Designing and developing ideal catalyst paves the way to green chemistry. The fields of catalysis and nanoscience have been inextricably linked to each other for a long time. Thanks to the recent advances in characterization techniques, the old technology has been revisited with a new scope. The last decade has witnessed a flood of research activity in the field of nanocatalysis, with most of the studies focusing on the effect of size on catalytic properties. This led to the development of much greener catalysts with higher activity, selectivity and greater ease of separation from the reaction medium. This Minireview describes the emerging trends in the field of nanocatalysis with implications towards green chemistry and sustainability.

During V(D)J recombination, RAG (recombination-activating gene) complex cleaves DNA based on sequence specificity. Besides its physiological function, RAG has been shown to act as a structure-specific nuclease. Recently, we showed that the presence of cytosine within the single-stranded region of heteroduplex DNA is important when RAGs cleave on DNA structures. In the present study, we report that heteroduplex DNA containing a bubble region can be cleaved efficiently when present along with a recombination signal sequence (RSS) in cis or trans configuration. The sequence of the bubble region influences RAG cleavage at RSS when present in cis. We also find that the kinetics of RAG cleavage differs between RSS and bubble, wherein RSS cleavage reaches maximum efficiency faster than bubble cleavage. In addition, unlike RSS, RAG cleavage at bubbles does not lead to cleavage complex formation. Finally, we show that the ``nonamer binding region,'' which regulates RAG cleavage on RSS, is not important during RAG activity in non-B DNA structures. Therefore, in the current study, we identify the possible mechanism by which RAG cleavage is regulated when it acts as a structure-specific nuclease. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The problem and related earlier work All the above problems involve the passage of a long chain molecule, through a region in space, where the free energy per segment is higher, thus effectively presenting a barrier for the motion of the molecule. This is what we refer to as the Kramers proble...

The t(14;18) translocation in follicular lymphoma is one of the most common chromosomal translocations. Breaks in chromosome 18 are localized at the 3'-UTR of BCL2 gene or downstream and are mainly clustered in either the major breakpoint region or the minor breakpoint cluster region (mcr). The recombination activating gene (RAG) complex induces breaks at IgH locus of chromosome 14, whereas the mechanism of fragility at BCL2 mcr remains unclear. Here, for the first time, we show that RAGs can nick mcr; however, the mechanism is unique. Three independent nicks of equal efficiency are generated, when both Mg2+ and Mn2+ are present, unlike a single nick during V(D)J recombination. Further, we demonstrate that RAG binding and nicking at the mcr are independent of nonamer, whereas a CCACCTCT motif plays a critical role in its fragility, as shown by sequential mutagenesis. More importantly, we recapitulate the BCL2 mcr translocation and find that mcr can undergo synapsis with a standard recombination signal sequence within the cells, in a RAG-dependent manner. Further, mutation to the CCACCTCT motif abolishes recombination within the cells, indicating its vital role. Hence, our data suggest a novel, physiologically relevant, nonamer-independent mechanism of RAG nicking at mcr, which may be important for generation of chromosomal translocations in humans.

The enantiospecific total synthesis of silphiperfol-6-ene has been accomplished starting from the readily available monoterpene (R)-limonene, employing a rhodium carbenoid insertion into the CH bond of a tertiary methyl group. A substrate dependent competitive insertion of the rhodium carbenoid in the gamma- and beta-CH bonds to form cyclopentanone and cyclobutanones, respectively, has been described. LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 cathode material for lithium ion batteries is synthesized by reaction under autogenic pressure at elevated temperature (RAPET) method. The simple synthesis procedure is time and energy saving, and thus is promising for commercial application. The structure and stability of the material have been characterized by means of XRD and TG-DTA. The electrochemical properties of the LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 cathode are investigated in 2 M Li2SO4 aqueous electrolyte and they are compared to that in an organic electrolyte. A battery cell consisting of LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 as cathode in 2 M Li2SO4 solution is constructed in combination with LiTi2 (PO4)(3) as anode. The cell retained almost constant discharge capacity over hundred cycles. The electrochemical impedance spectral ( EIS) studies in aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes revealed that the mechanism of lithium ion intercalation and deintercalation processes in LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 electrode follow almost similar mechanism in both aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes. The chemical diffusion coefficient was calculated from slow scan rate cyclic voltammetry and EIS. (C) 2012 The Electrochemical Society. DOI: 10.1149/2.075205jes] All rights reserved.

An excellent utility of Schmidt reaction of aldehydes to access corresponding nitriles in an instantaneous reaction is demonstrated. The reaction of aldehydes with NaN3 and TfOH furnishes the corresponding nitriles in near quantitative yields and tolerates a variety of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents on the substrates. Formanilides, a common side product in Schmidt reaction, is not observed in this reaction. Besides these advantages, the salient feature of this reaction is that it exhibits a remarkable chemoselectivity, as acid and ketone functionalities are well tolerated under the reaction conditions. The reaction is easily scalable, high yielding, and nearly instantaneous.

We present a detailed study of a 3+2+1] cascade cyclisation of vinylcyclopropanes (VCP) catalysed by a bromenium species (Brd+?Xd-) generated in situ, which results in the synthesis of chiral bicyclic amidines in a tandem one-pot operation. The formation of amidines involves the ring-opening of VCPs with Br?X, followed by a Ritter-type reaction with chloramine-T and a tandem cyclisation. The reaction has been further extended to vinylcyclobutane systems and involves a 4+2+1] cascade cyclisation with the same reagents. The versatility of the methodology has been demonstrated by careful choice of VCPs and VCBs to yield bicyclo4.3.0]-, -4.3.1]- and -4.4.0]amidines in enantiomerically pure form. On the basis of the experimental observations and DFT calculations, a reasonable mechanism has been put forth to account for the formation of the products and the observed stereoselectivity. We propose the existence of a p-stabilised homoallylic carbocation at the cyclopropane carbon as the reason for high stereoselectivity. DFT studies at B3LYP/6-311+G** and M06-2X/6-31+G* levels of theory in gas-phase calculations suggest the ring-opening of VCP is initiated at the p-complex stage (between the double bond and Br?X). This can be clearly perceived from the solution-phase (acetonitrile) calculations using the polarisable continuum model (PCM) solvation model, from which the extent of the ring opening of VCP was found to be noticeably high. Studies also show that the formation of zero-bridge bicyclic amidines is favoured over other bridged bicyclic amidines. The energetics of competing reaction pathways is compared to explain the product selectivity.

More than 70 molecules of varied nature have been identified in the envelopes of carbon-rich stars through their spectral fingerprints in the microwave or far infrared regions. Many of them are carbon chain molecules and radicals, and a significant number are unique to the circumstellar medium. The determination of relevant laboratory kinetics data is critical to keep up with the development of the high spectral and spatial resolution observations and of the refinement of chemical models. Neutralneutral reactions of the CN radical with unsaturated hydrocarbons could be a dominant route in the formation of cyanopolyynes, even at low temperatures and deserve a detailed laboratory investigation. The approach we have developed aims to bridge the temperature gap between resistively heated flow tubes and shock tubes. The present kinetic measurements are obtained using a new reactor combining a high-enthalpy source with a flow tube and a pulsed laser photolysislaser-induced fluorescence system to probe the undergoing chemical reactions. The high-enthalpy flow tube has been used to measure the rate constant of the reaction of the CN radical with propane (C3H8), propene (C3H6), allene (C3H4), 1,3-butadiene (1,3-C4H6), and 1-butyne (C4H6) over a temperature range extending from 300 to 1200 K. All studied reactions of CN with unsaturated hydrocarbons are rapid, with rate coefficients greater than 10-10 cm3 center dot molecule-1 center dot s-1 and exhibit slight negative temperature dependence above room temperature. A new bis-indolyl-based colorimetric probe has been synthesized. This allows a Michael-type adduct formation for the detection of cyanide ions. The probe shows a remarkable color change from red to colorless upon addition of the cyanide ions in pure water. The cyanide ion reacts with the probe and removes the conjugation of the bis-indolyl moiety of the probe with that of the 4-substituted aromatic ring. This renders the probe colorless. The mechanism of the reaction of the probe with the cyanide ion was established by using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and kinetic studies.

Six new copper metal complexes with formulas Cu(H2O)(2,2'-bpy) (H2L)](2) center dot H4L center dot 4 H2O (1), {Cu(H2O)(2,2'-bpy)-(H3L)}(2)(H2L)]center dot 2H(2)O (2), Cu(H2O)(1,10-phen)(H2L)](2)center dot 6H(2)O (3), Cu(2,2'-bpy)(H2L)](n)center dot nH(2)O (4), Cu(1,10-phen)(H2L)](n)center dot 3nH(2)O (5), and {Cu(2,2'-bpy)(MoO3)}(2)(L)](n)center dot 2nH(2)O (6) have been synthesized starting from p-xylylenediphosphonic acid (H4L) and 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen) as secondary linkers and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. All the complexes were synthesized by hydrothermal methods. A dinuclear motif (Cu-dimer) bridged by phosphonic acid represents a new class of simple building unit (SBU) in the construction of coordination architectures in metal phosphonate chemistry. The initial pH of the reaction mixture induced by the secondary linker plays an important role in the formation of the molecular phosphonates 1, 2, and 3. Temperature dependent hydrothermal synthesis of the compounds 1, 2, and 3 reveals the mechanism of the self assembly of the compounds based on the solubility of the phosphonic acid H4L. Two-dimensional coordination polymers 4, 5, and 6, which are formed by increasing the pH of the reaction mixture, comprise Cu-dimers as nodes, organic (H2L) and inorganic (Mo4O12) ligands as linkers. The void space-areas, created by the (4,4) connected nets in compounds 4 and 5, are occupied by lattice water molecules. Thus compounds 4 and 5 have the potential to accommodate guest species/molecules. Variable temperature magnetic studies of the compounds 3, 4, 5, and 6 reveal the antiferromagnetic interactions between the two Cu(II) ions in the eight membered ring, observed in their crystal structures. A density functional theory (DFT) calculation correlates the conformation of the Cu-dimer ring with the magnitude of the exchange parameter based on the torsion angle of the conformation.

A highly electrophilic ruthenium center in the RuCl(dppe)(2)]OTf] complex brings about the activation of the B H bond in ammonia borane (H3N center dot BH3, AB) and dimethylamine borane (Me2HN center dot BH3, DMAB). At room temperature, the reaction between RuCl(dppe)(2)]OTf] and AB or DMAB results in trans-RuH(eta(2)-H-2)(dppe)(2)]OTf] trans-RuCl(eta(2)-H-2)(dppe)(2)]OTf], and trans-RuH(Cl)(dppe)(2)], as noted in the NMR spectra. Mixing the ruthenium complex and AB or DMAB at low temperature (198/193 K) followed by NMR spectral measurements as the reaction mixture was warmed up to room temperature allowed the observation of various species formed enroute to the final products that were obtained at room temperature. On the basis of the variable-temperature multinuclear NMR spectroscopic studies of these two reactions, the mechanistic insights for B-H bond activation were obtained. In both cases, the reaction proceeds via an eta(1)-B-H moiety bound to the metal center. The detailed mechanistic pathways of these two reactions as studied by NMR spectroscopy are described.

We report a simple, template free and low-temperature hydrothermal reaction pathway using Cu(II) - thiourea complex (prepared in situ from copper (II) chloride and thiourea as precursors) and citric acid as complexing agent to synthesize two-dimensional hierarchical nano-structures of covellite (CuS). The product was characterized with the help of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The concentration of citric acid in the hydrothermal precursor solution was seen to have a profound effect on the nanostructure of the product generated. Based on the outcoming product nano-architecture at different concentration of the ionic surfactant in the hydrothermal precursor solution a possible mechanism suited for reaction and further nucleation is also discussed. We demonstrate the activity of Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta and Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta catalysts towards the CO oxidation and water gas shift (VMS) reaction. Both the catalysts were synthesized in the nano crystalline form by a low temperature sonochemical method and characterized by different techniques such as XRD, FT-Raman, TEM, FT-IR, XPS and BET surface analyzer. H-2-TPR results corroborate the intimate contact between noble metal and Fe ions in the both catalysts that facilitates the reducibility of the support. In the absence of feed CO2 and H-2, nearly 100% conversion of CO to CO2 with 100% H-2 selectivity was observed at 300 degrees C and 260 degrees C respectively, for Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta and Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta catalyst. However, the catalytic performance of Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta deteriorates in the presence of feed CO2 and H-2. The change in the support reducibility is the primary reason for the significant increase in the activity for CO oxidation and WGS reaction. The effect of Fe addition was more significant in Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta than Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta. Based on the spectroscopic evidences and surface phenomena, a hybrid reaction scheme utilizing both surface hydroxyl groups and the lattice oxygen was hypothesized over these catalysts for WGS reaction. The mechanisms based on the formate and redox pathway were used to fit the ldnetic data. The analysis of experimental data shows the redox mechanism is the dominant pathway over these catalysts. Riboflavin tetraacetate-catalyzed aerobic photooxidation of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanol was investigated as a model reaction under blue visible light in different soft gel materials, aiming to establish their potential as reaction vessels for photochemical transformations. Three strategies involving different degrees of organization of the catalyst within the gel network were explored, and the results compared to those obtained in homogeneous and micellar solutions. In general, physical entrapment of both the catalyst and the substrate under optimized concentrations into several hydrogel matrices (including low-molecular-weight and biopolymer-based gels) allowed the photooxidation with conversions between 55 and 100% within 120 min (TOF similar to 0.045-0.08 min(-1); k(obs) similar to 0.011-0.028 min(-1)), albeit with first-order rates ca. 1-3-fold lower than in solution under comparable non-stirred conditions. Remarkably, the organogel made of a cyclohexane-based bisamide gelator in CH3CN not only prevented the photodegradation of the catalyst but also afforded full conversion in less than 60 min (TOF similar to 0.167 min(-1); k(obs) similar to 0.073 min(-1)) without the need of additional proton transfer mediators (e. g., thiourea) as it occurs in CH3CN solutions. In general, the gelators could be recycled without detriment to their gelation ability and reaction rates. Moreover, kinetics could be fine-tuned according to the characteristics of the gel media. For instance, entangled fibrillar networks with relatively high mechanical strength were usually associated with lower reaction rates, whereas wrinkled laminated morphologies seemed to favor the reaction. In addition, the kinetics results showed in most cases a good correlation with the aeration efficiency of the gel media.
