A critical limitation that has hampered widespread application of the electrically conducting reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) is its poor aqueous dispersibility. Here we outline a strategy to obtain water-dispersible conducting r-GO sheets, free of any stabilizing agents, by exploiting the fact that the kinetics of the photoreduction of the insulating GO is heterogeneous. We show that by controlling UV exposure times and pH, we can obtain r-GO sheets with the conducting sp(2)-graphitic domains restored but with the more acidic carboxylic groups, responsible for aqueous dispersibility, intact. The resultant photoreduced r-GO sheets are both conducting and water-dispersible.

Longitudinal relaxation due to cross-correlation between dipolar ((HN-1H alpha)-H-1) and amide-proton chemical shift anisotropy (H-1(N) CSA) has been measured in a model tripeptide Piv-(L)Pro-(L)Pro-(L)Phe-OMe. The peptide bond across diproline segment is known to undergo cis/trans isomerization and only in the cis form does the lone Phe amide-proton become involved in intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The strength of the cross correlated relaxation interference is found to be significantly different between cis and trans forms, and this difference is shown as an influence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding on the amide-proton CSA. Graphene oxide (GO), prepared by chemical oxidation of graphite, serves as a building block for developing polymeric nanocomposites. However, their application in electrical conductivity is limited by the fact that the oxygen sites on GO trap electrons and impede charge transport. Conducting nanocomposites can be developed by reducing GO. Various strategies have been adopted to either reduce GO ex situ, before the composite preparation, or in situ during the development of the nanocomposites. The current state of research on in situ reduction of GO during the preparation of conducting polymeric nanocomposites is discussed in this review. The mechanism and the efficiency of reduction is discussed with respect to various strategies employed during the preparation of the nanocomposite, the type of polymer used, and the processing conditions employed, etc. Its overall effect on the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites is also discussed and the future outlook in this area is presented.

In this work, porous membranes were designed by selectively etching the PEO phase, by water, from a melt-mixed PE/PEO blend. The pure water flux and the resistance across the membrane were systematically evaluated by employing an indigenously developed cross flow membrane setup. Both the phase morphology and the cross sectional morphology of the membranes was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and an attempt was made to correlate the observed morphology with the membrane performance. In order to design antibacterial membranes for water purification, partially reduced graphene oxide (rGO), silver nanoparticles (Ag) and silver nanoparticles decorated with rGO (rGO-Ag) were synthesized and incorporated directly into the blends during melt mixing. The loss of viability of bacterial cells was determined by the colony counting method using E. coli as a model bacterium. SEM images display that the direct contact with the rGO-Ag nanoparticles disrupts the cell membrane. In addition, the rGO-Ag nanoparticles exhibited a synergistic effect with respect to bacterial cell viability in comparison to both rGO and Ag nanoparticles. The possible mechanism associated with the antibacterial activity in the membranes was discussed. This study opens new avenues in designing antibacterial membranes for water purification.

The crystal structures of nine peptides containing gamma(4)Val and gamma(4)Leu are described. The short sequences Boc-gamma(4)(R)Val](2)-OMe 1, Boc-gamma(4)(R)Val](3)-NHMe 2 and Boc-gamma(4)(S)Val-gamma(4)(R)Val-OMe 3 adopt extended apolar, sheet like structures. The tetrapeptide Boc-gamma(4)(R)Val](4)-OMe 4 adopts an extended conformation, in contrast to the folded C-14 helical structure determined previously for Boc-gamma(4)(R)Leu](4)-OMe. The hybrid alpha gamma sequence Boc-Ala-gamma(4)(R)Leu](2)-OMe 5 adopts an S-shaped structure devoid of intramolecular hydrogen bonds, with both alpha residues adopting local helical conformations. In sharp contrast, the tetrapeptides Boc-Aib-gamma(4)(S)Leu](2)-OMe 6 and Boc-Leu-gamma(4)(R)Leu](2)-OMe 7 adopt folded structures stabilized by two successive C-12 hydrogen bonds. gamma(4)Val residues have also been incorporated into the strand segments of a crystalline octapeptide, Boc-Leu-gamma(4)(R)Val-Val-(D)Pro-Gly-Leu-gamma(4)(R)Val-Val-OMe 8. The gamma gamma delta gamma tetrapeptide containing gamma(4)Val and delta(5)Leu residues adopts an extended sheet like structure. The hydrogen bonding pattern at gamma residues corresponds to an apolar sheet, while a polar sheet is observed at the lone delta residue. The transition between folded and extended structures at gamma residues involves a change of the torsion angle from the gauche to the trans conformation about the C-beta-C-alpha bond.

A unique approach was adopted to drive the multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to the interface of immiscible PVDF-ABS blends by wrapping the nanotubes with a mutually miscible homopolymer (PMMA). A tailor made interface with an improved stress transfer was achieved in the blends with PMMA wrapped MWNTs. This manifested in an impressive 108% increment in the tensile strength and 48% increment in the Young's modulus with 3 wt% PMMA wrapped MWNTs in striking contrast to the neat blends. As the PMMA wrapped MWNTs localized at the interface of PVDF-ABS blends, the electrical conductivity could be tuned with respect to only MWNTs, which were selectively localized in the PVDF phase, driven by thermodynamics. The electromagnetic shielding properties were assessed using a vector network analyser in a broad range of frequency, X-band (8-12 GHz) and Ku-band (12-18 GHz). Interestingly, enhanced EM shielding was achieved by this unique approach. The blends with only MWNTs shielded the EM waves mostly by reflection however, the blends with PMMA wrapped MWNTs (3 wt%) shielded mostly by absorption (62%). This study opens new avenues in designing materials, which show simultaneous improvement in mechanical, electrical conductivity and EM shielding properties.

Lightweight and flexible electromagnetic shielding materials were designed by selectively localizing multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) anchored magnetic nanoparticles in melt mixed co-continuous blends of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN). In order to facilitate better dispersion, the MWNTs were modified using pyrenebutyric acid (PBA) via pi-pi stacking. While one of the two-targeted properties, i.e., high electrical conductivity, was achieved by PBA modified MWNTs, high magnetic loss was accomplished by introducing nickel (NF) or cobalt ferrites (CF). Moreover, the attenuation by absorption can be tuned either by using NF (58% absorption) or CF (64% absorption) in combination with PBA-MWNTs. More interestingly, when CF was anchored on to MWNTs via the pyrene derivative, the minimum reflection loss attained was -55 dB in the Ku band (12-18 GHz) frequency and with a large bandwidth. In addition, the EM waves were blocked mostly by absorption (70%). This study opens new avenues in designing flexible and lightweight microwave absorbers.

Gramicidin S (GS) is a cyclic cationic antimicrobial peptide (CAP) with a wide spectrum of antibiotic activities whose usage has been limited to topical applications owing to its cytotoxic side effects. We have synthesized tetrahydrofuran amino acid (Taa)-containing GS analogues, and we have carried out conformational analysis and explored their structure activity relationships by evaluating their antitubercular, antibacterial and cytotoxic properties. Two of these analogues showed impressive as well as selective activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) without toxicity towards mammalian Vero cells or human RBCs, and are promising as potential leads.

This is the first successful attempt to produce Mg-Ce alloys of different texture through different processing routes while keeping the grain size and grain size distribution same. Tensile data shows that contribution of texture to ductility enhancement is primary and that of grain refinement is secondary. The texture resulting from multi-axial forging of extruded billets followed by annealing exhibits the highest ductility (similar to 40%) at room temperature. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. A Li-rich layered-spinel material with a target composition Li1.17Ni0.25Mn1.08O3 (xLiLi1/3Mn2/3]O-2.(1 - x) LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4, (x = 0.5)) was synthesized by a self-combustion reaction (SCR), characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman spectroscopy and was studied as a cathode material for Li-ion batteries. The Rietveld refinement results indicated the presence of monoclinic (LiLi1/3Mn2/3]O-2) (52%), spinel (LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4) (39%) and rhombohedral LiNiO2 (9%). The electrochemical performance of this Li-rich integrated cathode material was tested at 30 degrees C and compared to that of high voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel cathodes. Interestingly, the layered-spinel integrated cathode material exhibits a high specific capacity of about 200 mA h g(-1) at C/10 rate as compared to 180 mA h g(-1) for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 in the potential range of 2.4-4.9 V vs. Li anodes in half cells. The layered-spinel integrated cathodes exhibited 92% capacity retention as compared to 82% for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel after 80 cycles at 30 degrees C. Also, the integrated cathode material can exhibit 105 mA h g(-1) at 2 C rate as compared to 78 mA h g(-1) for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. Thus, the presence of the monoclinic phase in the composite structure helps to stabilize the spinel structure when high specific capacity is required and the electrodes have to work within a wide potential window. Consequently, the Li1.17Ni0.25Mn1.08O3 composite material described herein can be considered as a promising cathode material for Li ion batteries.

Aim: To develop a mesh meant to be mounted on a windowpane that will act as a barrier for dust, while allowing wind to pass freely. Materials and Methods: Two small metal meshes separated at 1 cm, connected to an electrostatic generator and holding opposite charges are used. A videographic analysis has been performed. Results: The charged bilayered mesh was able to prevent a large portion of dust from passing through. Conclusion: The device is a simple, economical, and reliable way of reducing the entry of dust into a room, easing the need for periodic cleaning, and thus creating a healthier environment for the inhabitants of the building. It also has potential space applications.

Impedance spectroscopic studies on modified phospho-vanadate glasses containing SO42- ions have been carried out over wide range of frequency. Modulated DSC studies suggest that the addition of alkali salt makes the glass less rigid and more fragile. The frequency dependent impedance data has been used to calculate d.c conductivity and activation energies. These values are comparable with the other ionic liquids. The conductivity and relaxation phenomenon was rationalized using universal a.c conductivity power law and modulus formalism. The activation energies for relaxation mechanism was also determined using imaginary parts of electrical modulus peaks which were close to those of the d.c conductivity implying the involvement of similar energy barriers in both the processes. Kohlrausch-William-Watts (KWW) stretched exponent beta, is temperature insensitive and power law (s) exponent is temperature dependent. The enhanced conductivity in these glasses is attributed to the depolymerised structure in which migration of Na+ ions proceeds in an expanded network comprising SO42- ions in the interstitials. The effect of structure on activation energy is well supported by abinitio DFT computations. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The major challenges in Li-S batteries are the formation of soluble polysulphides during the reversible conversion of S-8 <-> Li2S, large changes in sulphur particle volume during lithiation and extremely poor charge transport in sulphur. We demonstrate here a novel and simple strategy to overcome these challenges towards practical realization of a stable high performance Li-S battery. For the first time, a strategy is developed which does away with the necessity of pre-fabricated high surface area hollow-structured adsorbates and also multiple nontrivial synthesis steps related to sulphur loading inside such adsorbates. A lithiated polyethylene glycol (PEG) based surfactant tethered on ultra-small sulphur nanoparticles and wrapped up with polyaniline (PAni) (abbreviated as S-MIEC) is demonstrated here as an exceptional cathode for Li-S batteries. The PEG and PAni network around the sulphur nanoparticles serves as an efficient flexible trap for sulphur and polysulphides and also provides distinct pathways for electrons (through PAni) and ions (through PEG) during battery operation. Contrary to the cathodes demonstrated based on various carbon-sulphur composites, the mixed conducting S-MIEC showed an extremely high loading of 75%. The S-MIEC exhibited a stable capacity of nearly 900 mA h g(-1) at the end of 100 cycles at a 1C current rate.

Nanocrystalline Mn0.4Zn0.6SmxGdyFe2-(x+y)O4 (x = y = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05) were synthesized by combustion route. The detailed structural studies were carried out through X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results confirms the formation of mixed spine phase with cubic structure due to the distortion created with co-dopants substitution at Fe site in Mn-Zn ferrite lattice. Further, the crystallite size increases with an increase of Sm3+-Gd3+ ions concentration while lattice parameter and lattice strain decreases. Furthermore, the effect of Sm-Gd co-doping in Mn-Zn ferrite on the room temperature electrical (dielectric studies) studies were carried out in the wide frequency range 1 GHz-5 GHz. The magnetic studies were carried out using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) under applied magnetic field of 1.5T and also room temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra's were recorded. From the results of dielectric studies, it shows that the real and imaginary part of permittivities are increasing with variation of Gd3+ and Sm3+ concentration. The magnetic studies reveal the decrease of remnant, saturation magnetization and coercivity with increasing of Sm3+-Gd3+ ion concentration. The g-value, peak-to-peak line width and spin concentration evaluated from EPR spectra correlated with cations occupancy. The electromagnetic properties clearly indicate that these materials are the good candidates which are useful at L and C band frequency. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
