The applicability of Artificial Neural Networks for predicting the stress-strain response of jointed rocks at varied confining pressures, strength properties and joint properties (frequency, orientation and strength of joints) has been studied in the present paper. The database is formed from the triaxial compression tests on different jointed rocks with different confining pressures and different joint properties reported by various researchers. This input data covers a wide range of rock strengths, varying from very soft to very hard. The network was trained using a 3 layered network with feed forward back propagation algorithm. About 85% of the data was used for training and remaining15% for testing the predicting capabilities of the network. Results from the analyses were very encouraging and demonstrated that the neural network approach is efficient in capturing the complex stress-strain behaviour of jointed rocks. A single neural network is demonstrated to be capable of predicting the stress-strain response of different rocks, whose intact strength vary from 11.32 MPa to 123 MPa and spacing of joints vary from 10 cm to 100 cm for confining pressures ranging from 0 to 13.8 MPa.

This research is designed to develop a new technique for site characterization in a three-dimensional domain. Site characterization is a fundamental task in geotechnical engineering practice, as well as a very challenging process, with the ultimate goal of estimating soil properties based on limited tests at any half-space subsurface point in a site.In this research, the sandy site at the Texas A&M University's National Geotechnical Experimentation Site is selected as an example to develop the new technique for site characterization, which is based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) technology. In this study, a sequential approach is used to demonstrate the applicability of ANN to site characterization. To verify its robustness, the proposed new technique is compared with other commonly used approaches for site characterization. In addition, an artificial site is created, wherein soil property values at any half-space point are assumed, and thus the predicted values can compare directly with their corresponding actual values, as a means of validation. Since the three-dimensional model has the capability of estimating the soil property at any location in a site, it could have many potential applications, especially in such case, wherein the soil properties within a zone are of interest rather than at a single point. Examples of soil properties of zonal interest include soil type classification and liquefaction potential evaluation. In this regard, the present study also addresses this type of applications based on a site located in Taiwan, which experienced liquefaction during the 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan, Earthquake.

The Radius of Direct attraction of a discrete neural network is a measure of stability of the network. it is known that Hopfield networks designed using Hebb's Rule have a radius of direct attraction of Omega(n/p) where n is the size of the input patterns and p is the number of them. This lower bound is tight if p is no larger than 4. We construct a family of such networks with radius of direct attraction Omega(n/root plog p), for any p greater than or equal to 5. The techniques used to prove the result led us to the first polynomial-time algorithm for designing a neural network with maximum radius of direct attraction around arbitrary input patterns. The optimal synaptic matrix is computed using the ellipsoid method of linear programming in conjunction with an efficient separation oracle. Restrictions of symmetry and non-negative diagonal entries in the synaptic matrix can be accommodated within this scheme.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been found to be a robust tool to model many non-linear hydrological processes. The present study aims at evaluating the performance of ANN in simulating and predicting ground water levels in the uplands of a tropical coastal riparian wetland. The study involves comparison of two network architectures, Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) trained under five algorithms namely Levenberg Marquardt algorithm, Resilient Back propagation algorithm, BFGS Quasi Newton algorithm, Scaled Conjugate Gradient algorithm, and Fletcher Reeves Conjugate Gradient algorithm by simulating the water levels in a well in the study area. The study is analyzed in two cases-one with four inputs to the networks and two with eight inputs to the networks. The two networks-five algorithms in both the cases are compared to determine the best performing combination that could simulate and predict the process satisfactorily. Ad Hoc (Trial and Error) method is followed in optimizing network structure in all cases. On the whole, it is noticed from the results that the Artificial Neural Networks have simulated and predicted the water levels in the well with fair accuracy. This is evident from low values of Normalized Root Mean Square Error and Relative Root Mean Square Error and high values of Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency Index and Correlation Coefficient (which are taken as the performance measures to calibrate the networks) calculated after the analysis. On comparison of ground water levels predicted with those at the observation well, FFNN trained with Fletcher Reeves Conjugate Gradient algorithm taken four inputs has outperformed all other combinations.

Ground management problems are typically solved by the simulation-optimization approach where complex numerical models are used to simulate the groundwater flow and/or contamination transport. These numerical models take a lot of time to solve the management problems and hence become computationally expensive. In this study, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) models were developed and coupled for the management of groundwater of Dore river basin in France. The Analytic Element Method (AEM) based flow model was developed and used to generate the dataset for the training and testing of the ANN model. This developed ANN-PSO model was applied to minimize the pumping cost of the wells, including cost of the pipe line. The discharge and location of the pumping wells were taken as the decision variable and the ANN-PSO model was applied to find out the optimal location of the wells. The results of the ANN-PSO model are found similar to the results obtained by AEM-PSO model. The results show that the ANN model can reduce the computational burden significantly as it is able to analyze different scenarios, and the ANN-PSO model is capable of identifying the optimal location of wells efficiently.

This paper presents an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach for locating faults in distribution systems. Different from the traditional Fault Section Estimation methods, the proposed approach uses only limited measurements. Faults are located according to the impedances of their path using a Feed Forward Neural Networks (FFNN). Various practical situations in distribution systems, such as protective devices placed only at the substation, limited measurements available, various types of faults viz., three-phase, line (a, b, c) to ground, line to line (a-b, b-c, c-a) and line to line to ground (a-b-g, b-c-g, c-a-g) faults and a wide range of varying short circuit levels at substation, are considered for studies. A typical IEEE 34 bus practical distribution system with unbalanced loads and with three- and single- phase laterals and a 69 node test feeder with different configurations are considered for studies. The results presented show that the proposed approach of fault location gives close to accurate results in terms of the estimated fault location.

This paper presents the capability of the neural networks as a computational tool for solving constrained optimization problem, arising in routing algorithms for the present day communication networks. The application of neural networks in the optimum routing problem, in case of packet switched computer networks, where the goal is to minimize the average delays in the communication have been addressed. The effectiveness of neural network is shown by the results of simulation of a neural design to solve the shortest path problem. Simulation model of neural network is shown to be utilized in an optimum routing algorithm known as flow deviation algorithm. It is also shown that the model will enable the routing algorithm to be implemented in real time and also to be adaptive to changes in link costs and network topology. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Increased emphasis on rotorcraft performance and perational capabilities has resulted in accurate computation of aerodynamic stability and control parameters. System identification is one such tool in which the model structure and parameters such as aerodynamic stability and control derivatives are derived. In the present work, the rotorcraft aerodynamic parameters are computed using radial basis function neural networks (RBFN) in the presence of both state and measurement noise. The effect of presence of outliers in the data is also considered. RBFN is found to give superior results compared to finite difference derivatives for noisy data. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. The problem of denoising damage indicator signals for improved operational health monitoring of systems is addressed by applying soft computing methods to design filters. Since measured data in operational settings is contaminated with noise and outliers, pattern recognition algorithms for fault detection and isolation can give false alarms. A direct approach to improving the fault detection and isolation is to remove noise and outliers from time series of measured data or damage indicators before performing fault detection and isolation. Many popular signal-processing approaches do not work well with damage indicator signals, which can contain sudden changes due to abrupt faults and non-Gaussian outliers. Signal-processing algorithms based on radial basis function (RBF) neural network and weighted recursive median (WRM) filters are explored for denoising simulated time series. The RBF neural network filter is developed using a K-means clustering algorithm and is much less computationally expensive to develop than feedforward neural networks trained using backpropagation. The nonlinear multimodal integer-programming problem of selecting optimal integer weights of the WRM filter is solved using genetic algorithm. Numerical results are obtained for helicopter rotor structural damage indicators based on simulated frequencies. Test signals consider low order polynomial growth of damage indicators with time to simulate gradual or incipient faults and step changes in the signal to simulate abrupt faults. Noise and outliers are added to the test signals. The WRM and RBF filters result in a noise reduction of 54 - 71 and 59 - 73% for the test signals considered in this study, respectively. Their performance is much better than the moving average FIR filter, which causes significant feature distortion and has poor outlier removal capabilities and shows the potential of soft computing methods for specific signal-processing applications.
