It is possible to substitute Bi in the superconducting BaPb0.75Bi0.25O3 by Sb or Te without destroying the superconductivity. With Sb, a continuous series of solid solutions BaPb0.75Bi0.25?ySbyO3 (0 less-than-or-equals, slant y less-than-or-equals, slant 0.25) exists, while with Te, perovskite BaPb0.75Bi0.25?yTeyO3 exists only upto y = 0.15. With increasing substitution by Sb or Te, Tc decreases continously in both the systems. Superconductivity with a maximum Tc of 8K is found in Ba0.9La0.1Pb0.9?yBiyTl0.1O3 for y = 0.25.

Two new hydrazinium complexes of manganese, (N2H5)3MnX5 (X = Cl and Br), have been prepared and characterized by analysis, infrared and visible spectra. The single crystal X-ray structure of the chloride complex has been determined. Only one of the three N2H+5 cations is coordinated to the metal. In the anion, [Mn(N2H5)Cl5]2-, the coordination polyhedron around the manganese atom is a slightly distorted octahedron.

A Schiff base metal complex, [Cu(II)(PLP-DL-tyrosinato)(H2O)].4H2O (PLP = pyridoxal phosphate), with the molecular formula CuC17O13N2H27P has been prepared and characterized by magnetic, spectral, and X-ray structural studies. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1BAR with a = 8.616 (2) angstrom, b = 11.843 (3) angstrom, c = 12.177 (3) angstrom, alpha = 103.40 (2)degrees, beta = 112.32 (2)degrees, gamma = 76.50 (1)degrees, and Z = 2. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by least-squares techniques to a final R value of 0.057 for 3132 independent reflections. The coordination geometry around Cu(II) is distorted square pyramidal with phenolic oxygen, imino nitrogen, and carboxylate oxygen from the Schiff base ligand and water oxygen as basal donor atoms. The axial site is occupied by a phosphate oxygen from a neighboring molecule, thus resulting in a one-dimensional polymer. The structure reveals pi-pi interaction of the aromatic side chain of the amino acid with the pyridoxal pi system. A comparative study is made of this complex with similar Schiff base complexes. The variable-temperature magnetic behavior of this compound shows a weak antiferromagnetic interaction.

Sr2TiMnO6, a double perovskite associated with high degree of B-site cation disorder was investigated in detail for its structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties. Though x-ray powder diffraction analysis confirms its cubic structure, first order Raman scattering and infrared reflectivity spectra indicate a breaking of the local cubic symmetry. The magnetization study reveals an anomaly at 14 K owing to a ferrimagnetic/canted antiferromagneticlike ordering arising from local Mn-O-Mn clusters. Saturated M-H hysteresis loops obtained at 5 K also reflect the weak ferromagnetic exchange interactions present in the system and an approximate estimation of Mn3+/Mn4+ was done using the magnetization data for the samples sintered at different temperatures. The conductivity and dielectric behavior of this system has been investigated in a broad temperature range of 10 to 300 K. Intrinsic permittivity was obtained only below 100 K whereas giant permittivity due to conductivity and Maxwell-Wagner polarization was observed at higher temperatures. X-ray photoemission studies further confirmed the presence of mixed oxidation states of Mn and the valence band spectra analysis was carried out in detail. We have analyzed the set of inter and intra base pair parameters for each dinucleotide step in single crystal structures of dodecamers, solved at high and medium resolution and all crystallized in P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group. The objective was to identify whether all the structures which have either the Drew-Dickerson (DD) sequence d[CGCGAATTCGCG] with some base modification or related sequence (non-DD), would display the same sequence dependent structural variability about its palindromic sequence, despite the molecule being bent at one end because of similar crystal lattice packing effect. Most of the local doublet parameters for base pairs steps G2-C3 and G10-C11 positions, symmetrically situated about the lateral twofold, were significantly correlated between themselves. In non-DD sequences, significant correlations between these positional parameters were absent. The different range of local step parameter values at each sequence position contributed to the gross feature of smooth helix axis bending in all structures. The base pair parameters in some of the positions, for medium resolution DD sequence, were quite unlike the high-resolution set and encompassed a higher range of values. Twist and slide are the two main parameters that show wider conformational range for the middle region of non-DD sequence structures in comparison to DD sequence structures. On the contrary, the minor and major groove features bear good resemblance between DD and non-DD sequence crystal structure datasets. The sugar-phosphate backbone torsion angles are similar in all structures, in sharp contrast to base pair parameter variation for high and low resolution DD and non-DD sequence structures, consisting of unusual (epsilon =g(-), xi =t) B-II conformation at the 10(th) position of the dodecamer sequence. Thus examining DD and non-DD sequence structures packed in the same crystal lattice arrangement, we infer that inter and intra base pair parameters are as symmetrically equivalent in its value as the symmetry related step for the palindromic DD sequence about lateral two-fold axis. This feature would lead us to agree with the conclusion that DNA conformation is not substantially affected by end-to-end or lateral inter-molecular interaction due to crystal lattice packing effect. Non-DD sequence structures acquire step parameter values which reflect the altered sequence at each of the dodecamer sequence position in the orthorhombic lattice while showing similar gross features of DD sequence structures

The importance and usefulness of local doublet parameters in understanding sequence dependent effects has been described for A- and B-DNA oligonucleotide crystal structures. Each of the two sets of local parameters described by us in the NUPARM algorithm, namely the local doublet parameters, calculated with reference to the mean z-axis, and the local helical parameters, calculated with reference to the local helix axis, is sufficient to describe the oligonucleotide structures, with the local helical parameters giving a slightly magnified picture of the variations in the structures. The values of local doublet parameters calculated by NUPARM algorithm are similar to those calculated by NEWHELIX90 program, only if the oligonucleotide fragment is not too distorted. The mean values obtained using all the available data for B-DNA crystals are not significantly different from those obtained when a limited data set is used, consisting only of structures with a data resolution of better than 2.4 A and without any bound drug molecule. Thus the variation observed in the oligonucleotide crystals appears to be independent of the quality of their crystallinity. No strong correlation is seen between any pair of local doublet parameters but the local helical parameters are interrelated by geometric relationships. An interesting feature that emerges from this analysis is that the local rise along the z-axis is highly correlated with the difference in the buckle values of the two basepairs in the doublet, as suggested earlier for the dodecamer structures (Bansal and Bhattacharyya, in Structure & Methods: DNA & RNA, Vol. 3 (Eds., R.H. Sarma and M.H. Sarma), pp. 139-153 (1990)). In fact the local rise values become almost constant for both A- and B-forms, if a correction is applied for the buckling of the basepairs. In B-DNA the AA, AT, TA and GA basepair sequences generally have a smaller local rise (3.25 A) compared to the other sequences (3.4 A) and this seems to be an intrinsic feature of basepair stacking interaction and not related to any other local doublet parameter. The roll angles in B-DNA oligonucleotides have small values (less than +/- 8 degrees), while mean local twist varies from 24 degrees to 45 degrees. The CA/TG doublet sequences show two types of preferred geometries, one with positive roll, small positive slide and reduced twist and another with negative roll, large positive slide and increased twist.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

The crystal and molecular structure of sodium deoxyinosine monophosphate (5'-dIMP) has been determined by x-ray crystallographic methods. The crystals belong to orthorhombic space group P212121, with a = 21.079(5) Aring, b = 9.206(3) Aring and c = 12.770(6) Aring. This deoxynucleotide shows common nucleotide features namely anti conformation about the glycosyl bond, C2' endo pucker for the deoxyribose sugar and gauche-gauche orientation for the phosphate group. The sodium ion is directly coordinated to the O3' atom, a feature observed in many crystal structures of sodium salts of nucleotides.

Molecular dynamics (MD) studies have been carried out on the Hoogsteen hydrogen bonded parallel and the reverse Hoogsteen hydrogen banded antiparallel C.G*G triplexes. Earlier, the molecular mechanics studies had shown that the parallel structure was energetically more favourable than the antiparallel structure. To characterize the structural stability of the two triplexes and to investigate whether the antiparallel structure can transit to an energetically more favourable structure, due to the local fluctuations in the structure during the MD simulation, the two structures were subjected to 200ps of constant temperature vacuum MD simulations at 300K. Initially no constraints were applied to the structures and it was observed that for the antiparallel tripler, the structure showed a large root mean square deviation from the starting structure within the first 12ps and the N4-H41-O6 hydrogen bond in the WC duplex got distorted due to a high propeller twist and a moderate increase in the opening angle in the basepairs. Starting from an initial value of 30 degrees, helical twist of the average structure from this simulation had a value of 36 degrees, while the parallel structure stabilized at a twist of 33 degrees. In spite of the hydrogen bond distortions in the antiparallel tripler, it was energetically comparable to the parallel tripler. To examine the structural characteristics of an undistorted structure, another MD simulation was performed on the antiparallel tripler by constraining all the hydrogen bonds. This structure stabilized at an average twist of 33 degrees. In the course of the dynamics though the energy of the molecule - compared to the initial structure - improved, it did not become comparable to the parallel structure. Energy minimization studies performed in the presence of explicit water and counterions also showed the two structures to be equally favourable energetically Together these results indicate that the parallel C.G*G tripler with Hoogsteen hydrogen bonds also represents a stereochemically and energetically favourable structure for this class of triplexes.

Coupled substitution of Nb(V) and Si(IV) for Ti(IV) and P(V)/As(V) in KTiOP04 (KTP) and KTiOAsO4 (KTA) giving new series of nonlinear optical materials, KTi1-xNbxOX1-xSixO4 (X=P,As), has been investigated. Substitution up to x = 0.40 readily occurs, the members retaining the orthorhombic (Pna2(1)) structure of KTP. The second harmonic generation (SHG) property of the parent KTP and KTA is not adversely affected by the coupled substitution. SHG intensity of the powder samples of the X = P series shows a slight increase with x up to x = 0.15; for 0.15 < x less-than-or-equal-to 0.40, there is a decrease in SHG intensity as compared to that for KTP. A similar trend in SHG intensity is seen for the arsenic analogs.

The intercalation of linear alkylamines (C1-C4) in the two-dimensional (2D) Ising antiferromagnet, FePS3, has been investigated. Intercalation proceeds with a dilation of the interlayer distance. The expansion (approximately 3.8 angstrom) is the same for all four amine molecules, suggesting that they are oriented flat with respect to the layers. From an analysis of the products of deintercalation, it is concluded that the intercalated species are the alkylammonium cations and neutral amine molecules. The intercalated compounds are highly moisture sensitive, as reflected in the chemical nature of the intercalated species. Charge neutrality of the lattice after intercalation is preserved by the loss of Fe2+ ions from the lattice. These Fe2+ ions are further oxidized to form superparamagnetic Fe2O3 clusters, as confirmed by Mossbauer spectra and magnetic measurements. This was further corroborated by in situ EPR studies. The Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra of the intercalated compounds showed evidence for two species other than Fe2O3. On the basis of the observed isomer shifts and quadrupole splittings, they have been assigned to Fe2+ in an environment similar to that in FePS3 and in a distorted FePS3 environment. The temperature and field dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of the amine-intercalated FePS3 have been measured. Their magnetic behavior shows many of the features expected of a 2D Ising antiferromagnet with random defects, Fe1-xPS3, in agreement with the mechanism of intercalation.
