Chemical doping of graphene becomes necessary to create a band gap which is useful for various applications. Furthermore, chemical doping of elements like boron and nitrogen in graphene gives rise to useful properties. Since chemically doped graphene is both of academic and technical importance, we have prepared this article on the present status of various aspects of this important class of materials. In doing so, we have covered the recent literature on this subject citing all the major references. Some of the aspects that we have covered are the synthesis of chemically doped graphene followed by properties and applications. The applications discussed relate to gas adsorption, lithium batteries, supercapacitors, oxygen reduction reaction, field emission and photochemical water splitting. Characterization of chemically doped graphene also included. We believe that the article will be useful to all those interested in graphene and related materials and provides the present status of the subject. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of hydrogen (H) charging on the shear yield strength (tau(max)) and shear transformation zone volume (Omega) of Ni-Nb-Zr metallic glass ribbons, with varying Zr content, were studied through the first pop-in loads during nanoindentation. Weight gain measurements after H charging and desorption studies were utilized to identify how the total H absorbed during charging is partitioned into mobile and immobile (or trapped) parts. These, in turn, indicate the significant role of H mobility in the amorphous structure on the yielding behavior. In high-Zr alloys, tau(max) increases significantly whereas Omega decreases. In low-Zr alloys, a slight decrease in tau(max) and increase in Omega were noted. These experimental observations are rationalized in terms of the mobility of the absorbed H in the amorphous structure and the possible role of it in the shear transformation zone dynamics during deformation of the metallic glass. Colloidal systems with competing interactions are known to exhibit a range of dynamically arrested states because of the systems' inability to reach its underlying equilibrium state due to intrinsic frustration. Graphene oxide (GO) aqueous dispersions constitute a class of 2D-anisotropic colloids with competing interactions long-range electrostatic repulsion, originating from ionized groups located on the rim of the sheets, and weak dispersive attractive interactions originating from the unoxidized graphitic domains. We show here that aqueous dispersions of GO exhibit a range of arrested states, encompassing fluid, glass, and gels that coexist with liquid-crystalline order with increasing volume fraction. These states can be accessed by varying the relative magnitudes of the repulsive and attractive forces. This can be realized by changing the ionic strength of the medium. We observe at low salt concentrations, where long-range electrostatic repulsion dominates, the formation of a repulsive Wigner glass, while at high salt concentrations, when attractive forces dominate, the formation of gels exhibits a nematic to columnar liquid-crystalline transition. The present work highlights how the chemical structure of GO hydrophilic ionizable groups and hydrophobic graphitic domains coexisting on a single sheet gives rise to a rich and complex array of arrested states.

Lead telluride (PbTe) is an established thermoelectric material which can be alloyed with sulphur and selenium to further enhance the thermoelectric properties. Here, a first principles study of ternary alloys PbSxTe(1-x) and PbSexTe(1-x) (0 <= x <= 1) based on the Virtual Crystal Approximation (VCA) is presented for different ratios of the isoelectronic atoms in each series. Equilibrium lattice parameters and elastic constants have been calculated and compared with the reported data. Anisotropy parameter calculated from the stiffness constants showed a slight improvement in anisotropy of elastic properties of the alloys over undoped PbTe. Furthermore, the alloys satisfied the predicted stability criteria from the elastic constants, showing stable structures, which agreed with the previously reported experimental results.

A systematic study of Raman spectra on Yttrium doped NdMnO3 polycrystalline samples was undertaken to understand the lattice dynamics in this compound. Raman active phonons were analyzed and the observed peak were assigned to elucidate various phonon modes in the range (200 - 800) cm(-1). It was observed that at 325 cm(-1) phonon frequency shifts upward as much as upto 4 % with increase in Yttrium content. Lattice distortions manifest themselves by frequency shifts in both bending and tilt modes of MnO6 octahedra, resulting in increase of Raman band line-widths.

The complex perovskite oxide SrRuO3 shows intriguing transport properties at low temperatures due to the interplay of spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom. One of the open questions in this system is regarding the origin and nature of the low-temperature glassy state. In this paper we report on measurements of higher-order statistics of resistance fluctuations performed in epitaxial thin films of SrRuO3 to probe this issue. We observe large low-frequency non-Gaussian resistance fluctuations over a certain temperature range. Our observations are compatible with that of a spin-glass system with properties described by hierarchical dynamics rather than with that of a simple ferromagnet with a large coercivity.

Retaining the morphology of gallium oxide nanostructures during structural transformations or after doping with lanthanide ions is not facile. Here we report on the sonochemical synthesis of nearly monodisperse similar to 550 nm long nano-spindles of undoped and La-doped alpha-GaOOH. The transformation of as-prepared undoped and La-doped alpha-GaOOH powders into the corresponding undoped and La-doped Ga2O3 phases (alpha and beta) was achieved by carrying out controlled annealing at elevated temperatures under optimized conditions. The formation of gallium oxide nano-spindles is explained by invoking the phenomenon of oriented attachment, as amply supported by electron microscopy. Interestingly, the morphology of the gallium oxide nano-spindles remained conserved even after doping them with more than 1.4 at% of La3+ ions. Such robust structural stability could be attributed to the oriented attachment-type growth observed in the nano-spindles. The as-prepared samples and the corresponding annealed ones were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, and STEM-EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, photoluminescence from the single-crystalline undoped and La-doped beta-Ga2O3 was explored.

Mode I fracture experiments were conducted on brittle bulk metallic glass (BMG) samples and the fracture surface features were analyzed in detail to understand the underlying physical processes. Wollner lines, which result from the interaction between the propagating crack front and shear waves emanating from a secondary source, were observed on the fracture surface and geometric analysis of them indicates that the maximum crack velocity is similar to 800 m s(-1), which corresponds to similar to 0.32 times the shear wave speed. Fractography reveals that the sharp crack nucleation at the notch tip occurs at the mid-section of the specimens with the observation of flat and half-penny-shaped cracks. On this basis, we conclude that the crack initiation in brittle BMGs is stress-controlled and occurs through hydrostatic stress-assisted cavity nucleation ahead of the notch tip. High magnification scanning electron and atomic force microscopies of the dynamic crack growth regions reveal highly organized, nanoscale periodic patterns with a spacing of similar to 79 nm. Juxtaposition of the crack velocity with this spacing suggests that the crack takes similar to 10(-10) s for peak-to-peak propagation. This, and the estimated adiabatic temperature rise ahead of the propagating crack tip that suggests local softening, is utilized to critically discuss possible causes for the nanocorrugation formation. Taylor's fluid meniscus instability is unequivocally ruled out. Then, two other possible mechanisms, viz. (a) crack tip blunting and resharpening through nanovoid nucleation and growth ahead of the crack tip and eventual coalescence, and (b) dynamic oscillation of the crack in a thin slab of softened zone ahead of the crack-tip, are critically discussed. The temperature (300-973K) and frequency (100Hz-10MHz) response of the dielectric and impedance characteristics of 2BaO-0.5Na(2)O-2.5Nb(2)O(5)-4.5B(2)O(3) glasses and glass nanocrystal composites were studied. The dielectric constant of the glass was found to be almost independent of frequency (100Hz-10MHz) and temperature (300-600K). The temperature coefficient of dielectric constant was 8 +/- 3ppm/K in the 300-600K temperature range. The relaxation and conduction phenomena were rationalized using modulus formalism and universal AC conductivity exponential power law, respectively. The observed relaxation behavior was found to be thermally activated. The complex impedance data were fitted using the least square method. Dispersion of Barium Sodium Niobate (BNN) phase at nanoscale in a glass matrix resulted in the formation of space charge around crystal-glass interface, leading to a high value of effective dielectric constant especially for the samples heat-treated at higher temperatures. The fabricated glass nanocrystal composites exhibited P versus E hysteresis loops at room temperature and the remnant polarization (P-r) increased with the increase in crystallite size.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) and silver doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Ag) nanoparticles were prepared using nitrates of zinc and silver as oxidizers and ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a fuel via low-temperature combustion synthesis (LCS) at 500 degrees C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates the presence of silver in the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum indicates the presence of Ag-Zn-O stretching vibration at 510 cm(-1). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images shows that the average particle size of ZnO and ZnO:Ag nanoparticles were found to be 58 nm and 52 nm, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data clearly indicates the presence of Ag in ZnO crystal lattice. The above characterization techniques indicate that the incorporation of silver affects the structural and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles. ZnO:Ag nanoparticles exhibited 3% higher photocatalytic efficiency than pure ZnO nanoparticles. ZnO:Ag nanoparticles show better photocatalytic activity for the degradation of trypan blue (TrB) compared to undoped ZnO nanoparticles. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electric field activated charge transport is studied in the metal/polymer/metal device structure of electropolymerized polypyrrole down to 10 K with varying carrier density and disorder. Disorder induced nonlinear behaviour is observed in polypyrrole devices grown at room temperature which is correlated to delocalization of states. The slope parameter of currentvoltage characteristics (in log-log scale) increases as the temperature decreases, which indicates the onset of stronger field dependence. The field dependence of mobility becomes dominant as the carrier density decreases. The sharp dip in differential conductance indicates the localization of carriers at low temperatures which reduces the effective number of carriers involved in the transport.

Doubly (Sn + F) doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Sn:F) thin films were deposited onto glass substrates using a simplified spray pyrolysis technique. The deposited films were annealed at 400 degrees C under two different ambiences (air and vacuum) for 2 h. The photocatalytic activity of these films was assessed through photocatalytic decolorization kinetics of Methylene Blue (MB) dye and the decolorization efficiency of the annealed films was compared with that of their as-deposited counterpart. The photocatalytic studies reveal that the ZnO:Sn:F films annealed under vacuum environment exhibits better photocatalytic efficiency when compared with both air annealed and as-deposited films. The SEM and TEM images depict that the surface of each of the films has an overlayer comprising of nanobars formed on a bottom layer, having spherical grains. The studies show that the diameter of the nanobars plays crucial role in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO:Sn:F films. The structural, optical and electrical studies substantiate the discussions on the photocatalytic ability of the deposited films. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Undoped and Sn-doped WO3 thin films were grown on cleaned glass substrates by chemical spray pyrolysis, using ammonium tungstate (NH4)(2)WO4 as the host precursor and tin chloride (SnCl4 center dot 5H(2)O) as the source of dopant. The XRD spectra confirm the monoclinic structure with a sharp narrow peak along (200) direction along with other peaks of low relative intensities for all the samples. On Sn doping, the films exhibit reduced crystallinity relative to the undoped film. The standard deviation for relative peak intensity with dopant concentration shows enhancement in heterogeneous nucleation growth. As evident from SEM images, on Sn doping, appearance of island-like structure (i.e., cluster of primary crystallites at few places) takes place. The transmittance has been found to decrease in all the Sn-doped films. The optical band gap has been calculated for both direct and indirect transitions. On Sn doping, the direct band gap shows a red shift and becomes 2.89 eV at 2 at.% doping. Two distinct peaks, one blue emission at 408 nm and other green emission at 533 nm, have been found in the PL spectra. Electrical conductivity has been found to increase with Sn doping.

SrCrxFe12-xO19 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9) hexaferrites were prepared by a microwave-hydrothermal method and subsequently sintered at 950 degrees C for 90 min using the microwave sintering method. The results show that, with increasing Cr3+ content, the lattice parameters changed anisotropically. The average grain sizes of sintered samples were in the range of 280 nm to 660 nm. The saturation magnetization systematically decreased with increasing Cr3+ doping, but the coercivity values increased. The electrical resistivity (log rho) decreased linearly with increasing temperature up to a certain temperature known as the transition temperature (T-c), and T-c decreased with further increase (x>0.5) of the Cr3+ content. This decrease in log rho and the activation energy (E-g) is due to electron hopping and occupancy of doped ions at different lattice sites. We found that the dielectric constant and dielectric loss for all the samples decreased with the Cr3+ content. The structural, magnetic, and electrical properties of Cr3+-doped SrFe12O19 hexaferrites have thus been investigated.

Amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) alloy, upon heating crystallize to a metastable NaCl structure around 150 degrees C and then to a stable hexagonal structure at high temperatures (>= 250 degrees C). It has been generally understood that the phase change takes place between amorphous and the metastable NaCl structure and not between the amorphous and the stable hexagonal phase. In the present work, it is observed that the thermally evaporated (GST)(1-x)Se-x thin films (0 <= x <= 0.50) crystallize directly to the stable hexagonal structure for x >= 0.10, when annealed at temperatures >= 150 degrees C. The intermediate NaCl structure has been observed only for x, 0.10. Chemically ordered network of GST is largely modified for x >= 0.10. Resistance, thermal stability and threshold voltage of the films are found to increase with the increase of Se. The contrast in electrical resistivity between the amorphous and crystalline phases is about 6 orders of magnitude. The increase in Se shifts the absorption edge to lower wavelength and the band gap widens from 0.63 to 1.05 eV. Higher resistance ratio, higher crystallization temperature, direct transition to the stable phase indicate that (GST)(1-x)Se-x films are better candidates for phase change memory applications.
