The article presents a generalized analytical expression for description of the integral excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of a ternary system. Twelve constants of the equation are assessed by the least mean squares regressional analysis of the experimental integral excess data of the constituent binaries; three ternary parameters are evaluated by a regressional analysis based on the partial experimental data of a component of the ternary system. The assessed values of the ternary parameters describe the nature of the ternary interaction in the system. Activities and isoactivities of the components in the Ag-Au-Cu system at 1350 K are calculated and found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. This analytical treatment is particularly useful to ternary systems where the thermodynamic data are available from different sources.

Epoxy-terminated polystyrene has been synthesized by radical polymerization using alpha-(t-butylperoxymethyl) styrene (TPMS) as the chain transfer agent. The chain transfer constants were found to be 0.66 and 0.80 at 60 and 70 degrees C, respectively. The presence of epoxy end groups was confirmed by functional group modification of epoxide to aldehyde by treatment with BF3.Et(2)O. Thermal stability of TPMS was followed by differential scanning calorimetry and iodimetry. Thermal decomposition of TPMS in toluene follows first order kinetics with an activation energy of 23 kcal/mol. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

An attempt has been made here to study the sensitivity of the mean and the turbulence structure of the monsoon trough boundary layer to the choice of the constants in the dissipation equation for two stations Delhi and Calcutta, using one-dimensional atmospheric boundary layer model with e-epsilon turbulence closure. An analytical discussion of the problems associated with the constants of the dissipation equation is presented. It is shown here that the choice of the constants in the dissipation equation is quite crucial and the turbulence structure is very sensitive to these constants. The modification of the dissipation equation adopted by earlier studies, that is, approximating the Tke generation (due to shear and buoyancy production) in the epsilon-equation by max (shear production, shear + buoyancy production), can be avoided by a suitable choice of the constants suggested here. The observed turbulence structure is better simulated with these constants. The turbulence structure simulation with the constants recommended by Aupoix et al (1989) (which are interactive in time) for the monsoon region is shown to be qualitatively similar to the simulation obtained with the constants suggested here, thus implying that no universal constants exist to regulate dissipation rate. Simulations of the mean structure show little sensitivity to the type of the closure parameterization between e-l and e-epsilon closures. However the turbulence structure simulation with e-epsilon closure is far better compared to the e-l model simulations. The model simulations of temperature profiles compare quite well with the observations whenever the boundary layer is well mixed (neutral) or unstable. However the models are not able to simulate the nocturnal boundary layer (stable) temperature profiles. Moisture profiles are simulated reasonably better. With one-dimensional models, capturing observed wind variations is not up to the mark.

We report here the results of structural and vibrational studies on the solid solution Fe1 ? xNixPS3 (1 greater-or-equal, slanted x greater-or-equal, slanted 0) systems. From the structural analysis, we show that there is a lattice compaction as the composition x is varied from 0 to 1, the basic lattice symmetry being maintained. We find that the compaction is more in the basal plane. These subtle structural changes are also reflected in the vibrational bands. We observed splitting of certain bands due to these small changes in the lattice constants, which we explained as arising from a correlation splitting. These changes in the vibrational bands have also been seen on cooling where there is a preferential thermal compaction in the basal plane compared to that perpendicular to the plane.

Raman experiments have been carried out on single crystals of BaTiO3 as a function of pressure up to 3.5 GPa across the ferroelectric (tetragonal) to paraelectric (cubic) phase transition. The unusual features in the Raman spectra associated with the interference effects due to coupling of the three A1(TO) phonons are studied quantitatively to obtain the pressure dependence of the line shape parameters and the coupling constants. The frequencies of the middle and highest-frequency modes as well as the linewidth of the middle mode show interesting pressure dependence.

The dependence of optical constants, structure and composition of titania thin films on the process parameters has been investigated. Films were deposited using both reactive electron beam evaporation and ion Assisted Deposition(IAD). If has been observed that the refractive index of IAD films is higher than that for the reactively deposited films, without much difference in the extinction coefficient. Electron paramagnetic resonance has been used to estimate qualitatively the presence of non-stoichiometry in the films. It has been found that these spectra correlate very well the optical behaviour of the films. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the neutral oxygen deposited films were stress free, while the IAD films showed tensile stress. The lattice parameters showed anisotropic change with ion beam parameters.

Four new (dialkylamino)pyridine-functionalized surfactants have been synthesized. Micelles were generated either from the surfactant alone in aqueous buffer (pH 8.5 or 9.0) or by comicellization in 1 x 10(-3)-1 x 10(-4) M aqueous micellar cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) solution at pH 8.5 or 9.0. Such aggregates were used to cleave p-nitrophenyl alkanoates or p-nitrophenyl diphenylphosphate. The nucleophilic reagents and the second-order ''catalytic'' rate constants toward esterolysis of the substrate p-nitrophenyl octanoate (at 25 degrees C, pH 9.0) were [cat.] = 1 x 10(-4) M, [CTABr] = 1 x 10(-3) M, and k(cat.) = 440.13 M(-1) s(-1) for 1b, [cat.] = 5 x 10(-4) M, [CTABr] = 5 x 10(-4) M, and k(cat.) = 30.8 M(-1) s(-1) for 1c, [cat.] = 5 x 10(-4) M, [CTABr] = 5 x 10(-3) M, and k(cat.) = 183.64 M(-1) s(-1) for 2a, and [cat.] = 3 x 10(-4) M and k(cat.) = 54.1 M(-1) s(-1) for 2b. The catalytic systems, especially 1b/CTABr and 2a/CTABr, also conferred significantly greater reactivity toward the esters derived from alkanoic acids of moderate chain length (C-6-C-10) during hydrolytic cleavages relative to their shorter and longer counterparts. Importantly, the catalytic systems comprising the coaggregates of either neutral 1b and CTABr (1:10) or anionic 2a and CTABr (1:10) conformed to the Michaelis-Menten kinetic scheme and demonstrated turnover behavior in the presence of excess substrate.

It has recently been proposed that the broad spectrum of interannual variability in the tropics with a peak around four years results from an interaction between the linear low-frequency oscillatory mode of the coupled system and the nonlinear higher-frequency modes of the system. In this study we determine the Lyapunov exponents of the conceptual model consisting of a nonlinear low-order model coupled to a linear oscillator for various values of the coupling constants.

A detailed theoretical study of solvation dynamics in water is presented. The motivation of the present study comes from the recent experimental observation that the dynamics of solvation of an ion in water is ultrafast and the solvation time correlation function decays with a time constant of about 55 fs. The slower decay in the long time can be described by a sum of two exponentials with time constants equal to 126 and 880 fs. The molecular theory (developed earlier) predicts a time constant equal to 52 fs for the initial Gaussian decay and time constants equal to 134 and 886 fs for the two exponential components at the long time. This nearly perfect agreement is obtained by using the most detailed dynamical information available in the literature. The present study emphasizes the importance of the intermolecular vibrational band originating from the O...O stretching mode of the OH...O units in the initial dynamics and raises several interesting questions regarding the nature of the decay of this mode. We have also studied the effects of isotope substitution on solvation dynamics. It is predicted that a significant isotope effect may be observed in the long time. The experimental results have also been compared with the prediction of the dynamic mean spherical approximation (DMSA); the agreement is not satisfactory at the long time. It is further found that the molecular theory and the DMSA lead to virtually identical results if the translational modes of the solvent molecules are neglected in the former. DMSA has also been used to investigate the dynamics of solvation of a dipolar solute in water. It is found that the dynamics of dipolar solvation exhibit features rather different from those of ion solvation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Members of the Ba2Zn1-xCdxTa2O9 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) series have been synthesized by solid state reactions at 1473K. Powder x-ray diffraction studies show a cubic perovskite cell with a similar to 4.1 Angstrom which increases with increase in x. Electron diffraction studies show the presence of hexagonal ordered perovskite structure in addition to the cubic structure seen by x-rays, the x = 0.5 composition showing more ordered crystallites. These samples show high dielectric constants with a maximum (epsilon(r) = 30 at 1 kHz) for the x = 0.5 member. The dielectric loss increases with increase in x at all the frequencies under study.

The H-1 NMR spectra of N-(4-methylphenyl)-2-pyridinecarboxamide and N-(4-methyl-phenyl)-3-pyridine carboxamide in CDCl3 and (CD3)(2)CO have been analysed with the help of the COSY spectra. Accurate H-1 chemical shifts and coupling constants have been obtained from the simulated spectra. From H-1 NMR and Nuclear Overhauser Enhancement (NOE) measurements the molecular conformations are inferred. The pyridyl ring is apparently coplanar with the amide group while the 3-pyridyl ring is nearly perpendicular to the amide plane so that the amide proton is nearer to the 2-pyridyl proton H2 than to H4. The orientation of the 4-methylphenyl group could not be determined.

Cure kinetics for the formation of copolyurethane networks of various compositions based on hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene(HTPB), poly(12-hydroxy stearic acid-co-TMP) ester polyol(PEP), and different isocyanates has been studied through viscosity build up during the cure reaction. The viscosity (N)-time (t) plots conform to the equation N = ae(bt), where a and b are empirical constants, dependent on the composition and the nature of the polyols and the isocyanates. The rate constants (b) for viscosity build up, evaluated from the slopes of dN/dt versus N plots at different temperatures, were found to vary significantly from 0.0073 to 0.25 min(-1); and the activation energies for gelation were found to be in the range 20 to 40 kJ mol(-1). The results have been interpreted in terms of the dependence of the rate constants on structural characteristics of the prepolymers. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The understanding and control of anisotropy in Fe films grown on cubic systems such as GaAs and MgO has been of interest from the point of view of applications in devices. We report magnetic anisotropy studies on Fe/GaAs(001) and Fe/MgO/GaAs(001) prepared by pulsed laser deposition. In Fe/GaAs(001), magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements revealed a dominant uniaxial anisotropy for Fe thickness less than 20 monolayers (ML) and this was confirmed by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies. Multiple steps in the hysteresis loops were observed for Fe films of thickness 20 and 25 ML. Whereas, in Fe/MgO/GaAs(001), even at 25 ML of Fe, the uniaxial anisotropy remained dominant. The anisotropy constants obtained from FMR spectra have shown that the relative strength of uniaxial anisotropy is higher as compared to the cubic anisotropy constant in the case of Fe/MgO/GaAs(001). We report the optical spectra and single crystal magnetic susceptibility of the one-dimensional antiferromagnet KFeS2. Measurements have been carried out to ascertain the spin state of Fe3+ and the nature of the magnetic interactions in this compound. The optical spectra and magnetic susceptibility could be consistently interpreted using a S = 1/2 spin ground state for the Fe3+ ion. The features in the optical spectra have been assigned to transitions within the d-electron manifold of the Fe3+ ion, and analysed in the strong field limit of the ligand field theory. The high temperature isotropic magnetic susceptibility is typical of a low-dimensional system and exhibits a broad maximum at similar to 565 K. The susceptibility shows a well defined transition to a three dimensionally ordered antiferromagnetic state at T-N = 250 K. The intra and interchain exchange constants, J and J', have been evaluated from the experimental susceptibilities using the relationship between these quantities, and chi(max), T-max, and T-N for a spin 1/2 one-dimensional chain. The values are J = -440.71 K, and J' = 53.94 K. Using these values of J and J', the susceptibility of a spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain was calculated. A non-interacting spin wave model was used below T-N. The susceptibility in the paramagnetic region was calculated from the theoretical curves for an infinite S = 1/2 chain. The calculated susceptibility compares well with the experimental data of KFeS2. Further support for a one-dimensional spin 1/2 model comes from the fact that the calculated perpendicular susceptibility at 0K (2.75 x 10(-4) emu/mol) evaluated considering the zero point reduction in magnetization from spin wave theory is close to the projected value (2.7 x 10(-4) emu/mol) obtained from the experimental data.

3,6-Dibromo-N-ethylcarbazole (DBNEC) and its polymeric analogue poly-3,6-dibromovinylcarbazole (PDBVCz) were studied by transient absorption spectroscopy. The transient absorption spectrum of the 3,6-dibromo-N-ethylcarbazole radical cation and decay rate constants of radical cations of 3,6-dibromo-N-ethylcarbazole and its polymeric analogue are presented. In the case of unsubstituted carbazole, the ratio of the yield of radical cation of monomer to polymer is 2.0, whereas in the case of PDBVCz, under the same experimental conditions, the yield of the radical cation is an order of magnitude less in comparison with the monomer model compound DBNEC. This drastic difference in yield has been correlated to the difference in the conformational structure of the polymer as evidenced by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
