Chemical composition of rainwater changes from sea to inland under the influence of several major factors - topographic location of area, its distance from sea, annual rainfall. A model is developed here to quantify the variation in precipitation chemistry under the influence of inland distance and rainfall amount. Various sites in India categorized as 'urban', 'suburban' and 'rural' have been considered for model development. pH, HCO3, NO3 and Mg do not change much from coast to inland while, SO4 and Ca change is subjected to local emissions. Cl and Na originate solely from sea salinity and are the chemistry parameters in the model. Non-linear multiple regressions performed for the various categories revealed that both rainfall amount and precipitation chemistry obeyed a power law reduction with distance from sea. Cl and Na decrease rapidly for the first 100 km distance from sea, then decrease marginally for the next 100 km, and later stabilize. Regression parameters estimated for different cases were found to be consistent (R-2 similar to 0.8). Variation in one of the parameters accounted for urbanization. Model was validated using data points from the southern peninsular region of the country. Estimates are found to be within 99.9% confidence interval. Finally, this relationship between the three parameters - rainfall amount, coastline distance, and concentration (in terms of Cl and Na) was validated with experiments conducted in a small experimental watershed in the south-west India. Chemistry estimated using the model was in good correlation with observed values with a relative error of similar to 5%. Monthly variation in the chemistry is predicted from a downscaling model and then compared with the observed data. Hence, the model developed for rain chemistry is useful in estimating the concentrations at different spatio-temporal scales and is especially applicable for south-west region of India. The interaction of Cibacron blue F3GA with ribosome inactivating proteins, ricin, ricin A-chain and momordin has been investigated using difference absorption spectroscopy. Ricin was found to bind the dye with a 20- and 2-fold lower affinity than ricin A-chain and momordin, respectively. A time dependent increase in the amplitude of Cibacron blue difference spectrum in the presence of ricin was observed on addition of beta-mercaptoethanol. Analysis of the kinetic profile of this increase showed a biphasic phenomenon and the observed rates were found to be independent of the concentration of beta-mercaptoethanol. Kinetics of reduction of the intersubunit disulphide bond in ricin by beta-mercaptoethanol showed that reduction pet se is a second order reaction. Therefore, the observed changes in the difference spectra of Cibacron blue probably indicate a slow change in the conformation of ricin, triggered by reduction of the intersubunit disulphide bond.

Good quality single crystals of copper metagermanite, CuGeO3, are grown by flux technique. Growth is carried out at relatively low temperatures by using Bi2O3 along with CuO in an optimal flux ratio. Besides rendering the procedure simple, lower growth temperature reduces growth defect concentration. Single crystals of Cu1 - xCoxGeO3 and CuGe1 - yGayO3 are grown by the same method for different values of x and y to investigate the influence of in-chain and off-chain doping on spin-Peierls (SP) transition. Change in color, morphology and surface features as a result of doping are briefly discussed. Spin-Peierls transition of these crystals is studied by susceptibility measurements on a commercial SQUID magnetometer. Cationic substitution resulted in reduction of spin-Peierls transition temperature (T-SP) of CuGeO3. Substitution of magnetic impurity cobalt in-chain site caused more pronounced effects such as suppression of SP phase.

Amorphous carbon-sulfur (a-C:S) composite films were prepared by vapor phase pyrolysis technique. The structural changes in the a-C:S films were investigated by electron microscopy. A powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) study depicts the two-phase nature of a sulfur-incorporated a-C system. The optical bandgap energy shows a decreasing trend with an increase in the sulfur content and preparation temperature. This infers a sulfur incorporation and pyrolysis temperature induced reduction in structural disorder or increase in sp (2) or pi-sites. The presence of sulfur (S 2p) in the a-C:S sample is analyzed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sp (3)/sp (2) hybridization ratio is determined by using the XPS C 1s peak fitting, and the results confirm an increase in sp (2) hybrids with sulfur addition to a-C. The electrical resistivity variation in the films depends on both the sulfur concentration and the pyrolysis temperature.

Ce1-xSnxO2 (x = 0.1-0.5) solid solution and its Pd substituted analogue have been prepared by a single step solution combustion method using tin oxalate precursor. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and H-2/temperature programmed redution (TPR) studies. The cubic fluorite structure remained intact up to 50% of Sri substitution in CeO2, and the compounds were stable up to 700 C. Oxygen storage capacity of Ce1-xSnxO2 was found to be much higher than that of Ce1-xZrxO2 due to accessible Ce4+/Ce3+ and Sn4+/Sn2+ redox couples at temperatures between 200 and 400 C. Pd 21 ions in Ce0.78Sn0.2Pd0.02O2-delta are highly ionic, and the lattice oxygen of this catalyst is highly labile, leading to low temperature CO to CO2 conversion. The rate of CO oxidation was 2 mu mol g(-1) s(-1) at 50 degrees C. NO reduction by CO with 70% N-2 selectivity was observed at similar to 200 degrees C and 100% N-2 selectivity below 260 degrees C with 1000-5000 ppm NO. Thus, Pd2+ ion substituted Ce1-xSnxO2 is a superior catalyst compared to Pd2+ ions in CeO2, Ce1-xZrxO2, and Ce1-xTixO2 for low temperature exhaust applications due to the involvement of the Sn2+/Sn4+ redox couple along with Pd2+/Pd-0 and Ce4+/Ce3+ couples.

In the present investigation, two nozzle configurations are used for spray deposition, convergent nozzle (nozzle-A), and convergent nozzle with 2 mm parallel portion attached at its end (nozzle-C) without changing the exit area. First, the conditions for subambient aspiration pressure, i.e., pressure at the tip of the melt delivery tube, are established by varying the protrusion length of the melt delivery tube at different applied gas pressures for both of the nozzles. Using these conditions, spray deposits in a reproducible manner are successfully obtained for 7075 Al alloy. The effect of applied gas pressure, flight distance, and nozzle configuration on various characteristics of spray deposition, viz., yield, melt flow rate, and gas-to-metal ratio, is examined. The over-spray powder is also characterized with respect to powder size distribution, shape, and microstructure. Some of the results are explained with the help of numerical analysis presented in an earlier article.

Flower-like nickel nanocone structures are synthesized by a simple chemical reduction method using hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent. The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of as synthesized products are studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometer. The morphology evolution is studied by varying the reaction temperature and concentration of nickel chloride keeping other conditions unchanged.

Induction of follicle stimulating hormone receptor in the granulosa cells of intact immature rat ovary by diethylstilbesterol, an estrogen, has been studied. A single injection of 4 mg of diethylstilbesterol produced 72 h later a 3-fold increase in follicle stimulating hormone receptor concentration as monitored by [125I]-oFSH binding to isolated cells. The newly induced receptors were kinetically indistinguishable from the preexisting ones, as determined by Lineweaver-Burk plot of the binding data. The induced receptors were functional as evidenced by increased ability of the granulosa cells to incorporate [3H]-leucine into cellular proteins. Neutralization of endogenous follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone by administering specific antisera had no effect on the ability of diethylstilbesterol to induce follicle stimulating hormone receptors, whereas blockade of endogenous prolactin secretion by ergobromocryptin administration significantly inhibited (∼ 30 %) the response to diethylstilbesterol; this inhibition could be completely relieved by ovine prolactin treatment. However, ovine prolactin at the dose tried did not by itself enhance follicle stimulating hormone receptor level. Administration of ergobromocryptin to adult cycling rats at noon of proestrus brought about as measured on diestrusII, (a) a reduction of both follicle stimulating hormone (∼ 30 %) and luteinizing hormone (∼ 45 %) receptor concentration in granulosa cells, (b) a drastic reduction in the ovarian tissue estradiol with no change in tissue progesterone and (c) reduction in the ability of isolated granulosa cells to convert testosterone to estradiol in response to follicle stimulating hormone. Ergobromocryptin treatment affected only prolactin and not follicle stimulating hormone or luteinizing hormone surges on the proestrus evening. Treatment of rats with ergobromocryptin at proestrus noon followed by an injection of ovine prolactin (1 mg) at 1700 h of the same day completely reversed the ergobromocryptin induced reduction in ovarian tissue estradiol as well as the aromatase activity of the granulosa cells on diestrus II, thus suggesting a role for proestrus prolactin surge in the follicular maturation process.

Discharge periods of lead-acid batteries are significantly reduced at subzero centigrade temperatures. The reduction is more than what can he expected due to decreased rates of various processes caused by a lowering of temperature and occurs despite the fact that active materials are available for discharge. It is proposed that the major cause for this is the freezing of the electrolyte. The concentration of acid decreases during battery discharge with a consequent increase in the freezing temperature. A battery freezes when the discharge temperature falls below the freezing temperature. A mathematical model is developed for conditions where charge-transfer reaction is the rate-limiting step. and Tafel kinetics are applicable. It is argued that freezing begins from the midplanes of electrodes and proceeds toward the reservoir in-between. Ionic conduction stops when one of the electrodes freezes fully and the time taken to reach that point, namely the discharge period, is calculated. The predictions of the model compare well to observations made at low current density (C/5) and at -20 and -40 degrees C. At higher current densities, however, diffusional resistances become important and a more complicated moving boundary problem needs to be solved to predict the discharge periods. Calciothermic reduction of TiO2: A diagrammatic assessment of the thermodynamic limit of deoxidation
Resumo:
Calciothermic reduction of TiO2 provides a potentially low-cost route to titanium production. Presented in this article is a suitably designed diagram, useful for assessing the degree of reduction of TiO2 and residual oxygen contamination in metal as a function of reduction temperature and other process parameters. The oxygen chemical potential diagram à la Ellingham-Richardson-Jeffes is useful for visualization of the thermodynamics of reduction reactions at high temperatures. Although traditionally the diagram depicts oxygen potentials corresponding to the oxidation of different metals to their corresponding oxides or of lower oxides to higher oxides, oxygen potentials associated with solution phases at constant composition can be readily superimposed. The usefulness of the diagram for an insightful analysis of calciothermic reduction, either direct or through an electrochemical process, is discussed. Identified are possible process variations, modeling and optimization strategies.

Graphene oxide (GO) is assembled on a gold substrate by a layer-by-layer technique using a self-assembled cystamine monolayer. The negatively charged GO platelets are attached to the positively charged cystamine monolayer through electrostatic interactions. Subsequently, it is shown that the GO can be reduced electrochemically using applied DC bias by scanning the potential from 0 to -1 V vs a saturated calomel electrode in an aqueous electrolyte. The GO and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) are characterized by Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A clear shift of the G band from 1610 cm-1 of GO to 1585 cm-1 of RGO is observed. The electrochemical reduction is followed in situ by micro Raman spectroscopy by carrying out Raman spectroscopic studies during the application of DC bias. The GO and RGO films have been characterized by conductive AFM that shows an increase in the current flow by at least 3 orders of magnitude after reduction. The electrochemical method of reducing GO may open up another way of controlling the reduction of GO and the extent of reduction to obtain highly conducting graphene on electrode materials.

Experimental studies reveal a reduction in the values of permittivity for epoxy nanocomposites; at low filler loadings as compared to neat epoxy over a wide frequency range. This permittivity reduction is attributed to the interaction dynamics between nanoparticles: and epoxy chains at the interface region and interestingly, this interaction has also been found to influence the glass transition temperatures (T-g) of the examined nanocomposite systems. Accordingly, a dual nanolayer interface model for an epoxy based nanocomposite system is analyzed to explain the obtained permittivity characteristics.
