A bacterium Bacillus polymyxa was found to be capable of selective removal of calcium and iron from bauxite. The bioleached residue was found to be enriched in its alumina content with insignificant amounts of iron and calcium as impurities. The developed bio- process was found to be capable of producing a bauxite product which meets the specifica- tions as a raw material for the manufacture of alumina based ceramics and refractories. The role of bacterial cells and metabolic products in the selective dissolution of calcium (present as calcite) and iron (present as hematite and goethite) from bauxite was assessed and possi- ble mechanisms illustrated. The effect of different parameters such as sucrose concentra- tion, pH, pulp density and time on selective biodissolution was studied. It was observed that periodic decantation and replenishment of the leach medium was beneficial in improving the dissolution kinetics. Calcium removal involves chelation with bacterial exopolysaccha- tides and acidolysis by organic acid generation. Hematite could be solubilized through a reductive dissolution mechanism.

This paper proposes a method of short term load forecasting with limited data, applicable even at 11 kV substation levels where total power demand is relatively low and somewhat random and weather data are usually not available as in most developing countries. Kalman filtering technique has been modified and used to forecast daily and hourly load. Planning generation and interstate energy exchange schedule at load dispatch centre and decentralized Demand Side Management at substation level are intended to be carried out with the help of this short term load forecasting technique especially to achieve peak power control without enforcing load-shedding.

The esterification of stearic acid with p-cresol using modified Indian bentonite clay catalysts has been reported. The reaction was studied over exchanged clays, acid activated clays, exchanged acid activated clays, aluminium pillared clay, aluminium pillared acid activated clay, molecular sieve Al-MCM-41, zeolite H beta, ZrO2, S-ZrO2, p-TSA, montmorillonite K10, and montmorillonite KSF in o-xylene for 6 h. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction and surface area measurements. The acidity was determined by n-butylamine back-titration method and DRIFTS after pyridine adsorption. Acid activated Indian bentonite (AAIB) was found to be a better catalyst compared to other catalysts in the esterification of stearic acid with p-cresol.

Pyrochlore phase free [Pb0.94Sr0.06] [(Mn1/3Sb2/3)(0.05)(Zr0.53Ti0.47)(0.95)] O-3 ceramics has been synthesized with pure Perovskite phase by semi-wet route using the columbite precursor method. The field dependences of the dielectric response and the conductivity have been measured in a frequency range from 50 Hz to 1 MHz and in a temperature range from 303 K to 773 K. An analysis of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric permittivity with frequency has been performed, assuming a distribution of relaxation times. The scaling behavior of the dielectric loss spectra suggests that the distribution of the relaxation times is temperature independent. The SEM photographs of the sintered specimens present the homogenous structures and well-grown grains with a sharp grain boundary. The material exhibits tetragonal structure. When measured at frequency (100 Hz), the polarization shows a strong field dependence. Different piezoelectric figures of merit (k(p), d(33) and Q(m)) of the material have also been measured obtaining their values as 0.53, 271 pC/N and 1115, respectively, which are even higher than those of pure PZT with morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition. Thus the present ceramics have the optimal overall performance and are promising candidates for the various high power piezoelectric applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Impairment of Akt phosphorylation, a critical survival signal, has been implicated in the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's disease. However, the mechanism underlying pAkt loss is unclear. In the current study, we demonstrate pAkt loss in ventral midbrain of mice treated with dopaminergic neurotoxin, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), when compared to ventral midbrain of control mice treated with vehicle alone. Thiol residues of the critical cysteines in Akt are oxidized to a greater degree in mice treated with MPTP, which is reflected as a 40% loss of reduced Akt. Association of oxidatively modified Akt with the phosphatase PP2A, which can lead to enhanced dephosphorylation of pAkt, was significantly stronger after MPTP treatment. Maintaining the protein thiol homeostasis by thiol antioxidants prevented loss of reduced Akt, decreased association with PP2A, and maintained pAkt levels. Overexpression of glutaredoxin, a protein disulfide oxidoreductase, in human primary neurons helped sustain reduced state of Akt and abolished MPP+-mediated pAkt loss. We demonstrate for the first time the selective loss of Akt activity, in vivo, due to oxidative modification of Akt and provide mechanistic insight into oxidative stress-induced down-regulation of cell survival pathway in mouse midbrain following exposure to MPTP.-Durgadoss, L., Nidadavolu, P., Khader Valli, R., Saeed, U., Mishra, M., Seth, P., Ravindranath, R. Phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PLC) is involved in Ca2+ mediated signalling events that lead to altered cellular status. Using various sequence-analysis methods, we identified two conserved motifs in known PLC sequences. The identified motifs are located in the C2 domain of plant PLCs and are not found in any other protein. These motifs are specifically found in the Ca2+ binding loops and form adjoining beta strands. Further, we identified certain conserved residues that are highly distinct from corresponding residues of animal PLCs. The motifs reported here could be used to annotate plant-specific phospholipase C sequences. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the C2 domain alone is capable of targeting PLC to the membrane in response to a Ca2+ signal. We also showed that the binding event results from a change in the hydrophobicity of the C2 domain upon Ca2+ binding. Bioinformatic analyses revealed that all PLCs from Arabidopsis and rice lack a transmembrane domain, myristoylation and GPI-anchor protein modifications. Our bioinformatic study indicates that plant PLCs are located in the cytoplasm, the nucleus and the mitochondria. Our results suggest that there are no distinct isoforms of plant PLCs, as have been proposed to exist in the soluble and membrane associated fractions. The same isoform could potentially be present in both subcellular fractions, depending on the calcium level of the cytosol. Overall, these data suggest that the C2 domain of PLC plays a vital role in calcium signalling.

CaxCu3Ti4O12 (x=0.90, 0.97, 1.0, 1.1 and 1.15) polycrystalline powders with variation in calcium content were prepared via the oxalate precursor route. The structural, morphological and dielectric properties of the ceramics fabricated using these powders were studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope along with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and impedance analyzer. The X-ray diffraction patterns obtained for the x = 0.97, 1.0 and 1.1 powdered ceramics could be indexed to a body-centered cubic perovskite related structure associated with the space group Im3. The ESR studies confirmed the absence of oxygen vacancies in the ceramics that were prepared using the oxalate precursor route. The dielectric properties of these suggest that the calcium deficient sample (x = 0.97) has a reduced dielectric loss while retaining the high dielectric constant which is of significant industrial relevance. Boron addition to conventional titanium alloys below the eutectic limit refines the cast microstructure and improves mechanical properties. The present work explores the influence of hypoeutectic boron addition on the microstructure and texture evolution in Ti-6Al-4V alloy under beta extrusion. The beta extruded microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V is characterized by shear bands parallel to the extrusion direction. In contrast, the extruded Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy shows a regular beta worked microstructure consisting of fine prior beta grains and acicular alpha-lamellae with no signs of the microstructural instability. Crystallographic texture after extrusion was almost identical for the two alloys indicating the similarity in their transformation behavior, which is attributed to complete dynamic recrystallization during beta processing. Microstructural features as well as crystallographic texture indicate dominant grain boundary related deformation processes for the boron modified alloy that leads to homogeneous deformation without instability formation. The absence of shear bands has significant technological importance as far as the secondary processing of boron added alloys in (alpha + beta)-phase field are concerned. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents a modified cellulose acetate membrane prepared using a dry casting technique that can be used to perform lysis of erythrocytes and isolation of hemoglobin. Isolation of hemoglobin is thus achieved without the use of lysis buffers. Cellulose acetate (CA) membranes are embedded with ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3), which act as lysing agents. The presence of embedded salts is confirmed using EDS analysis. The pores in the CA membrane act as filters. The average pore size in these membranes is designed to be 1.5 mu M, as characterized by SEM analysis, so that they allow hemoglobin to pass through and block all other cells and unlysed erythrocytes present in blood. When a drop of blood is added to the membrane, the NH4Cl and KHCO3 embedded in the membrane dissolve in plasma and lyse the erythrocytes. The filtered hemoglobin is characterized using UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The results indicate extraction of higher concentration of hemoglobin compared with conventional methods.

In this paper, the well-known Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) is modified to solve the fracture laminated multi-directional problems. The results are compared with the existing analytical/exact or experimental method. The already known existing ADM is modified to improve the accuracy and convergence. Thus, the modified method is named as Modified Adomian Decomposition Method (MADM). The results fromMADM are found to converge very quickly, simple to apply for fracture(singularity) problems and are more accurate compared to experimental and analytical methods. MADM is quite efficient and is practically well-suited for use in these problems. Several examples are given to check the reliability of the present method. In the present paper, the principle of the decomposition method is described, and its advantages form the analyses of fracture of laminated uni-directional composites.

Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CPKs) constitute a unique family of kinases involved in many physiological responses in plants. Biochemical and kinetic properties of a recombinant Swainsona canescens calcium-dependent protein kinase (ScCPK1) were examined in this study. The optimum pH and temperature for activity were pH 7.5 and 37 degrees C, respectively. Substrate phosphorylation activity of ScCPK1 was calmodulin (CaM) independent. Yet CaM antagonists, W7 N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalene sulphonamide] and calmidazolium inhibited the activity with IC50 values of 750 nM and 350 pM, respectively. Both serine and threonine residues were found to be phosphorylated in auto-phosphorylated ScCPK1 and in histone III-S phosphorylated by ScCPK1. The Ca2+] for half maximal activity (K-0.5) was found to be 0.4 mu M for ScCPK1 with histone III-S as substrate. Kinetic analysis showed that Km of ScCPK1 for histone III-S was 4.8 mu M. These data suggest that ScCPK1 is a functional Ser/Thr kinase, regulated by calcium, and may have a role in Ca2+-mediated signaling in S. canescens. (C) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Organo-clay was prepared by incorporating different amounts (in terms of CEC, ranging from 134-840 mg of quaternary ammonium cation (QACs) such as hexadecytrimethylammonium bromide (C19H42N]Br) into the montmorillonite clay. Prepared organo-clays are characterized by CHN analyser and XRD to measure the amount of elemental content and interlayer spacing of surfactant modified clay. The batch experiments of sorption of permanganate from aqueous media by organo-clays was studied at different acidic strengths (pH 1-7). The experimental results show that the rate and amount of adsorption of permanganate was higher at lower pH compared to raw montmorillonite. Laboratory fixed bed experiments were conducted to evaluate the breakthrough time and nature of breakthrough curves. The shape of the breakthrough curves shows that the initial cationic surfactant loadings at 1.0 CEC of the clay is enough to enter the permanganate ions in to the interlamellar region of the surfactant modified smectile clays. These fixed bed studies were also applied to quantify the effect of bed-depth and breakthrough time during the uptake of permanganate. Calculation of thermodynamic parameters shows that the sorption of permanganate is spontaneous and follows the first order kinetics.

Graphene's nano-dimensional nature and excellent electron transfer properties underlie its electrocatalytic behavior towards certain substances. In this light, we have used graphene in the electrochemical detection of bisphenol A. Graphene sheets were produced via soft chemistry route involving graphite oxidation and chemical reduction. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the as-synthesized graphene. Graphene exhibited amorphous structure in comparison with pristine graphite from XRD spectra. FTIR showed that graphene exhibits OH and COOH groups due to incomplete reduction. Raman spectroscopy revealed that multi-layered graphene was produced due to low intensity of the 2D-peak. Glassy carbon electrode was modified with graphene by a simple drop and dry method. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study the electrochemical properties of the prepared graphene-modified glassy carbon electrode using potassium ferricyanide as a redox probe. The prepared graphene- modified glassy carbon electrode exhibited more facile electron kinetics and enhanced current of about 75% when compared to the unmodified glassy carbon electrode. The modified electrode was used for the detection of bisphenol A. Under the optimum conditions, the oxidation peak current of bisphenol A varied linearly with concentration over a wide range of 5 x 10(-8) mol L-1 to 1 x 10(-6) mol L-1 and the detection limit of this method was as low as 4.689 x 10(-8) M. This method was also employed to determine bisphenol A in a real sample

Vicsek et al. proposed a biologically inspired model of self-propelled particles, which is now commonly referred to as the Vicsek model. Recently, attention has been directed at modifying the Vicsek model so as to improve convergence properties. In this paper, we propose two modification of the Vicsek model which leads to significant improvements in convergence times. The modifications involve an additional term in the heading update rule which depends only on the current or the past states of the particle's neighbors. The variation in convergence properties as the parameters of these modified versions are changed are closely investigated. It is found that in both cases, there exists an optimal value of the parameter which reduces convergence times significantly and the system undergoes a phase transition as the value of the parameter is increased beyond this optimal value. Accurate estimation of mass transport parameters is necessary for overall design and evaluation processes of the waste disposal facilities. The mass transport parameters, such as effective diffusion coefficient, retardation factor and diffusion accessible porosity, are estimated from observed diffusion data by inverse analysis. Recently, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm has been used to develop inverse model for estimating these parameters that alleviated existing limitations in the inverse analysis. However, PSO solver yields different solutions in successive runs because of the stochastic nature of the algorithm and also because of the presence of multiple optimum solutions. Thus the estimated mean solution from independent runs is significantly different from the best solution. In this paper, two variants of the PSO algorithms are proposed to improve the performance of the inverse analysis. The proposed algorithms use perturbation equation for the gbest particle to gain information around gbest region on the search space and catfish particles in alternative iterations to improve exploration capabilities. Performance comparison of developed solvers on synthetic test data for two different diffusion problems reveals that one of the proposed solvers, CPPSO, significantly improves overall performance with improved best, worst and mean fitness values. The developed solver is further used to estimate transport parameters from 12 sets of experimentally observed diffusion data obtained from three diffusion problems and compared with published values from the literature. The proposed solver is quick, simple and robust on different diffusion problems. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
