Optimal switching angles for minimization of total harmonic distortion of line current (I-THD) in a voltage source inverter are determined traditionally by imposing half-wave symmetry (HWS) and quarter-wave symmetry (QWS) conditions on the pulse width modulated waveform. This paper investigates optimal switching angles with QWS relaxed. Relaxing QWS expands the solution space and presents the possibility of improved solutions. The optimal solutions without QWS are shown here to outperform the optimal solutions with QWS over a range of modulation index (M) between 0.82 and 0.94 for a switching frequency to fundamental frequency ratio of 5. Theoretical and experimental results are presented on a 2.3kW induction motor drive.

Two hydroxycinnamic acids viz., p-coumaric, and caffeic acids have been extracted and purified from Parthenium hysterophorus, subsequently characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR, single crystal X-ray crystallography. The optimized structures of these acids were calculated in terms of density functional theory by Gaussian 09. The validation of experimental and theoretically obtained data for structural parameters such as bond lengths and bond angles has have been carried out to analyze the statistical significance by curve fitting analysis and the values of correlation coefficient found to be 0.985, 0.992, and 0.984, 0.975 in p-coumaric, and caffeic acids, respectively. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies show the eventual charge transfer interaction within the molecule. Thermal studies were also carried out by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTA), and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of the perovskite compound Pr1-xYxMnO3 (0.1 <= x <= 0.4) studied using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, neutron powder diffraction, and dielectric techniques. These compounds crystallize in orthorhombic space group (Pnma) in the temperature range 5-300 K. The Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases with the Y substitution along with an increase in the Jahn-Teller distortion. The Jahn-Teller distortion for Pr0.9Y0.1MnO3 shows an anomalous change near 50 K, below which it falls sharply. Neutron powder diffraction patterns of all reported compositions at low temperature constitute additional magnetic Bragg peaks that suggest magnetic ordering. Magnetic reflections were indexed in the nuclear lattice with the propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0). Rietveld refinement of powder patterns conform to A type antiferromagnetic ordering where moments are aligned ferromagnetically in a-c plane and coupled nearly antiferromagnetically along b-axis resulting in a net ferromagnetic component along the b-direction. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature was deduced from dc magnetization and ac susceptibility data. The transition temperature decreases by nearly 22 K (from 81 K to 59 K) as yttrium content (x) increases from 0.1 to 0.4. Measurements reveal strong frequency dispersion in dielectric constant and dielectric loss. Activation energy and relaxation time are estimated from the Arrhenius plot. It is further shown that relaxation behaviour is altered with yttrium doping concentration. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

A self-consistent mode coupling theory (MCT) with microscopic inputs of equilibrium pair correlation functions is developed to analyze electrolyte dynamics. We apply the theory to calculate concentration dependence of (i) time dependent ion diffusion, (ii) intermediate scattering function of the constituent ions, and (iii) ion solvation dynamics in electrolyte solution. Brownian dynamics with implicit water molecules and molecular dynamics method with explicit water are used to check the theoretical predictions. The time dependence of ionic self-diffusion coefficient and the corresponding intermediate scattering function evaluated from our MCT approach show quantitative agreement with early experimental and present Brownian dynamic simulation results. With increasing concentration, the dispersion of electrolyte friction is found to occur at increasingly higher frequency, due to the faster relaxation of the ion atmosphere. The wave number dependence of intermediate scattering function, F(k, t), exhibits markedly different relaxation dynamics at different length scales. At small wave numbers, we find the emergence of a step-like relaxation, indicating the presence of both fast and slow time scales in the system. Such behavior allows an intriguing analogy with temperature dependent relaxation dynamics of supercooled liquids. We find that solvation dynamics of a tagged ion exhibits a power law decay at long times-the decay can also be fitted to a stretched exponential form. The emergence of the power law in solvation dynamics has been tested by carrying out long Brownian dynamics simulations with varying ionic concentrations. The solvation time correlation and ion-ion intermediate scattering function indeed exhibit highly interesting, non-trivial dynamical behavior at intermediate to longer times that require further experimental and theoretical studies. In this discussion, we show that a static definition of a `bond' is not viable by looking at a few examples for both inter-and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding. This follows from our earlier work (Goswami and Arunan, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2009, 11, 8974) which showed a practical way to differentiate `hydrogen bonding' from `van der Waals interaction'. We report results from ab initio and atoms in molecules theoretical calculations for a series of Rg center dot center dot center dot HX complexes (Rg = He/Ne/Ar and X = F/Cl/Br) and ethane-1,2-diol. Results for the Rg center dot center dot center dot HX/DX complexes show that Rg center dot center dot center dot DX could have a `deuterium bond' even when Rg center dot center dot center dot HX is not `hydrogen bonded', according to the practical criterion given by Goswami and Arunan. Results for ethane-1,2-diol show that an `intra-molecular hydrogen bond' can appear during a normal mode vibration which is dominated by the O center dot center dot center dot O stretching, though a `bond' is not found in the equilibrium structure. This dynamical `bond' formation may nevertheless be important in ensuring the continuity of electron density across a molecule. In the former case, a vibration `breaks' an existing bond and in the later case, a vibration leads to `bond' formation. In both cases, the molecule/complex stays bound irrespective of what happens to this `hydrogen bond'. Both these cases push the borders on the recent IUPAC recommendation on hydrogen bonding (Arunan et al. Pure. Appl. Chem. 2011, 83 1637) and justify the inclusive nature of the definition.

Temperature-dependent Raman and dielectric measurements have been carried out on (C2H5NH3)(2)CdCl4 single crystals. Raman studies reveal the presence of two structural phase transitions below room temperature at 216 K and 114 K. The phase transitions are marked by anomalies in temperature dependence of wave-number and full width half maximum (FWHM) of several vibrational modes. The transitions are also accompanied by anomalies in dielectric measurements. Raman and dielectric data indicate that the transition at 216 K is order-disorder in nature and is driven by re-orientation of organic ions, while the transition at 114 K is due to coupling between the CdCl6 octahedron and the organic chain. Further high temperature dielectric measurements reveal the presence of one more structural phase transition around 473 K across which dispersion in dielectric parameters is observed. The activation energies and relaxation time obtained for high temperature dielectric phases are characteristic of combined reorientation motions of alkyl ammonium cations.

NMR relaxation rates (1/T-1), magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity studies in doped poly-3-methylthiophene are reported in this paper. The magnetic susceptibility data show the contributions from both Pauli and Curie spins, with the size of the Pauli term depending strongly on the doping level. Proton and fluorine NMR relaxation rates have been studied as a function of temperature (3-300 K) and field (for protons at 0.9, 9.0, 16.4, and 23.4 T, and for fluorine at 9.0 T). The temperature dependence of T-1 is classified into three regimes: (a) For T < (g mu(B) B/2k(B)), the relaxation mechanism follows a modified Korringa relation due to electron-electron interactions and disorder. H-1-T-1 is due to the electron-nuclear dipolar interaction in addition to the contact term. (b) For the intermediate temperature range (g mu(B) B/2k(B)) < T < T-BPP (the temperature where the contribution from the reorientation motion to the T-1 is insignificant) the relaxation mechanism is via spin diffusion to the paramagnetic centers. (c) In the high-temperature regime and at low Larmor frequency the relaxation follows the modified Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound model. T-1 data analysis has been carried out in light of these models depending upon the temperature and frequency range of study. Fluorine relaxation data have been analyzed and attributed to the PF6 reorientation. The cross relaxation among the H-1 and F-19 nuclei has been observed in the entire temperature range suggesting the role of magnetic dipolar interaction modulated by the reorientation of the symmetric molecular subgroups. The data analysis shows that the enhancement in the Korringa ratio is greater in a less conducting sample. Intra-and interchain hopping of charge carriers is found to be a dominant relaxation mechanism at low temperature. Frequency dependence of T-1(-1) on temperature shows that at low temperature T < (g mu(B) B/2k(B))] the system shows three dimensions and changes to quasi one dimension at high temperature. Moreover, a good correlation between electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, and NMR T-1 data has been observed.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are completely miscible below 50 wt % PVDF in the blends. In this work, an attempt was made to understand the fragility/cooperativity relation in glass-forming and crystalline blends of PVDF/PMMA and in the presence of a heteronucleating agent, multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Hence, three representative blends were chosen: a completely amorphous (10/90 by wt, PVDF/PMMA), on the verge of amorphous miscibility (50/50 by wt, PVDF/PMMA), and crystalline (60/40 by wt, PVDF/PMMA) blends. The intermolecular cooperativity/coupling, fragility, and configurational entropy near the glass transition temperature (T-g) were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). It was observed that the blends with higher concentration of PMMA were more fragile (fragility index m = 141) and those with higher concentration of PVDF were more strong (m = 78). Interestingly, the coupling was less in the glass-forming blends (10/90 by wt, PVDF/PMMA) than the crystalline blends as manifested from DRS. This observation was also supported by DSC measurements which reflected that the cooperative rearranging region (CRR) existed over a smaller length scales in fragile blends as compared to strong blends, possibly due to restricted amorphous mobility. This effect was more prominent in the presence of CNTs, in particular for 50/50 (by wt) and 60/40 (by wt) PVDF/PMMA blends. Further, the configurational entropy, as manifested from DRS, decreased significantly in the strong blends in striking contrast to the fragile blends, supported by DSC, which manifested in an increase in the volume of cooperativity in the strong blends. The higher coupling in the crystalline blends can be attributed to good packing of the amorphous regions. While this is understood for crystalline blends (60/40 by wt, PVDF/PMMA), it is envisaged that enhanced dynamic heterogeneity is accountable for increased coupling in the case of blends which are on the verge of amorphous miscibility (50/50 by wt, PVDF/PMMA). The latter is also supported by broad relaxations near the T-g in DRS. Interestingly, the intermolecular coupling in the blends in the presence of CNTs has reduced, though the potential energy barrier hindering the rearrangement of CRR is lower than the blends without CNTs. In addition, the amorphous packing is not as effective as the blends without CNTs. This is manifested from reduced volume of cooperativity in particular, for 50/50 (by wt) and 60/40 (by wt) blends.

Current paper reports synthesis of chemical free graphene by unzipping of the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using high strain rate deformation at 150K. A specially designed cryomill operating at 150 K was used for the experiments. The mechanism of unzipping was further explored using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Both experimental and simulation results reveal two modes of unzipping through radial and shear loading. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this article, we have presented ultrafast charge transfer dynamics through halogen bonds following vertical ionization of representative halogen bonded clusters. Subsequent hole directed reactivity of the radical cations of halogen bonded clusters is also discussed. Furthermore, we have examined effect of the halogen bond strength on the electron-electron correlation-and relaxation-driven charge migration in halogen bonded complexes. For this study, we have selected A-Cl (A represents F, OH, CN, NH2, CF3, and COOH substituents) molecules paired with NH3 (referred as ACl:NH3 complex): these complexes exhibit halogen bonds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on purely electron correlation-and relaxation-driven ultrafast (attosecond) charge migration dynamics through halogen bonds. Both density functional theory and complete active space self-consistent field theory with 6-31+G(d, p) basis set are employed for this work. Upon vertical ionization of NCCl center dot center dot center dot NH3 complex, the hole is predicted to migrate from the NH3-end to the ClCN-end of the NCCl center dot center dot center dot NH3 complex in approximately 0.5 fs on the D-0 cationic surface. This hole migration leads to structural rearrangement of the halogen bonded complex, yielding hydrogen bonding interaction stronger than the halogen bonding interaction on the same cationic surface. Other halogen bonded complexes, such as H2NCl:NH3, F3CCl:NH3, and HOOCCl:NH3, exhibit similar charge migration following vertical ionization. On the contrary, FCl:NH3 and HOCl:NH3 complexes do not exhibit any charge migration following vertical ionization to the D-0 cation state, pointing to interesting halogen bond strength-dependent charge migration. Discovering new drugs to treat tuberculosis more efficiently and to overcome multidrug resistance is a world health priority. To find novel antitubercular agents several approaches have been used in various institutions worldwide, including target-based approaches against several validated mycobacterial enzymes and phenotypic screens. We screened more than 17,000 compounds from Vichem's Nested Chemical Library(TM) using an integrated strategy involving whole cell-based assays with Corynebacterium glutamicum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and target-based assays with protein kinases PknA, PknB and PknG as well as other targets such as PimA and bacterial topoisomerases simultaneously. With the help of the target-based approach we have found very potent hits inhibiting the selected target enzymes, but good minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) against M. tuberculosis were not achieved. Focussing on the whole cell-based approach several potent hits were found which displayed minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) against M. tuberculosis below 10 mu M and were non-mutagenic, non-cytotoxic and the targets of some of the hits were also identified. The most active hits represented various scaffolds. Medicinal chemistry-based lead optimization was performed applying various strategies and, as a consequence, a series of novel potent compounds were synthesized. These efforts resulted in some effective potential antitubercular lead compounds which were confirmed in phenotypic assays. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study we have investigated a new class of cationic lipids - ``bolaamphiphiles'' or ``bolas'' - for their ability to efficiently deliver small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) to cancer cells. The bolas of this study consist of a hydrophobic chain with one or more positively charged head groups at each end. Recently, we reported that micelles of the bolas GLH-19 and GLH-20 (derived from vernonia oil) efficiently deliver siRNAs, while having relatively low toxicities in vitro and in vivo. Our previous studies validated that; bolaamphiphiles can be designed to vary the magnitude of siRNA shielding, its delivery, and its subsequent release. To further understand the structural features of bolas critical for siRNAs delivery, new structurally related bolas (GLH-58 and GLH-60) were designed and synthesized from jojoba oil. Both bolas have similar hydrophobic domains and contain either one, in GLH-58, or two, in GLH-60 positively charged head groups at each end of the hydrophobic core. We have computationally predicted and experimentally validated that GLH-58 formed more stable nano sized micelles than GLH-60 and performed significantly better in comparison to GLH-60 for siRNA delivery. GLH-58/siRNA complexes demonstrated better efficiency in silencing the expression of the GFP gene in human breast cancer cells at concentrations of 5 mu g/mL, well below the toxic dose. Moreover, delivery of multiple different siRNAs targeting the HIV genome demonstrated further inhibition of virus production. Published by Elsevier B.V.
