Using the singular surface theory, an expression for the jump in vorticity across a shock wave of arbitrary shape propagating in a uniform, perfect fluid occupying the space-time of special relativity, has been derived. It has been shown that the jump in vorticity across a shock of given strength and curvature depends only on the velocity of the medium ahead of the shock.

Simple formalized rules are proposed for automatic phonetic transcription of Tamil words into Roman script. These rules are syntax-directed and require a one-symbol look-ahead facility and hence easily automated in a digital computer. Some suggestions are also put forth for the linearization of Tamil script for handling these by modern machinery.

Stationary crack tip fields in bulk metallic glasses under mixed mode (I and II) loading are studied through detailed finite element simulations assuming plane strain, small scale yielding conditions. The influence of internal friction or pressure sensitivity on the plastic zones. notch deformation, stress and plastic strain fields is examined for different mode mixities. Under mixed mode loading, the notch deforms into a shape such that one part of its surface sharpens while the other part blunts. Increase in mode If component of loading dramatically enhances the normalized plastic zone size, lowers the stresses but significantly elevates the plastic strain levels near the notch tip. Higher internal friction reduces the peak tangential stress but increases the plastic strain and stretching near the blunted part of the notch. The simulated shear bands are straight and extend over a long distance ahead of the notch tip under mode II dominant loading. The possible variations of fracture toughness with mode mixity corresponding to failure by brittle micro-cracking and ductile shear banding are predicted employing two simple fracture criteria. The salient results from finite element simulations are validated by comparison with those from mixed mode (I and II) fracture experiments on a Zr-based bulk metallic glass.

In this article, the problem of two Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) cooperatively searching an unknown region is addressed. The search region is discretized into hexagonal cells and each cell is assumed to possess an uncertainty value. The UAVs have to cooperatively search these cells taking limited endurance, sensor and communication range constraints into account. Due to limited endurance, the UAVs need to return to the base station for refuelling and also need to select a base station when multiple base stations are present. This article proposes a route planning algorithm that takes endurance time constraints into account and uses game theoretical strategies to reduce the uncertainty. The route planning algorithm selects only those cells that ensure the agent will return to any one of the available bases. A set of paths are formed using these cells which the game theoretical strategies use to select a path that yields maximum uncertainty reduction. We explore non-cooperative Nash, cooperative and security strategies from game theory to enhance the search effectiveness. Monte-Carlo simulations are carried out which show the superiority of the game theoretical strategies over greedy strategy for different look ahead step length paths. Within the game theoretical strategies, non-cooperative Nash and cooperative strategy perform similarly in an ideal case, but Nash strategy performs better than the cooperative strategy when the perceived information is different. We also propose a heuristic based on partitioning of the search space into sectors to reduce computational overhead without performance degradation.

Transport of 1-14C-IAA in successive stem segments of Cuscuta was strictly basipetal in growing and non growing regions of the vine with a flux velocity of 10-12 mm/h (intercept method). This transport showed a distinct peaked profile, increasing from a low value at 10 mm from the apex to a maximum between 50 and 90 mm before declining to a low value again around 160 mm at which elongation growth ceased. The IAA transport profile paralleled the in vivo growth rate profile, though the latter peaked ahead of transport. A better correlation was observed between the profile of growth responsiveness of the vine to exogenous IAA application and the profile of IAA transport. Growth responsiveness was determined as the differential in growth rate of stem segments in vitro in the absence and presence of growth optimal concentration of IAA (10 μm). Retention of exogenous IAA in the stem was maximal where transport decreased, and this coincided with the region of maximal conjugation of applied 1-14C-IAA to aspartic acid to form indoleacetylaspartate (IAAsp). In addition to aspartate, IAA was conjugated to a small extent to an unidentified compound. IAA destruction by decarboxylation was greatest where transport was low, particularly in the nongrowing region, where lignification occurred (i.e., beyond 180 mm). At concentrations up to 20 μM, a pulse of 1-14C-IAA chased by "cold" IAA moved as a peak (with a peak displacement velocity of 12-18 mm/h) in the "growth" region of the vine, but became diffusionlike where growth either fell off steeply or ceased. At a higher (50 μM) IAA concentration, though uptake was not saturated, transport in the growth region became diffusionlike, indicating saturation of the system. Reduced IAA flux in the region where growth responsiveness to IAA declined coincided with the region of increased IAA conjugation. However, it cannot be concluded whether increased IAA conjugation was the cause or effect of decreased IAA flux. Application of benzyladenine to the vines in vivo, a treatment that elicited haustoria formation by 72 h, resulted in the inhibition of both IAA transport and elongation growth rate in the subapical region. In vitro treatment of vine segments with BA similarly increased IAA retention and decreased IAA transport. IAA loss was suppressed, and conjugation to IAAsp was enhanced. © 1989 Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

In this work a single edge notched plate (SEN(T)) subjected to a tensile stress pulse is analysed, using a 2D plane strain dynamic finite element procedure. The interaction of the notch with a pre-nucleated hole ahead of it is examined. The background material is modelled by the Gurson constitutive law and ductile failure by microvoid coalescence in the ligament connecting the notch and the hole is simulated. Both rate independent and rate dependent material behaviour is considered. The notch tip region is subjected to a range of loading rates j by varying the peak value and the rise time of the applied stress pulse. The results obtained from these simulations are compared with a three point bend (TPB) specimen subjected to impact loading analysed in an earlier work [3] The variation of J at fracture initiation, J(c), with average loading rate j is obtained from the finite element simulations. It is found that the functional relationship between J(c) and j is fairly independent of the specimen geometry and is only dependent on material behaviour.

Effect of constraint (stress triaxiality) on void growth near a notch tip in a FCC single crystal is investigated. Finite element simulations within the modified boundary layer framework are conducted using crystal plasticity constitutive equations and neglecting elastic anisotropy. Displacement boundary conditions based on model, elastic, two term K-T field are applied on the outer boundary of a large circular domain. A pre-nucleated void is considered ahead of a stationary notch tip. The interaction between the notch tip and the void is studied under different constraints (T-stress levels) and crystal orientations. It is found that negative T-stress retards the mechanisms of ductile fracture. However, the extent of retardation depends on the crystal orientation. Further, it is found that there exists a particular orientation which delays the ductile fracture processes and hence can potentially improve ductility. This optimal orientation depends on the constraint level. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V.

We consider a wireless sensor network whose main function is to detect certain infrequent alarm events, and to forward alarm packets to a base station, using geographical forwarding. The nodes know their locations, and they sleep-wake cycle, waking up periodically but not synchronously. In this situation, when a node has a packet to forward to the sink, there is a trade-off between how long this node waits for a suitable neighbor to wake up and the progress the packet makes towards the sink once it is forwarded to this neighbor. Hence, in choosing a relay node, we consider the problem of minimizing average delay subject to a constraint on the average progress. By constraint relaxation, we formulate this next hop relay selection problem as a Markov decision process (MDP). The exact optimal solution (BF (Best Forward)) can be found, but is computationally intensive. Next, we consider a mathematically simplified model for which the optimal policy (SF (Simplified Forward)) turns out to be a simple one-step-look-ahead rule. Simulations show that SF is very close in performance to BF, even for reasonably small node density. We then study the end-to-end performance of SF in comparison with two extremal policies: Max Forward (MF) and First Forward (FF), and an end-to-end delay minimising policy proposed by Kim et al. 1]. We find that, with appropriate choice of one hop average progress constraint, SF can be tuned to provide a favorable trade-off between end-to-end packet delay and the number of hops in the forwarding path.

In this paper, an overview of some recent computational studies by the authors on ductile crack initiation under mode I, dynamic loading is presented. In these studies, a large deformation finite element procedure is employed along with the viscoplastic version of the Gurson constitutive model that accounts for the micro-mechanical processes of void nucleation, growth and coalescence. A three-point bend fracture specimen subjected to impact, and a single edge notched specimen loaded by a tensile stress pulse are analysed. Several loading rates are simulated by varying the impact speed or the rise time and magnitude of the stress pulse. A simple model involving a semi-circular notch with a pre-nucleated circular hole situated ahead of it is considered. The growth of the hole and its interaction with the notch tip, which leads to plastic strain and porosity localization in the ligament connecting them, is simulated. The role of strain-rate dependence on ductile crack initiation at high loading rates, and the specimen geometry effect on the variation of dynamic fracture toughness with loading rate are Investigated.

This paper presents a new approach by making use of a hybrid method of using the displacement discontinuity element method and direct boundary element method to model concrete cracking by incorporating fictitious crack model. Fracture mechanics approach is followed using the Hillerborg's fictitious crack model. A boundary element based substructure method and a hybrid technique of using displacement discontinuity element method and direct boundary element method are compared in this paper. In order to represent the process zone ahead of the crack, closing forces are assumed to act in such a way that they obey a linear normal stress-crack opening displacement law. Plain concrete beams with and without initial crack under three-point loading were analyzed by both the methods. The numerical results obtained were shown to agree well with the results from existing finite element method. The model is capable of reproducing the whole range of load-deflection response including strain-softening and snap-back behavior as illustrated in the numerical examples. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The questions that one should answer in engineering computations - deterministic, probabilistic/randomized, as well as heuristic - are (i) how good the computed results/outputs are and (ii) how much the cost in terms of amount of computation and the amount of storage utilized in getting the outputs is. The absolutely errorfree quantities as well as the completely errorless computations done in a natural process can never be captured by any means that we have at our disposal. While the computations including the input real quantities in nature/natural processes are exact, all the computations that we do using a digital computer or are carried out in an embedded form are never exact. The input data for such computations are also never exact because any measuring instrument has inherent error of a fixed order associated with it and this error, as a matter of hypothesis and not as a matter of assumption, is not less than 0.005 per cent. Here by error we imply relative error bounds. The fact that exact error is never known under any circumstances and any context implies that the term error is nothing but error-bounds. Further, in engineering computations, it is the relative error or, equivalently, the relative error-bounds (and not the absolute error) which is supremely important in providing us the information regarding the quality of the results/outputs. Another important fact is that inconsistency and/or near-consistency in nature, i.e., in problems created from nature is completely nonexistent while in our modelling of the natural problems we may introduce inconsistency or near-inconsistency due to human error or due to inherent non-removable error associated with any measuring device or due to assumptions introduced to make the problem solvable or more easily solvable in practice. Thus if we discover any inconsistency or possibly any near-inconsistency in a mathematical model, it is certainly due to any or all of the three foregoing factors. We do, however, go ahead to solve such inconsistent/near-consistent problems and do get results that could be useful in real-world situations. The talk considers several deterministic, probabilistic, and heuristic algorithms in numerical optimisation, other numerical and statistical computations, and in PAC (probably approximately correct) learning models. It highlights the quality of the results/outputs through specifying relative error-bounds along with the associated confidence level, and the cost, viz., amount of computations and that of storage through complexity. It points out the limitation in error-free computations (wherever possible, i.e., where the number of arithmetic operations is finite and is known a priori) as well as in the usage of interval arithmetic. Further, the interdependence among the error, the confidence, and the cost is discussed.

Thermodynamic properties of Mn3O4, Mn2O3 and MnO2 are reassessed based on new measurements and selected data from the literature. Data for these oxides are available in most thermodynamics compilations based on older calorimetric measurements on heat capacity and enthalpy of formation, and high-temperature decomposition studies. The older heat capacity measurements did not extend below 50 K. Recent measurements have extended the low temperature limit to 5 K. A reassessment of thermodynamic data was therefore undertaken, supplemented by new measurements on high temperature heat capacity of Mn3O4 and oxygen chemical potential for the oxidation of MnO1-x, Mn3O4, and Mn2O3 to their respective higher oxides using an advanced version of solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating a buffer electrode. Because of the high accuracy now achievable with solid-state electrochemical cells, phase-equilibrium calorimetry involving the ``third-law'' analysis has emerged as a competing tool to solution and combustion calorimetry for determining the standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K. The refined thermodynamic data for the oxides are presented in tabular form at regular intervals of temperature.

In this work, the effects of loading rate, material rate sensitivity and constraint level on quasi-static crack tip fields in a FCC single crystal are studied. Finite element simulations are performed within a mode I, plane strain modified boundary layer framework by prescribing the two term (K-T) elastic crack tip field as remote boundary conditions. The material is assumed to obey a rate-dependent crystal plasticity theory. The orientation of the single crystal is chosen so that the crack surface coincides with the crystallographic (010) plane and the crack front lies along 101] direction. Solutions corresponding to different stress intensity rates K., T-stress values and strain rate exponents m are obtained. The results show that the stress levels ahead of the crack tip increase with K. which is accompanied by gradual shrinking of the plastic zone size. However, the nature of the shear band patterns around the crack tip is not affected by the loading rate. Further, it is found that while positive T-stress enhances the opening and hydrostatic stress levels ahead of crack tip, they are considerably reduced with imposition of negative T-stress. Also, negative T-stress promotes formation of shear bands in the forward sector ahead of the crack tip and suppresses them behind the tip.

This paper presents the details of nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) of three point bending specimens made up of high strength concrete (HSC, HSC1) and ultra high strength concrete (UHSC). Brief details about characterization and experimentation of HSC, HSC1 and UHSC have been provided. Cracking strength criterion has been used for simulation of crack propagation by conducting nonlinear FEA. The description about FEA using crack strength criterion has been outlined. Bi-linear tension softening relation has been used for modeling the cohesive stresses ahead of the crack tip. Numerical studies have been carried out on fracture analysis of three point bending specimens. It is observed from the studies that the computed values from FEA are in very good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. The computed values of stress vs crack width will be useful for evaluation of fracture energy, crack tip opening displacement and fracture toughness. Further, these values can also be used for crack growth study, remaining life assessment and residual strength evaluation of concrete structural components.
