gravity-wave-mode interactions by themselves are capable of systematic interscale energy transfer in a stratified fluid. Comparing numerical simulations of the GGG model and the full Boussinesq system, for the range of Froude numbers (Fr) considered (0.05 a parts per thousand currency sign Fr a parts per thousand currency sign 1), in both systems the VSHF is hardest to resolve. When adequately resolved, VSHF growth is more vigorous in the GGG model. Furthermore, a VSHF is observed to form in milder stratification scenarios in the GGG model than the full Boussinesq system. Finally, fully three-dimensional nonzero-frequency gravity-wave modes equilibrate in both systems and their scaling with vertical wavenumber follows similar power-laws. The slopes of the power-laws obtained depend on Fr and approach -2 (from above) at Fr = 0.05, which is the strongest stratification that can be properly resolved with our computational resources.

Lattice reduction (LR) aided detection algorithms are known to achieve the same diversity order as that of maximum-likelihood (ML) detection at low complexity. However, they suffer SNR loss compared to ML performance. The SNR loss is mainly due to imperfect orthogonalization and imperfect nearest neighbor quantization. In this paper, we propose an improved LR-aided (ILR) detection algorithm, where we specifically target to reduce the effects of both imperfect orthogonalization and imperfect nearest neighbor quantization. The proposed ILR detection algorithm is shown to achieve near-ML performance in large-MIMO systems and outperform other LR-aided detection algorithms in the literature. Specifically, the SNR loss incurred by the proposed ILR algorithm compared to ML performance is just 0.1 dB for 4-QAM and < 0.5 dB for 16-QAM in 16 x 16 V-BLAST MIMO system. This performance is superior compared to those of other LR-aided detection algorithms, whose SNR losses are in the 2 dB to 9 dB range.

The problem of time variant reliability analysis of randomly parametered and randomly driven nonlinear vibrating systems is considered. The study combines two Monte Carlo variance reduction strategies into a single framework to tackle the problem. The first of these strategies is based on the application of the Girsanov transformation to account for the randomness in dynamic excitations, and the second approach is fashioned after the subset simulation method to deal with randomness in system parameters. Illustrative examples include study of single/multi degree of freedom linear/non-linear inelastic randomly parametered building frame models driven by stationary/non-stationary, white/filtered white noise support acceleration. The estimated reliability measures are demonstrated to compare well with results from direct Monte Carlo simulations. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aldimines react with reducing agents, such as Grignards, phenylsilane or zinc in the presence of titanium(IV) isopropoxide to form amines and reductively coupled imines (diamines). Using deuterium labeled reagents, the mechanism of reduction to form amines is described. Reducing agents, such as the Grignard and zinc result in the formation of low valent titanium (LVT), which in turn reduces the imine. On the other hand, phenylsilane reacts by a distinctly different mechanism and where a hydrogen atom from silicon is directly transferred to the titanium coordinated imine. (c) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. We incorporated tin oxide nanostructures into the graphene nanosheet matrix and observed that the phase of tin oxide varies with the morphology. The highest discharge capacity and coulumbic efficiency were obtained for SnO phase of nanoplates morphology. Platelet morphology of tin oxide shows more reversible capacity than the nanoparticle (SnO2 phase) tin oxide. The first discharge capacity obtained for SnO@GNS is 1393 and 950 mAh/g for SnO2@GNS electrode at a current density of 23 mu A/cm(2). A stable capacity of about 1022 and 715 mAh/g was achieved at a current rate of 23 mu A/cm(2) after 40 cycles for SnO@GNS and SnO2@GNS anodes, respectively. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. We present a comparative study of the temperature dependent magnetic properties and electron paramagnetic resonance parameters of nano and bulk samples of Bi0.2Sr0.8MnO3 (BSMO). Bulk BSMO is known to have a high T-N similar to 260K and robust charge ordering (T-CO similar to 360 K). We confirm that the bulk sample shows an antiferromagnetic transition around similar to 260K and a spin-glass transition similar to 40 K. For the nano sample, we see a clear ferromagnetic transition at around similar to 120 K. We conclude that spin glass state, which is present due to the co-existence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states in the bulk sample, is suppressed in the nano sample and ferromagnetism is induced instead. Complex biological systems such as the human brain can be expected to be inherently nonlinear and hence difficult to model. Most of the previous studies on investigations of brain function have either used linear models or parametric nonlinear models. In this paper, we propose a novel application of a nonlinear measure of phase synchronization based on recurrences, correlation between probabilities of recurrence (CPR), to study seizures in the brain. The advantage of this nonparametric method is that it makes very few assumptions thus making it possible to investigate brain functioning in a data-driven way. We have demonstrated the utility of CPR measure for the study of phase synchronization in multichannel seizure EEG recorded from patients with global as well as focal epilepsy. For the case of global epilepsy, brain synchronization using thresholded CPR matrix of multichannel EEG signals showed clear differences in results obtained for epileptic seizure and pre-seizure. Brain headmaps obtained for seizure and preseizure cases provide meaningful insights about synchronization in the brain in those states. The headmap in the case of focal epilepsy clearly enables us to identify the focus of the epilepsy which provides certain diagnostic value. Comparative studies with linear correlation have shown that the nonlinear measure CPR outperforms the linear correlation measure. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A variety of aliphatic and aromatic ketoaldehydes were reduced to the corresponding ketoalcohols with a mixture of sodium borohydride (1.2 equivalents) and sodium carbonate (sixfold molar excess) in water. Reactions were performed at room temperatures over (typically) 2 h, and yields of isolated products generally ranged from 70% to 85%. A biscarbonate-borane complex, (BH3)(2)CO2](2-) 2Na(+), possibly formed from the reagent mixture, is likely the active reductant. The moderated reactivity of this acylborane species would explain the chemoselectivity observed in the reactions. The readily available reagents and the mild aqueous conditions make for ease of operation and environmental compatibility, and make a useful addition to available methodology.

The role of elastic Taylor-Couette flow instabilities in the dynamic nonlinear viscoelastic response of an entangled wormlike micellar fluid is studied by large-amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) rheology and in situ polarized light scattering over a wide range of strain and angular frequency values, both above and below the linear crossover point. Well inside the nonlinear regime, higher harmonic decomposition of the resulting stress signal reveals that the normalized third harmonic I-3/I-1 shows a power-law behavior with strain amplitude. In addition, I-3/I-1 and the elastic component of stress amplitude sigma(E)(0) show a very prominent maximum at the strain value where the number density (n(v)) of the Taylor vortices is maximum. A subsequent increase in applied strain (gamma) results in the distortions of the vortices and a concomitant decrease in n(v), accompanied by a sharp drop in I-3 and sigma(E)(0). The peak position of the spatial correlation function of the scattered intensity along the vorticity direction also captures the crossover. Lissajous plots indicate an intracycle strain hardening for the values of gamma corresponding to the peak of I-3, similar to that observed for hard-sphere glasses.
