Raman spectroscopic study on Oxyfluoro Vanadate glasses containing various proportions of lithium fluoride and rubidium fluoride was carried out to see an effect of mixture of alkali on vanadium-oxygen (V-O) bond length. Glasses with a general formula 40V(2)O(5) - 30BaF(2) - (30 - x) LiF - xRbF (x = 0-30) were prepared. Room temperature Raman spectra of these glass samples were recorded in back scattering geometry. The data presented is in ``reduced Raman intensity'' form with maximum peak scaled to 100. We have used v = Aexp(BR), where A and B are fitting parameters, to correlate the bond length R with Raman scattering frequency v. We observed that variation in bond length and its distribution about a most probable value can be correlated to the alkali environment present in these glasses. We also observed that all rubidium environment around the network forming unit is more homogenous than all lithium environment.

IR spectroscopy has been widely employed to distinguish between different crystal forms such as polymorphs, clathrates, hydrates and co-crystals. IR has been used to monitor co-crystal formation and single synthon detection. In this work, we have developed a strategy to identify multiple supramolecular synthons in polymorphs and co-crystals with this technique. The identification of multiple synthons in co-crystals with IR is difficult for several reasons. In this paper, a four step method involving well assigned IR spectral markers that correspond to bonds in a synthon is used. IR spectra of three forms of the co-crystal system, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid: 4,4'-bipyridine (2 : 1), show clear differences that may be attributed to differences in the synthon combinations existing in the forms (synthon polymorphism). These differences were picked out from the three IR spectra and the bands analysed and assigned to synthons. Our method first identifies IR marker bands corresponding to (covalent) bonds in known/model crystals and then the markers are mapped in known co-crystals having single synthons. Thereafter, the IR markers are queried in known co-crystals with multiple synthons. Finally they are queried in unknown co-crystals with multiple synthons. In the last part of the study, the N-H stretching absorptions of primary amides that crystallize with the amide dimers linked in a ladder like chain show two specific absorptions which are used as marker absorptions and all variations of this band structure have been used to provide details on the environment around the dimer. The extended dimer can accordingly be easily distinguished from the isolated dimer.

We propose a novel numerical method based on a generalized eigenvalue decomposition for solving the diffusion equation governing the correlation diffusion of photons in turbid media. Medical imaging modalities such as diffuse correlation tomography and ultrasound-modulated optical tomography have the (elliptic) diffusion equation parameterized by a time variable as the forward model. Hitherto, for the computation of the correlation function, the diffusion equation is solved repeatedly over the time parameter. We show that the use of a certain time-independent generalized eigenfunction basis results in the decoupling of the spatial and time dependence of the correlation function, thus allowing greater computational efficiency in arriving at the forward solution. Besides presenting the mathematical analysis of the generalized eigenvalue problem on the basis of spectral theory, we put forth the numerical results that compare the proposed numerical method with the standard technique for solving the diffusion equation.

CsI can be used as a photocathode material in UV photon detectors. The detection efficiency of the detector strongly depends on the photoemission property of the photocathode. CsI is very hygroscopic in nature. This limits the photoelectron yield from the photocathode when exposed to humid air even for a short duration during photocathode mounting or transfer. We report here on the improvement of photoemission properties of both thick (300 nm) and thin (30 nm) UV-sensitive CsI film exposed to humid air by the process of vacuum treatment. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis has been carried out on the hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films deposited by DC, pulsed DC (PDC) and RF sputtering process to get insight regarding the total hydrogen concentration (C-H) in the films, configuration of hydrogen bonding, density of the films (decided by the vacancy and void incorporation) and the microstructure factor (R*) which varies with the type of sputtering carried out at the same processing conditions. The hydrogen incorporation is found to be more in RF sputter deposited films as compared to PDC and DC sputter deposited films. All the films were broadly divided into two regions namely vacancy dominated and void dominated regions. At low hydrogen dilutions the films are vacancy dominated and at high hydrogen dilutions they are void dominated. This demarcation is at C-H = 23 at.% H for RF, C-H = 18 at.% H for PDC and C-H = 14 at.% H for DC sputter deposited films. The microstructure structure factor R* is found to be as low as 0.029 for DC sputter deposited films at low C-H. For a given C-H, DC sputter deposited films have low R* as compared to PDC and RF sputter deposited films. Signature of dihydride incorporation is found to be more in DC sputter deposited films at low C-H.

The effects of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the concentration fluctuations, interfacial driven elasticity, phase morphology, and local segmental dynamics of chains for near-critical compositions of polystyrene/poly(vinyl to methyl ether) (PS/PVME) blends were systematically investigated using dynamic shear rheology and dielectric spectroscopy. The contribution of the correlation length (xi) of the concentration fluctuations to the evolving stresses was monitored in situ to probe the different stages of demixing in the blends. The classical upturn in the dynamic moduli was taken as the rheological demixing temperature (T-rheo), which was also observed to be in close agreement with those obtained using concentration fluctuation variance, <(delta phi)(2)>, versus temperature curves. Further, Fredrickson and Larson's approach involving the mean-field approximation and the double-reptation self-concentration (DRSC) model was employed to evaluate the spinodal decomposition temperature (T-s). Interestingly, the values of both T-rheo and T-s shifted upward in the blends in the presence of MWNTs, manifesting in molecular-level miscibility. These phenomenal changes were further observed to be a function of the concentration of MWNTs. The evolution of morphology as a function of temperature was studied using polarized optical microscopy (POM). It was observed that PVME, which evolved as an interconnected network during the early stages of demixing, coarsened into a matrix-droplet morphology in the late stages. The preferential wetting of PVME onto MWNTs as a result of physicochemical interactions retained the interconnected network of PVME for longer time scales, as supported by POM and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images. Microscopic heterogeneity in macroscopically miscible systems was studied by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. The slowing of segmental relaxations in PVME was observed in the presence of both ``frozen'' PS and MWNTs interestingly at temperatures much below the calorimetric glass transition temperature (T-g). This phenomenon was observed to be local rather than global and was addressed by monitoring the evolution of the relaxation spectra near and above the demixing temperature.

We theoretically propose and computationally demonstrate the generation of extended light-sheet for fluorescence microscopy. This is made possible by the introduction of a specially designed double-window spatial filter that allows the light to pass through the periphery and center of a cylindrical lens. When illuminated with a plane wave, the proposed filter results in an extended depth-of-focus along with side-lobes which are due to other interferences in the transverse focal plane. Computational studies show a maximum extension of light-sheet by 3.38 times for single photon excitation and 3.68 times for multiphoton excitation as compared to state-of-art single plane illumination microscopy system. This technique may facilitate the study of large biological specimens (such as Zebrafish embryo and tissue) with high spatial resolution and reduced photobleaching. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

In the present study, impedance and Raman spectroscopy are adopted to probe the nature and extent of disorder to correlate with transport properties in doped polypyrrole (PPy) thin-film devices, synthesized electrochemically at different temperatures. A comparative study of the impedance spectroscopy is performed on PPy devices by both experimental and simulation approach with varying extent of disorder. The impedance measurements of PPy devices are well described by introducing a constant phase element (CPE) (Q) in modified RQ circuit, which accounts for frequency dependence of dielectric response. However, for the PPy grown at lower temperature, an equivalent circuit consisting of two such RQ elements in series is used for successful modelling of the impedance results, which accounts for the depletion region near the electrode. Raman spectroscopy and the de-convoluted spectra are successfully studied to probe the variation in C=C bond stretching and distribution of conjugation length, which relates to disorder in PPy films and the interpretation is well correlated to the impedance results.

Glasses in the x(BaO-TiO2)-B2O3 (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 mol.) system were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. Thermal stability and glass-forming ability as determined by differential thermal analysis (DTA) were found to increase with increasing BaO-TiO2 (BT) content. However, there was no noticeable change in the glass transition temperature (T-g). This was attributed to the active participation of TiO2 in the network formation especially at higher BT contents via the conversion of the TiO6 structural units into TiO4 units, which increased the connectivity and resulted in an increase in crystallization temperature. Dielectric and optical properties at room temperature were studied for all the glasses under investigation. Interestingly, these glasses were found to be hydrophobic. The results obtained were correlated with different structural units and their connectivity in the glasses.

Super-resolution microscopy has tremendously progressed our understanding of cellular biophysics and biochemistry. Specifically, 4pi fluorescence microscopy technique stands out because of its axial super-resolution capability. All types of 4pi-microscopy techniques work well in conjugation with deconvolution techniques to get rid of artifacts due to side-lobes. In this regard, we propose a technique based on spatial filter in a 4pi-type-C confocal setup to get rid of these artifacts. Using a special spatial filter, we have reduced the depth-of-focus. Interference of two similar depth-of-focus beams in a 4 pi geometry result in substantial reduction of side-lobes. Studies show a reduction of side-lobes by 46% and 76% for single and two photon variant compared to 4pi - type - C confocal system. This is incredible considering the resolving capability of the existing 4pi - type - C confocal microscopy. Moreover, the main lobe is found to be 150 nm for the proposed spatial filtering technique as compared to 690 nm of the state-of-art confocal system. Reconstruction of experimentally obtained 2PE - 4pi data of green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged mitocondrial network shows near elimination of artifacts arising out of side-lobes. Proposed technique may find interesting application in fluorescence microscopy, nano-lithography, and cell biology. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

The detection efficiency of a GEM based UV sensitive gaseous photomultiplier (GPM) depends on the focusing of electrons from the drift gap to the GEM aperture. We have studied the effect of drift parameters on the efficiency of electron focusing into Thick GEM (THGEM) holes in a GPM with semitransparent UV photoconverter. This study comprises simulation of electron focusing into THGEM holes using GARFIELD for different Ar and Ne based gas mixtures and experimental investigations of the same with P10 gas mixture. We present computer simulation study of two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) of water confined in reverse micelles (RMs) of various sizes. The present study is motivated by the need to understand the altered dynamics of confined water by performing layerwise decomposition of water, with an aim to quantify the relative contributions of different layers water molecules to the calculated 2D-IR spectrum. The 0-1 transition spectra clearly show substantial elongation, due to in-homogeneous broadening and incomplete spectral diffusion, along the diagonal in the surface water layer of different sized RMs. Fitting of the frequency fluctuation correlation functions reveal that the motion of the surface water molecules is sub-diffusive and indicate the constrained nature of their dynamics. This is further supported by two peak nature of the angular analogue of van Hove correlation function. With increasing system size, the water molecules become more diffusive in nature and spectral diffusion almost completes in the central layer of the larger size RMs. Comparisons between experiments and simulations establish the correspondence between the spectral decomposition available in experiments with the spatial decomposition available in simulations. Simulations also allow a quantitative exploration of the relative role of water, sodium ions, and sulfonate head groups in vibrational dephasing. Interestingly, the negative cross correlation between force on oxygen and hydrogen of O-H bond in bulk water significantly decreases in the surface layer of each RM. This negative cross correlation gradually increases in the central water pool with increasing RMs size and this is found to be partly responsible for the faster relaxation rate of water in the central pool.
