An experimental flow loop with He II flow driven by fountain effect pumps (FEPs) is studied with respect to operation at different flow impedances and with thermal loads applied at different positions. The measured values of temperature, flow rate and pressure drop are compared with calculations resulting from a simplified model which assumes ideal performance of the porous plug and of the heat exchangers and which does not take into account Gorter-Mellink (GM) conduction. The main features of the loop are shown to be well described by this model. Refined calculations with a more complex model, including GM conduction of the He II, are only required for predicting the temperature distribution in some discrete regions of the loop.

Cell-free extracts with high 14?-hydroxylase activity were prepared from induced vegetative cell cultures of Mucor piriformis by grinding in potassium phosphate buffer (0.05 M, pH 8.0) containing glucose (0.25 M), KCl (1 mM), glutathione (1.0 mM) and glycerol (10%). Although the ideal pH for preparing the cell-free extract from vegetative cells was 8.0, the pH optimum of the hydroxylase was found to be 7.6. Microsomes (2.0 mg) prepared from the crude cell-free extract hydroxylated progesterone to 14?-hydroxyprogesterone in not, vert, similar60% yields in 30 min in the presence of NADPH and O2. Microsomes prepared from the uninduced cells did not contain any 14?-hydroxylase activity. The hydroxylase activity was inhibited to a significant extent by CO and p-chloromercuribenzoate whereas moderate inhibition was noticed in the presence of SKF-525A, metyrapone and N-methylmaleimideindicating the possible involvement of the cytochromeP-450 system in the reaction. The membrane bound hydroxylase was solubilized using Triton X-100 and the solubilized fraction contained nearly 35% of the original hydroxylase activity.

1. The metabolic disposition of R-(+)-pulegone (1) was examined in rats following four daily oral doses (250 mg/kg). 2. Six metabolites, namely pulegol (II), 2-hydroxy-2-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-5-methylcyclohexanone (III), 3,6-dimethyl-7a-hydroxy-5,6,7,7a-tetrahydro-2(4H)-benzofuranone (IV), menthofuran (V), 5-methyl-2-(1-methyl-1-carboxyethylidene)cyclohexanone (VI), and 5-methyl-5-hydroxy-2-(1-hydroxy-1-carboxyethyl)cyclohexanone (VII) have previously been isolated from rat urine, and identified (Moorthy et al. (1989a). Eight new metabolites have now been isolated from rat urine, namely, 5-hydroxy-pulegone (VIII), piperitone (IX), piperitenone (X), 7-hydroxy-piperitone (XI), 8-hydroxy piperitone (XII), p-cresol (XIII), geranic acid (XIV) and neronic acid (XV). These were identified by n.m.r., i.r. and mass spectrometry. 3. Based on these results, metabolic pathways for the biotransformation of R-(+)-pulegone in rat have been proposed.
Synthesis, characterization, and thermal degradation studies on group VIA derived weak-link polymers

Polymers containing group VIA derived weak links, viz. poly(styrene disulfide) (PSD), poly- (styrene tetrasulfide) (PST), and poly(styrene diselenide) (PSDSE), have been synthesized. The polymers PSD and PST were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, TGA, and fast atom bombardment m w spectrometric (FABMS) techniques. The presence of different configurational sequences in PSD and PST were identified by *3C NMR spectroscopy. PSDSE, being insoluble in common organic solvents, was characterized using solid-state lac NMR (CP-MAS) spectroscopy. Thermal degradation of polymers under direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometric (DP-MS) conditions revealed that all the polymers undergo degradation through the weaklink scission. A comparative study of the pyrolysis products of these polymers with that of poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP) revealed a smooth transformation down the group with no monomer (styrene or oxygen) formation in PSP to only styrene and selenium metal in PSDSE. This trend of group VIA is explained from the energetics of the C-X bond (X = 0, S, and Se) which also seems to be important in addition to the weak X-X bond cleavage. In PSP and PSD, the behavior is also explained from the energetics of the alkoxy and thiyl radicals. The unique exothermic degradation in PSP compared to endothermic degradation in PSD and PSDSE is explained from the nature of the producta of degradation.

Bulk, melt quenched Ge18Te82-xBix glasses (1 <= x <= 4) have been found to exhibit memory type electrical switching behavior, which is in agreement with the lower thermal diffusivity values of Ge-Te-Bi samples. A linear variation in switching voltages (V-th) has been found in these samples with increase in thickness which is consistent with the memory type electrical switching. Also, the switching voltages have been found to decrease with an increase in temperature which happens due to the decrease in the activation energy for crystallization at higher temperatures. Further. V-th of Ge18Te82-xBix glasses have been found to decrease with the increase in Bi content, indicating that in the Ge-Te-Bi system, the resistivity of the additive has a stronger role to play in the composition dependence of V-th, in comparison with the network connectivity and rigidity factors. In addition, the composition dependence of crystallization activation energy has been found to show a decrease with an increase in Bi content, which is consistent with the observed decrease in the switching voltages. X-ray diffraction studies on thermally crystallized samples reveal the presence of hexagonal Te, GeTe, Bi2Te3 phases, suggesting that bismuth is not taking part in network formation to a greater extent, as reflected in the variation of switching voltages with the addition of Bi. SEM studies on switched and un-switched regions of Ge-Te-Bi samples indicate that there are morphological changes in the switched region, which can be attributed to the formation of the crystalline channel between two electrodes during switching. We report on the X-band (similar to 9.43 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigations carried out on polycrystalline Ga1-xMnxSb (x=0.02). A strong EPR signal with an effective g factor (g(eff)) close to 2.00 was observed, suggesting that the ionic state of Mn which replaces Ga ion in the lattice, is Mn2+ attributable to Delta M=1 transition of the ionized Mn acceptor A(-), Mn (3d(5)). The apparent absence of EPR signal, typical for neutral Mn acceptor at g=2.7 suggests either no such centers are present or the signal broadens beyond detection limit. The temperature dependent EPR studies combined with dc magnetization data suggest the possible coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases at very low temperatures. This paper proposes a compact electric discharge plasma source for controlling NOX emission in diesel engine exhaust. An automobile ignition coil was used to generate the high voltage pulse using flyback topology. This design is aimed at retrofitting the existing catalytic converters with pulse assisted cleaning technique. In this paper we bring out a relative comparison of discharge plasma and plasma-adsorbent process at different gas flow rates. Activated alumina was used as adsorbent. The main emphasis is laid on the development of a compact pulse source from a DC supply for the removal of NOX from the filtered diesel engine exhaust.

A mutant of Erythrina corallodendron lectin was generated with the aim of enhancing its affinity for N-acetylgalactosamine. A tyrosine residue close to the binding site of the lectin was mutated to a glycine in order to facilitate stronger interactions between the acetamido group of the sugar and the lectin which were prevented by the side chain of the tyrosine in the wild-type lectin. The crystal structures of this Y106G mutant lectin in complex with galactose and N-acetylgalactosamine have been determined. A structural rationale has been provided for the differences in the relative binding affinities of the wild-type and mutant lectins towards the two sugars based on the structures. A hydrogen bond between the O6 atom of the sugars and the variable loop of the carbohydrate-binding site of the lectin is lost in the mutant complexes owing to a conformational change in the loop. This loss is compensated by an additional hydrogen bond that is formed between the acetamido group of the sugar and the mutant lectin in the complex with N-acetylgalactosamine, resulting in a higher affinity of the mutant lectin for N-acetylgalactosamine compared with that for galactose, in contrast to the almost equal affinity of the wild-type lectin for the two sugars. The structure of a complex of the mutant with a citrate ion bound at the carbohydrate-binding site that was obtained while attempting to crystallize the complexes with sugars is also presented.

High-pressure resistivity measurements have been performed on G37.5AsxTe92.5-x (x = 20, 40, 45, 50 and 55) and Ge10AsxTe90-x (x = 15, 20, 35, 40, 45 and 50) glasses. The glasses show reversible metallization behaviour under pressure. The pressure derivative of the logarithm of the resistivity of the glasses is a minimum at glass compositions corresponding to the average coordination number [r] = 2.60. This behaviour is interpreted on the basis of the existence of a critical composition in glasses with a layered structure.

Five compounds, viz. 1,1'-ferrocenediyldiethylidene bis(thiocarbonohydrazide) (DAFT), 1,1-diacetylferrocene disemicarbazone (DAFS), 1,1-diacetylferrocenebenzoyl hydrazone (FDBAH), 1,1-diacetylferrocene-p-nitrobenzoyl hydrazone (FDNBAH), and p-toluenesulfonic acid 1,1'-ferrocenediyldiethylidene dihydrazide (TFDD) were found to be bonding agents as well as burning-rate modifiers for the ammonium perchlorate + hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene system. The tensile strength and percentage elongation significantly increased in the presence of these bonding agents (except FDBAH). The bonding agents generally did not adversely affect the slurry viscosity during processing. The bonding sites were located by infrared spectroscopy, supported by determination of the dissolution kinetics of the bonding agents and scanning electron microscopy. The bonding agents did not undergo any side-reactions with the curing agents.

he effect of pressure on the conductivity of AgI-Ag2 O-MoO3 glasses has been reexamined. A conductivity maximum is observed around 0.7 GPa. No variation of the sample temperature is noted under pressure. The results are found to agree well with the cluster-tissue model.

Bulk Ge(17)Te83_,JI glasses (05x.5_13), have been found to exhibit memory type electrical switching. The switching voltages (also known as threshold voltage V-th) of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses are found to decrease with increasing thallium content. The rate of decrease of Vtry is greater at lower concentrations and \textbackslashid, falls at a slower rate for higher thallium concentrations (x 6). The addition of thallium to the Ge-Te network fragments the covalent network and introduces ionic nature to it; the reduction in network connectivity leads to the decrease in switching voltages with thallium content. The decrease in the glass transition temperatures of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses with increasing thallium concentration supports the idea of decrease in network connectivity with TI addition. The more metallic nature of TI also contributes to the observed reduction in the switching voltages of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses with TI content. Further, there is an interesting correlation seen between the threshold voltage V-th and the average bond energy, as a function of TI content. In addition, the switching voltages of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses have been found to decrease with sample thickness almost linearly. The set-reset studies indicate that the Ge17Te83-xTl2 sample can be switched for more than 10 cycles, whereas other glasses could not be reset beyond two switching cycles. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Silver selenide thin films of thickness between 80 nm and 160 nm were prepared by thermal evaporation technique at a high vacuum better than 2x10(-5)mbar on well cleaned glass substrates at a deposition rate of 0.2 nm/sec. Silver selenide thin films were polycrystalline with orthorhombic structure. Ellipsometric spectra of silver selenide thin films have been recorded in the wavelength range between 300 nm and 700 nm. Optical constants like refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption coefficient, and optical band gap of silver selenide thin film have been calculated from the recorded spectra. The refractive index of silver selenide has been found to vary between 1.9 and 3.2 and the extinction coefficient varies from 0.5 to 1.6 with respect to their corresponding thickness of the films. Transmittance spectra of these films have been recorded in the wavelength range between 300 nm and 900 nm and its spectral data are analysed. The photoluminescence studies have been carried out on silver selenide thin films and the strong emission peak is found around 1.7 eV. The calculated optical band of thermally evaporated silver selenide thin films is found to be around 1.7 eV from their Ellipsometric, UV-Visible and Photoluminescence spectroscopic studies.

Although a distinct need for FSH in the regulation of follicular maturation in the primate is well recognized, it is not clear how FSH controls the functionality of different cellular compartments of the follicle. It is also not evident whether there is a requirement for LH in follicular maturation in the primate. In the first part of the present study, female bonnet monkeys were administered a well-characterized ovine (o) LH antiserum to neutralize endogenous monkey LH for different periods during the follicular phase, and the effect on the overall follicular maturation process was assessed by analyzing serum estrogen (E) and progesterone (P) profiles. Neither continuous LH deprivation from Day 8 of the cycle nor deprivation of LH on any one day between Days 6 and 10 had a significant effect on serum E and P profiles and the follicular maturation process. The period for which the antiserum was effective was dependent upon the dose injected; 1 ml of the antiserum given on Day 8 blocked ovulation but not follicular maturation. To assess the effect of deprivation of LH/FSH at the cellular level, animals were deprived in vivo of LH (on Days 8 and 9 of the cycle) or of FSH (on Day 6 of the cycle) by injection of highly characterized hCG and ovine (o) FSH antisera, respectively; the in vitro responsiveness of granulosa and thecal cells isolated on Day 10 from these animals was then determined.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
