The primary objective of the present work was to study the electronic and in vitro electrochemical properties of micro-arc oxidized titania films on Cp Ti, fabricated independently in various electrolyte solutions consisting of anions such as phosphate (PO43-), borate (B4O72-), citrate (C6H5O73-) and silicate (SiO32-). Further the role of anions on the structural, morphological and compositional properties of the fabricated films was studied. All the titania films were developed by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique for a fixed treatment time of 8 min under constant current mode. The surface morphology, elemental distribution, composition and structural characteristics of the films were assessed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The thermodynamic and kinetic corrosion properties of the films were studied under simulated body fluid (SBF) conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 degrees C) by conducting chronopotentiometric and potentiodynamic polarization tests. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) coupled with equivalent circuit modelling was carried out to analyse the frequency response and Mott-Schottky analysis was performed to study the semiconducting (electronic) properties of the films. Salt spray fog accelerated corrosion test was conducted for 168h as per ASTM B117 standard to corroborate the corrosion and semiconducting properties of the samples based on the visual examination. The XRD results showed that the transformation from the metastable anatase phase to the thermodynamically stable rutile phase and the crystalline growth of the respective phases were strongly influenced by the addition of anions. The SEM-EDS results demonstrated that the phosphorous (P) content in the films varied from 2.4 at% to 5.0 at% indicating that the amount of P in the films could be modified by adding an appropriate electrolyte additive. The electrochemical corrosion test results showed that the film fabricated in citrate (C6H5O73-) containing electrolyte is thermodynamically and kinetically more stable compared to that of all the others. The results of the Mott-Schottky analysis indicated that all the fabricated films showed an n-type semiconducting behaviour and the film developed in citrate (C6H5O73-) containing electrolyte exhibited the lowest donor concentration and the most negative flat band potential that contributed to its highest corrosion resistance in SBF solution. The results of the salt spray accelerated corrosion tests were in agreement with those obtained from the electrochemical and Mott-Schottky analysis.

The lead-free Ba (Ti1-xZrx)O-3 ceramic has shown enhanced piezo-response (d(33)) in a narrow composition interval (0.01 <= x <= 0.03) exhibiting the coexistence of two ferroelectric phases. The system presents two electric-field-dependent-property regimes: (i) a low field regime (E < 1.7 kV mm(-1)) where d(33) is nearly independent of the poling field, and (ii) (E > 1.7 kV mm(-1)) for which d(33) drops sharply. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the later phenomenon is related to field driven irreversible structural transformation, which tends to drive the system away from an equilibrium two phase state to a nearly single phase metastable state.

The strain-controlled fatigue behaviour of Ti-6Al-4V alloy with up to 0.11 wt.% B addition was investigated. Results show significant softening when the strain amplitudes, Delta epsilon(T)/2, are >= 0.75%. B addition was found to improve the fatigue life for Delta epsilon(T)/2 <= 0.75% as it corresponds to the elastic regime and hence is strength dominated. At Delta epsilon(T)/2 = 1%, in contrast, the base alloy exhibits higher fatigue life as TiB particle cracking due to strain incompatibility causes easy crack nucleation in the B-modified alloys. Two Schiff base metal complexes Cu-SPETNNO3 (1) and Ni-SPETNNO3 (2) SPETN=2,2-propane,1,3-diylbis(nitrilomethyldyne)pyridyl,phenolate] ] with hydrogen bonding groups have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In both of the compounds nitrates occupy a crystallographic general position. In 1 the lattice nitrates are on the 2(1) screw axis while in 2 they are at the crystallographic inversion center. C-HOnitrate synthons (formed by the nitrate anions and peripheral hydrogen bonding groups of the metal complexes) are non-covalent building blocks in molecular-assembly and packing of the cationic Schiff base metal complexes (M=Ni2+, Cu2+), resulting in 2-D hydrogen bonded networks. The CuCu non-bonding contact in 1 is 3.268 angstrom while the Ni-Ni bonding distance in 2 is 3.437 angstrom.

Evolution of texture and concomitant grain refinement during Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) of Ti - 13Nb - 13Zr alloy has been presented. Sub-micron sized equiaxed grains with narrow grain size distribution could be achieved after eight pass at 873 K. A characteristic ECAP texture evolved in alpha phase till four passes while the evolution of characteristic ECAP texture in the beta phase could be observed only beyond the fourth pass. On increasing the deformation up to eight passes, the texture in alpha phase weakens while the beta phase shows an ideal ECAP texture. A weaker texture, low dislocation density and high crystallite size values in alpha phase suggest the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization. The absence of texture evolution in beta phase till four passes can be attributed to local lattice rotations. The characteristic ECAP texture in the eight pass deformed sample is attributed to delayed dynamic recrystallization in the beta phase. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

For the purpose of water purification, novel and low-cost adsorbents which are promising replacements for activated carbon are being actively pursued. However, a single-phase material that adsorbs both cationic and anionic species remains elusive. Hence, a low-cost, multiphase adsorbent bed that purifies water containing both anionic and cationic pollutants is a desirable alternative. We choose anionic (Congo red, Orange G) and cationic (methylene blue, malachite green) dyes as model pollutants. These dyes are chosen since they are widely found in effluents from textile, leather, fishery, and pharmaceutical industries, and their carcinogenic, mutagenic, genotoxic, and cytotoxic impact on mammalian cells is well-established. We show that ZnO, (Zn0.24Cu0.76)O and cobalt ferrite based multiphase fixed adsorbent bed efficiently adsorbs model anionic (Congo red, Orange G) and cationic (methylene blue and malachite green) pollutants, and their complex mixtures. All adsorbent phases are synthesized using room-temperature, high-yield (similar to 96-100%), green chemical processes. The nanoadsorbents are characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and zeta potential measurements. The constituent nanophases are deliberately chosen to be beyond 50 nm, in order to avoid the nanotoxic size regime of oxides. Adsorption characteristics of each of the phases are examined. Isotherm based analysis shows that adsorption is both spontaneous and highly favorable. zeta potential measurements indicate that electrostatic interactions are the primary driving force for the observed adsorption behavior. The isotherms obtained are best described using a composite Langmuir-Freundlich model. Pseudo-first-order, rapid kinetics is observed (with adsorption rate constants as high as 0.1-0.2 min(-1) in some cases). Film diffusion is shown to be the primary mechanism of adsorption.

The influence of strain on the mechanical properties and deformation kinetic parameters of nanotwinned (at) copper is investigated by a series of nanoindentation experiments, which were performed by employing sharp indenters with five varying centerline-to-face angles (psi). Comparison experiments were also conducted on (1 1 0) single crystalline Cu. Experimental results indicate that, unlike coarsegrained materials, nt-Cu is prone to plastic flow softening with large material pile-up around the indentation impression at high levels of strains. Localized detwinning becomes more significant with decreasing psi, concomitant with reduced strain-rate sensitivity (m) and enhanced activation volume (V*). The m of nt-Cu is found to depend sensitively on psi with a variation of more than a factor of 3, whereas V* exhibits a much less sensitive trend. This paper discusses the validation of the experimental techniques and the implications of various deformation kinetic parameters on the underlying deformation mechanisms of nt-Ca. 2013 Acta Materialia Inc. In the present study, high strength bulk ultrafine-grained titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V bars were successfully processed using multi-pass warm rolling. Ti-6Al-4V bars of 12 mm diameter and several metres long were processed by multi-pass warm rolling at 650 degrees C, 700 degrees C and 750 degrees C. The highest achieved mechanical properties for Ti-6Al-4V in as rolled condition were yield strength 1191 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 1299 MPa having an elongation of 10% when the rolling temperature was 650 degrees C. The concurrent evolution of microstructure and texture has been studied using optical microscopy, electron back scattered diffraction and x-ray diffraction. The significant improvement in mechanical properties has been attributed to the ultrafine-grained microstructure as well as the morphology of alpha and beta phases in the warm rolled specimens. The warm rolling of Ti-6Al-4V leads to formation of < 10 (1) over bar0 >alpha//RD fibre texture. This study shows that multi-pass warm rolling has potential to eliminate the costly and time consuming heat treatment steps for small diameter bar products, as the solution treated and aged (STA) properties are achievable in the as rolled condition itself. A systematic study was done to understand the influence of volume fractions and bilayer spacings for metal/nitride multilayer coating using finite element method (FEM). An axisymmetric model was chosen to model the real situation by incorporating metal and substrate plasticity. Combinations of volume fractions and bilayer spacings were chosen for FEM analysis consistent with experimental results. The model was able to predict trends in cracking with respect to layer spacing and volume fraction. Metal layer plasticity is seen to greatly influence the stress field inside nitride. It is seen that the thicker metal induces higher tensile stresses inside nitride and hence leads to lower cracking loads. Thin metal layers < 10 nm were seen to have curved interfaces, and hence, the deformation mode was interfacial delamination in combination with edge cracking. There is an optimum seen with respect to volume fraction similar to 13% and metal layer thickness similar to 30 nm, which give maximum crack resistance.

Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) solders are susceptible to appreciable microstructural coarsening during storage or service. This results in evolution of joint properties over time and thereby influences the long-term reliability of microelectronic packages. Accurate reliability prediction of SAC solders requires prediction of microstructural evolution during service. Microstructure evolution in two SAC solder alloys, such as, Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC 305) and Sn-1.0Ag-0.5 Cu (SAC 105), under different thermomechanical excursions, including isothermal aging at 150 degrees C and thermomechanical cycling (TMC) was studied. In general, between 200 and 600 cycles during TMC, recrystallization of the Sn matrix was observed, along with redistribution of Ag3Sn particles because of dissolution and reprecipitation. These latter effects have not been reported before. It was also observed that the Sn grains recrystallized near precipitate clusters in eutectic channels during extended isothermal aging. The relative orientation of Sn grains in proeutectic colonies did not change during isothermal aging.

Chalcopyrite Cu(In,Al)Se-2 (CIAS) thin films are grown on stainless steel substrate through one-step electrodeposition at room temperature. Indium is partially replaced with aluminum to increase the band gap of CuInSe2 without creating significant change in the original structure. The deposition potential is optimized at -0.8 V (vs. SCE) and annealing of the films is performed in vacuum to remove binary phases present in the as-deposited films. In/Al ratio is varied from 1/9 to 8/2, to find the suitability for solar cell fabrication. For In/Al ratio of less than 8/2, CuAlSe2 phase is formed in the film in addition to the CIAS phase. Depth profile X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the CIAS sample prepared with In/Al ratio of 8/2 in the precursor solution confirmed the existence of single phase CIAS throughout the film. This film showed p-type conductivity while the rest of the samples with In/Al ratio less than 8/2 showed n-type conductivity. The band gap of the film varied from 1.06 to 1.45 eV, with variation in deposition potential. Structural, optical, morphological, compositional and electrical characterizations are carried out to establish the suitability of this film for solar cell fabrication. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. A fracture mechanism map (FMM) is a powerful tool which correlates the fracture behavior of a material to its microstructural characteristics in an explicit and convenient way. In the FMM for solder joints, an effective thickness of the interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) layer (t (eff)) and the solder yield strength (sigma (ys,eff)) are used as abscissa and ordinate axes, respectively, as these two predominantly affect the fracture behavior of solder joints. Earlier, a definition of t (eff), based on the uniform thickness of IMC (t (u)) and the average height of the IMC scallops (t (s)), was proposed and shown to aptly explain the fracture behavior of solder joints on Cu. This paper presents a more general definition of t (eff) that is more widely applicable to a range of metallizations, including Cu and electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG). Using this new definition of t (eff), mode I FMM for SAC387/Cu joints has been updated and its validity was confirmed. A preliminary FMM for SAC387/Cu joints with ENIG metallization is also presented.

Deformation instabilities, such as shear cracking and grain boundary cavitation, which are observed in the secondary tensile region of Ti-6Al-4V alloy during compressive deformation in the (+)-phase field, do not form in Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy when processed under the same conditions. This has been attributed to the microstructural modifications, e.g. the absence of grain boundary and adjacent grain boundary retained layers and a lower proportion of 90(o)-misoriented -colonies that occur with boron addition.

Microstructure and texture are known to undergo drastic modifications due to trace hypoeutectic boron addition (similar to 0.1wt.%) for various titanium alloys e.g. Ti-6Al-4V. The deformation behaviour of such an alloy Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B is investigated in the (+) phase field and compared against that of the base alloy Ti-6Al-4V studied under selfsame conditions. The deformation microstructures for the two alloys display bending and kinking of lamellae in near and softening via globularization of lamella in near phase regimes, respectively. The transition temperature at which pure slip based deformation changes to softening is lower for the boron added alloy. The presence of TiB particles is largely held attributable for the early softening of Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy. The compression texture of both the alloys carry signature of pure phase defamation at lower temperature and phase transformation near the transus temperature. Texture is influenced by a complex interplay of the deformation and transformation processes in the intermediate temperature range. The contribution from phase transformation is prominent for Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy at comparatively lower temperature.

NiTi thin-films were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering from single alloy target (Ni/Ti: 45/55 aL.%). The rate of deposition and thickness of sputter deposited films were maintained to similar to 35 nm min(-1) and 4 mu m respectively. A set of sputter deposited NiTi films were selected for specific chemical treatment with the solution comprising of de-ionized water, HF and HNO3 respectively. The influence of chemical treatment on surface characteristics of NiTi films before and after chemical treatment was investigated for their structure, micro-structure and composition using different analytical techniques. Prior to chemical treatment, the composition of NiTi films using energy dispersive X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), were found to be 51.8 atomic percent of Ti and 48.2 atomic percent of Ni. The structure and morphology of these films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD investigations, demonstrated the presence of dominant Austenite (110) phase along with Martensite phase, for untreated NiTi films whereas some additional diffraction peaks viz. (100), (101), and (200) corresponding to Rutile and Anatase phase of Titanium dioxide (TiO2) along with parent Austenite (110) phase were observed for chemically treated NiTi films. FTIR studies, it can be concluded that chemically treated films have higher tendency to form metal oxide/hydroxide than the untreated NiTi films. XPS investigations, demonstrated the presence of Ni-free surface and formation of a protective metal oxide (TiO2) layer on the surface of the films, in both the cases. The extent of the formation of surface oxide layer onto the surface of NiTi films has enhanced after chemical treatment. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
