The ability of a metal to resist strain localisation and hence reduction in local thickness, is a most important forming property upon stretching. The uniform strain represents in this regard a critical factor to describe stretching ability - especially when the material under consideration exhibits negative strain rate sensitivity and dynamic strain ageing (DSA). A newly developed Laser Speckle Technique (LST), e.g. see [1], was used in-situ during tensile testing with two extensometers. The applied technique facilitates quantitative information on the propagating plasticity (i.e. the so-called PLC bands) known to take place during deformation where DSA is active. The band velocity (V-band), and the bandwidth (W-band) were monitored upon increasing accumulated strain. The knowledge obtained with the LST was useful for understanding the underlying mechanisms for the formability limit when DSA and negative strain rate sensitivity operate. The goal was to understand the relationship between PLC/DSA phenomena and the formability limit physically manifested as shear band formation. Two principally different alloys were used to discover alloying effects.

Syntactic foams made by mechanical mixing of polymeric binder and hollow spherical particles are used as core materials in sandwich structured materials. Low density of such materials makes them suitable for weight sensitive applications. The present study correlates various postcompression microscopic observations in syntactic foams to the localized events leading the material to fracture. Depending upon local stress conditions the fracture features of syntactic foam are identified for various modes of fracture such as compressive, shear and tensile. Microscopic observations were also taken at sandwich structures containing syntactic foam as core materials and also at reinforced syntactic foam containing glass fibers. These observations provide conclusive evidences for the fracture features generated under different failure modes. All the microscopic observations were taken using scanning electron microscope in secondary electron mode. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Nanoclusters of bimetallic Pt-Ru are electrochemically deposited on conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT), which is also electrochemically deposited on a carbon paper substrate. The bimetallic deposition is carried out in an acidic electrolyte consisting of chloroplatinic acid and ruthenium chloride at 0.0 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE) on PEDOT coated carbon paper. A thin layer PEDOT on a carbon paper substrate facilitates the formation of uniform, well-dispersed, nano clusters of Pt-Ru of mean diameter of 123 nm, which consist of nanosize particles. In the absence of PEDOT, the size of the clusters is about 251 nm, which are unevenly distributed on carbon paper substrate. Cyclic voltammetry studies suggest that peak currents of methanol oxidation are several times greater on PtRu-PEDOT electrode than on Pt-Ru electrode in the absence of PEDOT. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of the solid solution Nd0.7Sr0.3Fe1-xCoxO3 for 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.8 were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic perovskite structure. The lattice parameters were determined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). The pseudo-cubic lattice constant decreased continuously with x. The average linear thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) in the temperature range from 573 to 973 K was found to increase with x. The thermal expansion curves for all values of x displayed rapid increase in slope at high temperatures. The electrical conductivity increased with x for the entire temperature range of measurement. The calculated activation energy values indicate that electrical conduction takes place primarily by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The charge compensation for the divalent ion on the A-site is provided by the formation of Fe4+ ions on the B-site (in preference to Co4+ ions) and vacancies on the oxygen sublattice for low values of x. The large increase in the conductivity with x in the range from 0.6 to 0.8 is attributed to the substitution of Fe4+ ions by Co4+ ions. The Fe site has a lower small polaron site energy than Co and hence behaves like a carrier trap, thereby drastically reducing the conductivity. The non-linear behaviour in the dependence of log sigmaT with reciprocal temperature can be attributed to the generation of additional charge carriers with increasing temperature by the charge disproportionation of Co3+ ions. Particulate reinforcements for polymers are selected with dual objective of improving composite properties and save on the total cost of the system. In the present study fly ash, an industrial waste with good properties is used as filler in epoxy and the compressive properties of such composites are studied. Particle surfaces are treated chemically using a silane-coupling agent to improve the compatibility with the matrix. The compressive properties of these are compared with those made of untreated fly ash particulates. Furthermore properties of fly ash composites with two different average particle sizes are first compared between themselves and then with those made using the as-received bimodal nature of particle size distribution. Microscopic observations of compression tested samples revealed a better adherence of the particles with the matrix in case of treated particles and regards the size effect the composites with lower average particle size showed improved strength at higher filler contents. Experimental values of strengths and modulii are compared with some of the theoretical models for composite properties. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
Electrical characterization of Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 thin films grown by pulsed laser ablation technique
Resumo:
In situ annealed thin films of ferroelectric Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 were deposited on platinum substrates by pulsed laser ablation technique. The as grown films were polycrystalline in nature without the evidence of any secondary phases. The polarization hysteresis loop confirmed the ferroelectricity, which was also cross-checked with the capacitance-voltage characteristics. The remnant polarization was about 5.9 muC cm(-2) at room temperature and the coercive field was 45 kV. There was a slight asymmetry in the hysteresis for different polarities, which was thought to be due to the work function differences of different electrodes. The dielectric constant was about 452 and was found to exhibit low frequency dispersion that increased with frequency, This was related to the space-charge polarization. The complex impedance was plotted and this exhibited a semicircular trace, and indicated an equivalent parallel R - C circuit within the sample. This was attributed to the grain response. The DC leakage current-voltage plot was consistent with the space-charge limited conduction theory, but showed some deviation, which was explained by assuming a Poole-Frenkel type conduction to be superimposed on to the usual space-charge controlled current. An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Eu - Pd - O at 1223 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 20 different compositions, and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Three ternary oxides, Eu4PdO7, Eu2PdO4, and Eu2Pd2O5, were identified. Liquid alloys and the intermetallic compounds EuPd2 and EuPd3 were found to be in equilibrium with EuO. The compound EuPd3 was also found to coexist separately with Eu3O4 and Eu2O3. The oxide phase in equilibrium with EuPd5 and Pd rich solid solution was Eu2O3. Based on the phase relations, four solid state cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of the three ternary oxides in the temperature range from 925 to 1350 K. Although three cells are sufficient to obtain the properties of the three compounds, the fourth cell was deployed to crosscheck the data. An advanced version of the solid state cell incorporating a buffer electrode with yttria stabilised zirconia solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode was used for high temperature thermodynamic measurements. Equations for the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the interoxide compounds from their component binary oxides Eu2O3 with C type structure and PdO have been established. Based on the thermodynamic information, isothermal chemical potential diagrams and isobaric phase diagrams for the system Eu - Pd - O have been developed.

A mathematical model has been developed for the gas carburising (diffusion) process using finite volume method. The computer simulation has been carried out for an industrial gas carburising process. The model's predictions are in good agreement with industrial experimental data and with data collected from the literature. A study of various mass transfer and diffusion coefficients has been carried out in order to suggest which correlations should be used for the gas carburising process. The model has been interfaced in a Windows environment using a graphical user interface. In this way, the model is extremely user friendly. The sensitivity analysis of various parameters such as initial carbon concentration in the specimen, carbon potential of the atmosphere, temperature of the process, etc. has been carried out using the model.

Because of the wide variety of projected applications of ultrapure nitrides in advanced technologies, there is interest in developing new cost-effective methods of synthesis. Explored in this study is the use of ammonia and hydrazine for the synthesis of nitrides from oxides, sulfides and chlorides. Even when the standard Gibbs energy change for the nitridation reactions involved are moderately positive, the reaction can be made to proceed by lowering the partial pressure of the product gas below its equilibrium value. Use of a metastable form of precursor in the nanometric size range is an alternative method to facilitate nitridation. Ellingham-Richardson-Jeffes diagrams are used for a panoramic presentation of the driving force for each set of reactions as a function of temperature. Oxides are the least promising precursors for nitride synthesis; sulfides offer a larger synthetic window for many useful nitrides such as BN, AlN, InN, VN, TiN, ThN and Si3N4. The standard Gibbs free energy changes for reactions involving chlorides with either ammonia or hydrazine are much more negative. Hydrazine is a more powerful nitriding agent than ammonia. The metastability of hydrazine requires that it be introduced into a reactor through a water-cooled lance. The use of volatile halides with ammonia or hydrazine offers the potential for synthesis of pure and doped nanocrystalline nitrides. Nitride thin films can also be prepared by suitable adaptations of the chloride route. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The mechanism of field induced phase switching in antiferroelectric lead zirconate and La-modified lead zirconate thin films has been analysed in terms of reversible and irreversible switching process under weak fields as a function of donor concentration. Extension of Rayleigh law of ferromagnetic materials to the present antiferroelectric and modified antiferroelectric compositions have clearly showed that origin of small signal dielectric permittivity is due to reversible domain wall motion. Rayleigh's constant, a measure of irreversible switching process, exhibited a slight increase with lower La3+ concentrations and followed by a gradual fall for higher concentration. This clearly illustrates that donor addition to antiferroelectric thin films controls the domain switching even under weak fields. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Wear experiments performed on steel disc with increasing load for monolithic MoSi2 of different densities and its composite with TiB2 showed three distinct wear regimes. The specimens exhibited severe wear rate below the lower and above the upper critical loads and mild wear in between the two critical loads. The increase in density of the monolith and the reinforcement of TiB2 were effective in reducing the coefficient of friction and the specific wear rate. The wear experiments have been performed in these three regimes (15, 50 and 75 N). The tribofilm formed on the pin surface was found to contain both pin and disc materials. The temperature of the pins during the sliding against EN-24 disc was calculated using one dimensional heat transfer equation at different loads for each composition. The composite experiences lower temperatures compared to the monoliths. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A systematic approach is developed for scaling analysis of momentum, heat and species conservation equations pertaining to the case of solidification of a binary mixture. The problem formulation and description of boundary conditions are kept fairly general, so that a large class of problems can be addressed. Analysis of the momentum equations coupled with phase change considerations leads to the establishment of an advection velocity scale. Analysis of the energy equation leads to an estimation of the solid layer thickness. Different regimes corresponding to different dominant modes of transport are simultaneously identified. A comparative study involving several cases of possible thermal boundary conditions is also performed. Finally, a scaling analysis of the species conservation equation is carried out, revealing the effect of a non-equilibrium solidification model on solute segregation and species distribution. It is shown that non-equilibrium effects result in an enhanced macrosegregation compared with the case of an equilibrium model. For the sake of assessment of the scaling analysis, the predictions are validated against corresponding computational results.

Nanoembedded lead-tin alloys in aluminum matrix were synthesized by rapid solidification processing. These melt-spun aluminum alloys were then investigated using XRD, EDX and TEM. The XRD study reveals that the melt-spun samples contain elemental aluminum, lead and tin. The TEM analysis shows that embedded particles in aluminium matrix have a distinct two-phase contrast of lead and tin. The lead and tin in these nanoalloys exhibit an orientation relationship with the matrix aluminum and with each other. DSC studies were conducted to reveal the melting and solidification characteristics of these embedded nanoalloys. DSC thermograms exhibit features of multiple solidification exotherms on thermal cycling, which can be attributed to sequential melting and solidification of lead and tin in the respective alloys.

The low thermal expansion ceramic system, Ca1-xSrxZr4P6O24, for the compositions with x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1 was synthesized by solid-state reaction. The sintering characteristics were ascertained by bulk density measurements. The fracture surface microstructure examined by scanning electron microscopy showed the average grain size of 2.47 mum for all the compositions. The thermal expansion data for these ceramic systems over the temperature range 25-800degreesC is reported. The sinterability of various solid solutions and the hysteresis in dilatometric behaviour are shown to be related to the crystallographic thermal expansion anisotropy. A steady increase in the amount of porosity and critical grain size with increase in x is suggested to explain the observed decrease in the hysteresis.

The influence of residual oxygen in nitrogen on the formation of AlN-Al matrix by reactive infiltration has been investigated. Increasing the oxygen content from 10 ppm upwards decreased the nitride content in the matrix from 64 to 6%, Based on the analysis of the availability of oxygen at the Al-melt/gas interface, three distinct scenarios have been proposed (i) at lowest values, oxygen does not interfere with either infiltration or nitridation reaction; (ii) at intermediate values, nitridation is suppressed, however infiltration continues; and (iii) at a critical upper value, the melt passivates without any infiltration. This phenomenon offers control of the AlN/Al ratio in the matrix and the possibility of creation of microstructural gradierits by the appropriate choice of gas mixtures.
