Mode I fracture experiments were conducted on brittle bulk metallic glass (BMG) samples and the fracture surface features were analyzed in detail to understand the underlying physical processes. Wollner lines, which result from the interaction between the propagating crack front and shear waves emanating from a secondary source, were observed on the fracture surface and geometric analysis of them indicates that the maximum crack velocity is similar to 800 m s(-1), which corresponds to similar to 0.32 times the shear wave speed. Fractography reveals that the sharp crack nucleation at the notch tip occurs at the mid-section of the specimens with the observation of flat and half-penny-shaped cracks. On this basis, we conclude that the crack initiation in brittle BMGs is stress-controlled and occurs through hydrostatic stress-assisted cavity nucleation ahead of the notch tip. High magnification scanning electron and atomic force microscopies of the dynamic crack growth regions reveal highly organized, nanoscale periodic patterns with a spacing of similar to 79 nm. Juxtaposition of the crack velocity with this spacing suggests that the crack takes similar to 10(-10) s for peak-to-peak propagation. This, and the estimated adiabatic temperature rise ahead of the propagating crack tip that suggests local softening, is utilized to critically discuss possible causes for the nanocorrugation formation. Taylor's fluid meniscus instability is unequivocally ruled out. Then, two other possible mechanisms, viz. (a) crack tip blunting and resharpening through nanovoid nucleation and growth ahead of the crack tip and eventual coalescence, and (b) dynamic oscillation of the crack in a thin slab of softened zone ahead of the crack-tip, are critically discussed. We report the effect of topological as well as lattice vacancy defects on the electro-thermal transport properties of the metallic zigzag graphene nano ribbons at their ballistic limit. We employ the density function theory-Non equilibrium green's function combination to calculate the transmission details. We then present an elaborated study considering the variation in the electrical current and the heat current transport with the change in temperature as well as the voltage gradient across the nano ribbons. The comparative analysis shows, that in the case of topological defects, such as the Stone-Wales defect, the electrical current transport is minimum. Besides, for the voltage gradient of 0.5 Volt and the temperature gradient of 300 K, the heat current transport reduces by similar to 62 % and similar to 50% for the cases of Stones-Wales defect and lattice vacancy defect respectively, compared to that of the perfect one.

The retention of the desired combination of mechanical/tribological properties in ultrafine grained materials presents important challenges in the field of bulk metallic composites. In order to address this aspect, the present work demonstrates how one can achieve a good combination of hardness and wear resistance in Cu-Pb-TiB2 composites, consolidated by spark plasma sintering at low temperatures ( < 500 degrees C). Transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies reveal ultrafine grains of Cu (100-400 nm) with coarser TiB2 particles (1-2 mu m) along with fine scale Pb dispersoid at triple junctions or at the grain boundaries of Cu. Importantly, a high hardness of around 2.2 GPa and relative density of close to 90% relative density (rho(theo)) have been achieved for Cu-15 wt% TiB2-10 wt% Pb composite. Such property theo, combination has never been reported for any Cu-based nanocomposite, by conventional processing route. In reference to the tribological performance, fretting wear tests were conducted on the sintered nanocomposites and a good combination of steady state COF (0.6-0.7) and wear rate (10-4 mm(3)/N m) were measured. An inverse relationship between wear rate and hardness was recorded and this commensurates well with Archard's relationship of abrasive wear. The formation of a wear-resistant delaminated tribolayer consisting of TiB2 particles and ultrafine oxide debris, (Cu, Fe, Ti)(x)O-y as confirmed from subsurface imaging using focused ion beam microscopy has been identified as the key factors for the low wear rate of these composites. A lithium-ion hybrid capacitor comprising of a battery type multi-component olivine (LiMn1/3Co1/3Ni1/3PO4) cathode and a capacitive type carbon negative electrode is reported. Olivine phosphate synthesized with chelating agent's polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or triethanolamine (TEA) showed uniform carbon coating through in-situ process exhibiting a surface area 5.1 m(2)/g with porosity 0.02 cm(3)/g. The surface area for commercial carbon electrode was observed to be 1450 m(2)/g with high porosity 0.76 cm(3)/g. Galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling tests were conducted in the coin cells, olivine vs. Li, offering a cell voltage of 4.75 V vs. Li with a maximum specific capacitance of 125 F/g. In the case of olivine vs. carbon in a lithium-ion hybrid device delivered a high discharge capacitance of 86 F/g at a specific current of 0.12 A/g with a cycling retention of 53 F/g (38% loss) after 250 cycles. The obtained performance of PVP synthesized olivine material is manifested to uniform carbon coating and the trapped organic products that provide pathways for facile electrochemical reactions than their TEA counterparts.

The paper explores the synthesis of oxide-free nanoparticles of Ag and Cu through laser ablation of pure targets under aqueous medium and tuning the quality and size through addition of Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the medium. The size distribution of nanoparticles reduces from 37 +/- 30 nm and 13 +/- 5 nm to 32 +/- 12 nm and 4 +/- 1 nm for Ag and Cu with changes in PVP concentration from 0.00 to 0.02 M, respectively. Irregular shaped particles of Ag with Ag2O phase and a Cu-Cu2O core-shell particles form without the addition of PVP, while oxide layer is absent with 0.02 M of PVP. The recent understanding of the mechanism of particle formation during laser ablation under liquid medium allows us to rationalize our observation.

Experimental studies and atomistic simulations have shown that brittle metallic glasses fail by a cavitation mechanism whose origin has been traced to the presence of intrinsic atomic density fluctuations which give rise to weak zones with reduced yield strength. It has been shown recently through continuum analysis that the presence of these zones can lower the cavitation stress considerably under equibiaxial loading. The objective of the present work is to study the effect of the applied stress state on the cavitation behavior of such a heterogeneous plastic solid with distributed weak zones. To this end, 2D plane strain finite element simulations are performed by subjecting a unit cell containing a weak zone to different (biaxiality) stress ratios. The volume fraction and yield strength of the weak zone are varied over a wide range. The results show that unlike in a homogeneous plastic solid, the cavitation stress of the heterogeneous aggregate does not reduce appreciably as the stress ratio decreases from unity when the yield strength of the weak zone is low. It is found that a non-dimensional parameter characterizing the stress state prevailing in the weak zone and its yield properties uniquely control the cavitation stress. The nature of cavitation bifurcation may change from unstable bifurcation to the left at sufficiently low stress ratio to one involving snap cavitation at high stress ratio. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Several covalent strategies towards surface charge-reversal in nanochannels have been reported with the purpose of manipulating ion transport. However, covalent routes lack dynamism, modularity and post-synthetic flexibility, and hence restrict their applicability in different environments. Here, we introduce a facile non-covalent approach towards charge-reversal in nanochannels (< 10 nm) using strong charge-transfer interactions between dicationic viologen (acceptor) and trianionic pyranine (donor). The polarity of ion transport was switched from anion selective to ambipolar to cation selective by controlling the extent of viologen bound to the pyranine. We could also regulate the ion transport with respect to pH by selecting a donor with pH-responsive functional groups. The modularity of this approach further allows facile integration of various functional groups capable of responding to stimuli such as light and temperature to modulate the transport of ions as well as molecules.

A newly designed and structurally characterized cell permeable diformyl-p-cresol based receptor (HL) selectively senses the AsO33- ion up to ca. 4.1 ppb in aqueous media over the other competitive ions at biological pH through an intermolecular H-bonding induced CHEF (chelationenhanced fluorescence) process, established by detailed experimental and theoretical studies. This biofriendly probe is highly competent in recognizing the existence of AsO33- ions in a living organism by developing an image under a fluorescence microscope and useful to estimate the amount of arsenite ions in various water samples.

All solid state batteries are essential candidate for miniaturizing the portable electronics devices. Thin film batteries are constructed by layer by layer deposition of electrode materials by physical vapour deposition method. We propose a promising novel method and unique architecture, in which highly porous graphene sheet embedded with SnO2 nanowire could be employed as the anode electrode in lithium ion thin film battery. The vertically standing graphene flakes were synthesized by microwave plasma CVD and SnO2 nanowires based on a vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism via thermal evaporation at low synthesis temperature (620 degrees C). The graphene sheet/SnO2 nanowire composite electrode demonstrated stable cycling behaviours and delivered a initial high specific discharge capacity of 1335 mAh g(-1) and 900 mAh g(-1) after the 50th cycle. Furthermore, the SnO2 nanowire electrode displayed superior rate capabilities with various current densities.

A new cell permeable quinazoline based receptor (1) selectively senses HSO4- ions of nanomolar region in 0.1 M HEPES buffer (ethanol-water: 1/5, v/v) at biological pH over other competitive ions through the proton transfer followed by hydrogen bond formation and subsequent anion coordination to yield the LHSO4]-LH+center dot 3H(2)O (2) ensemble, which has been crystallographically characterised to ensure the structure property relationship. This non-cytotoxic HSO4- ion selective biomarker has great potential to recognize the intercellular distribution of HSO4- ions in HeLa cells under fluorescence microscope.

We report a direct correlation between dissimilar ion pair formation and alkali ion transport in soda-lime silicate glasses established via broad band conductivity spectroscopy and local structural probe techniques. The combined Raman and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy techniques on these glasses reveal the coexistence of different anionic species and the prevalence of Na+-Ca2+ dissimilar pairs as well as their distributions. The spectroscopic results further confirm the formation of dissimilar pairs atomistically, where it increases with increasing alkaline-earth oxide content These results, are the manifestation of local structural changes in the silicate network with composition which give rise to different environments into which the alkali ions hop. The Na+ ion mobility varies inversely with dissimilar pair formation, i.e. it decreases with increase of non-random formation of dissimilar pairs. Remarkably, we found that increased degree of non-randomness leads to temperature dependent variation in number density of sodium ions. Furthermore, the present study provides the strong link between the dynamics of the alkali ions and different sites associated with it in soda-lime silicate glasses. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Pyrophosphate cathodes have been recently reported as a competent family of insertion compounds for sodium-ion batteries. In the current study, we have investigated the binary Na2 - x(Fe1 - yMny)P2O7 (0 <= y <= 1) pyrophosphate family, synthesized by the classical solid-state method. They form a continuous solid solution maintaining triclinic P-1 (#2) symmetry. The local structural coordination differs mainly by different degrees of Na site occupancy and preferential occupation of the Fe2 site by Mn. The structural and magnetic properties of these mixed-metal pyrophosphate phases have been studied. In each case, complete Fe3+/Fe2+ redox activity has been obtained centered at 3 V vs. Na. The Fe3+/Fe2+ redox process involves multiple steps between 2.5 and 3 V owing to Na-cation ordering during electrochemical cycling, which merge to form a broad single Fe3+/Fe2+ redox peak upon progressive Mn-doping. Iron nanostructures with morphology ranging from discrete nanoparticles to nearly monodisperse hierarchical nanostructures have been successfully synthesized using solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method. Such a morphological evolution was realized by tuning the molar ratio of ligand to metal. Surface energy minimization in confluence with strong magnetic interactions and ligand-based stabilization results in the formation of nanospheres of iron. The as-prepared amorphous iron nanostructures exhibit remarkably high coercivity in comparison to the discrete nanoparticles and bulk counterpart. Annealing the as-prepared amorphous Fe nanostructures under anaerobic conditions affords air-stable carbon-encapsulated Fe(0) and Fe3C nanostructures with retention of the morphology. The resulting nanostructures were thoroughly analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. TGA brought out that Fe3C nanostructures are more robust toward oxidation than those of a-Fe. Finally, detailed magnetic studies were carried out by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer and it was found that the magnetic properties remain conserved even upon exposure of the annealed samples to ambient conditions for months.

In this study, thin films of cobalt oxide (Co3O4) have been grown by the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique on stainless steel substrate at two preferred temperatures (450 degrees C and 500 degrees C), using cobalt acetylacetonate dihydrate as precursor. Spherical as well as columnar microstructures of Co3O4 have been observed under controlled growth conditions. Further investigations reveal these films are phase-pure, well crystallized and carbon-free. High-resolution TEM analysis confirms that each columnar structure is a continuous stack of minute crystals. Comparative study between these Co3O4 films grown at 450 degrees C and 500 degrees C has been carried out for their application as negative electrodes in Li-ion batteries. Our method of electrode fabrication leads to a coating of active material directly on current collector without any use of external additives. A high specific capacity of 1168 micro Ah cm(-2) mu m(-1) has been measured reproducibly for the film deposited at 500 degrees C with columnar morphology. Further, high rate capability is observed when cycled at different current densities. The Co3O4 electrode with columnar structure has a specific capacity 38% higher than the electrode with spherical microstructure (grown at 450 degrees C). Impedance measurements on the Co3O4 electrode grown at 500 degrees C also carried out to study the kinetics of the electrode process. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.
