Electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of calcium-doped YFeO3, a potential cathode material in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), are measured as function of temperature and composition in air to resolve conflicts in the literature both on the nature of conduction (n- or p-type) and the types of defects (majority and the minority) present. Compositions of Y1-xCaxFeO3-delta with x = 0.0, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1 are studied in the temperature range from 625 to 1250 K. All Y1-xCaxFeO3-delta samples show p-type semiconducting behaviour. Addition of Ca up to 5% dramatically increases the conductivity of YFeO3; increase is more gradual up to 10%. A second phase Ca2Fe2O5 appears in the microstructure for Ca concentrations in excess of 11%.

N-doped monoclinic Ga2O3 nanostructures of different morphologies have been synthesized by heating Ga metal in ambient air at 1150 degrees C to 1350 degrees C for 1 to 5 h duration. Neither catalyst nor any gas flow has been used for the synthesis of N-doped Ga2O3 nanostructures. The morphology was controlled by monitoring the curvature of the Ga droplet. Plausible growth mechanisms are discussed to explain the different morphology of the nanostructures. Elemental mapping by electron energy loss spectroscopy of the nanostructures indicate uniform distribution of Ga, O and N. It is interesting to note that we have used neither nitride source nor any gas flow but the synthesis was carried out in ambient air. We believe that ambient nitrogen acts as the source of nitrogen. Unintentional nitrogen doping of the Ga2O3 nanostructures is a straightforward method and such nanostructures could be promising candidates for white light emission.

The photoluminescence study of Fermi-edge singularity (FES) in modulation-doped pseudomorphic AlxGa1-xAs/InyGa1-yAs/GaAs quantum well (QW) heterostructures is presented. In the above QW structures the optical transitions between n = 1 and n = 2 electronic subband to the n = 1 heavy hole subband (E-11 and E-21 transitions, respectively) are observed with FES appearing as a lower energy shoulder to the E-21 transition. The observed FES is attributed to the Fermi wave vector in the first electronic subband under the conditions of population of the second electronic subband. The FES appears at about 10 meV below E-21 transition around 4.2 K. Initially it gets stronger with increasing temperature and becomes a distinct peak at about 20 K. Further increase in temperature quenches FES and reaches the base line at around 40 K.

Metal-ion- (Ag, Co, Ni and Pd) doped titania nanocatalysts were successfully deposited on glass slides by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique using a poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) polyelectrolyte system. Solid diffuse reflectance (SDR) studies showed a linear increase in absorbance at 416 nm with increase in the number of m-TiO2 thin films. The LbL assembled thin films were tested for their photocatalytic activity through the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible-light illumination. From the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the thin films had a porous morphology and the atomic force microscope (AFM) studies showed ``rough'' surfaces. The porous and rough surface morphology resulted in high surface areas hence the high photocatalytic degradation (up to 97% over a 6.5 h irradiation period) using visible-light observed. Increasing the number of multilayers deposited on the glass slides resulted in increased film thickness and an increased rate of photodegradation due to increase in the availability of more nanocatalysts (more sites for photodegradation). The LbL assembled thin films had strong adhesion properties which made them highly stable thus displaying the same efficiencies after five (5) reusability cycles.

This paper reports investigation of Na2O and ZnO modified borovanadate glasses in the highly modified regime of compositions. These glasses have been prepared by microwave route. Ultraviolet (UV) and visible, infrared (IR), Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS NMR) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopies have been used to characterize the speciation in the glasses. Together with the variation of properties such as molar volume and glass transition temperatures, spectroscopic data indicate that at high levels of modification, ZnO tends to behave like network former. It is proposed that the observed variation of all the properties can be reasonably well understood with a structural model. The model considers that the modification and speciation in glasses are strongly determined by the hierarchy of group electronegativities. Further, it is proposed that the width of the transitions of glasses obtained under same condition reflects the fragility of the glasses. An empirical expression has been suggested to quantify fragility on the basis of width of the transition regions. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Photo-thermal Deflection (PTD) technique is used to investigate the thermal diffusivity (alpha) of Ge17Te83 - xTlx (0 <= x <= 13) glasses as a function of composition. The thermal diffusivity of these glasses is found to lie in the range 0.020 to 0.048 cm(2)/s, which is consistent with the memory type of electrical switching exhibited by these samples. Further, it is found that alpha shows an initial increase with Tl addition, followed by a decrease. The observed composition dependence of thermal diffusivity has been understood on the basis that the thallium atoms are incorporated as a covalent species for lower values of x, increasing the network rigidity; however, they enter as ionic species for higher x values, fragmenting the network. The initial increase in a is due to the increasing network rigidity and the subsequent decrease is because of the fragmentation of the network. Also, there is a strong correlation between the composition dependence of switching voltages observed earlier and the variation with composition of electrical resistivity and thermal diffusivity of Ge17Te83 - xTlx glasses obtained in the present study. High density transparent glasses (7.86 g/cc) were fabricated in the 2Bi(2)O(3)-B2O3 (BBO) system. Optical band gap of the obtained glasses was found to be 2.6eV. The refractive index measured for these glasses was 2.25 +/- 0.05 at lambda=543 nm. Nonlinear refraction and absorption studies were carried out on the BBO glasses using z-scan technique a lambda=532 nm of 10 ns pulse width. The nonlinear refractive index obtained was n(2)=12.1x10(-14) cm(2)/W and nonlinear absorption coefficient was beta=15.2 cm/GW. The n(2) and beta values of the BBO glasses were large compared to the other reported high index bismuth based oxide glass systems in the literature. These were attributed to the high density, high linear refractive index, low band gap and two photon absorption associated with these glasses. The electronic origin of large nonlinearities was discussed based on bond-orbital theory.

Titanium carbide (TiC) is an electrically conducting material with favorable electrochemical properties. In the present studies, carbon-doped TiO2 (C-TiO2) has been synthesized from TiC particles, as well as TiC films coated on stainless steel substrate via thermal annealing under various conditions. Several C-TiO2 substrates are synthesized by varying experimental, conditions and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques. C-TiO2 in the dry state (in powder form as well as in film form) is subsequently used as a substrate for enhancing Raman signals corresponding to 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-nitrothiophenol by utilizing chemical enhancement based on charge-transfer interactions. Carbon, a nonmetal dopant in TiO2, improves the intensities of Raman signals, compared, to undoped TiO2. Significant dependence of Raman intensity on carbon doping is observed. Ameliorated performance obtained using C-TiO2 is attributed to the presence of surface defects that originate due to carbon as a dopant, which, in turn,, triggers charge transfer between TiO2 and analyte. The C-TiO2 substrates are subsequently regenerated for repetitive use by illuminating an analyte-adsorbed substrate with visible light for a period of 5 h.

Pure and tin doped zinc oxide (Sn:ZnO) thin films were prepared for the first time by NSP technique using aqueous solutions of zinc acetate dehydrate, tin (IV) chloride fendahydrate and methanol. X-ray diffraction patterns confirm that the films are polycrystalline in nature exhibiting hexagonal wurtzite type, with (0 0 2) as preferred orientation. The structural parameters such as lattice constant ('a' and `c'), crystallite size, dislocation density, micro strain, stress and texture coefficient were calculated from X-ray diffraction studies. Surface morphology was found to be modified with increasing Sn doping concentration. The ZnO films have high transmittance 85% in the visible region, and the transmittance is found to be decreased with the increase of Sn doping concentration. The corresponding optical band gap decreases from 3.25 to 3.08 eV. Room temperature photoluminescence reveals the sharp emission of strong UV peak at 400 nm (3.10 eV) and a strong sharp green luminescence at 528 nm (2.34 eV) in the Sn doped ZnO films. The electrical resistivity is found to be 10(6) Omega-cm at higher temperature and 10(5) Omega-cm at lower temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effect of interaction of tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and tetrathia fulvalene (TTF) with boron- and nitrogen-doped graphene has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The G- and 2D bands of boron- and nitrogen-doped graphenes in the Raman spectra show significantly different changes on interaction with electron-donor and -acceptor molecules. Thus, tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) have different effects on the Raman spectra of boron- and nitrogen-doped graphenes. The changes in the Raman spectra brought about by electron-donor and -acceptor molecules can be understood in general terms on the basis of molecular charge transfer. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Temperature dependent x-ray diffraction measurements have been performed to understand the implications of magnetic phase coexistence on crystallographic structure in a half-doped manganite Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3. The compound shows a structural phase transition from high-temperature tetragonal-I4/mcm to low-temperature orthorhombic-Fmmm symmetry around the ferromagnetic to antiferro-magnetic transition. Rietveld analysis shows the coexistence of these two structures emerges at high temperature within the ferromagnetic state, and persists down to lowest temperature. Below around 40 K, however, this structural evolution stops, and a significant fraction (similar to 22%) of untransformed high-temperature phase remains. This agrees with earlier magnetization study, thus establishing its magneto-structural coupling. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A detailed low temperature magneto-transport study is carried out to understand the transport mechanism in pure and Co doped ZnO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. A negative transverse magneto-resistance (MR) (with a value similar to 4% at 4.5 K) which decreases monotonically with the increase in temperature, is observed for the undoped ZnO film. A competition between positive and negative MR is observed for the Co doped ZnO samples. In this case at higher field values negative MR contribution dominates over the positive MR, which gives rise to a slope change in the MR data. Our data for MR shows excellent agreement with the semi-empirical formula given by Khosla et al., which is originally proposed for the degenerate semiconductors. This formula incorporates the third order perturbation expansion of the s-d exchange scattering of the conduction electrons from the localised spins. We have also obtained the Hall mobility, carrier conc. and mean free path as function of temperature for the pure ZnO film.

This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of an ultrafast laser written Er-doped chalcogenide glass buried waveguide amplifier; Er-doped GeGaS glass has been synthesized by the vacuum sealed melt quenching technique. Waveguides have been fabricated inside the 4 mm long sample by direct ultrafast laser writing. The total passive fiber-to-fiber insertion loss is 2.58 +/- 0.02 dB at 1600 nm, including a propagation loss of 1.6 +/- 0.3 dB. Active characterization shows a relative gain of 2.524 +/- 0.002 dB/cm and 1.359 +/- 0.005 dB/cm at 1541 nm and 1550 nm respectively, for a pump power of 500 mW at a wavelength of 980 nm. Nano-indentation studies have been undertaken on bulk Ge15Te85-xSix glasses (0 <= x <= 9), to estimate hardness, H and elastic modulus, E. It is found that E and H increase initially with the increase in the atomic percent of Si. Further, a plateau is seen in the composition dependence of E and H in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6. It is also seen that the addition of up to 2 at% Si increases the density rho of the glass considerably; however, further additions of Si lead to a near linear reduction in rho, in the range 2 <= x <= 6. Beyond x=6, rho increases again with Si content. The variation of molar volume V-m brings out a more fascinating picture. A plateau is seen in the intermediate phase suggesting that the molecular structure of the glasses is adapting to keep the count of constraints fixed in this particular phase. The observed variations in mechanical properties are associated with the Boolchand's intermediate phase in the present glassy system, in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6, suggested earlier from calorimetric and electrical switching studies. The present results reveal rather directly the existence of the intermediate phase in elastic and plastic properties of chalcogenide glasses. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nanoindentation studies on Ge15Te85-xInx glasses indicate that the hardness and elastic modulus of these glasses increase with indium concentration. While a pronounced plateau is seen in the elastic modulus in the composition range 3 <= x <= 7, the hardness exhibits a change in slope at compositions x = 3 and x = 7. Also, the density exhibits a broad maximum in this composition range. The observed changes in the mechanical properties and density are clearly associated with the thermally reversing window in Ge15Te85-xInx glasses in the composition range 3 <= x <= 7. In addition, a local minimum is seen in density and hardness around x = 9, the chemical threshold of the system. Further, micro-Raman studies reveal that as-quenched Ge15Te85-xInx samples exhibit two prominent peaks, at 123 cm(-1) and 155 cm(-1). In thermally annealed samples, the peaks at 120 cm(-1) and 140 cm(-1), which are due to crystalline Te, emerge as the strongest peaks. The Raman spectra of polished samples are similar to those of annealed samples, with strong peaks at 123 cm(-1) and 141 cm(-1). The spectra of lightly polished samples outside the thermally reversing window resemble those of thermally annealed samples; however, the spectra of glasses with compositions in the thermally reversing window resemble those of as-quenched samples. This observation confirms the earlier idea that compositions in the thermally reversing window are non-aging and are more stable. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
