Herein we report the synthesis, characterization, and potential application of his (4- (7,9,10-triphenylfluoranthen-8-yl)pheny)sulfone (TPFDPSO2) and 2,8-bis (7,9,10-triphenylfluoranthen-8-yl) dibenzo b, d]-thiophene 5,5-dioxide (TPFDBTO2) as electron transport as well as light-emitting materials. These fluoranthene derivatives were synthesized by oxidation of their corresponding parent sulfide compounds, which were prepared via Diels-Alder reaction. These materials exhibit deep blue fluorescence emission in both solution and thin film, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), thermal and electrochemical stability over a wide potential range. Hole- and electron-only devices were fabricated to study the charge transport characteristics, and predominant electron transport property comparable with that of a well-known electron transport material, Alq(3), was observed. Furthermore, bilayer electroluminescent devices were fabricated utilizing these fluoranthene derivatives as electron transport as well as emitting layer, and device performance was compared with that of their parent sulfide molecules. The electroluminescence (EL) devices fabricated with these molecules displayed bright sky blue color emission and 5-fold improvement in external quantum efficiency (EQE) with respect to their parent compounds.

We report a systematic investigation of the temperature dependence of electron magnetic resonance (EMR) line width, intensity and resonance field for similar to 25 nm Nd0.65Ca0.35MnO3 (NCMO1), Nd0.65Ca0.35Mn0.94Cr0.06O3 (NCMO2) and Nd0.65Ca0.35Mn0.9Cr0.1O3 (NCMO3) nanoparticles prepared by sol-gel method. The EMR line widths for the three nano-samples differ significantly from one another below a temperature T (min) where the line width has a minimum. T (min) was found to be 130, 100 and 120 K for NCMO1, NCMO2 and NCMO3, respectively. Well above T (min) the line width values for the three samples are close to one another. The sharp upturn of EMR line width below T (min) is attributed to the formation of short range, ferromagnetically ordered clusters. Temperature dependence of EMR intensity shows a residual CO transition in NCMO1 and NCMO2 and a complete disappearance of it in NCMO3. The intensity undergoes significant increase below 120, 80 and 100 K for NCMO1, NCMO2 and NCMO3, respectively, indicating the onset of ferromagnetic transitions. The occurrence of ferromagnetic transition is further confirmed by magnetization hysteresis measurements. The decrease in T (C) in NCMO2 and NCMO3 compared to NCMO1 nanoparticles is understood to be due to the destruction of the double-exchange interaction by chromium doping. The resonance field decreases below the ferromagnetic onset temperatures for all the samples as expected. The combined effects of the reduction in size and of chromium doping in Mn site are discussed.

Melanosomes are a class of lysosome-related organelles produced by melanocytes. Biogenesis of melanosomes requires the transport of melanin-synthesizing enzymes from tubular recycling endosomes to maturing melanosomes. The SNARE proteins involved in these transport or fusion steps have been poorly studied. We found that depletion of syntaxin 13 (STX13, also known as STX12), a recycling endosomal Qa-SNARE, inhibits pigment granule maturation in melanocytes by rerouting the melanosomal proteins such as TYR and TYRP1 to lysosomes. Furthermore, live-cell imaging and electron microscopy studies showed that STX13 co-distributed with melanosomal cargo in the tubular-vesicular endosomes that are closely associated with the maturing melanosomes. STX family proteins contain an N-terminal regulatory domain, and deletion of this domain in STX13 increases both the SNARE activity in vivo and melanosome cargo transport and pigmentation, suggesting that STX13 acts as a fusion SNARE in melanosomal trafficking pathways. In addition, STX13-dependent cargo transport requires the melanosomal R-SNARE VAMP7, and its silencing blocks the melanosome maturation, reflecting a defect in endosome-melanosome fusion. Moreover, we show mutual dependency between STX13 and VAMP7 in regulating their localization for efficient cargo delivery to melanosomes.

AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor stacks deposited on a single growth platform are used to compare the most common transition, AlN to GaN, schemes used for integrating GaN with Si. The efficiency of these transitions based on linearly graded, step graded, interlayer, and superlattice schemes on dislocation density reduction, stress management, surface roughness, and eventually mobility of the 2D-gas are evaluated. In a 500 nm GaN probe layer deposited, all of these transitions result in total transmission electron microscopy measured dislocations densities of 1 to 3 x 10(9)/cm(2) and <1 nm surface roughness. The 2-D electron gas channels formed at an AlGaN-1 nm AlN/GaN interface deposited on this GaN probe layer all have mobilities of 1600-1900 cm(2)/V s at a carrier concentration of 0.7-0.9 x 10(13)/cm(2). Compressive stress and changes in composition in GaN rich regions of the AlN-GaN transition are the most effective at reducing dislocation density. Amongst all the transitions studied the step graded transition is the one that helps to implement this feature of GaN integration in the simplest and most consistent manner. Microwave plasma driven chemical vapour deposition was used to synthesize graphene nanosheets from a mixture of acetylene and hydrogen gas molecules. In this plasma, acetylene decomposes to carbon atoms that form nanostructures in the outlet plasma stream and get deposited on the substrate. The GNS consists of a few layers of graphene aligned vertically to the substrate. Graphene layers have been confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectral studies were conducted to observe the defective nature of the sample. The growth of nanosheets in a vertical direction is assumed to be due to the effect of electric field and from the difference in the deposition rate in the axial and parallel directions. These vertical graphene sheets are attractive for various applications in energy storage and sensors.

Nanoscale ordering in a polymer blend structure is indispensable to obtain materials with tailored properties. It was established here that controlling the arrangement of nanoparticles, with different characteristics, in co-continuous PC/PVDF (polycarbonate/poly(vinylidene fluoride)) blends can result in outstanding microwave absorption (ca. 90%). An excellent reflection loss (RL) of ca. -71 dB was obtained for a model blend structure wherein the conducting (multiwall carbon nanotubes, MWNTs) and the magnetic inclusions (Fe3O4) are localized in PVDF and the dielectric inclusion (barium titanate, BT) is in PC. The MWNTs were modified using polyaniline, which facilitates better charge transport in the blends. Furthermore, by introducing surface active groups on BT nanoparticles and changing the macroscopic processing conditions, the localization of BT nanoparticles can be tailored, otherwise BT nanoparticles would localize in the preferred phase (PVDF). In this study, we have shown that by ordered arrangement of nanoparticles, the incoming EM radiation can be attenuated. For instance, when PANI-MWNTs were localized in PVDF, the shielding was mainly through reflection. Now by localizing the conducting inclusion and the magnetic lossy materials in PVDF and the dielectric materials in PC, an outstanding shielding effectiveness of ca. -37 dB was achieved where shielding was mainly through absorption (ca. 90%). Thus, this study clearly demonstrates that lightweight microwave absorbers can be designed using polymer blends as a tool.

Selective and discriminative detection of -NO2 containing high energy organic compounds such as picric acid (PA), 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and dinitrotoluene (DNT) has become a challenging task due to concerns over national security, criminal investigations and environment protections. Among various known detection methods, fluorescence techniques have gained special attention in recent time. A wide variety of fluorescent chemosensors have been developed for nitroaromatic explosive detection. In this review article, we provide an overview of the recent developments made in small molecule-based turn-off fluorescent sensors for nitroaromatic explosives with special focus on organic and H-bonded supramolecular sensors. The fluorescent sensors discussed in this review are classified and organized according to their functionality and their recognition of nitroaromatics by fluorescence quenching.

This work provides a methodology for synthesizing isolated multi-component, high entropy alloy nanoparticles. Wet chemical synthesis technique was used to synthesis NiFeCrCuCo nanoparticles. As synthesized nanoparticles were spherical with an average size of 26.7 +/- 3.3 nm. Average composition of the as-synthesized nanoparticle dispersion was 26 +/- 2 at% Cr, 14 +/- 2 at% Fe, 10 +/- 0.6 at% Co, 25 +/- 0.1 at% Ni and 25 +/- 1.1 at% Cu. Compositional analysis of the nanoparticles conducted using the compositional line profile analysis and compositional mapping on a single nanoparticle level revealed a fairly uniform distribution of all the five component elements within the nanoparticle volume. Electron diffraction analysis clearly revealed that the structure of as-synthesized nanoparticles was face centered cubic. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In one dimension, noninteracting particles can undergo a localization-delocalization transition in a quasiperiodic potential. Recent studies have suggested that this transition transforms into a many-body localization (MBL) transition upon the introduction of interactions. It has also been shown that mobility edges can appear in the single particle spectrum for certain types of quasiperiodic potentials. Here, we investigate the effect of interactions in two models with such mobility edges. Employing the technique of exact diagonalization for finite-sized systems, we calculate the level spacing distribution, time evolution of entanglement entropy, optical conductivity, and return probability to detect MBL. We find that MBL does indeed occur in one of the two models we study, but the entanglement appears to grow faster than logarithmically with time unlike in other MBL systems.

Multiferroic Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 ceramics were synthesized via a modified two-stage Columbite method. Single phase formation was confirmed from the analysis of x-ray and neutron diffraction patterns recorded at room temperature. Structural analysis of the diffraction data reveals cubic phase (space group Pm-3m) for the title compound. Magnetic structure of the title compound at room temperature exhibits G-type antiferromagnetic structure. The Mossbauer spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) studies were carried out at 300 K. The isomer shift and quadrupole splitting of the Mossbauer spectra confirms the trivalent state of iron (Fe3+). The Mossbauer spectra also suggest that the iron and tungsten are randomly distributed at the octahedral, B site. EPR spectra show a single broad line associated with Fe3+ ions. Both spectra clearly exhibit weak ferromagnetic behaviour of Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 ceramic at 300 K. Considering neutron diffraction, Mossbauer and EPR results together, it may be stated here that Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 exhibits antiferromagnetic behavior along with weak ferromagnetism at room temperature.

We present results for electron beam welding of a binary Ti/Ni dissimilar metal couple. The difference in physical properties of the base metals and metallurgical features (thermodynamics and kinetics) of the system influence both macroscopic transport and microstructure development in the weld. Microstructures near the fusion interfaces are markedly different from those inside the weld region. At the Ti side, Ti2Ni dendrites are observed to grow toward the fusion interface, while in the Ni side, layered growth of gamma-Ni, Ni3Ti, and Ni3Ti + NiTi eutectic is observed. Different morphologies of the latter eutectic constitute the predominant microstructure inside the weld metal region. These results are compared and contrasted with those from laser welding of the same binary couple, and a scheme of solidification is proposed to explain the observations. This highlights notable departures from welding of similar and other dissimilar metals such as a significant asymmetry in heat transport that governs progress of solidification from each side of the couple, and a lack of unique liquidus isotherm characterizing the liquid-solid front.

An iron(III) salicylate having a dipicolylamine base (andpa) with a photoactive anthracenyl moiety is prepared, characterized, and studied for its photo-induced anticancer activity and cellular localization in HeLa and MCF-7 cells. Its phenyl analogue is structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complex has a ternary structure in which the dipicolylamine ligand and salicylic acid in dianionic form (sal) display respective tridentate and bidentate mode of coordination in Fe(sal)(phdpa)Cl] (1). Complex Fe(sal)(andpa)Cl] (2) having a pendant anthracenyl moiety shows significant photocytotoxicity in visible light (400-700 nm) giving IC50 values of 8.6 +/- 0.7 and 3.4 +/- 0.9 mu M in HeLa and MCF-7 cells, while being essentially nontoxic in the dark (IC50 > 100 mu M). The complex shows cytosolic localization in the cancer cells. Formation of hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) as the reactive oxygen species is evidenced from the pUC19 DNA photocleavage studies. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) adaptation to hypoxia is considered crucial to its prolonged latent persistence in humans. Mtb lesions are known to contain physiologically heterogeneous microenvironments that bring about differential responses from bacteria. Here we exploit metabolic variability within biofilm cells to identify alternate respiratory polyketide quinones (PkQs) from both Mycobacterium smegmatis (Msmeg) and Mtb. PkQs are specifically expressed in biofilms and other oxygen-deficient niches to maintain cellular bioenergetics. Under such conditions, these metabolites function as mobile electron carriers in the respiratory electron transport chain. In the absence of PkQs, mycobacteria escape from the hypoxic core of biofilms and prefer oxygenrich conditions. Unlike the ubiquitous isoprenoid pathway for the biosynthesis of respiratory quinones, PkQs are produced by type III polyketide synthases using fatty acyl-CoA precursors. The biosynthetic pathway is conserved in several other bacterial genomes, and our study reveals a redox-balancing chemicocellular process in microbial physiology.

We report the magnetic-field-dependent shift of the electron chemical potential in bulk, n-type GaAs at room temperature. A transient voltage of similar to 100 mu V was measured across a Au-Al2O3-GaAs metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor in a pulsed magnetic field of similar to 6 T. Several spurious voltages larger than the signal that had plagued earlier researchers performing similar experiments were carefully eliminated. The itinerant magnetic susceptibility of GaAs is extracted from the experimentally measured data for four different doping densities, including one as low as 5 x 10(15) cm(-3). Though the susceptibility in GaAs is dominated by Landau-Peierls diamagnetism, the experimental technique demonstrated can be a powerful tool for extracting the total free carrier magnetization of any electron system. The method is also virtually independent of the carrier concentration and is expected to work better in the nondegenerate limit. Such experiments had been successfully performed in two-dimensional electron gases at cryogenic temperatures. However, an unambiguous report on having observed this effect in any three-dimensional electron gas has been lacking. We highlight the 50 year old literature of various trials and discuss the key details of our experiment that were essential for its success. The technique can be used to unambiguously yield only the itinerant part of the magnetic susceptibility of complex materials such as magnetic semiconductors and hexaborides, and thus shed light on the origin of ferromagnetism in such systems.

We propose clean localization microscopy (a variant of fPALM) using a molecule filtering technique. Localization imaging involves acquiring a large number of images containing single molecule signatures followed by one-to-one mapping to render a super-resolution image. In principle, this process can be repeated for other z-planes to construct a 3D image. But, single molecules observed from off-focal planes result in false representation of their presence in the focal plane, resulting in incorrect quantification and analysis. We overcome this with a single molecule filtering technique that imposes constraints on the diffraction limited spot size of single molecules in the image plane. Calibration with sub-diffraction size beads puts a natural cutoff on the actual diffraction-limited size of single molecules in the focal plane. This helps in distinguishing beads present in the focal plane from those in the off-focal planes thereby providing an estimate of the single molecules in the focal plane. We study the distribution of actin (labeled with a photoactivatable CAGE 552 dye) in NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblast cells. (C) 2016 Author(s).
