A new diazotizing reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of nitrite is described. The method is based on diazotization-coupling reaction between dapsone and phloroglucinol in hydrochloric acid medium. The reactions were conducted at room temperature, the molor absorptivity at 425 nm is 4.28 x 10(4) 1 Mol, (1)cm(-1) and was stable for 50 h. Beer's law was obeyed in the nitrite range of 0.008 - 1.0 mug ml(-1). Tolerance limits were tested for 33 species. The method has been found to be applicable for the determination of nitrite in natural and wastewater.

Nanoparticle synthesis in a microemulsion route is typically controlled by changing the water to surfactant ratio, concentration of precursors, and/or concentration of micelles. The experiments carried out in this work with chloroauric acid and hydrazine hydrate as precursors in water/AOT-Brij30/isooctane microemulsions show that the reagent addition rate can also be used to tune the size of stable spherical gold nanoparticles to some extent. The particle size goes through a minimum with variation in feed addition rate. The increase in particle size with an increase in reaction temperature is in agreement with an earlier report. A population balance model is used to interpret the experimental findings. The reduced extent of nucleation at low feed addition rates and suppression of nucleation due to the finite rate of mixing at higher addition rates produce a minimum in particle size. The increase in particle size at higher reaction temperatures is explained through an increase in fusion efficiency of micelles which dissipates supersaturation; increase in solubility is shown to play an insignificant role. The moderate polydispersity of the synthesized particles is due to the continued nucleation and growth of particles. The polydispersity of micelle sizes by itself plays a minor role.

Environmental concerns regarding the use of certain chemicals in the froth flotation of minerals have led investigators to explore biological entities as potential substitutes for the reagents in vogue. Despite the fact that several microorganisms have been used for the separation of a variety of mineral systems, a detailed characterization of the biochemical molecules involved therein has not been reported so far. In this investigation, the selective flotation of sphalerite from a sphalerite-galena mineral mixture has been achieved using the cellular components of Bacillus species. The key constituent primarily responsible for the flotation of sphalerite has been identified as DNA, which functions as a bio-collector. Furthermore, using reconstitution studies, the obligatory need for the presence of non-DNA components as bio-depressants for galena has been demonstrated. A probable model involving these entities in the selective flotation of sphalerite from the mineral mixture has been discussed.

Organoselenium compounds have attracted intense research owing to their unique biological properties as well as pharmaceutical significance. Progress has been made in developing reagents for incorporation of selenium in an efficient and controlled manner. Herein, we present a review on the recently developed selenium reagent, tetraethylammonium tetraselenotungstate, Et4N](2)WSe4 as a versatile selenium transfer reagent in organic synthesis. Tetraselenotungstate has been successfully used for the synthesis of a number of functionalized diselenides, sugar- and nucleoside-derived diselenides, seleno-cystines, selenohomocystines, selenoamides, selenoureas and sugar- and nucleoside-based cyclic-selenide derivatives. Additionally, this reagent has been employed for the ring opening of aziridines to synthesize a variety of beta-aminodiselenides. A new selena-aza-Payne type rearrangement of aziridinemethanoltosylates mediated by tetraselenotungstate for the synthesis of allyl amines is also discussed.

An easy and mild method has been developed for the synthesis of mixed glycosyl disulfides/selenenylsulfides from glycosyl halides and diaryl/dialkyl dichalcogenides in the presence of benzyltriethylammonium tetrathiomolybdate (BnEt3N)(2)MoS4]. The salient feature of this method is the sulfur transfer from BnEt3N](2)MoS4 to form glycosyl disulfides which with excess tetrathiomolybdate further undergo exchange reaction with other dichalcogenides in a one-pot operation. We report here the first general method for the geminal diamination and an intermolecular metal-free, geminal aminooxygenation of vinylarenes using hypervalent iodine reagent. A new m-CPBA mediated geminal aminooxygenation is also reported. A novel reagent-switch for the control of migrating group by controlling the two independent geminal addition paths is developed. Deuterium labelling studies and the control studies have provided unambiguous evidences for the phenyl migration and hydride migration in the oxidative geminal difunctionalization process mediated by Phl(OCOCF3)(2) and m-CPBA, respectively through a semi-pinacol rearrangement. A general method for the preparation of novel disulfide-tethered macrocyclic diacylglycerols (DAGs) has been described. Overall synthesis involved stepwise protection, acylation, and deprotection to yield the bis(omega-bromoacyl) glycerols. In the crucial macrocyclization step, a unique reagent, benzyltriethylammonium tetrathiomolybdate (BTAT), has been used to convert individual bis(omega-bromoacyl) glycerols to their respective macrocyclic disulfides. DAG 6, which had ether linkages between hydrocarbon chains and the glycerol backbone, was also synthesized from an appropriate precursor using a similar protocol. One of the DAGs (DAG 5) had a carbon-carbon tether instead of a disulfide one and was synthesized using modified Glaser coupling. Preparation of alpha-disulfide-tethered DAG (DAG 4) required an alternative method, as treatment of the bisbromo precursor with BTAT gave a mixture of several compounds from which separation of the target molecule was cumbersome. To avoid this problem, the bisbromide was converted to its corresponding dithiocyanate, which on further treatment with BTAT yielded the desired DAG (DAG 4) in good yield. Upon treatment with the reducing agent dithiothreitol (DTT), the DAGs that contain a disulfide tether could be quantitatively converted to their "open-chain" thiol analogues. These macrocyclic DAGs and their reduced "open-chain" analogues have been incorporated in DPPC vesicles to study their effect on model membranes. Upon incorporation of DAG 1 in DPPC vesicles, formation of new isotropic phases was observed by P-31 NMR, These isotropic phases disappeared completely on opening the macrocyclic ring by a reducing agent. The thermotropic properties of DPPC bilayers having DAGs (1-6) incorporated at various concentrations were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Incorporation of DAGs in general reduced the cooperativity unit (CU) of the vesicles. Similar experiments with reduced "open-chain" DAGs incorporated in a DPPC bilayer indicated a recovery of CU with respect to their macrocyclic "disulfide" counterparts. The effect of inclusion of these DAGs on the activity of phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) was studied in vitro. Incorporation of DAC 1 in DPPC membranes potentiated both bee venom and cobra venom PLA(2) activities.

Ternary L-glutamine (L-gln) copper(II) complexes [Cu(L-gln)(B)(H2O)](X) (B = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), X = 0.5SO(4)(2-), 1; B = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), X = ClO4-, 2) and [Cu(L-gln)(dpq)(ClO4)] (3) (dpq, dipyridoquinoxaline) are prepared and characterized by physicochemical methods. The DNA binding and cleavage activity of the complexes have been studied. Complexes 1-3 are structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complexes show distorted square pyramidal (4+1) CuN3O2 coordination geometry in which the N,O-donor amino acid and the N, N-donor heterocyclic base bind at the basal plane with a H2O or perchlorate as the axial ligand. The crystal structures of the complexes exhibit chemically significant hydrogen bonding interactions besides showing coordination polymer formation. The complexes display a d-d electronic band in the range of 610-630 nm in aqueous-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution (9:1 v/v). The quasireversible cyclic voltammetric response observed near -0.1 V versus SCE in DMF-TBAP is assignable to the Cu(II)/Cu(I) couple. The binding affinity of the complexes to calf thymus (CT) DNA follows the order: 3 (dpq) > 2 (phen) >> 1 (bpy). Complexes 2 and 3 show DNA cleavage activity in dark in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as a reducing agent via a mechanistic pathway forming hydroxyl radical as the reactive species. The dpq complex 3 shows efficient photoinduced DNA cleavage activity on irradiation with a monochromatic UV light of 365 nm in absence of any external reagent. The cleavage efficiency of the DNA minor groove binding complexes follows the order:3 > 2 >> 1. The dpq complex exhibits photocleavage of DNA on irradiation with visible light of 647.1 nm. Mechanistic data on the photo-induced DNA cleavage reactions reveal the involvement of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) as the reactive species in a type-II pathway. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The relationship between EUF extractable nutrients and conventional soil test extractable nutrients in the acid soils of Southern India on one hand and that between EUF values and tea productivity on the other are described. Close correlation exists between EUF-NO3–N at 20°C and CuSO4–Ag2SO4-extractable NO3–N (r=0.98***), EUF-Norg and Morgan's reagent extractable NH4–N (r=0.97***), total EUF-N and CuSO4–Ag2SO4-extractable NO3–N plus Morgan's reagent NH4–N (r=0.96***), EUF-P at 20°C and modified Bray II-P (r=0.93***) and EUF-P at 20°C plus that at 80°C and modified Bray II-P (r=0.91***). The EUF-K at 20°C shows close correlation with NH4OAc–K (r=0.80***), Ag-thiourea-K (r=0.86***) and Morgan's reagent-K (r=0.84***) whereas the EUF-K at 80°C shows close correlation with the difference in K contents of NH4OAc–K and Ag-thiourea-K (r=0.92***) or of NH4OAc–K and Morgan's reagent-K (r=0.93***) and fixed NH4–N (r=0.89***). EUF-Ca, EUF-Mg and EUF-Mn do not show any relationship with conventional soil test values. Tea productivity is strongly associated with EUF-N and EUF-P extracted at 20°C.
Spirocyclic phosphazenes derived from the reaction of N3P3Cl6 and N4P4Cl8 with bifunctional reagents
Resumo:
Four possible reaction paths may be envisaged when a chlorocyclophosphazene reacts with a bifunctional reagent (FIGURE). He have shown recently that 1,2-diaminoethane and ethanolamine react initially with N3P3CI 6 to give the spirocyclic derivatives, N3P3CI4(HNCH2CH2X) X = NH, 0 (I). Further reaction with these bifunctional reagents leads to the formation of non-crystalline resins [reaction (iii)] albeit two isomeric bls(spirocyclic)- ethanolamino derivatives were isolated in low yields (vSZ).

The interfacial shear rheological properties of a continuous single-crystalline film of CuS and a 3D particulate gel of CdS nanoparticles (3−5 nm in diameter) formed at toluene−water interfaces have been studied. The ultrathin films (50 nm in thickness) are formed in situ in the shear cell through a reaction at the toluene−water interface between a metal−organic compound in the organic layer and an appropriate reagent for sulfidation in the aqueous layer. Linear viscoelastic spectra of the nanofilms reveal solid-like rheological behavior with the storage modulus higher than the loss modulus over the range of angular frequencies probed. Large strain amplitude sweep measurements on the CdS nanofilms formed at different reactant concentrations suggest that they form a weakly flocculated gel. Under steady shear, the films exhibit a yield stress, followed by a steady shear thinning at high shear rates. The viscoelastic and flow behavior of these films that are in common with those of many 3D “soft” materials like gels, foams, and concentrated colloidal suspensions can be described by the “soft” glassy rheology model.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa tRNA was treated with iodine, CNBr and N-ethylmaleimide,three thionucleotide-specific reagents. Reaction with iodine resulted in extensive loss of acceptor activity by lysine tRNA, glutamic acid tRNA, glutamine tRNA, serine tRNA and tyrosine tRNA. CNBr treatment resulted in high loss of acceptor ability by lysine tRNA, glutamic acid tRNA and glutamine tRNA. Only the acceptor ability of tyrosine tRNA was inhibited up to 66% by N-ethylmaleimide treatment, a reagent specific for 4-thiouridine. By the combined use of benzoylated DEAE-cellulose and DEAESephadex columns, lysine tRNA of Ps. aeruginosa was resolved into two isoaccepting species, a major, tRNAL'y and a minor, tRNA'Ys. Co-chromatography of 14C-labelled tRNALYS and 3H-labelled tRNALy, on benzoylated DEAE-cellulose at pH4.5 gave two distinct, non-superimposable profiles for the two activity peaks, suggesting that they were separate species. The acceptor activity of these two species was inhibited by about 95% by iodine and CNBr. Both the species showed equal response to codons AAA and AAG and also for poly(A) and poly(A1,Gl) suggesting that the anticodon of these species was UUU. Chemical modification of these two species by iodine did not inhibit the coding response. The two species of lysine of Ps. aeruginosa are truly redundant in that they are indistinguishable either by chemical modification or by their coding response.

A new analogue of vitamin A, viz., retinoic acid anhydride was prepared, for the first time, by the action of thionyl chloride on retinoic acid in benzene containing pyridine. The amhydride was charcterised by its chromatographic properties, elemental analysis, ultraviolet absorption, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral characteristics. The compound could be readily hydrolysed to retinoic acid both by acid and alkali treatments and reduced by lithium aluminium hydride to vitamin A alcohol (retinol). The spectral changes with antimony trichloride reagent were similar to those observed for retinoic acid. The metabolism of retinoic acid anhydride was found to be similar to that of retinoic acic. When administered either orally or intraperitoneally, the compound promotes growth in vitamin A-deficient rats. Time-course experiments revealed that retinoic acid anhydride is converted into retinoic acid by non-enzymatic hydrolysis and thereby exerts its biological activity. The biopotency of the anhydride was found to be nearly the same as that of the acid. A new method of preparing esters of retinoic acid employing retinoic acid anhydride as an intermediate, has been described.
