The quantum statistical mechanical propagator for a harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent force constant, m omega(2)(t), has been investigated in the past and was found to have only a formal solution in terms of the solutions of certain ordinary differential equations. Such path integrals are frequently encountered in semiclassical path integral evaluations and having exact analytical expressions for such path integrals is of great interest. In a previous work, we had obtained the exact propagator for motion in an arbitrary time-dependent harmonic potential in the overdamped limit of friction using phase space path integrals in the context of Levy flights - a result that can be easily extended to Brownian motion. In this paper, we make a connection between the overdamped Brownian motion and the imaginary time propagator of quantum mechanics and thereby get yet another way to evaluate the latter exactly. We find that explicit analytic solution for the quantum statistical mechanical propagator can be written when the time-dependent force constant has the form omega(2)(t) = lambda(2)(t) - d lambda(t)/dt where lambda(t) is any arbitrary function of t and use it to evaluate path integrals which have not been evaluated previously. We also employ this method to arrive at a formal solution of the propagator for both Levy flights and Brownian subjected to a time-dependent harmonic potential in the underdamped limit of friction. We report the origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties of Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O-3 (PFN) ceramic sample prepared by modified solid-state reaction synthesis by a single-step method, based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron diffraction (ND), Mossbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy results. Formation of single-phase monoclinic PFN ceramic with Cm space group was confirmed by XRD and ND at RT. The morphology studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed uniform microstructure of the sample with average grain size of similar to 2 mu m. The ND, Mossbauer spectroscopy, M-H loop and EPR studies were carried out to confirm the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. A clear opening of hysteresis (M-H) loop is evidenced as the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. EPR spectrum clearly shows the ferromagnetism through a good resonance signal. The symmetric EPR line shape with g = 1.9895 observed in PFN sample was identified to be due to Fe3+ ions. Mossbauer spectroscopy at RT shows superparamagnetic behaviour with presence of Fe in 3+ valence state. Ferroelectric P-E loops on PFN at RT confirm the existing ferroelectric ordering. Our observation is in agreement with literature, and it supports that the origin of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is isolated, i.e. from different regions in the sample. Our results do not support the multiferroic nature of PFN at RT.

This paper proposes a technique to suppress low-order harmonics for an open-end winding induction motor drive for a full modulation range. One side of the machine is connected to a main inverter with a dc power supply, whereas the other inverter is connected to a capacitor from the other side. Harmonic suppression (with complete elimination of fifth- and seventh-order harmonics) is achieved by realizing dodecagonal space vectors using a combined pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control for the two inverters. The floating capacitor voltage is inherently controlled during the PWM operation. The proposed PWM technique is shown to be valid for the entire modulation range, including overmodulation and six-step mode of operation of the main inverter. Experimental results have been presented to validate the proposed technique.

In this article, we study risk-sensitive control problem with controlled continuous time Markov chain state dynamics. Using multiplicative dynamic programming principle along with the atomic structure of the state dynamics, we prove the existence and a characterization of optimal risk-sensitive control under geometric ergodicity of the state dynamics along with a smallness condition on the running cost.

The set of all subspaces of F-q(n) is denoted by P-q(n). The subspace distance d(S)(X, Y) = dim(X) + dim(Y)-2dim(X boolean AND Y) defined on P-q(n) turns it into a natural coding space for error correction in random network coding. A subset of P-q(n) is called a code and the subspaces that belong to the code are called codewords. Motivated by classical coding theory, a linear coding structure can be imposed on a subset of P-q(n). Braun et al. conjectured that the largest cardinality of a linear code, that contains F-q(n), is 2(n). In this paper, we prove this conjecture and characterize the maximal linear codes that contain F-q(n).

The ultimate bearing capacity of a circular footing, placed over rock mass, is evaluated by using the lower bound theorem of the limit analysis in conjunction with finite elements and nonlinear optimization. The generalized Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criterion, but by keeping a constant value of the exponent, alpha = 0.5, was used. The failure criterion was smoothened both in the meridian and pi planes. The nonlinear optimization was carried out by employing an interior point method based on the logarithmic barrier function. The results for the obtained bearing capacity were presented in a non-dimensional form for different values of GSI, m(i), sigma(ci)/(gamma b) and q/sigma(ci). Failure patterns were also examined for a few cases. For validating the results, computations were also performed for a strip footing as well. The results obtained from the analysis compare well with the data reported in literature. Since the equilibrium conditions are precisely satisfied only at the centroids of the elements, not everywhere in the domain, the obtained lower bound solution will be approximate not true. In this paper, a multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure with nineteen concentric dodecagons is proposed for the first time. This space vector structure is achieved by cascading two sets of asymmetric three-level inverters with isolated H-bridges on either side of an open-end winding induction motor. The dodecagonal structure is made possible by proper selection of dc link voltages and switching states of the inverters. The proposed scheme retains all the advantages of multilevel topologies as well as the advantages of dodecagonal voltage space vector structure. In addition to that, a generic and simple method for calculation of pulsewidth modulation timings using only sampled reference values (v(alpha) and v(beta)) is proposed. This enables the scheme to be used for any closed-loop application such as vector control. In addition, a new method of switching technique is proposed, which ensures minimum switching while eliminating the fifth-and seventh-order harmonics and suppressing the eleventh and thirteenth harmonics, eliminating the need for bulky filters. The motor phase voltage is a 24-stepped wave-form for the entire modulation range thereby reducing the number of switchings of the individual inverter modules. Experimental results for steady-state operation, transient operation, including start-up have been presented and the results of fast Fourier transform analysis is also presented for validating the proposed concept.

The voltage ripple and power loss in the DC-capacitor of a voltage source inverter depend on the harmonic currents flowing through the capacitor. This paper presents a double Fourier series based analysis of the harmonic contents of the DC capacitor current in a three-level neutral-point clamped (NPC) inverter, modulated with sine-triangle pulse-width modulation (SPWM) or conventional space vector pulse-width modulation (CSVPWM) schemes. The analytical results are validated experimentally on a 3-kVA three-level inverter prototype. The capacitor current in an NPC inverter has a periodicity of 120(a similar to) at the fundamental or modulation frequency. Hence, this current contains third-harmonic and triplen-frequency components, apart from switching frequency components. The harmonic components vary with modulation index and power factor for both PWM schemes. The third harmonic current decreases with increase in modulation index and also decreases with increase in power factor in case of both PWM methods. In general, the third harmonic content is higher with SPWM than with CSVPWM at a given operating condition. Also, power loss and voltage ripple in the DC capacitor are estimated for both the schemes using the current harmonic spectrum and equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the capacitor.

The carrier density dependent current-voltage (J V) characteristics of electrochemically prepared poly(3-methylthiophene) (P3MeT) have been investigated in Pt/P3MeT/Al devices, as a function of temperature from 280 to 84 K. In these devices, the charge transport is found to be mainly governed by different transport regimes of space charge limited conduction (SCLC). In a lightly doped device, SCLC controlled by exponentially distributed traps (Vl+1 law, l > 1) is observed in the intermediate voltage range (0.5-2 V) at all temperatures. However, at higher bias (> 2 V), the current deviates from the usual Vl+1 law where the slope is found to be less than 2 of the logJ-logV plot, which is attributed to the presence of the injection barrier. These deviations gradually disappear at higher doping level due to reduction in the injection barrier. Numerical simulations of the Vl+1 law by introducing the injection barrier show good agreement with experimental data. The results show that carrier density can tune the charge transport mechanism in Pt/P3MeT/Al devices to understand the non-Ohmic behavior. The plausible reasons for the origin of injection barrier and the transitions in the transport mechanism with carrier density are discussed. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Biomolecular recognition underlying drug-target interactions is determined by both binding affinity and specificity. Whilst, quantification of binding efficacy is possible, determining specificity remains a challenge, as it requires affinity data for multiple targets with the same ligand dataset. Thus, understanding the interaction space by mapping the target space to model its complementary chemical space through computational techniques are desirable. In this study, active site architecture of FabD drug target in two apicomplexan parasites viz. Plasmodium falciparum (PfFabD) and Toxoplasma gondii (TgFabD) is explored, followed by consensus docking calculations and identification of fifteen best hit compounds, most of which are found to be derivatives of natural products. Subsequently, machine learning techniques were applied on molecular descriptors of six FabD homologs and sixty ligands to induce distinct multivariate partial-least square models. The biological space of FabD mapped by the various chemical entities explain their interaction space in general. It also highlights the selective variations in FabD of apicomplexan parasites with that of the host. Furthermore, chemometric models revealed the principal chemical scaffolds in PfFabD and TgFabD as pyrrolidines and imidazoles, respectively, which render target specificity and improve binding affinity in combination with other functional descriptors conducive for the design and optimization of the leads.

The derivation of a quasi-geostrophic system from the rotating shallow-water equations on a midlatitude -plane coupled with moisture is presented. Condensation is prescribed to occur whenever the moisture at a point exceeds a prescribed saturation value. It is seen that a slow condensation time-scale is required to obtain a consistent set of equations at leading order. Further, since the advecting wind fields are geostrophic, changes in moisture (and hence precipitation) occur only via non-divergent mechanisms. Following observations, a saturation profile with gradients in the zonal and meridional directions is prescribed. A purely meridional gradient has the effect of slowing down the dry Rossby waves, through a reduction in the equivalent gradient' of the background potential vorticity. A large-scale unstable moist mode results on the inclusion of a zonal gradient by itself, or in conjunction with a meridional moisture gradient. For gradients that are are representative of the atmosphere, the most unstable moist mode propagates zonally in the direction of increasing moisture, matures over an intraseasonal time-scale and has small phase speed.

A discussion has been provided for the comments raised by the discusser (Clausen, 2015)1] on the article recently published by the authors (Chakraborty and Kumar, 2015). The effect of exponent alpha for values of GSI approximately smaller than 30 becomes more critical. On the other hand, for greater values of GSI, the results obtained by the authors earlier remain primarily independent of alpha and can be easily used. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Multilevel inverters with dodecagonal (12-sided polygon) voltage space vector (SV) structures have advantages like extension of linear modulation range, elimination of fifth and seventh harmonics in phase voltages and currents for the full modulation range including extreme 12-step operation, reduced device voltage ratings, lesser dv/dt stresses on devices and motor phase windings resulting in lower EMI/EMC problems, and lower switching frequency-making it more suitable for high-power drive applications. This paper proposes a simple method to obtain pulsewidth modulation (PWM) timings for a dodecagonal voltage SV structure using only sampled reference voltages. In addition to this, a carrier-based method for obtaining the PWM timings for a general N-level dodecagonal structure is proposed in this paper for the first time. The algorithm outputs the triangle information and the PWM timing values which can be set as the compare values for any carrier-based hardware PWM module to obtain SV PWM like switching sequences. The proposed method eliminates the need for angle estimation, computation of modulation indices, and iterative search algorithms that are typical in multilevel dodecagonal SV systems. The proposed PWM scheme was implemented on a five-level dodecagonal SV structure. Exhaustive simulation and experimental results for steady-state and transient conditions are presented to validate the proposed method.

Iron(III) catecholates Fe(R-bpa)(R-dopa)Cl] (1, 2) with a triphenylphosphonium (TPP) moiety, where R-bpa is 2-(TPP-N,N-bis((pyridin-2-yl)methyl)ethanamine) chloride (TPPbpa) and R-dopa is 4-{2-(anthracen-9-yl)methylamino]ethyl}benzene-1,2-diol (andopa, 1) or 4-{2-(pyren-1-yl)-methylamino]ethyl}benzene-1,2-diol (pydopa, 2), were synthesized and their photocytotoxicity studied. Complexes 3 and 4 with phenyl-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]methanamine (phbpa) were used as controls. The catecholate complexes showed an absorption band near 720 nm. The 5e(-) paramagnetic complexes showed a Fe-III/Fe-II irreversible response near -0.45 V and a quasi-reversible catechol/semiquinone couple near 0.5 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE) in DMF/0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate. They showed photocytotoxicity in red/visible light in HeLa, HaCaT, MCF-7, and A549 cells. Complexes 1 and 2 displayed mitochondrial localization, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation under red light, and apoptotic cell death. Control complexes 3 and 4 exhibited uniform distribution throughout the cell. The complexes showed DNA photocleavage under red light (785 nm), forming hydroxyl radicals as the ROS.
