Annealing dependence of the lattice parameter, resistivity, magnetoresistance and thermopower have been studied on Nd0.87Sr0.33MnO3 thin films deposited on LaAlO3 and alumina substrates by pulsed laser ablation. Upon annealing at 800 degrees C and 1000 degrees C the lattice constant of the LaAlO3 film tends toward that of the bulk target due to reduction in oxygen vacancies. This results in a metal-insulator transition at temperatures which increase with progressive annealing along with a decrease in the observed low temperature MR. Using a magnon scattering model we estimate the e(g) bandwidth of the film annealed at 1000 degrees C and show that the magnon contribution to the resistivity is suppressed in a highly oxygen deficient film and gains prominence only upon subsequent annealing. We also show that upon annealing, the polaron concentration and the spin cluster size increases in the paramagnetic phase, using an adiabatic polaron hopping model which takes into account an exchange dependent activation energy above the resistivity peak.

Cubic pyrochlore Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7 thin films were deposited by pulsed laser ablation on Pt(200)/SiO2/Si at 500, 550, 600, and 650 degrees C. The thin films with (222) preferred orientation were found to grow at 650 degrees C with better crystallinity which was established by the lowest full-width half maxima of similar to 0.38. The dielectric response of the thin films grown at 650 degrees C have been characterized within a temperature range of 270-650 K and a frequency window of 0.1-100 kHz. The dielectric dispersion in the thin films shows a Maxwell-Wagner type relaxation with two different kinds of response confirmed by temperature dependent Nyquist plots. The ac conduction of the films showed a varied behavior in two different frequency regions. The power law exponent values of more than 1 at high frequency are explained by a jump-relaxation-model. The possibility of grain boundary related large polaronic hopping, due to two different power law exponents and transformation of double to single response in Nyquist plots at high temperature, has been excluded. The ``attempt jump frequency'' obtained from temperature dependent tangent loss and real part of dielectric constants, has been found to lie in the range of their lattice vibronic frequencies (10(12)-10(13) Hz). The activation energy arising from a large polaronic hopping due to trapped charge at low frequency region has been calculated from the ac conduction behavior. The range of activation energies (0.26-0.59. eV) suggests that the polaronic hopping at low frequency is mostly due to oxygen vacancies. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.106311.3457335]

The present paper deals with the study of the effects of electron (8 MeV) irradiation on the dielectric and ferroelectric properties of PbZrO3 thin films grown by sol-gel technique. The films were (0.62 mu m thick) subjected to electron irradiation using Microtron accelerator (delivered dose 80, 100, 120 kGy). The films were well crystallized prior to and after electron irradiation. However, local amorphization was observed after irradiation. There is an appreciable change in the dielectric constant after irradiation with different delivered doses. The dielectric loss showed significant frequency dispersion for both unirradiated and electron irradiated films. T (c) was found to shift towards higher temperature with increasing delivered dose. The effect of radiation induced increase of E >'(T) is related to an internal bias field, which is caused by radiation induced charges trapped at grain boundaries. The double butterfly loop is retained even after electron irradiation to the different delivered doses. The broader hysteresis loop seems to be related to radiation induced charges causing an enhanced space charge polarization. Radiation-induced oxygen vacancies do not change the general shape of the AFE hysteresis loop but they increase P (s) of the hysteresis at the electric field forced AFE to FE phase transition. We attribute the changes in the dielectric properties to the structural defects such as oxygen vacancies and radiation induced charges. The shift in T (C), increase in dielectric constant, broader hysteresis loop, and increase in P (r) can be related to radiation induced charges causing space charge polarization. Double butterfly and hysteresis loops were retained indicative of AFE nature of the films.

Anion-deficient layered perovskite oxides of the formula, ACa2Nb3-xMxO10-x (A = Rb, Cs; M = Al, Fe) for 0 < x less-than-or-equal-to 1.0, possessing tetragonal structures similar to the parent ACa2Nb3O10, have been synthesized. The interlayer A cations in these materials are readily exchanged with protons in aqueous HNO3 to give the protonated derivatives, HCa2Nb3-xMxO10-x; the latter are solid Bronsted acids intercalating a number of organic amines including aniline (pK(a) = 4.63). The distribution of acid sites in the interlayer region of HCa2Nb2MO9 inferred from n-alkylamine intercalation suggests that oxygen vacancies and Nb/M atoms are disordered in the ACa2Nb2MO9 samples prepared at 1100-1200-degrees-C. Annealing a disordered sample of CsCa2Nb2AlO9 for a long time at lower temperatures tends to order the Nb/Al atoms and oxygen vacancies to produce octahedral (NbO6/2)-tetrahedral (AlO4/2)-octahedral (NbO6/2) layer sequence reminiscent of the brownmillerite structure.

Cu (0.1 mol%) doped ZnO nanopowders have been successfully synthesized by a wet chemical method at a relatively low temperature (300 degrees C). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements were used for characterization. PXRD results confirm that the nanopowders exhibit hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO without any secondary phase. The particle size of as-formed product has been calculated by Williamson-Hall (W-H) plots and Scherrer's formula is found to be in the range of similar to 40 nm. TEM image confirms the nano size crystalline nature of Cu doped ZnO. SEM micrographs of undoped and Cu doped ZnO show highly porous with large voids. UV-Vis spectrum showed a red shift in the absorption edge in Cu doped ZnO. PL spectra show prominent peaks corresponding to near band edge UV emission and defect related green emission in the visible region at room temperature and their possible mechanisms have been discussed. The EPR spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049, and two narrow resonances one at g similar to 1.990 and other at g similar to 1.950. The broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049 is a characteristic of Cu2+ ion whereas the signal at g similar to 1.990 and g similar to 1.950 can be attributed to ionized oxygen vacancies and shallow donors respectively. The spin concentration (N) and paramagnetic susceptibility (X) have been evaluated and discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of strontium-doped neodymium ferrite (Nd1-xSrxFeO3-delta where 0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.4) were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic perovskite structure. The lattice parameters were determined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction. The orthorhombic distortion decreases with increasing Sr substitution. The pseudocubic lattice parameter shows a minimum at x=0.3. The thermal expansion curves for x=0.2-0.4 displayed rapid increase in slope at higher temperatures. The electrical conductivity increased with Sr content and temperature. The calculated activation energies for electrical conduction decreased with increasing x. The electrical conductivity can be described by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The charge compensation for divalent ion on the A-site is provided by the formation of Fe4+ ions on the B site and vacancies on the oxygen sublattice. The results indicate two defect domains: for low values of x, the predominant defect is Fe4+ ions, whereas for higher values of x, oxygen vacancies dominate. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Transient analysis in Al-doped barium strontium titanate thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition
Resumo:
Thin films of (Ba0.5Sr0.5)TiO3 (BST) with different concentrations of Al doping were grown using a pulsed laser deposition technique. dc leakage properties were studied as a function of Al doping level and compared to that of undoped BST films. With an initial Al doping level of 0.1 at. % which substitutes Ti in the lattice site, the films showed a decrease in the leakage current, however, for 1 at. % Al doping level the leakage current was found to be relatively higher. Current time measurements at elevated temperatures on 1 at. % Al doped BST films revealed space-charge transient type characteristics. A complete analysis of the transient characteristics was carried out to identify the charge transport process through variation of applied electric field and ambient temperature. The result revealed a very low mobility process comparable to ionic motion, and was found responsible for the observed feature. Calculation from ionic diffusivity and charge transport revealed a conduction process associated with an activation energy of around 1 eV. The low mobility charge carriers were identified as oxygen vacancies in motion under the application of electric field. Thus a comprehensive understanding of the charge transport process in highly acceptor doped BST was developed and it was conclusive that the excess of oxygen vacancies created by intentional Al doping give rise to space-charge transient type characteristics. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

CaxCu3Ti4O12 (x=0.90, 0.97, 1.0, 1.1 and 1.15) polycrystalline powders with variation in calcium content were prepared via the oxalate precursor route. The structural, morphological and dielectric properties of the ceramics fabricated using these powders were studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope along with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and impedance analyzer. The X-ray diffraction patterns obtained for the x = 0.97, 1.0 and 1.1 powdered ceramics could be indexed to a body-centered cubic perovskite related structure associated with the space group Im3. The ESR studies confirmed the absence of oxygen vacancies in the ceramics that were prepared using the oxalate precursor route. The dielectric properties of these suggest that the calcium deficient sample (x = 0.97) has a reduced dielectric loss while retaining the high dielectric constant which is of significant industrial relevance. Oxygen nonstoichiometry of three ternary oxides. YFeO3-delta, YFe2O4-alpha and Y3Fe5O12-theta. in the system Y-Fe-O was investigated as a function of oxygen partial pressure by thermogravimetry at high temperature. The defects responsible for nonstoichiometry were identified as oxygen vacancies for YFeO3-delta and YFe2O4-alpha although the manner of variation of nonstoichiometric parameter with oxygen partial pressure for these two oxides is quite different. Cation interstitials are the predominant defects in Y3Fe5O12-theta. Gibbs energies of formation of the three nonstoichiometric oxides were determined using solid-state electrochemical cells in the temperature range from 975 to 1475 K. YFe2O4-alpha was found to be stable only above 1391 K. Gibbs energies of formation of the three stoichiometric compounds from their component binary oxides were obtained by combining information from solid state cells with results of thermogravimetric analysis using the Gibbs-Duhem relation. The results can be summarized as: (1/2)Y2O3 + (1/2)Fe2O3 -> YFeO3;Delta G(f(ox))(O)(+/- 250)(J/mol) = 17, 126-8.263T (1/2)Y2O3 + FeO + (1/2)Fe2O3 -> YFe2O4;Delta G(f(ox))(O)(+/- 260)(J/mol) = -10,352-13.24T (3/2)Y2O3 + (5/2)Fe2O3 -> Y3Fe5O12;Delta G(f(ox))(O)(+/- 780)(J/mol) = -56, 647-31.091T. Li+-doped Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphors have been studied as potential red phosphors for application to field emission displays. The Li+-doped and undoped Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphors were synthesized by low temperature solution combustion method. The enhanced luminescence was regarded as the result of the creation of oxygen vacancies due to the Gd3+ sites occupied by Li+ ions, the alteration of the crystal field surrounding the activator Eu3+ ions owing to the incorporation of Li+ into interstial sites. The result in a remarkable increase on photoluminescence and the strong emission was observed at 612 nm by a factor of 4.1 in comparison with that of undoped sample.

Mn- doped SrTiO3.0, when synthesized free of impurities, is a paramagnetic insulator with interesting dielectric properties. Since delocalized charge carriers are known to promote ferromagnetism in a large number of systems via diverse mechanisms, we have looked for the possibility of any intrinsic, spontaneous magnetization by simultaneous doping of Mn ions and electrons into SrTiO3 via oxygen vacancies, thereby forming SrTi1-xMnxO3-delta, to the extent of making the doped system metallic. We find an absence of any enhancement of the magnetization in the metallic sample when compared with a similarly prepared Mn doped, however, insulating sample. Our results, thus, are not in agreement with a recent observation of a weak ferromagnetism in metallic Mn doped SrTiO3 system.

The thermal oxidation process of the indium nitride (InN) nanorods (NRs) was studied. The SEM studies reveal that the cracked and burst mechanism for the formation of indium oxide (In2O3) nanostructures by oxidizing the InN NRs at higher temperatures. XRD results confirm the bcc crystal structure of the as prepared In2O3 nanostructures. Strong and broad photoluminescence spectrum located at the green to red region with maximum intensity at 566 nm along with a weak ultraviolet emission at 338 nm were observed due to oxygen vacancy levels and free excitonic transitions, respectively. The valence band onset energy of 2.1 eV was observed from the XPS valence band spectrum, clearly justifies the alignment of Fermi level to the donor level created due to the presence of oxygen vacancies which were observed in the PL spectrum. The elemental ratio In:O in as prepared In2O3 was found to be 42:58 which is in close agreement with the stoichiometric value of 40:60. A downward shift was observed in the Raman peak positions due to a possible phonon confinement effect in the nanoparticles formed in bursting mechanism. Such single junction devices exhibit promising photovoltaic performance with fill factor and conversion efficiency of 21% and 0.2%, respectively, under concentrated AM1.5 illumination.

Wafer/microcrystallites of oxidized Ge with holes/nanoholes synthesized by thermal oxidation strategy from Ge wafer/microcrystallites can convert one wavelength to another. Both oxidized Ge wafer and microcrystallites shows excitation- and power-dependent luminescence. Red-shift is observed as the excitation wavelength is increased, while blue-shift is observed as power density is increased. Over all, blue-green-yellow-orange luminescence is observed depending on the excitation wavelength and the morphology of oxidized Ge. The various defects level associated with germanium-oxygen vacancies in GeO2 and Ge/GeO2 interface are responsible for the excitation-dependent luminescence. Being a light-conversion material, oxidized Ge is expected to find potential applications in solid-state lighting, photovoltaic devices and photocatalysis.

A simple approach for obtaining room temperature ferroelectricity in ZnO rod structures at the nanoscale is reported. A systematic comparative study between two kinds of nanorods prepared by different processes reveals the physics behind it. It is observed that ZnO nanorods grown (in-situ) by a sol gel method on platinum substrate show ferroelectric behaviour. On the contrary, ZnO nanorods first grown by a sol gel method and then spin-coated on a platinum substrate (ex-situ) do not demonstrate this kind of feature. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms partially (002) and (100) plane oriented growth of both samples. From photoluminescence (PL) spectral analysis it is interpreted that oxygen vacancies/zinc interstitial defects, which arises from the large lattice mismatch between the Pt substrate and the ZnO nanorods grown thereon, and preferential ZnO growth along 002], can be causes of this type of phenomena. C-V characterization, P-E hysteresis loop along with piezoelectric force microscopy support this observation.

The effect of annealing on structural defects and d(0) ferromagnetism in SnO2 nanoparticles prepared by solution combustion method is investigated. The as-synthesized SnO2 nanoparticles were annealed at 400-800 degrees C for 2 h, in ambient conditions. The crystallinity, size, and morphology of the samples were studied using x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies. The annealing results in grain growth due to coarsening as well as reduction in oxygen vacancies as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All the as synthesized and annealed samples exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) with distinct hysteresis loops and the saturation magnetization as high as similar to 0.02 emu/g in as-synthesized samples. However, the saturation magnetization is drastically reduced with increasing annealing temperature. Further the presence of singly charged oxygen vacancies (V-o(-) signal at g-value 1.99) is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance studies, which also diminish with increasing annealing temperature. The observed diminishing RTFM and simultaneous evidences of diminishing O vacancies clearly indicate that RTFM is driven by defects in oxide lattice and confirms primary role of oxygen vacancies in inducing ferromagnetic ordering in metal oxide semiconductors. The study also provides improved fundamental understanding regarding the ambiguity in the origin of intrinsic RTFM in semiconducting metal oxides and projects their technological application in the field of spintronics.
