Metal-ion (Ag, Co, Ni, and Pd) doped TiO2 nanocatalysts were successfully embedded on carbon-covered alumina supports. The CCA-embedded catalysts were crystalline and had a high surface area compared to the free metal-ion doped titania nanocatalysts while they still retained the anatase phase of the core TiO2. These catalysts were photocatalytically active under solar light irradiation. Rhodamine B was used as a model pollutant and the reactivity followed a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. The reaction rate of the CCA-supported catalysts was Pd > Ag > Co > Ni. Among the ratios of the CCA:catalyst used, it was found that the 1:1 ratio had the fastest reaction rate, followed by the 1:2 ratio, while the 2:1 ratio exhibited the lowest reaction rate. The CCA/metal-ion doped titania were found to have photocatalytic activities comparable with those of CCA-supported titania.

A new family of ricinoleic acid based polyesters was synthesized using catalyst free melt-condensation polymerization with sebacic acid, citric acid, mannitol and ricinoleic acid as precursors. The use of FT-IR and NMR characterisation techniques confirms the presence of ester linkages in the as-synthesized polymers. Depending on the precursor combination, their relative amount and the degree of curing, a broad range of elastic modulus (22-327 MPa) and tensile strength (0.7-12.7 MPa) can be obtained in the newly synthesized biopolymers. The polymers show rubbery behaviour at a physiological temperature (37 degrees C) and the contact angles of the synthesized polymers fall in the range of 42 degrees to 71 degrees, making them ideal substrates to study delivery of drugs through polymer scaffolds. The cytocompatibility assessment of the cured polymers confirmed good cell attachment and growth of smooth muscle cells (C2C12 myoblast cells). Importantly, oriented cell growth was observed after culturing myoblast cells for 3 days. The in vitro degradation in PBS indicates that the mild cured polymers follow a first order reaction kinetics and have degradation rate constants in the range of 0.009-0.038 h(-1), depending on the relative proportions of monomers. Overall, the results of our study indicate that the physical properties can be tailored by varying the composition of the monomers and curing conditions in the newly developed polyesters. Hence, they may be used as potential substrates for tissue engineering scaffolds and for localized drug delivery.

In contrast to the widely reported beneficial aspects of spark plasma sintering in developing materials with better properties, we report here two interesting aspects recorded with difficult-to-sinter titanium diboride: (a) in situ formation of second phase (TiB) and (b) inferior hardness (by similar to 30%) and elastic modulus (by similar to 20%) for spark plasma sintered TiB2, with respect to hot pressed TiB2. The formation of TiB is discussed with reference to the enhanced reaction kinetics in the presence of pulsed electric field. (C) 2013 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The paper focuses on the use of oxygen and steam as the gasification agents in the thermochemical conversion of biomass to produce hydrogen rich syngas, using a downdraft reactor configuration. Performance of the reactor is evaluated for different equivalence ratios (ER), steam to biomass ratios (SBR) and moisture content in the fuel. The results are compared and evaluated with chemical equilibrium analysis and reaction kinetics along with the results available in the literature. Parametric study suggests that, with increase in SBR, hydrogen fraction in the syngas increases but necessitates an increase in the ER to maintain reactor temperature toward stable operating conditions. SBR is varied from 0.75 to 2.7 and ER from 0.18 to 0.3. The peak hydrogen yield is found to be 104g/kg of biomass at SBR of 2.7. Further, significant enhancement in H-2 yield and H-2 to CO ratio is observed at higher SBR (SBR=1.5-2.7) compared with lower range SBR (SBR=0.75-1.5). Experiments were conducted using wet wood chips to induce moisture into the reacting system and compare the performance with dry wood with steam. The results clearly indicate the both hydrogen generation and the gasification efficiency ((g)) are better in the latter case. With the increase in SBR, gasification efficiency ((g)) and lower heating value (LHV) tend to reduce. Gasification efficiency of 85.8% is reported with LHV of 8.9MJNm(-3) at SBR of 0.75 compared with 69.5% efficiency at SBR of 2.5 and lower LHV of 7.4 at MJNm(-3) at SBR of 2.7. These are argued on the basis of the energy required for steam generation and the extent of steam consumption during the reaction, which translates subsequently in the LHV of syngas. From the analysis of the results, it is evident that reaction kinetics plays a crucial role in the conversion process. The study also presents the importance of reaction kinetics, which controls the overall performance related to efficiency, H-2 yield, H-2 to CO fraction and LHV of syngas, and their dependence on the process parameters SBR and ER. Eu2+ ion doped into a suitable host results in an efficient luminophore with engineering relevance; however stabilizing this ion in a host is known to be a challenge. Here we report a novel approach for the synthesis of efficient CaAl2O4 phosphor containing Eu2+ luminophore and Cr3+ activator. CaAl2O4:Eu2+, Cr3+ is prepared by a solution combustion (SCS) method using (i) urea, (ii) oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) and (iii) fuel-blend (in which overall fuel to oxidizer ratio (F/O) = 1). A Multi-channel thermocouple setup is used to measure the flame temperatures to study the nature of combustion of various fuel mixtures. The variation of adiabatic flame temperature is calculated theoretically for different urea/ODH mixture ratios according to thermodynamic concept and correlated with the observed flame temperatures. Blue emission of the CaAl2O4:Eu2+ phosphor is enhanced similar to 20 times using the fuel-blend approach. Using the observed reaction kinetics, and the known chemistry of smoldering type combustion, a mechanism is proposed for the observed stabilization of Eu2+ ion in the fuel-blend case. This also explains the observed improvement in blue light emission. We show that the right choice of the fuel ratio is essential for enhancing photoluminescence (PL) emission. The PL intensity is highest for ODH lean and urea rich combination (i.e. when the ratio of ODH:urea is 1:5); measured color purity is comparable to commercial blue phosphor, BAM:Eu2+. Late-transition-metal-doped Pt clusters are prevalent in CO oxidation catalysis, as they exhibit better catalytic activity than pure Pt, while reducing the effective cost and poisoning However, completely eliminating the critical problem of Pt poisoning still poses a big challenge. Here, we report for the first time that, among the bimetallic clusters ((Pt3M where M = Co, Ni, and Cu)/MgO(100)), the CO adsorption site inverts for Pt3Co/MgO(100) from Pt to Co, due to the complete uptake of Pt d-states by lattice oxygen. While this resolves the problem of Pt poisoning, good reaction kinetics are predicted through low barriers for Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars van Krevelen (MvK) mechanisms of CO oxidation for Pt3Co/MgO(100) and Li-doped MgO(100), respectively. Li doping in MgO(100) compensates for the charge imbalance caused by a spontaneous oxygen vacancy formation. Pt-3 Co/Li-doped MgO(100) stands out as an exceptional CO oxidation catalyst, giving an MvK reaction barrier as low as 0.11 eV. We thereby propose a novel design strategy of d-band center inversion for CO oxidation catalysts with no Pt poisoning and excellent reaction kinetics.

We show that data from recent experiments carried out on the kinetics of DNA escape from alpha-hemolysin nanopores [M. Wiggin, C. Tropini, C. T. Cossa, N. N. Jetha, and A. Marziali, Biophys. J. 95, 5317 (2008)] may be rationalized by a model of chain dynamics based on the anomalous diffusion of a particle moving in a harmonic well in the presence of a delta function sink. The experiments of Wiggin found, among other things, that the occasional occurrence of unusually long escape times in the distribution of chain trapping events led to nonexponential decays in the survival probability, S(t), of the DNA molecules within the nanopore. Wiggin ascribed this nonexponentiality to the existence of a distribution of trapping potentials, which they suggested was theresult of stochastic interactions between the bases of the DNA and the amino acids located on the surface of the nanopore. Based on this idea, they showed that the experimentally determined S(t) could be well fit in both the short and long time regimes by a function of the form (1+t/tau)(-alpha) (the so called Becquerel function). In our model, S(t) is found to be given by a Mittag-Leffler function at short times and by a generalized Mittag-Leffler function at long times. By suitable choice of certain parameter values, these functions are found to fit the experimental S(t) even better than the Becquerel function. Anomalous diffusion of DNA within the trap prior to escape over a barrier of fixed height may therefore provide a second, plausible explanation of the data, and may offer fresh perspectives on similar trapping and escape problems.

More than 70 molecules of varied nature have been identified in the envelopes of carbon-rich stars through their spectral fingerprints in the microwave or far infrared regions. Many of them are carbon chain molecules and radicals, and a significant number are unique to the circumstellar medium. The determination of relevant laboratory kinetics data is critical to keep up with the development of the high spectral and spatial resolution observations and of the refinement of chemical models. Neutralneutral reactions of the CN radical with unsaturated hydrocarbons could be a dominant route in the formation of cyanopolyynes, even at low temperatures and deserve a detailed laboratory investigation. The approach we have developed aims to bridge the temperature gap between resistively heated flow tubes and shock tubes. The present kinetic measurements are obtained using a new reactor combining a high-enthalpy source with a flow tube and a pulsed laser photolysislaser-induced fluorescence system to probe the undergoing chemical reactions. The high-enthalpy flow tube has been used to measure the rate constant of the reaction of the CN radical with propane (C3H8), propene (C3H6), allene (C3H4), 1,3-butadiene (1,3-C4H6), and 1-butyne (C4H6) over a temperature range extending from 300 to 1200 K. All studied reactions of CN with unsaturated hydrocarbons are rapid, with rate coefficients greater than 10-10 cm3 center dot molecule-1 center dot s-1 and exhibit slight negative temperature dependence above room temperature. A plausible microkinetic model has been proposed for the CO oxidation reaction catalysed by palladium (Pd) with the kinetic parameters obtained from the literature. A robust rate expression using the reaction route analysis has been developed for the presented microkinetic scheme and the obtained rate expressions have been validated against the experimental data presented in the literature. A wide range of experimental conditions ranging from single Pd crystals under ultra-high vacuum conditions and impregnated Pd used for fixed bed experiments under atmospheric pressure has been used to validate the reaction mechanism. The kinetics and mechanism of anodic oxidation of chlorate ion to perchlorate ion on titanium-substrate lead dioxide electrodes have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. It has been demonstrated that the ionic strength of the solution has a marked effect on the rate of perchlorate formation, whereas the pH of the solution does not influence the reaction rate. Experimental data have also been obtained on the dependence of the reaction rate on the concentration of chlorate ion in the solution at constant ionic strength. With these data, diagnostic kinetic criteria have been deduced and compared with corresponding quantities predicted for various possible mechanisms including double layer effects on electrode kinetics. It has thus been shown that the most probable mechanisms for anodic chlorate oxidation on lead dioxide anodes involve the discharge of a water molecule in a one-electron transfer step to give an adsorbed hydroxyl radical as the rate-determining step for the overall reaction.

Enzyme is a dynamic entity with diverse time scales, ranging from picoseconds to seconds or even longer. Here we develop a rate theory for enzyme catalysis that includes conformational dynamics as cycling on a two-dimensional (2D) reaction free energy surface involving an intrinsic reaction coordinate (X) and an enzyme conformational coordinate (Q). The validity of Michaelis-Menten (MM) equation, i.e., substrate concentration dependence of enzymatic velocity, is examined under a nonequilibrium steady state. Under certain conditions, the classic MM equation holds but with generalized microscopic interpretations of kinetic parameters. However, under other conditions, our rate theory predicts either positive (sigmoidal-like) or negative (biphasic-like) kinetic cooperativity due to the modified effective 2D reaction pathway on X-Q surface, which can explain non-MM dependence previously observed on many monomeric enzymes that involve slow or hysteretic conformational transitions. Furthermore, we find that a slow conformational relaxation during product release could retain the enzyme in a favorable configuration, such that enzymatic turnover is dynamically accelerated at high substrate concentrations. The effect of such conformation retainment in a nonequilibrium steady state is evaluated.

Vapour phase oxidation of furfural over vanadium pentoxide catalyst was studied using an isothermal flow reactor in the temperature range of 220–280°C. Maleic anhydride and carbon dioxide are found to be formed from furfural by a parallel reaction scheme. The following rate equation based on the two-stage redox mechanism—the substance to be oxidized reduces the catalyst which in turn is reoxidized by oxygen from the feed—is found to explain the data satisfactorily. The reoxidation of the reduced catalyst was found to be the rate controlling step.

It is shown that the effect of adsorption of inert molecules on electrode reaction rates is completely accounted for, by introducing into the rate equation, adsorption-induced changes in both the effective electrode area as well as in the electrostatic potential at the reaction site with an additional term for the noncoulombic interaction between the reactant and the adsorbate. The electrostatic potential at the reaction site due to the adsorbed layer is calculated using a model of discretely-distributed molecules in parallel orientation when adsorbed on the electrode with an allowance for thermal agitation. The resulting expression, which is valid for the limiting case of low coverages, is used to predict the types of molecular surfactants that are most likely to be useful for acceleration and inhibition of electrode reactions.
