We generalize the Nozieres-Schmitt-Rink method to study the repulsive Fermi gas in the absence of molecule formation, i.e., in the so-called ``upper branch.'' We find that the system remains stable except close to resonance at sufficiently low temperatures. With increasing scattering length, the energy density of the system attains a maximum at a positive scattering length before resonance. This is shown to arise from Pauli blocking which causes the bound states of fermion pairs of different momenta to disappear at different scattering lengths. At the point of maximum energy, the compressibility of the system is substantially reduced, leading to a sizable uniform density core in a trapped gas. The change in spin susceptibility with increasing scattering length is moderate and does not indicate any magnetic instability. These features should also manifest in Fermi gases with unequal masses and/or spin populations.

When radiation of sufficiently high energy is incident on the surface of a semiconductor photocathode, electrons are excited from the valence band to the conduction band and these may contribute to the photocurrent. The photocurrent in a single-layer cathode is found to be small, because of collisions within the cathode material, the electron affinity condition, etc. It is observed that when a thin layer of n-type cesium antimonide (Cs3Sb) is deposited over a p-type layer of sodium potassium antimonide (Na2KSb), there occurs a sharp rise in the photocurrent. The causes for the dramatic increase in the photocurrent obtainable from a sodium potassium antimonide cathode, by depositing a thin layer of cesium antimonide are analyzed in this article. It has been shown that the interface between sodium potassium antimonide and cesium antimonide can result in lowering of the electron affinity to a level below the bottom of the conduction band of sodium potassium antimonide. The drift field that arises at the heterointerface enables the electrons to reach the surface, leading to the emission of almost all the photogenerated electrons within the cathode. The processes involved in photoemission from such a double-layer cathode are examined from a theoretical point of view. The spectral response of the two-layer cathode is also found to be better than that of a single-layer cathode.

Temperature dependence of the energy gap and free carrier absorption in a high-quality InAs0.05Sb0.95 single crystal was studied between 90 K and 430 K through the absorption spectra. At this alloy concentration, the room-temperature energy gap was measured to be 0.15 eV. Varshni- and the Bose–Einstein-type fit parameters were obtained from the measured temperature dependence of the energy gap, and the latter gave the zero-temperature gap to be 0.214 eV. It was found that although Weider’s empirical formula for the dependence of the energy gap on temperature and the alloy concentration agrees with the value of the gap at room temperature, it is inaccurate in describing its temperature dependence. From the free carrier absorption measurements, the phonon limited cross section of 7.35×10−16 cm2 at 15 μm was deduced at room temperature.

Antiferroelectric materials (example: lead zirconate and modified lead zirconate stannate), in which a field-induced ferroelectric phase transition is feasible due to a small free energy difference between the ferroelectric and the antiferroelectric phases, are proven to be very good candidates for applications involving actuation and high charge storage devices. The property of reverse switching from the field-induced ferroelectric to antiferroelectric phases is studied as a function of temperature, applied electric field, and sample thickness in antiferroelectric lead zirconate thin films deposited by pulsed excimer laser ablation. The maximum released charge density was 22 μC/cm2 from a stored charge density of 36 μC/cm2 in a 0.55 μ thick lead zirconate thin film. This indicated that more than 60% of the stored charge could be released in less than 7 ns at room temperature for a field of 200 kV/cm. The content of net released charge was found to increase with increasing field strength, whereas with increasing temperature the released charge was found to decrease. Thickness-dependent studies on lead zirconate thin films showed that size effects relating to extrinsic and intrinsic pinning mechanisms controlled the released and induced charges through the intrinsic switching time. These results proved that antiferroelectric PZ thin films could be utilized in high-speed charge decoupling capacitors in microelectronics applications.

Energy Harvesting (EH) nodes, which harvest energy from the environment in order to communicate over a wireless link, promise perpetual operation of a wireless network with battery-powered nodes. In this paper, we address the throughput optimization problem for a rate-adaptive EH node that chooses its rate from a set of discrete rates and adjusts its power depending on its channel gain and battery state. First, we show that the optimal throughput of an EH node is upper bounded by the throughput achievable by a node that is subject only to an average power constraint. We then propose a simple transmission scheme for an EH node that achieves an average throughput close to the upper bound. The scheme's parameters can be made to account for energy overheads such as battery non-idealities and the energy required for sensing and processing. The effect of these overheads on the average throughput is also analytically characterized.

A deep‐level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) technique is reported for determining the capture cross‐section activation energy directly. Conventionally, the capture activation energy is obtained from the temperature dependence of the capture cross section. Capture cross‐section measurement is often very doubtful due to many intrinsic errors and is more critical for nonexponential capture kinetics. The essence of this technique is to use an emission pulse to allow the defects to emit electrons and the transient signal from capture process due to a large capture barrier was analyzed, in contrast with the emission signal in conventional DLTS. This technique has been applied for determining the capture barrier for silicon‐related DX centers in AlxGa1−xAs for different AlAs mole fractions.

The compositional evolution in sputter deposited LiCoO2 thin films is influenced by process parameters involved during deposition. The electrochemical performance of these films strongly depends on their microstructure, preferential orientation and stoichiometry. The transport process of sputtered Li and Co atoms from the LiCoO2 target to the substrate, through Ar plasma in a planar magnetron configuration, was investigated based on the Monte Carlo technique. The effect of sputtering gas pressure and the substrate-target distance (dst) on Li/Co ratio, as well as, energy and angular distribution of sputtered atoms on the substrate were examined. Stable Li/Co ratios have been obtained at 5 Pa pressure and dst in the range 5−11 cm. The kinetic energy and incident angular distribution of Li and Co atoms reaching the substrate have been found to be dependent on sputtering pressure. Simulations were extended to predict compositional variations in films prepared at various process conditions. These results were compared with the composition of films determined experimentally using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Li/Co ratio calculated using XPS was in moderate agreement with that of the simulated value. The measured film thickness followed the same trend as predicted by simulation. These studies are shown to be useful in understanding the complexities in multicomponent sputtering.

We study a sensor node with an energy harvesting source. The generated energy can be stored in a buffer. The sensor node periodically senses a random field and generates a packet. These packets are stored in a queue and transmitted using the energy available at that time. We obtain energy management policies that are throughput optimal, i.e., the data queue stays stable for the largest possible data rate. Next we obtain energy management policies which minimize the mean delay in the queue. We also compare performance of several easily implementable sub-optimal energy management policies. A greedy policy is identified which, in low SNR regime, is throughput optimal and also minimizes mean delay.

Thin films of Ti62.5Si37.5 composition were deposited by the pulsed-laser ablation technique on single-crystal Nad substrates at room temperature and on ′single-crystal′ superalloy substrates at elevated temperatures. Both vapour and liquid droplets generated by pulsed-laser ablation of the target become quenched on the substrate. Amorphization had taken place in the process of quenching of vapour-plasma as well as small liquid droplets on NaCl substrates at room temperature. In addition to the formation of Ti5Si3, a metastable fcc phase (a 0 = 0.433 nm) also forms in micron-sized large droplets as well as in the medium-sized submicron droplets. The same metastable fcc phase nucleates during deposition from the vapour state at 500°C and at 600°C on a superalloy substrate as well as during crystallization of the amorphous phase. The evolution of the metastable fcc phase in the Ti-Si system during non-equilibrium processing is reported for the first time.

There are several ways of storing electrical energy in chemical and physical forms and retrieving it on demand, and ultracapacitors are one among them. This article presents the taxonomy of ultracapacitor and describes various types of rechargeable-battery electrodes that can be used to realize the hybrid ultracapacitors in conjunction with a high-surface-area-graphitic-carbon electrode. While the electrical energy is stored in a battery electrode in chemical form, it is stored in physical form as charge in the electrical double-layer formed between the electrolyte and the high-surface-area-carbon electrodes. This article discusses various types of hybrid ultracapacitors along with the possible applications.

Energy use in developing countries is heterogeneous across households. Present day global energy models are mostly too aggregate to account for this heterogeneity. Here, a bottom-up model for residential energy use that starts from key dynamic concepts on energy use in developing countries is presented and applied to India. Energy use and fuel choice is determined for five end-use functions (cooking, water heating, space heating, lighting and appliances) and for five different income quintiles in rural and urban areas. The paper specifically explores the consequences of different assumptions for income distribution and rural electrification on residential sector energy use and CO(2) emissions, finding that results are clearly sensitive to variations in these parameters. As a result of population and economic growth, total Indian residential energy use is expected to increase by around 65-75% in 2050 compared to 2005, but residential carbon emissions may increase by up to 9-10 times the 2005 level. While a more equal income distribution and rural electrification enhance the transition to commercial fuels and reduce poverty, there is a trade-off in terms of higher CO(2) emissions via increased electricity use. Expanding energy access to the rural population of India presents a critical challenge for its government. The presence of 364 million people without access to electricity and 726 million who rely on biomass for cooking indicate both the failure of past policies and programs, and the need for a radical redesign of the current system. We propose an integrated implementation framework with recommendations for adopting business principles with innovative institutional, regulatory, financing and delivery mechanisms. The framework entails establishment of rural energy access authorities and energy access funds, both at the national and regional levels, to be empowered with enabling regulatory policies, capital resources and the support of multi-stakeholder partnership. These institutions are expected to design, lead, manage and monitor the rural energy interventions. At the other end, trained entrepreneurs would be expected to establish bioenergy-based micro-enterprises that will produce and distribute energy carriers to rural households at an affordable cost. The ESCOs will function as intermediaries between these enterprises and the international carbon market both in aggregating carbon credits and in trading them under CDM. If implemented, such a program could address the challenges of rural energy empowerment by creating access to modern energy carriers and climate change mitigation. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) influence climate by suppressing canopy transpiration in addition to its well- known greenhouse gas effect. The decrease in plant transpiration is due to changes in plant physiology (reduced opening of plant stomata). Here, we quantify such changes in water flux for various levels of CO(2) concentrations using the National Center for Atmospheric Research's (NCAR) Community Land Model. We find that photosynthesis saturates after 800 ppmv (parts per million, by volume) in this model. However, unlike photosynthesis, canopy transpiration continues to decline at about 5.1% per 100 ppmv increase in CO(2) levels. We also find that the associated reduction in latent heat flux is primarily compensated by increased sensible heat flux. The continued decline in canopy transpiration and subsequent increase in sensible heat flux at elevated CO(2) levels implies that incremental warming associated with the physiological effect of CO(2) will not abate at higher CO(2) concentrations, indicating important consequences for the global water and carbon cycles from anthropogenic CO(2) emissions.
