The migration of a metal atom in a metal olefin complex from one pi face of the olefin to the opposite pi face has been rarely documented. Gladysz and co-workers showed that such a movement is indeed possible in monosubstituted chiral Re olefin complexes, resulting in diastereomerization. Interestingly, this isomerization occurred without dissociation, and on the basis of kinetic isotope effects, the involvement of a trans C-H bond was indicated. Either oxidative addition or an agostic interaction of the vinylic C-H(D) bond with the metal could account for the experimentally observed kinetic isotope effect. In this study we compute the free energy of activation for the migration of Re from one enantioface of the olefin to the other through various pathways. On the basis of DFT calculations at the B3LYP level we show that a trans (C-H)center dot center dot center dot Re interaction and trans C-H oxidative addition provide a nondissociative path for the diastereomerization. The trans (C-H)center dot center dot center dot Re interaction path is computed to be more favorable by 2.3 kcal mol(-1) than the oxidative addition path. While direct experimental evidence was not able to discount the migration of the metal through the formation of a eta(2)-arene complex (conducted tour mechanism), computational results at the B3LYP level show that it is energetically more expensive. Surprisingly, a similar analysis carried out at the M06 level computes a lower energy path for the conducted tour mechanism and is not consistent with the experimental isotope effects observed. Metal-(C-H) interactions and oxidative additions of the metal into C-H bonds are closely separated in energy and might contribute to unusual fluxional processes such as this diastereomerization.

Rammed earth is a monolithic construction and the construction process involves compaction of processed soil in progressive layers in a rigid formwork. Durable and thinner load bearing walls can be built using stabilised rammed earth. Use of inorganic additives such as cement for rammed earth walls has been in practice since the last 5-6 decades and cement stabilised rammed earth (CSRE) buildings can be seen across the world. The paper deals with the construction aspects, structural design and embodied energy analysis of a three storey load bearing school building complex. The CSRE school complex consists of 15 classrooms, an open air theatre and a service block. The complex has a built-up area of 1691.3 m(2) and was constructed employing manual construction techniques. This case study shows low embodied energy of 1.15 GJ/m(2) for the CSRE building as against 3-4 GJ/m(2) for conventional burnt clay brick load bearing masonry buildings. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. We report the synthesis as well as structural and physical properties of the bulk polycrystalline FeTe and FeTe0.5Se0.5 compounds. These samples are synthesised by the solid state-reaction method via vacuum encapsulation. Both studied compounds are crystallized in a tetragonal phase with space group P4/nmm. The parent FeTe compound shows an anomaly in resistivity measurement at around 78 K, which is due to the structural change along with a magnetic phase transition. The superconductivity in the FeTe0.5Se0.5 sample at 13 K is confirmed by the resistivity measurements. DC magnetisation along with an isothermal (M-H) loop shows that FeTe0.5Se0.5 possesses bulk superconductivity. The upper critical field is estimated through resistivity rho (T,H) measurements using Gingzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is above 50 T with 50 % resistivity drop criterion. The origin of the resistive transition broadening under magnetic field is investigated by thermally activated flux flow. The magnetic field dependence of the activation energy of the flux motion is discussed.

An experimental charge-density analysis of pyrazinamide (a first line antitubercular drug) was performed using high-resolution X-ray diffraction data (sin theta/lambda)(max) = 1.1 angstrom(-1)] measured at 100 (2) K. The structure was solved by direct methods using SHELXS97 and refined by SHELXL97. The total electron density of the pyrazinamide molecule was modeled using the Hansen-Coppens multipole formalism implemented in the XD software. The topological properties of electron density determined from the experiment were compared with the theoretical results obtained from CRYSTAL09 at the B3LYP/6-31G** level of theory. The crystal structure was stabilized by N-H center dot center dot center dot N and N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, in which the N3-H3B center dot center dot center dot N1 and N3-H3A center dot center dot center dot O1 interactions form two types of dimers in the crystal. Hirshfeld surface analysis was carried out to analyze the intermolecular interactions. The fingerprint plot reveals that the N center dot center dot center dot H and O center dot center dot center dot H hydrogen-bonding interactions contribute 26.1 and 18.4%, respectively, of the total Hirshfeld surface. The lattice energy of the molecule was calculated using density functional theory (B3LYP) methods with the 6-31G** basis set. The molecular electrostatic potential of the pyrazinamide molecule exhibits extended electronegative regions around O1, N1 and N2. The existence of a negative electrostatic potential (ESP) region just above the upper and lower surfaces of the pyrazine ring confirm the pi-electron cloud.

Here, we present the results of temperature dependent dielectric studies on chemical solution processed Zr-doped BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films deposited on Pt/Si substrates. We find that in contrast to the undoped BFO films, Zr doping at Fe-site suppresses the low frequency dielectric relaxation originating from the grain boundaries, attributed to the increased dipolar rigidity due to stronger Zr-O bonds. Temperature dependent dc conductivity obtained from impedance and modulus analyses shows two distinct conduction processes occurring inside the grains. At temperature below similar to 423K, conductivity is nearly temperature independent, while in the high temperature regime (above similar to 423K), conduction is governed by the long range movement of oxygen vacancies with an activation energy of similar to 1eV. This paper attempts to gain an understanding of the effect of lamellar length scale on the mechanical properties of two-phase metal-intermetallic eutectic structure. We first develop a molecular dynamics model for the in-situ grown eutectic interface followed by a model of deformation of Al-Al2Cu lamellar eutectic. Leveraging the insights obtained from the simulation on the behaviour of dislocations at different length scales of the eutectic, we present and explain the experimental results on Al-Al2Cu eutectic with various different lamellar spacing. The physics behind the mechanism is further quantified with help of atomic level energy model for different length scale as well as different strain. An atomic level energy partitioning of the lamellae and the interface regions reveals that the energy of the lamellae core are accumulated more due to dislocations irrespective of the length-scale. Whereas the energy of the interface is accumulated more due to dislocations when the length-scale is smaller, but the trend is reversed when the length-scale is large beyond a critical size of about 80 nm. Tetracene is an important conjugated molecule for device applications. We have used the diagrammatic valence bond method to obtain the desired states, in a Hilbert space of about 450 million singlets and 902 million triplets. We have also studied the donor/acceptor (D/A)-substituted tetracenes with D and A groups placed symmetrically about the long axis of the molecule. In these cases, by exploiting a new symmetry, which is a combination of C-2 symmetry and electron-hole symmetry, we are able to obtain their low-lying states. In the case of substituted tetracene, we find that optically allowed one-photon excitation gaps reduce with increasing D/A strength, while the lowest singlet triplet gap is only wealdy affected. In all the systems we have studied, the excited singlet state, S-i, is at more than twice the energy of the lowest triplet state and the second triplet is very close to the S-1 state. Thus, donor-acceptor-substituted tetracene could be a good candidate in photovoltaic device application as it satisfies energy criteria for singlet fission. We have also obtained the model exact second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients using the correction vector method, and we find that the SHG responses increase with the increase in D/A strength.

We have synthesized Ag-Cu alloy nanoparticles of four different compositions by using the laser ablation technique with the target under aqueous medium. Following this, we report a morphological transition in the nanoparticles from a normal two-phase microstructure to a structure with random segregation and finally a core shell structure at small sizes as a function of Cu concentration. To illustrate the composition dependence of morphology, we report observations carried out on nanoparticles of two different sizes: similar to 5 and similar to 20 nm. The results could be rationalized through the thermodynamic modeling of free energy of phase mixing and wettability of the alloying phases.

Innovative bi-electrolyte solid-state cells incorporating single crystal CaF2 and composition-graded solid electrolyte (LaF3) y (CaF2) 1-y (y = 0 to 0.32) were used for measurement of the standard Gibbs energy of formation of hexagonal La0.885Al11.782O19 and cubic LaAlO3 from component binary oxides La2O3 and alpha-Al2O3 in the temperature range from 875 to 1175 K. The cells were designed based on experimentally verified relevant phase relations in the systems La2O3-Al2O3LaF3 and CaF2-LaF3. The results can be summarized as: 5.891 alpha-Al2O3 + 0.4425 La2O3 (A-rare earth)-> La0.885Al11.782O19 (hex), Delta G(f(ox))(degrees)(+/- 2005)/Jmol(-1) = -80982 + 7.313(T/K); 1/2 La2O3 (A-rare earth) + 1/2 a-Al2O3 -> LaAlO3 (cubic), Delta G(f(ox))(degrees)(+/- 2100)/Jmol(-1) = -59810 + 4.51(T/K). Electron probe microanalysis was used to ascertain the non-stoichiometric range of the hexaaluminate phase. The results are critically analyzed in the light of earlier electrochemical measurements. Several imperfections in the electrochemical cells used by former investigators are identified. Data obtained in the study for LaAlO3 are consistent with calorimetric enthalpy of formation and entropy derived from heat capacity data. Estimated are the standard entropy and the standard enthalpy of formation from elements of hexagonal La0.885Al11.782O19 and rhombohedral LaAlO3 at 298.15 K. c 2014 The Electrochemical Society. Stoichiometric tin (II) sulfide (SnS) nano-structures were synthesized on SnS(010)/glass substrates using a simple and low-temperature chemical solution method, and their physical properties were investigated. The as-synthesized SnS nanostructures exhibited orthorhombic crystal structure and most of the nanocrystals are preferentially oriented along the <010> direction. These nanostructures showed p-type electrical conductivity and high electrical resistivity of 93 Omega cm. SnS nanostructures exhibited a direct optical band gap of 1.43 eV. While increasing the surrounding temperature from 20 to 150 degrees C, the electrical resistivity of the structures decreased and exhibited the activation energy of 0.28 eV.

We present comparative analysis of microscopic mechanisms relevant to plastic deformation of the face-centered cubic (FCC) metals Al, Cu, and Ni, through determination of the temperature-dependent free energies of intrinsic and unstable stacking faults along 1 (1) over bar 0] and 1 (2) over bar 1] on the (1 1 1) plane using first-principles density-functional-theory-based calculations. We show that vibrational contribution results in significant decrease in the free energy of barriers and intrinsic stacking faults (ISFs) of Al, Cu, and Ni with temperature, confirming an important role of thermal fluctuations in the stability of stacking faults (SFs) and deformation at elevated temperatures. In contrast to Al and Ni, the vibrational spectrum of the unstable stacking fault (USF1 (2) over bar 1]) in Cu reveals structural instabilities, indicating that the energy barrier (gamma(usf)) along the (1 1 1)1 (2) over bar 1] slip system in Cu, determined by typical first-principles calculations, is an overestimate, and its commonly used interpretation as the energy release rate needed for dislocation nucleation, as proposed by Rice (1992 J. Mech. Phys. Solids 40 239), should be taken with caution.

The problem of finding an optimal vertex cover in a graph is a classic NP-complete problem, and is a special case of the hitting set question. On the other hand, the hitting set problem, when asked in the context of induced geometric objects, often turns out to be exactly the vertex cover problem on restricted classes of graphs. In this work we explore a particular instance of such a phenomenon. We consider the problem of hitting all axis-parallel slabs induced by a point set P, and show that it is equivalent to the problem of finding a vertex cover on a graph whose edge set is the union of two Hamiltonian Paths. We show the latter problem to be NP-complete, and also give an algorithm to find a vertex cover of size at most k, on graphs of maximum degree four, whose running time is 1.2637(k) n(O(1)).

Phase equilibria of the system Ca-Ta-O is established by equilibrating eleven samples at 1200 K for prolonged periods and phase identification in quenched samples by optical and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Four ternary oxides are identified: CaTa4O11, CaTa2O6, Ca2Ta2O7 and Ca4Ta2O9. Isothermal section of the phase diagram is composed using the results. Thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides are measured in the temperature range from 975 to 1275 K employing solid-state galvanic cells incorporating single crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The cells essentially measure the chemical potentials of CaO in two-phase fields (Ta2O5 + CaTa4O11), (CaTa4O11 + CaTa2O6), (CaTa2O6 + Ca2Ta2O7), and (Ca2Ta2O7 + Ca4Ta2O9) of the pseudo-binary system CaO-Ta2O5. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of the four ternary oxides from their component binary oxides Ta2O5 and CaO are given by: Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (CaTa4O11) (+/- 482)/J mol(-1) = -58644+21.497 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (CaTa2O6) (+/- 618)/J mol(-1) = -55122+21.893 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (Ca2Ta2O7) (+/- 729)/J mol(-1) = -82562+31.843 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (Ca4Ta2O9) (+/- 955)/J mol(-1) = -126598+48.859 (T/K) The Gibbs energy of formation of the four ternary compounds obtained in this study differs significantly from that reported in the literature. The thermodynamic data and phase diagram are used for understanding the mechanism and kinetics of calciothermic and electrochemical reduction of Ta2O5 to metal. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. InGaN epitaxial films were grown on GaN template by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The composition of indium incorporation in single phase InGaN film was found to be 23%. The band gap energy of single phase InGaN was found to be similar to 2.48 eV: The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of InGaN/GaN heterojunction was found to be rectifying behavior which shows the presence of Schottky barrier at the interface. Log-log plot of the I-V characteristics under forward bias indicates the current conduction mechanism is dominated by space charge limited current mechanism at higher applied voltage, which is usually caused due to the presence of trapping centers. The room temperature barrier height and the ideality factor of the Schottky junction were found to 0.76 eV and 4.9 respectively. The non-ideality of the Schottky junction may be due to the presence of high pit density and dislocation density in InGaN film. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A combination of measurements using photoelectron spectroscopy and calculations using density functional theory (DFT) was applied to compare the detailed electronic structure of the organolead halide perovskites CH3NH3PbI3 and CH3NH3PbBr3. These perovskite materials are used to absorb light in mesoscopic and planar heterojunction solar cells. The Pb 4f core level is investigated to get insight into the chemistry of the two materials. Valence level measurments are also included showing a shift of the valence band edges where there is a higher binding energy of the edge for the CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite. These changes are supported by the theoretical calculations which indicate that the differences in electronic structure are mainly caused by the nature of the halide ion rather than structural differences. The combination of photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and electronic structure calculations is essential to disentangle how the valence band edge in organolead halide perovskites is governed by the intrinsic difference in energy levels of the halide ions from the influence of chemical bonding.
