Gold-silica hybrids are appealing in different fields of applications like catalysis, sensorics, drug delivery, and biotechnology. In most cases, the morphology and distribution of the heterounits play significant roles in their functional behavior. Methods of synthesizing these hybrids, with variable ordering of the heterounits, are replete; however, a complete characterization in three dimensions could not be achieved yet. A simple route to the synthesis of Au-decorated SiO2 spheres is demonstrated and a study on the 3D ordering of the heterounits by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) tomography is presentedat the final stage, intermediate stages of formation, and after heating the hybrid. The final hybrid evolves from a soft self-assembled structure of Au nanoparticles. The hybrid shows good thermal stability up to 400 degrees C, beyond which the Au particles start migrating inside the SiO2 matrix. This study provides an insight in the formation mechanism and thermal stability of the structures which are crucial factors for designing and applying such hybrids in fields of catalysis and biotechnology. As the method is general, it can be applied to make similar hybrids based on SiO2 by tuning the reaction chemistry as needed.

Lipase and surfactant together form a potent pair in various biotransformation, industrial application and biotechnological studies. The present investigation deals with changes in the activity, stability and structure of lipase from Rhizopus oryzae NRRL 3562 in presence of long chain ionic liquid-type imidazolium surfactant. Both the activity and stability were found to be enhanced in presence of the surfactant at low concentration (1-125 mu M) followed by inhibition at high concentration. The activity increased by 80% and thermal deactivation temperature raised by 2.5 degrees C. Investigations by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and circular dichroism revealed structural changes leading to rise in beta-sheet content and lowering of a-helix at low surfactant concentrations. Deactivation at high concentration correlated with greater structural changes depicted by spectroscopic studies. Isothermal titration calorimetric studies showed the binding to be spontaneous in nature involving non-covalent interactions. High negative value of entropy signifies exposure of hydrophobic domains and increase in structural rigidity, which correlates with active site being more accessible and rigid in presence of the surfactant. Application of these surfactants hold greater potential in the field of lipase based biotransformations, enzyme structural modifications and studies. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hollow nanomaterials have attracted a lot of interest by virtue of their wide range of applications that arise primarily due to their unique architecture. A common strategy to synthesize hollow nanomaterials is by nucleation of the shell material over a preformed core and subsequent dissolution of the core in the second step. Herein an ultrafast, microwave route has been demonstrated, to synthesize PdO nanotubes in a single step using ZnO as a sacrificial template. The mechanism of the nanotube formation has been investigated in detail using control experiments. By tuning the starting ratio of PdCl2 : ZnO, hollow to hybrid PdO nanostructures could be obtained using the same method. Conversion of the PdO to Pd nanotubes has been shown by simple NaBH4 treatment. The thermal stability of the PdO nanotubes has been studied. The insights presented here are general and applicable for the synthesis of hybrids/hollow structures in other systems as well.

The photocatalytic and thermal degradations of poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(butyl acrylate), and their copolymers of different compositions were studied. The photocatalytic degradation was investigated in o-dichlorobenzene in the presence of two different catalysts, namely, Degussa P-25 and combustion synthesized nanotitania (CSN-TiO2). The samples were analyzed by using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) to obtain the molecular weight distributions (MWDs) as a function of reaction time. Experimental data indicated that the photodegradation of these polymers occurs by both random and chain end scission. A continuous distribution kinetic model was used to determine the degradation rate coefficients by fitting the experimental data with the model. Both the random and specific rate coefficients of the copolymers decreased with increasing percentage of butyl acrylate (BA). Thermal degradation of the copolymers was investigated by thermo-gravimetry. The normalized weight loss profiles for the copolymers showed that the thermal stability of the copolymers increased with mole percentage of BA in the copolymer (PMMABA). The Czawa method was used to determine the activation energies at different conversions. At low acrylate content in the copolymer, the activation energy depends on conversion, indicating multiple degradation mechanisms. At high acrylate content in the copolymer, the activation energy is independent of conversion, indicating degradation by a one-step mechanism.

Metl oxalate hydrazinates MC2O4·2 N2H4 where M=Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd have been prepared and characterised by chemical analysis and infrared spectra. Thermal reactivity and decomposition of these oxalato complexes have been studied using thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. Hydrazinates of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu oxalates exhibit autocatalytic decomposition behaviour whereas the others do not. This phenomenon can be attributed to the presence of a bridged hydrazine as well as the thermal stability of the anhydrous metal oxalates.

Synthesis, spectroscopic and thermal characterization of two new classes of polysulfide polymers: poly[1(phenoxymethyl) ethylene polysulfide] (PPMEP), and poly [1-(phenoxy) ethylene polysulfide] (PPEP) is presented. The direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry (DP-MS) technique, used to study the thermal degradation behavior of these polysulfide polymers, indicated that the polymers underwent degradation through the weak-links scission. The thermal stability of the polysulfide polymers decreased as the ``rank'' (number of sulfur atoms in the polysulfide linkage; n=1, 2, 4) increased. The main-chain flexibility of these polysulfide polymers in terms of their C-13 NMR spinlattice relaxation time (T-1) measurements on the backbone methine (-CH-) and methylene (-CH2-) carbons are reported here for the first time. A comparative study of the solution chain dynamics indicated that it increased as ``rank'' of the polysulfide linkages decreased as well as by introducing side chain spacers such as, ether (-O-) or methyleneoxy (-CH2O-) groups.

Two coordination polymers [Ni(ipt)(dap)(2)](n) (1) and [Cu(ipt)(dap)H2O](n) center dot nH(2)O (2) with an overall one-dimensional arrangement and having isophthalate (ipt) as bridging moieties and chelating 1,3-diaminopropane (dap) as structure modulating units have been prepared and characterized by crystallographic, spectroscopic and thermo-analytical studies. Both have an overall one-dimensional zig-zag nature but with a distorted octahedral NiN4O2 chromophore for 1 and a distorted square pyramidal CuN2O3 chromophore for 2. Even though the ipt units are acting as bridging units through mono-dentatively coordinating carboxylate functions in both polymers, compound 1 has the carboxylate oxygen linkages at the trans positions, while in 2 the oxygen linkages occur at the cis positions leading to a different type of zig-zag arrangement. Relevant spectral and bonding parameters also could be evaluated for the compounds using UV-Vis and EPR spectra. Thermal stability and possible structural modifications on thermal treatment of the compounds were also investigated and the relevant thermodynamic and kinetic parameters evaluated from the thermal data. This study views each protein structure as a network of noncovalent connections between amino acid side chains. Each amino acid in a protein structure is a node, and the strength of the noncovalent interactions between two amino acids is evaluated for edge determination. The protein structure graphs (PSGs) for 232 proteins have been constructed as a function of the cutoff of the amino acid interaction strength at a few carefully chosen values. Analysis of such PSGs constructed on the basis of edge weights has shown the following: 1), The PSGs exhibit a complex topological network behavior, which is dependent on the interaction cutoff chosen for PSG construction. 2), A transition is observed at a critical interaction cutoff, in all the proteins, as monitored by the size of the largest cluster (giant component) in the graph. Amazingly, this transition occurs within a narrow range of interaction cutoff for all the proteins, irrespective of the size or the fold topology. And 3), the amino acid preferences to be highly connected (hub frequency) have been evaluated as a function of the interaction cutoff. We observe that the aromatic residues along with arginine, histidine, and methionine act as strong hubs at high interaction cutoffs, whereas the hydrophobic leucine and isoleucine residues get added to these hubs at low interaction cutoffs, forming weak hubs. The hubs identified are found to play a role in bringing together different secondary structural elements in the tertiary structure of the proteins. They are also found to contribute to the additional stability of the thermophilic proteins when compared to their mesophilic counterparts and hence could be crucial for the folding and stability of the unique three-dimensional structure of proteins. Based on these results, we also predict a few residues in the thermophilic and mesophilic proteins that can be mutated to alter their thermal stability.

Lignin was graft copolymerized with methyl methacrylate using manganic pyrophosphate as initiator. This modified lignin was then blended (up to 50 wt%) with low density polyethylene (LDPE) using a small quantity of poly[ethylene-co-(glycidyl methacrylate)] (PEGMA) compatibilizer. The mechanical properties of the blend were substantially improved by using modified lignin in contrast to untreated lignin. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed loss of crystallinity of the LDPE phase owing to the interaction between the blend components. Thermogravimetric analysis showed higher thermal stability of modified lignin in the domain of blend processing. This suggested that there is scope for useful utilization of lignin, which could also lead to the development of eco-friendly products. (c) 2005 Society of Chemical Industry.

The thermal degradation behavior of banana fiber and polypropylene/banana fiber composites has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Banana fiber was found to be decomposing in two stages, first one around 320 degrees C and the second one around 450 degrees C. For chemically treated banana fiber, the decomposition process has been at a higher temperature, indicating thermal stability for the treated fiber. Activation energies for thermal degradation were estimated using Coats and Redfern method. Calorific value of the banana fiber was measured using a constant volume isothermal bomb calorimeter. rystallization studies exhibited an increase in the crystallization temperature and crystallinity of polypropylene upon the addition of banana fiber. Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetric (ADSC) and electrical switching studies have been undertaken on Ge20Se80-xBix glasses (1 <= x <= 13), to understand the effect of topological thresholds on thermal properties and electrical switching behavior. It is found that the compositional dependence of glass transition temperature (Tg), crystallization temperature (T-c1) and thermal stability (AT) of Ge20Se80-xBix glasses show anomalies at a composition x= 5, the rigidity percolation/stiffness threshold of the system. Further, unusual variations are also observed in different thermal properties, such as T-g, T-c1, Delta T, Delta C-p and Delta H-NR, at the composition x= 10, which indicates the occurrence of chemical threshold in these glasses at this composition. Electrical switching studies indicate that Ge20Se8o_RBig glasses with 5 11 exhibit threshold switching behavior and those with x = 12 and 13 show memory switching. A sharp decrease has been noticed in the switching voltages with bismuth concentration, which is due to the more metallic nature of bismuth and the presence of Bi+ ions. Further, a saturation is seen in the decrease in V-T around x = 6, which is related to bismuth phase percolation at higher concentrations of Bi. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
On the evaluation of stability of rare earth oxides as face coats for investment casting of titanium
Resumo:
Attempts have been made to evaluate the thermal stability of rare earth oxide face coats against liquid titanium. Determination of microhardness profiles and concentration profiles of oxygen and metallic constituents of oxide in investment cast titanium rods has allowed grActation of relative stability of rare earth oxides. The relative stability of evaluated oxides in the order of increasing stability follows the sequence CeO2 — ZrO2 — Gd2O3 — didymium oxide — Sm2O3 —Nd2O3 — Y2O3. The grading does not follow the free energy data of the formation of these oxides. A better correlation with the experimental observations is obtained when the solubility of the metallic species in titanium is also taken into consideration.
