A molecular dynamics study of the dependence of diffusivity of the cation on ionic radii in molten AgI is reported. We have employed modified Parinello-Rahman-Vashistha interionic pair potential proposed by Shimojo and Kobayashi.(1) Our results suggest that the diffusivity of the cation exhibits an increase followed by a decrease as the ionic radius is increased. Several structural and dynamical properties are reported.

In the present study, the effect of iodine concentration on the photovoltaic properties of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) based on TiO2 nanoparticles for three different ratios of lithium iodide (LiI) and iodine (I-2) has been investigated. The electron transport properties and interfacial recombination kinetics have been evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It is found that increasing the concentration of lithium iodide for all ratios of iodine and lithium iodide decreases the open-circuit voltage (V-oc) whereas short circuit current density (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) shows improvement. The reduction in V-oc and increment in J(sc) is ascribed to the higher concentration of absorptive Li+ cations which shifts the conduction band edge of TiO2 positively. The increase in FF is due to the reduction in electron transport resistance (R-omega) of the cell. In addition for all the ratios of LiI/I-2 increasing the concentration of I-2 decreases the V-oc which is attributed to the increased recombination with tri-iodide ions (I-3(-)) as verified from the low recombination resistance (R-k) and electron lifetime (tau) values obtained by EIS analysis. A versatile aerobic catalytic system (I-2 and O-2/TBHP) for C-H functionalization is reported. This CDC (cross-dehydrogentive coupling) reaction is compatible with a large number of nucleophiles and is performed under ambient reaction conditions. The scope of the metal-free CDC is illustrated by synthesizing a variety of functionalized tetrahydroisoquinolines and N,N-dimethylaniline. The highlight of the method is a Friedel-Crafts reaction of phenols and indole with tertiary amines.

Bentonite clay is identified as potential buffer in deep geological repositories (DGR) that store high level radioactive wastes (HLW) as the expansive clay satisfies the expected mechanical and physicochemical functions of the buffer material. In the deep geological disposal of HLW, iodine-129 is one of the significant nuclides, attributable to its long half-life (half life 1⁄4 1:7 × 107 years). However, the negative charge on the basal surface of bentonite particles precludes retention of iodide anions. To render the bentonite effective in retaining hazardous iodide species in DGR, improvement of the anion retention capacity of bentonite becomes imperative. The iodide retention capac-ity of bentonite is improved by admixing 10 and 20% Ag-kaolinite (Ag-K) with bentonite (B) on a dry mass basis. The present study produced Ag-kaolinite by heating silver nitrate-kaolinite mixes at 400°C. Marginal release of iodide retained by Ag-kaolinite occurred under extreme acidic (pH 1⁄4 2:5) and alkaline (pH 1⁄4 12:5) conditions. The swell pressure and iodide etention results of the B-Ag-K specimens bring out that mixing Ag-K with bentonite does not chemically modify the expansive clay; the mixing is physical in nature and Ag-K presence only contributes to iodide retention of the admixture. A novel method for alpha-hydroxylation of ketones using substoichiometric amount of iodine under metalfree conditions is described. This method has been successfully employed in synthesizing a variety of heterocyclic compounds, which are useful precursors. alpha-Hydroxylation of diketones and triketones are illustrated. This strategy provides a novel, efficient, mild and inexpensive method for alpha-hydroxylation of aryl ketones using a sub-stoichiometric amount of molecular iodine.

UVPES studies and ab initio and DFT computations have been done on the benzene...ICl complex; electron spectral data and computed orbital energies show that donor orbitals are stabilized and acceptor orbitals are destabilized due to complexation. Calculations predict an oblique structure for the complex in which the interacting site is a C=C bond center in the donor and iodine atom in the acceptor, in full agreement with earlier experimental reports. BSSE-corrected binding energies closely match the enthalpy of complexation reported, and the NBO analysis clearly reveals the involvement of the pi orbital of benzene and the sigma* orbital of ICl in the complex.

Administration of the antihypercholesterolaemic drug clofibrate stimulates the rates of synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins in rat liver. The biosynthesis of mitochondrial proteins also is enhanced by the drug. In drug-fed animals, the rates of incorporation in vivo of radioactive precursors into DNA, RNA and proteins are stimulated even when the liver undergoes regeneration following partial hepatectomy. The rate of synthesis of mitochondrial proteins in the regenerative phase is higher in clofibrate-fed animals. These effects are consistent with the hepatomegalic and mitochondria-proliferating property of the drug.

Bovine serum albumin conjugates of guanosine prepared by the periodate method was used as immunogen to elicit guanosine antibodies in rabbits. The specificities of the antibodies were studied by the inhibition of their binding to [3H]Gox-red, [32P]DNA and [3H]RNA by related non-radioactive compounds. A population of antibodies is specific to Gox-red with an average association constant of around 107M−1 at 4°C. There are a population of antibodies which bind to [32P]ssDNA and [3H]RNA specifically at guanosine residues. RNA binding antibodies were separated into two populations by affinity chromatography.

Many one-dimensional conductors show pronounced nonlinear electrical conduction. Some of them show very interesting electrical switching from a low conducting state to a high conducting state. Such electrical switching is often associated with memory. These are discussed with particular emphasis on charge transfer complexestmbine-tcnq, tmpd-tcnq, Cs2(tcnq)3,tea-(tcnq) 2 ando-tolidine-iodine.

Antibodies to deoxycytidylate (dpC) were elicited in rabbits using a thyroglobulin (Tg) conjugate of dpC. The specificity of the antibodies was determined by measuring the inhibition of the binding of [3H]dpC to the antibodies by various non-radioactive nucleotides or derivatives. The antibodies were found to distinguish dpC from pC and DNA from RNA, probably due to their specificity for the conformation of the deoxycytidylate.

35S-Labeled thionucleosides prepared from Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa tRNAs were chromatographed separately on a phosphocellulose column with a linear salt gradient of 0.005–0.1 M ammonium formate (pH 3.9). The thionucleosides of E. coli tRNA were quantitatively separated into four peaks which were identified using authentic samples as 4-thiouridine (78 %), 2-methylthio-N6-isopentenyladenosine (8 %), 2-thiocytidine (2.5 %) and 5-methylaminomethyl-2-thiouridine (11.5 %). In the case of P. aeruginosa tRNA four radioactive thionucleoside peaks were also observed. One major difference was the almost complete absence of 2-methylthio-N6-isopentenyladenosine and the presence of a new peak of radioactivity in the nucleosides of P. aeruginosa. The relative proportions of the various thionucleosides were found to be different in E. coli and P. aeruginosa tRNAs.

1. The mechanism of absorption of phosphatidylcholine was studied in rats by injecting into the intestine phosphatidylcholine specifically labelled either in the fatty acid or in the glycerol moiety or with 32P, when considerable amounts of 1-acyl-lysophosphatidylcholine were found in the intestinal lumen. 2-([14C]Acyl)phosphatidylcholine gave markedly more radioactive unesterified fatty acids in the lumen, compared with the 1-([14C]acyl) derivative. Some of the radioactivity from either the fatty acid or the glycerol moiety of the injected phosphatidylcholine appeared in the mucosal triacylglycerols. 2. Injection of 32P-labelled phosphatidylcholine or 32P-labelled lysophosphatidylcholine led to the appearance of radioactive glycerylphosphorylcholine, glycerophosphate and Pi in the mucosa. 3. Rat mucosa was found to contain a highly active glycerylphosphorylcholine diesterase. 4. It was concluded that the dietary phosphatidylcholine is hydrolysed in the intestinal lumen by the pancreatic phospholipase A to 1-acylglycerylphosphorylcholine, which on entering the mucosal cell is partly reacylated to phosphatidylcholine, and the rest is further hydrolysed to glycerylphosphorylcholine, glycerophosphate, glycerol and Pi. The fatty acids and glycerophosphate are then reassembled to give triacylglycerols via the Kennedy (1961) pathway.
