Phase relationships in the CaO-SrO-CuO system in pure oxygen at 1.01 x 10(5) Pa pressure were determined by equilibrating different compositions at 1123 K for similar to 120 h and analyzing the phases present in the quenched samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX). Four solid solution series were observed in the system, The CawSr1-wO monoxide solid solution with rock-salt structure was found to exhibit an asymmetric miscibility gap, The mixing properties of the monoxide system were deduced using a subregular solution model, For the (CaxSr1-x)(2)CuO3 series, a complete solid solution range with orthorhombic space group Immm was obtained. Calcium substituted for strontium up to 68 at. % in SrCuO2+delta and 51.5 at. % in Sr14Cu24O41-delta. The tie lines between the solid solutions were determined accurately, The activity-composition relations in (CaxSr1-x)(2)CuO3, CaySr1-yCuO2+delta, and (Ca2Sr1-z)(14)Cu24O41-delta solid solutions were determined from experimental tie lines. Activities in the (CaxSr1-x)(2)CuO3 and CaySr1-yCuO2+delta series were close to the predictions of the Temkin model, The behavior of the (CazSr1-(z))(14)Cu24O41-delta solid solution was more complex, with the activity of SrCu(24/14)O-(41-delta/14) exhibiting both positive and negative deviations from ideality. Gibbs energy of formation of the CaCuO2+delta metastable phase at 1123 K was deduced from an analysis of the phase diagram.

Nicotinate-N-oxide and isonicotinate-N-oxide have been employed to synthesize four heterometallic metallamacrocycles (dppf)(2)Pd-2(nicotinate-N-oxide)(2)](OTf)(2) (1), (dppf)(2)Pt-2(nicotinate-N-oxide)(2)](OTf)(2) (2), (dppf) 2Pd2(isonicotinate-N-oxide)(2)](OTf)(2) (3) and (dppf)(2)Pt-2(isonicotinate-N-oxide)(2)](OTf)(2) (4). The complexes represent the first examples of metallamacrocycles driven by solely Pd(II)/Pt(II)-O coordination using carboxylate-N-oxide donor. All the complexes 1-4 are characterized by IR, UV-Vis, multinuclear NMR spectroscopic and ESI-MS studies. The molecular structures of the complexes 1 and 3 are unambiguously determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Despite the possibility of formation of several linkage isomers due to ambidentate nature of the donors, exclusive formation of 2 + 2] self-assembled single isomeric metallamacrocycle in each case is interesting observation. NMR spectra of liquid crystalline phases and the molecules dissolved therein, spinning at and near the magic angle provide information on the director dynamics and the order parameter. The studies on the dynamics of the liquid crystal director for sample spinning near magic angle in mesophases with positive and negative diamagnetic susceptibility anisotropies (Delta chi) and their mixtures with near-zero macroscopic diamagnetic susceptibility anisotropies have been reported. In systems with weakly positive Delta chi, the director has been observed to switch from an orientation parallel to the spinning axis at low rotational speeds to one perpendicular to the spinning axis at high rotational speeds, when the angle theta, the axis of rotation makes with the magnetic field is smaller than the magic angle theta(m). For systems with a small negative Delta chi, similar director behaviour has been observed for theta greater than theta(m). At magic angle, the spectra under slow spinning speeds exhibit a centre band and side bands at integral values of the spinning speeds. The intensities of the spinning side bands have been shown to contain information on the sign and the magnitude of the order parameter(s). The results are discussed with illustrative examples. Results on the orientation of the chemical shielding tensor obtained from a combination of the NMR studies in the solid and the liquid crystalline states, have been described.

In this work, we explore simultaneous design and material selection by posing it as an optimization problem. The underlying principles for our approach are Ashby's material selection procedure and structural optimization. For the simplicity and ease of initial implementation of the general procedure, truss structures under static load are considered in this work in view of maximum stiffness, minimum weight/cost and safety against failure. Along the lines of Ashby's material indices, a new design index is derived for trusses. This helps in choosing the most suitable material for any design of a truss. Using this, both the design space and material database are searched simultaneously using optimization algorithms. The important feature of our approach is that the formulated optimization problem is continuous even though the material selection is an inherently discrete problem.

In the paper, the total damping and synchronising torques, which determine the dynamic stability of a synchronous generator in a power system, have been traced to their origin. The positive and negative components released or consumed by the voltage regulator, and by the various windings of the machine, have been isolated, with the object of making a quantitative assessment of the effects of various gains and time constants on the dynamic stability of a synchronous machine under different operating conditions. The analysis is based on the properties of quadratic invariance in tensor calculus. An alternative solution by network analysis has also been provided to establish the validity of the tensor approach.

In order to improve the tracking and erosion performance of outdoor polymeric silicone rubber (SR) insulators used in HV power transmission lines, micron sized inorganic fillers are usually added to the base SR matrix. In addition, insulators used in high voltage dc transmission lines are designed to have increased creepage distance to mitigate the tracking and erosion problems. ASTM D2303 standard gives a procedure for finding the tracking and erosion resistance of outdoor polymeric insulator weathershed material samples under laboratory conditions for ac voltages. In this paper, inclined plane (IP) tracking and erosion tests similar to ASTM D2303 were conducted under both positive and negative dc voltages for silicone rubber samples filled with micron and nano sized particles to understand the phenomena occurring during such tests. Micron sized Alumina Trihydrate (ATH) and nano sized alumina fillers were added to silicone rubber matrix to improve the resistance to tracking and erosion. The leakage current during the tests and the eroded mass at the end of the tests were monitored. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy dispersive Xray (EDX) studies were conducted to understand the filler dispersion and the changes in surface morphology in both nanocomposite and microcomposite samples. The results suggest that nanocomposites performed better than microcomposites even for a small filler loading (4%) for both positive and negative dc stresses. It was also seen that the tracking and erosion performance of silicone rubber is better under negative dc as compared to positive dc voltage. EDX studies showed migration of different ions onto the surface of the sample during the IP test under positive dc which has led to an inferior performance as compared to the performance under negative dc.

We present here an improvisation of HNN (Panchal, Bhavesh et al., 2001) called RD 3D HNCAN for backbone (HN, CA and N-15) assignment in both folded and unfolded proteins. This is a reduced dimensionality experiment which employs CA chemical shifts to improve dispersion. Distinct positive and negative peak patterns of various triplet segments along the polypeptide chain observed in HNN are retained and these provide start and check points for the sequential walk. Because of co-incrementing of CA and N-15, peaks along one of the dimensions appear at sums and differences of the CA and N-15 chemical shifts. This changes the backbone assignment protocol slightly and we present this in explicit detail. The performance of the experiment has been demonstrated using Ubiquitin and Plasmodium falciparum P2 proteins. The experiment is particularly valuable when two neighboring amino acid residues have nearly identical backbone N-15 chemical shifts. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A detailed low temperature magneto-transport study is carried out to understand the transport mechanism in pure and Co doped ZnO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. A negative transverse magneto-resistance (MR) (with a value similar to 4% at 4.5 K) which decreases monotonically with the increase in temperature, is observed for the undoped ZnO film. A competition between positive and negative MR is observed for the Co doped ZnO samples. In this case at higher field values negative MR contribution dominates over the positive MR, which gives rise to a slope change in the MR data. Our data for MR shows excellent agreement with the semi-empirical formula given by Khosla et al., which is originally proposed for the degenerate semiconductors. This formula incorporates the third order perturbation expansion of the s-d exchange scattering of the conduction electrons from the localised spins. We have also obtained the Hall mobility, carrier conc. and mean free path as function of temperature for the pure ZnO film.

Quantum coherence can affect the thermodynamics of small quantum systems. Coherences have been shown to affect the power generated by a quantum heat engine (QHE) which is coupled to two thermal photon reservoirs and to an additional cavity mode. We show that the fluctuations of the heat exchanged between the QHE and the reservoirs strongly depend on quantum coherence, especially when the engine operates as a refrigerator, i.e., heat current flows from the cold bath to the hot bath. Intriguingly, we find that the ratio of positive and negative (with respect to the thermodynamic force) fluctuations in the heat current satisfies a universal coherence-independent fluctuation theorem.

In a communication system in which K nodes communicate with a central sink node, the following problem of selection often occurs. Each node maintains a preference number called a metric, which is not known to other nodes. The sink node must find the `best' node with the largest metric. The local nature of the metrics requires the selection process to be distributed. Further, the selection needs to be fast in order to increase the fraction of time available for data transmission using the selected node and to handle time-varying environments. While several selection schemes have been proposed in the literature, each has its own shortcomings. We propose a novel, distributed selection scheme that generalizes the best features of the timer scheme, which requires minimal feedback but does not guarantee successful selection, and the splitting scheme, which requires more feedback but guarantees successful selection. The proposed scheme introduces several new ideas into the design of the timer and splitting schemes. It explicitly accounts for feedback overheads and guarantees selection of the best node. We analyze and optimize the performance of the scheme and show that it is scalable, reliable, and fast. We also present new insights about the optimal timer scheme.

Diffusion couple experiments are conducted in Co-Ni-Pt system at 1200 degrees C and in Co-Ni-Fe system at 1150 degrees C, by coupling binary alloys with the third element. Uphill diffusion is observed for both Co and Ni in Pt rich corner of the Co-Ni-Pt system, whereas in the Co-Ni-Fe system, it is observed for Co. Main and cross interdiffusion coefficients are calculated at the composition of intersection of two independent diffusion profiles. In both the systems, the main interdiffusion coefficients are positive over the whole composition range and the cross interdiffusion coefficients show both positive and negative values at different regions. Hardness measured by performing the nanoindentations on diffusion couples of both the systems shows the higher values at intermediate compositions.

In this paper, a numerical investigation is performed to study the mixed convective flow and heat transfer characteristics past a square cylinder in cross flow at incidence. Utilizing air (Pr = 0.71) as an operating fluid, computations are carried out at a representative Reynolds number (Re) of 100. Angles of incidences are varied as, 0 degrees <= alpha <= 45 degrees. Effect of superimposed positive and negative cross-flow buoyancy is brought about by varying the Richardson number (RI) in the range -1.0 <= Ri <= 1.0. The detail features of flow topology and heat transport are analyzed critically for different angles of incidences. The thermo fluidic forces acting on the cylinder during mixed convection are captured in terms of the drag (C-D), lift (C-L), and moment (C-M) coefficients. The results show that the lateral width of the cylinder wake reduces with increasing alpha and the isotherms spread out far wide. In the range 0 degrees < alpha < 45 degrees, C-D reduces with increasing Ri. The functional dependence of C-M with Ri reveals a linear relationship. Thermal boundary layer thickness reduces with increasing angle of incidences. The global rate of heat transfer from the cylinder increases with increasing alpha. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sector is responsible for approximately 25% of anthropogenic GHG emissions mainly from deforestation and agricultural emissions from livestock, soil and nutrient management. Mitigation from the sector is thus extremely important in meeting emission reduction targets. The sector offers a variety of cost-competitive mitigation options with most analyses indicating a decline in emissions largely due to decreasing deforestation rates. Sustainability criteria are needed to guide development and implementation of AFOLU mitigation measures with particular focus on multifunctional systems that allow the delivery of multiple services from land. It is striking that almost all of the positive and negative impacts, opportunities and barriers are context specific, precluding generic statements about which AFOLU mitigation measures have the greatest promise at a global scale. This finding underlines the importance of considering each mitigation strategy on a case-by-case basis, systemic effects when implementing mitigation options on the national scale, and suggests that policies need to be flexible enough to allow such assessments. National and international agricultural and forest (climate) policies have the potential to alter the opportunity costs of specific land uses in ways that increase opportunities or barriers for attaining climate change mitigation goals. Policies governing practices in agriculture and in forest conservation and management need to account for both effective mitigation and adaptation and can help to orient practices in agriculture and in forestry towards global sharing of innovative technologies for the efficient use of land resources. Different policy instruments, especially economic incentives and regulatory approaches, are currently being applied however, for its successful implementation it is critical to understand how land-use decisions are made and how new social, political and economic forces in the future will influence this process.

Obsessive compulsive symptoms frequently occur in a substantial proportion of patients with schizophrenia. The term schizoobsessive has been proposed to delineate this subgroup of schizophrenia patients who present with obsessive compulsive symptoms/disorder. However, whether this co-occurrence is more than just co-morbidity and represents a distinct subgroup remains controversial. A striking variation is noted across studies examining prevalence of obsessive compulsive symptoms/disorder in schizophrenia patients and their impact on clinical profile of schizophrenia. Hence, in this study, we examined the prevalence of obsessive compulsive symptoms/disorder in a large sample of consecutively hospitalized schizophrenia patients and compared the clinical and functional characteristics of schizophrenia patients with and without obsessive compulsive symptoms/disorder. We evaluated 200 consecutive subjects with the DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I disorders, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale, Clinical Global Impression-Severity scale, Global Assessment of Functioning Scale, Family Interview for Genetic Studies and World Health Organization Quality of Life scale. The prevalence of obsessive compulsive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia was 24% (n = 48); 37 of them had obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and II had obsessive compulsive symptoms not amounting to a clinical diagnosis of OCD (OCS). Schizophrenia patients with OCS/OCD had an earlier age at onset of schizophrenia symptoms, lower positive symptoms score, higher co-morbidity with Axis II disorders, higher occurrence of OCD in family and better quality of life. Findings of the study indicate a higher prevalence of OCS/OCD in schizophrenia. Schizophrenia patients with and without OCS/OCD have comparable clinical profile with few exceptions. High rates of OCD in first degree relatives suggest possible genetic contributions and differences in neurobiology. Finally, evidence to consider schizoobsessive as a distinct diagnostic entity is inconclusive and warrants further studies. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
