This work explores the preparation of nanocrystalline Cr3+ (1-5 mol%) doped CaSiO3 phosphors by solution combustion process and study of its photoluminescence (PL) behavior. The nanopowders are well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy. PXRD results confirm monoclinic phase upon calcination at 950 degrees C for 3 h. SEM micrographs indicates that the powder is highly porous and agglomerated. The TEM images show the powder to consist of spherical shaped particles of size similar to 30-60 nm. Upon 323 nm excitation, the emission profile of CaSiO3:Cr3+ exhibits a narrow red emission peak at 641 nm due to E-2 -> (4)A(2) transition and broad band at 722 nm due to T-4(2g) -> (4)A(2g). It is observed that PL intensity increases with increase in Cr3+ concentration and highest PL intensity is observed for 3 mol% doped sample. The PL intensity decreases with further increase in Cr3+ doping. This decrease in PL intensity beyond 3 mol% is ascribed to concentration quenching. Racah parameters are calculated to describe the effects of electron-electron repulsion within the crystal lattice. The parameters show 21% reduction in the Racah parameter of free ion and the complex, indicating the moderate nephelauxetic effect in the lattice. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Non-invasive 3D imaging in materials and medical research involves methodologies such as X-ray imaging, MRI, fluorescence and optical coherence tomography, NIR absorption imaging, etc., providing global morphological/density/absorption changes of the hidden components. However, molecular information of such buried materials has been elusive. In this article we demonstrate observation of molecular structural information of materials hidden/buried in depth using Raman scattering. Typically, Raman spectroscopic observations are made at fixed collection angles, such as, 906, 1356, and 1806, except in spatially offset Raman scattering (SORS) (only back scattering based collection of photons) and transmission techniques. Such specific collection angles restrict the observations of Raman signals either from or near the surface of the materials. Universal Multiple Angle Raman Spectroscopy (UMARS) presented here employs the principle of (a) penetration depth of photons and then diffuse propagation through non-absorbing media by multiple scattering and (b) detection of signals from all the observable angles.

Flexible poly(vinylidene chloride-co-vinyl chloride)/TiO2 nanocomposite films were fabricated and their dielectric properties were studied. The structural characterization of the composites was carried out using various spectroscopic and electron microscopic techniques. From the thermal analysis of the composites, an improvement in the thermal properties was observed for the composites, as compared to the neat polymer. An increase in the DC conductivity was also observed in the composites, which was due to the tunneling of charge carriers. Furthermore, it was observed that the optimal loading of titania in the matrix was required, above which the properties of the composites showed deterioration. The study of the dielectric properties of the composites supports their use in microelectronic devices as separator in charge storage devices and in transistors.

Early diagnosis of disease is important, because therapeutic intervention is most successful before it spread to the subject. The best health screenings method could be the blood test because the blood contains thousands of bio-molecules coming as by-products from the diseased part of the organism and would be non-invasive approach. The major limitation of this approach is the very low concentrations of the analytes need to be detected. Raman spectroscopy has been proven as one of the cutting edge technique applied in the field of histology, cytology and clinical chemistry. The primary obstacle of Raman spectroscopy is the low signal intensities. One of the promising approaches to overcome that is surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) which has opened novel opportunities for chemical and biomedical analytics. Albumin is one of the most abundant proteins in blood, produced by liver. The state of albumin in serum determines the health of the liver and kidney. Serum albumin helps to transport many small molecules such as fatty acids, bilirubin, calcium, drugs through the blood. In this study, SERS is being used for the quantification and to understand of binding mechanism serum albumin.

In this article, we aim at reducing the error rate of the online Tamil symbol recognition system by employing multiple experts to reevaluate certain decisions of the primary support vector machine classifier. Motivated by the relatively high percentage of occurrence of base consonants in the script, a reevaluation technique has been proposed to correct any ambiguities arising in the base consonants. Secondly, a dynamic time-warping method is proposed to automatically extract the discriminative regions for each set of confused characters. Class-specific features derived from these regions aid in reducing the degree of confusion. Thirdly, statistics of specific features are proposed for resolving any confusions in vowel modifiers. The reevaluation approaches are tested on two databases (a) the isolated Tamil symbols in the IWFHR test set, and (b) the symbols segmented from a set of 10,000 Tamil words. The recognition rate of the isolated test symbols of the IWFHR database improves by 1.9 %. For the word database, the incorporation of the reevaluation step improves the symbol recognition rate by 3.5 % (from 88.4 to 91.9 %). This, in turn, boosts the word recognition rate by 11.9 % (from 65.0 to 76.9 %). The reduction in the word error rate has been achieved using a generic approach, without the incorporation of language models.

Two new 2-(2-aminophenyl)benzimidazole-based HSO4- ion selective receptors, 6-(4-nitrophenyl)-5,6-dihydrobenzo4,5]imidazo1,2-c]quinazoline (L1H) and 6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5,6-dihydrobenzo4,5]imidazo1,2-c] quinazoline (L2H), and their 1 : 1 molecular complexes with HSO4- were prepared in a facile synthetic method and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques along with the detailed structural analysis of L1H by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Both receptors (L1H and L2H) behave as highly selective chemosensor for HSO4- ions at biological pH in ethanol-water HEPES buffer (1/5) (v/v) medium over other anions such as F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, AcO-, H2PO4-, N-3(-) and ClO4-. Theoretical and experimental studies showed that the emission efficiency of the receptors (L1H and L2H) was tuned successfully through single point to ratiometric detection by employing the substituent effects. Using 3 sigma method the LOD for HSO4- ions were found to be 18.08 nM and 14.11 nM for L1H and L2H, respectively, within a very short responsive time (15-20 s) in 100 mM HEPES buffer (ethanol-water: 1/5, v/v). Comparison of the utility of the probes (L1H and L2H) as biomarkers for the detection of intracellular HSO4- ions concentrations under a fluorescence microscope has also been included and both probes showed no cytotoxic effect.

In GaAs-based pseudomorphic high-electron mobility transistor device structures, strain and composition of the InxGa1 (-) As-x channel layer are very important as they influence the electronic properties of these devices. In this context, transmission electron microscopy techniques such as (002) dark-field imaging, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) imaging, scanning transmission electron microscopy-high angle annular dark field (STEM-HAADF) imaging and selected area diffraction, are useful. A quantitative comparative study using these techniques is relevant for assessing the merits and limitations of the respective techniques. In this article, we have investigated strain and composition of the InxGa1 (-) As-x layer with the mentioned techniques and compared the results. The HRTEM images were investigated with strain state analysis. The indium content in this layer was quantified by HAADF imaging and correlated with STEM simulations. The studies showed that the InxGa1 (-) As-x channel layer was pseudomorphically grown leading to tetragonal strain along the 001] growth direction and that the average indium content (x) in the epilayer is similar to 0.12. We found consistency in the results obtained using various methods of analysis.

Depalladation of the monoalkyne-inserted cyclopalldated guanidines (kappa 2(C,N)Pd(2,6-Me2C5H3N)Br] (I and II) in PhCl under reflux conditions and that of the dialkyne-inserted cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N):eta(2)(C=C)PdBr] (III) in pyridine under reflux conditions afforded a guanidine-containing indole (1), imidaziondole (2), and benzazepine (3) in 80%, 67%, and 76%, yields, respectively. trans-L2PdBr2] species (L = 2,6-Me2C5H3N, C5H5N) were also isolated in the aforementioned reactions in 35%, 42%, and 40% yields. Further , the reaction of the cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (IV) with AgBF4 in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic pincer type cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(3)(C,N,O)Pd(MeCN)]BF4] (4) in 85% yield and this palladacycle upon crystallization in MeCN and the reaction of kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (V) with AgBf(4) in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic palladacycles {kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(MeCN)(2)]BF4](5 and 6) in 89% and 91% yields, respectively. The separate reactions of 4 with 2 equiv of methyl phenylpropiolate (MPP) or diphenylacetylene (DPA) and the reaction of 5 with 2 equiv of MPP in PhCl at 110 degrees C afforded the guanidine-containing quinazolinium tetrafluoroborate 7 in 25-32% yields. The reaction of 6 with 2 equiv of DPA under otherwise identical conditions afforded the unsymmetrically substituted guanidinium tetrafluoroborate 8, containing a highly substituted naphthalene unit, in 82% yield. Compounds 1-8 were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, and all compounds except 4 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Molecular structure of 2 and 3 are nove, as the framework in the former arises due to the formation of two C-N bonds upon depalladation while the butadienyl unit in the latter revealed cis,cis stereochemistry, a-feature unprecedented in alkyne insertion chemistry. Plausible pathways for the formation of heterocycles/carbocycles are proposed. the influence of substitutents on the aryl rings fo the cyclopalladated guanidine moiety and those on alkynes upon the nature of the products in addressed. Heterocycles 1 and 7 revealed the presence of two rotamers in about a 1.00:0.43 ratio in CDCl3 and in about a 1.00:0.14 ratio in CD3OD, respectively, as detected by H-1 NMR spectroscopy while in CD3CN and DMSO-d(6) (1) and CD3CN and CDCl3 (7), these heterocycles revealed the presence of a single rotamer. These spectral features are attributed to the restricted C-N single-bond rotation of the CN3 unit of the guanidine moiety, which possibly arises from steric constraint due to the formation of a N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bond with CDCl3 (1) and N-H center dot center dot center dot O and O-D center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds with CD3OD (7).

In composite solid propellants, the fuel and oxidizer are held together by a polymer binder. Among the different types of polymeric binders used in solid propellants, hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is considered as the most versatile. HTPB is conventionally cured using isocyanates to form polyurethanes. However, the incompatibility of isocyanates with energetic oxidizers such as ammonium dinitramide and hydrazinium nitroformate, the short pot life of the propellant slurry, and undesirable side reactions with moisture are limiting factors which adversely affect the mechanical properties of HTPB based propellant. With an aim of resolving these problems, HTPB was chemically transformed to azidoethoxy carbonyl amine terminated polybutadiene and propargyloxy carbonyl amine terminated polybutadiene by adopting appropriate synthesis strategies and characterizing them by spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. This is the first report on 1,3-dipolar addition reaction involving azide and alkyne end groups for cross-linking HTPB. The blend of these two polymers underwent curing under mild temperature (60 degrees C) conditions through 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction resulting in triazoletriazoline networks. The curing parameters were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic parameter, viz., activation energy, was computed to be 107.6 kJ/mol, the preexponential factor was 2.79 x 10(12) s-(1), and the rate constant at 60 degrees C was computed to be 3.64 x 10-(5) s-(1). The cure profile at a given temperature was predicted using the kinetic parameters. Rheological studies revealed that the gel time for curing through the 1,3-dipolar addition is 280 min compared to 120 min for curing through the urethane route. The mechanical properties of the resultant cured polybutadiene network were superior to those of polyurethanes. The cured triazolinetriazole polymer network exhibited biphasic morphology with two glass transitions (T-g) at -56 and 42 degrees C in contrast to the polyurethane which exhibited a single transition at -60 degrees C. This was corroborated by associated morphological changes observed by scanning probe microscopy. The propellant processed using this binder has the advantages of improved pot life as indicated by the end of the mix viscosity which is 165 Pas as compared with 352 Pas for the polyurethane system along with a slow build- up rate. The mechanical properties of the propellant are superior to polyurethane with an improvement of 14% in tensile strength, 22% enhancement in elongation at break, and 12% in modulus.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic composites were fabricated through vacuum resin infusion technology by adopting two different processing conditions, viz., vacuum only in the first and vacuum plus external pressure in the next, in order to generate two levels of void-bearing samples. They were relatively graded as higher and lower void-bearing ones, respectively. Microscopy and C-scan techniques were utilized to describe the presence of voids arising from the two different processing parameters. Further, to determine the influence of voids on impact behavior, the fabricated +45 degrees/90 degrees/-45 degrees composite samples were subjected to low velocity impacts. The tests show impact properties like peak load and energy to peak load registering higher values for the lower void-bearing case where as the total energy, energy for propagation and ductility indexes were higher for the higher void-bearing ones. Fractographic analysis showed that higher void-bearing samples display lower number of separation of layers in the laminate. These and other results are described and discussed in this report.

The problem of modelling the transient response of an elastic-perfectly-plastic cantilever beam, carrying an impulsively loaded tip mass, is,often referred to as the Parkes cantilever problem 25]; The permanent deformation of a cantilever struck transversely at its tip, Proc. R. Soc. A., 288, pp. 462). This paradigm for classical modelling of projectile impact on structures is re-visited and updated using the mesh-free method, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). The purpose of this study is to investigate further the behaviour of cantilever beams subjected to projectile impact at its tip, by considering especially physically real effects such as plastic shearing close to the projectile, shear deformation, and the variation of the shear strain along the length and across the thickness of the beam. Finally, going beyond macroscopic structural plasticity, a strategy to incorporate physical discontinuity (due to crack formation) in SPH discretization is discussed and explored in the context of tip-severance of the cantilever beam. Consequently, the proposed scheme illustrates the potency for a more refined treatment of penetration mechanics, paramount in the exploration of structural response under ballistic loading. The objective is to contribute to formulating a computational modelling framework within which transient dynamic plasticity and even penetration/failure phenomena for a range of materials, structures and impact conditions can be explored ab initio, this being essential for arriving at suitable tools for the design of armour systems. The current study involves synthesis of a series of Tb3+ doped ZrO2 nanophosphors by solution combustion method using oxalyl dihydrazide as fuel. The as-formed ZrO2:Tb3+ nanophosphors having different concentrations of Tb3+ (1-11 mol%) were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-Visible spectroscopic techniques and the materials were subjected to photoluminescence and photocatalytic dye decolorization studies. The PXRD analysis indicates the formation of tetragonal symmetry up to 5 mol% concentration of Tb3+. Further increase in Tb3+ concentration has lead to cubic phase formation and the same was confirmed by Rietveld refinement analysis. SEM images revealed that material was highly porous in nature comprising of large voids and cracks with irregular morphology. TEM and SAED images clearly confirm the formation of high quality tetragonal nanocrystals. The emissive properties of nanophosphors were found to be dependent on Tb3+ dopant concentration. The green emission of the material was turned to white emission with the increase of Tb3+ ion concentration. The photocatalytic activities of these nanophosphors were probed for the decolorization of Congo red under UV and Sunlight irradiation. All the photocatalysts showed enhanced activity under UV light compared to Sunlight. The photocatalyst with 7 mol% Tb3+ showed enhanced activity attributed to effective separation of charge carriers due to phase transformation from tetragonal to cubic. The influence of crystallite size and PL on charge carrier trapping-recombination dynamics was investigated. The study successfully demonstrates synthesis of tetragonal and cubic ZrO2:Tb3+ green nanophosphors with superior photoluminescence and photocatalytic activities. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Chiral auxiliaries are used for NMR spectroscopic study of enantiomers. Often the presence of impurities, severe overlap of peaks, excessive line broadening and complex multiplicity pattern restricts the chiral analysis using 1D H-1 NMR spectrum. There are few approaches to resolve the overlapped peaks. One approach is to use suitable chiral auxiliary, which induces large chemical shift difference between the discriminated peaks (Delta delta(R,S)) and minimize the overlap. Another direction of approach is to design appropriate NMR experiments to circumvent some of these problems, viz, enhancing spectral resolution, unravelling the superimposed spectra of enantiomers, and reduction of spectral complexity. Large number of NMR techniques, such as two dimensional selective F-1 decoupling, RES-TOCSY, multiple quantum detection, frequency selective homodecoupling, band selective homodecoupling, broadband homodecoupling, etc. have been reported for such a purpose. Many of these techniques have aided in chiral analysis for molecules of diverse functionality in the presence of chiral auxiliaries. The present review summarizes the recently reported NMR experimental methodologies, with a special emphasis on the work carried out in authors' laboratory.
