Phase equilibria of the system Ca-Ta-O is established by equilibrating eleven samples at 1200 K for prolonged periods and phase identification in quenched samples by optical and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Four ternary oxides are identified: CaTa4O11, CaTa2O6, Ca2Ta2O7 and Ca4Ta2O9. Isothermal section of the phase diagram is composed using the results. Thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides are measured in the temperature range from 975 to 1275 K employing solid-state galvanic cells incorporating single crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The cells essentially measure the chemical potentials of CaO in two-phase fields (Ta2O5 + CaTa4O11), (CaTa4O11 + CaTa2O6), (CaTa2O6 + Ca2Ta2O7), and (Ca2Ta2O7 + Ca4Ta2O9) of the pseudo-binary system CaO-Ta2O5. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of the four ternary oxides from their component binary oxides Ta2O5 and CaO are given by: Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (CaTa4O11) (+/- 482)/J mol(-1) = -58644+21.497 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (CaTa2O6) (+/- 618)/J mol(-1) = -55122+21.893 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (Ca2Ta2O7) (+/- 729)/J mol(-1) = -82562+31.843 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (Ca4Ta2O9) (+/- 955)/J mol(-1) = -126598+48.859 (T/K) The Gibbs energy of formation of the four ternary compounds obtained in this study differs significantly from that reported in the literature. The thermodynamic data and phase diagram are used for understanding the mechanism and kinetics of calciothermic and electrochemical reduction of Ta2O5 to metal. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Oxygen potentials established by the equilibrium between three condensed phases, CaOss+CoOss+ Ca3Co2O6 and CoOss+Ca3Co2O6+Ca3CO3.93+O-alpha(9.36-delta), are measured as a function of temperature using solid-state electrochemical cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte and pure oxygen as the reference electrode. Cation non-stoichiometry and oxygen non-stoichiometry in Ca3Co3.93+alpha O9.36-delta are determined using different techniques under defined conditions. Decomposition temperatures and thermodynamic properties of Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3Co4O9.163 are calculated from the results. The standard entropy and enthalpy of formation of Ca3Co2O6 at 298.15 K are evaluated. Using thermodynamic data from this study and auxiliary information from the literature, phase diagram for the ternary system Ca-Co-O is computed. Isothermal sections at representative temperatures are displayed to demonstrate the evolution of phase relations with temperature. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Here, we demonstrate a Si-mediated environmentally friendly reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and the fabrication of its hybrids with multiwall carbon nanotubes and nanofibers. The reduction of GO is facilitated by nascent hydrogen generated by the reaction between Si and KOH at similar to 60 degrees C. The overall process takes 5 to 7 minutes and 10 to 15 mu m of Si is consumed each time. We show that Si can be used multiple times and the rGO based hybrids can be used for electrode materials.

The effects of two major electrodeposition process conditions, electrolyte bath temperature and current density, on the microstructure and crystallographic texture of pure tin coatings on brass and, ultimately, on the extent of whisker formation have been examined. The grain size of the deposited coatings increased with increasing electrolyte bath temperature and current density, which significantly affected the dominant texture: (211) or (420) was the dominant texture at low current densities whereas, depending on deposition temperature, (200) or (220) became the dominant texture at high current densities. After deposition, coatings were subjected to different environmental conditions, for example isothermal aging (room temperature, 50A degrees C, or 150A degrees C) for up to 90 days and thermal cycling between -25A degrees C and 85A degrees C for 100 cycles, and whisker growth was studied. The Sn coatings with low Miller index planes, for example (200) and (220), and with moderate aging temperature were more prone to whiskering than coating with high Miller index planes, for example (420), and high aging temperature. A processing route involving the optimum combination of current density and deposition temperature is proposed for suppressing whisker growth.

A supporting electrolyte based on lithium perchlorate has been functionalized with graphene (ionic liquid functionalized graphene (IFGR)) by facile electrochemical exfoliation of graphite rods in aq. LiClO4 solution. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-IFGR films were prepared by electropolymerization of EDOT monomer with IFGR as supporting electrolyte in ethanol at static potential of 1.5 V. The Raman, SEM, and XPS analysis of PEDOT-IFGR film confirmed the presence of functionalized graphene in the film. The PEDOT-IFGR films showed good electrochemical properties, better ionic and electrical conductivity, significant band gap, and excellent spectroelectrochemical and electrochromic properties. The electrical conductivity of PEDOT-IFGR film was measured as about 3968 S cm(-1). PEDOT-IFGR films at reduced state showed strong and broad absorption in the whole visible region and remarkable absorption at near-IR region. PEDOT-IFGR film showed electrochromic response between transmissive blue and darkish gray at redox potential. The color contrast (%T) between fully reduced and oxidized states of PEDOT-IFGR film is 25 % at lambda (max) of 485 nm. The optical switching stability of PEDOT-IFGR film has retained 80 % of its electroactivity even after 500 cycles.

Co3O4 and Co3O4/MWCNTs were prepared by hydrothermal process under autogenous pressure in Teflon lined autoclave and calcined at 250 degrees C. Both samples were characterized by PXRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, TEM & FT-Raman to evaluate their surface and bulk properties. The PXRD pattern of the materials indicated the formation of cubic phase of Co3O4. FT-IR results showed the presence of metal oxygen bond in the samples. The SEM and TEM images of the Co3O4 / MWCNTs indicated spherical and cubic aggregates of metal oxide particles (10-30 nm) decorated both on the surface and inside the tubes of carbon nanotubes. The characteristic Ig and Id (graphitic and defects) Raman bands indicated the retention of tubular structure of MWCNTs even after the deposition of Co3O4. The calcined Co3O4-MWCNTs composites and Co3O4 exhibited specific capacitance of 284 & 205 F/g at a sweep rate of 2mVs(-1) in 6M KOH by cyclic voltammetry. The psuedocapacitance performances of calcined Co3O4-MWCNTs were found to be better than Co3O4. Chronopotentiometric studies made for the materials at a current density of 500mA/g indicated 100% columbic efficiency at 2000th cycle for Co3O4/ MWCNTs which is a better electrode material than Co3O4.

The objective of the present work is to study the effect of electrical process Parameters (duty cycle and frequency) on morphological, structural, and in-vitro corrosion characteristics of oxide films formed on zirconium by plasma electrolytic oxidation in an electrolyte system consisting of 5 g/L of trisodium orthophosphate. The oxide films fabricated on zirconium by systematically varying the duty cycle and frequency are characterized for its phase composition, surface morphology, chemical composition, roughness, wettability, surface energy, scratch resistance, corrosion resistance, apatite forming ability and osteoblast cell adhesion. X-ray diffraction pattern of all the oxide films showed the predominance of m-ZrO2 phase. Dense and uniform films with thickness varying from 9 to 15 mu m and roughness in the range of 0.62 to 1.03 mu m are formed. Porosity of oxide films is found to be increased with an increase infrequency. The water contact angle results demonstrated that the oxide films exhibited similar hydrophilicity to zirconium substrate. All oxide films showed improved corrosion resistance, as indicated by far lower corrosion current density and passive corrosion potential compared to the zirconium substrate in simulated body fluid environment, and among the four different combinations of duty cycle and frequency employed in the present study, the oxide film formed at 95% duty cycle and 50 Hz frequency (HDLF film) showed superior pitting corrosion resistance, which can be attributed to its pore free morpholOgy. Scratch test results showed that the HDLF oxide film adhered firmly to the substrate by developing a notable scratch resistance at 19.5 +/- 1.2.N. Besides the best corrosion resistance and scratch retistance, the HDLF film also showed good apatite forming ability and osteo sarcoma cell adhesion on its surface. The HDLF oxide film on zirconium with superior surface characteristics is believed to be useful for various types of implants in the dental and orthopedic fields. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Stimulus artifacts inhibit reliable acquisition of biological evoked potentials for several milliseconds if an electrode contact is utilized for both electrical stimulation and recording purposes. This hinders the measurement of evoked short-latency biological responses, which is otherwise elicited by stimulation in implantable prosthetic devices. We present an improved stimulus artifact suppression scheme using two electrode simultaneous stimulation and differential readout using high-gain amplifiers. Substantial reduction of artifact duration has been shown possible through the common-mode rejection property of an instrumentation amplifier for electrode interfaces. The performance of this method depends on good matching of electrode-electrolyte interface properties of the chosen electrode pair. A novel calibration algorithm has been developed that helps in artificial matching of impedance and thereby achieves the required performance in artifact suppression. Stimulus artifact duration has been reduced down to 50 mu s from the stimulation-cum-recording electrodes, which is similar to 6x improvement over the present state of the art. The system is characterized with emulated resistor-capacitor loads and a variety of in-vitro metal electrodes dipped in saline environment. The proposed method is going to be useful for closed-loop electrical stimulation and recording studies, such as bidirectional neural prosthesis of retina, cochlea, brain, and spinal cord.

Effect of MnO addition on microstructure and ionic transport properties of nanocrystalline cubic(c)-ZrO2 is reported. Monoclinic (m) ZrO2 powders with 10-30 mol% MnO powder are mechanically alloyed in a planetary ball mill at room temperature for 10 h and annealed at 550 degrees C for 6 h. In all compositions m-ZrO2 transforms completely to nanocrystalline c-ZrO2 phase and MnO is fully incorporated into c-ZrO2 lattice. Rietveld's refinement technique is employed for detailed microstructure analysis by analyzing XRD patterns. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis confirms the complete formation of c-ZrO2 phase. Presence of stoichiometric Mn in c-ZrO2 powder is confirmed by Electron Probe Microscopy analysis. XPS analysis reveals that Mn is mostly in Mn2+ oxidation state. A correlation between lattice parameter and oxygen vacancy is established. A detailed ionic conductivity measurement in the 250 degrees-575 degrees C temperature range describes the effect of MnO on conductivity of c-ZrO2. The ionic conductivity (s) of 30 mol% MnO alloyed ZrO2 at 550 degrees C is 0.04 s cm(-1). Electrical relaxation studies are carried out by impedance and modulus spectroscopy. Relaxation frequency is found to increase with temperature and MnO mol fraction. Electrical characterization predicts that these compounds have potentials for use as solid oxide fuel cell electrolyte material. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A cost-effective 12 V substrate-integrated lead-carbon hybrid ultracapacitor is developed and performance tested. These hybrid ultracapacitors employ flexible-graphite sheets as negative plate current-collectors that are coated amperometrically with a thin layer of conducting polymer, namely poly-aniline to provide good adhesivity to activated-carbon layer. The positive plate of the hybrid ultracapacitors comprise conventional lead-sheet that is converted electrochemically into a substrate-integrated lead-dioxide electrode. 12 V substrate-integrated lead-carbon hybrid ultracapacitors both in absorbent-glass-mat and polymeric silica-gel electrolyte configurations are fabricated and characterized. It is possible to realize 12 V configurations with capacitance values of similar to 200 F and similar to 300 F, energy densities of similar to 1.9 Wh kg(-1) and similar to 2.5 Wh kg(-1) and power densities of similar to 2 kW kg(-1) and similar to 0.8 kW kg(-1), respectively, having faradaic-efficiency values of similar to 90 % with cycle-life in excess of 100,000 cycles. The effective cost of the mentioned hybrid ultracapacitors is estimated to be about similar to 4 US$/Wh as compared to similar to 20 US$/Wh for commercially available ultracapacitors.

We report molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore the influence of a counterion on the structure and dynamics of cationic and anionic solvation shells for various ions in methanol at 298 K. We show that the variation in ionic size of either the cation or the anion in an ion pair influences the solvation structure of the other ion as well as the diffusivity in an electrolyte solution of methanol. The extent of ionic association between the cation and its counteranion of different ionic sizes has been investigated by analyzing the radial distribution functions (RDFs) and the orientation of methanol molecules in the first solvation shell (FSS) of ions. It is shown that the methanol in the FSS of the anion as well the cation exhibit quite different radial and orientational structures as compared to methanol which lie in the FSS of either the anion or the cation but not both. We find that the coordination number (CN) of F-, Cr-, and I- ions decreases with increasing size of the anion which is contrary to the trend reported for the anions in H2O. The mean residence time (MRT) of methanol molecules in the FSS of ions has been calculated using the stable states picture (SSP) approach. It is seen that the ion-counterion interaction has a considerable influence on the MRT of methanol molecules in the FSS of ions. We also discuss the stability order of the ion-counterion using the potentials of mean force (PMFs) for ion pairs with ions of different sizes. The PMF plots reveal that the Li+-F- pair (small-small) is highly stable and the Li+-I- pair is least stable (small-large) in electrolyte solutions.

We discuss here the crucial role of the particle network and its stability on the long-range ion transport in solid liquid composite electrolytes. The solid liquid composite electrolytes chosen for the study here comprise nanometer sized silica (SiO2) particles having various surface chemical functionalities dispersed in nonaqueous lithium salt solutions, viz, lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) in two different polyethylene glycol based solvents. These systems constitute representative examples of an independent class of soft matter electrolytes known as ``soggy sand'' electrolytes, which have tremendous potential in diverse electrochemical devices. The oxide additive acts as a heterogeneous dopant creating free charge carriers and enhancing the local ion transport. For long-range transport, however, a stable spanning particle network is needed. Systematic experimental investigations here reveal that the spatial and time dependent characteristics of the particle network in the liquid solution are nontrivial. The network characteristics are predominantly determined by the chemical makeup of the electrolyte components and the chemical interactions between them. It is noteworthy that in this study the steady state macroscopic ionic conductivity and viscosity of the solid liquid composite electrolyte are observed to be greatly determined by the additive oxide surface chemical functionality, solvent chemical composition, and solvent dielectric constant.

8mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) is an extensively studied solid electrolyte. But there is no consistency in the reported ionic conductivity values of 8YSZ thin films. Interfacial segregation in YSZ thin films can affect its ionic conductivity by locally altering the surface chemistry. This article presents the effects of annealing temperature and film thickness on free surface yttria segregation behavior in 8YSZ thin film by Angle Resolved XPS and its influence on the ionic conductivity of sputtered 8YSZ thin films. Surface yttria concentration of about 32, 20, and 9mol% have been found in 40nm 8YSZ films annealed at 1273, 1173, and 1073K, respectively. Yttria segregation is found to increase with increase in annealing temperature and film thickness. Ionic conductivities of 0.23, 0.16, and 0.08Scm(-1) are observed at 923K for 40nm 8YSZ films annealed at 1073, 1173, and 1273K, respectively. The decrease in conductivity with increase in annealing temperature is attributed to the increased yttria segregation with annealing. Neither segregation nor film thickness is found to affect the activation energy of oxygen ion conduction. Target purity is found to play a key role in determining free surface yttria segregation in 8YSZ thin films.

An in situ study of stress evolution and mechanical behavior of germanium as a lithium-ion battery electrode material is presented. Thin films of germanium are cycled in a half-cell configuration with lithium metal foil as counter/reference electrode, with 1M LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate, diethyl carbonate, dimethyl carbonate solution (1:1:1, wt%) as electrolyte. Real-time stress evolution in the germanium thin-film electrodes during electrochemical lithiation/delithiation is measured by monitoring the substrate curvature using the multi-beam optical sensing method. Upon lithiation a-Ge undergoes extensive plastic deformation, with a peak compressive stress reaching as high as -0.76 +/- 0.05 GPa (mean +/- standard deviation). The compressive stress decreases with lithium concentration reaching a value of approximately -0.3 GPa at the end of lithiation. Upon delithiation the stress quickly became tensile and follows a trend that mirrors the behavior on compressive side; the average peak tensile stress of the lithiated Ge samples was approximately 0.83 GPa. The peak tensile stress data along with the SEM analysis was used to estimate a lower bound fracture resistance of lithiated Ge, which is approximately 5.3 J/m(2). It was also observed that the lithiated Ge is rate sensitive, i.e., stress depends on how fast or slow the charging is carried out. (C) The Author(s) 2015. Published by ECS. Graphene was produced by electrochemical exfoliation of a used battery electrode. Aqueous solutions of cationic (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide), anionic (sodium dodecyl sulphate), and nonionic (poly vinyl pyrrolidone) surfactants, along with NaCl and combinations of these surfactants with NaCl, were used as the electrolyte. The following observations were made: (I) up to several micrometer sized graphene sheets were produced, (II) the addition of NaCl into the electrolytes significantly enhanced the yield of the exfoliated graphene, (III) the type of surfactant affected the defect density of the exfoliated product, and (IV) electrochemical impedance spectroscopy provided insight into the reason for the changes in the defect density ratio between the graphene samples.
