Magnetotransport measurements in pulsed fields up to 15 T have been performed on mercury cadmium telluride (Hg1-xCdxTe, x similar to 0.2) bulk as well as liquid phase epitaxially grown samples to obtain the resistivity and conductivity tensors in the temperature range 220-300 K. Mobilities and densities of various carriers participating in conduction have been extracted using both conventional multicarrier fitting (MCF) and mobility spectrum analysis. The fits to experimental data, particularly at the highest magnetic fields, were substantially improved when MCF is applied to minimize errors simultaneously on both resistivity and conductivity tensors. The semiclassical Boltzmann transport equation has been solved without using adjustable parameters by incorporating the following scattering mechanisms to fit the mobility: ionized impurity, polar and nonpolar optical phonons, acoustic deformation potential, and alloy disorder. Compared to previous estimates based on the relaxation time approximation with outscattering only, polar optical scattering and ionized impurity scattering limited mobilities are shown to be larger due to the correct incorporation of the inscattering term taking into account the overlap integrals in the valence band.

Aromatic aldehydes and aryl isocyanates do not react at room temperature. However, we have shown for the first time that in the presence of catalytic amounts of group(IV) n-butoxide, they undergo metathesis at room temperature to produce imines with the extrusion of carbon dioxide. The mechanism of action has been investigated by a study of stoichiometric reactions. The insertion of aryl isocyanates into the metal n-butoxide occurs very rapidly. Reaction of the insertion product with the aldehyde is responsible for the metathesis. Among the n-butoxides of group(IV) metals, Ti((OBu)-Bu-n)(4) (8aTi) was found to be more efficient than Zr((OBu)-Bu-n)(4) (8aZr) and Hf((OBu)-Bu-n)(4) (8aHf) in carrying out metathesis. The surprisingly large difference in the metathetic activity of these alkoxides has been probed computationally using model complexes Ti(OMe)(4) (8bTi), Zr(OMe)(4) (8bZr) and Hf(OMe)(4) (8bHf) at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of theory. These studies indicate that the insertion product formed by Zr and Hf are extremely stable compared to that formed by Ti. This makes subsequent reaction of Zr and Hf complexes unfavorable.

The room temperature (RT) tensile behaviour of a free-standing high activity Pt-aluminide bond coat has been evaluated by microtensile testing technique. The coating had a typical three-layer microstructure. The stress-strain plot for the free-standing coating was linear, indicating the coating to be brittle at RT. Different fracture features were observed across the coating layers, namely quasi-cleavage in the outer layer and inner interdiffusion zone, and cleavage in the intermediate layer. By employing interrupted tensile test and observing the cross-sectional microstructure of the tested specimens, it was determined that failure of the microtensile samples occurred by the initiation of a single crack in the intermediate layer of the coating and its subsequent inside-out propagation. Such a mechanism of failure has been explained in terms of the fracture features observed across the sample thickness. This mechanism of failure is consistent with fracture toughness values of the individual coating layers. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the synthesis and properties of sphere-shaped microscale aggregates of bismuth telluride nanoplates. We obtain porous microspheres by reducing bismuth chloride and orthotelluric acid with hydrazine in the presence of thioglycolic acid-which serves as the shape-and size-directing agent-followed by room-temperature aging-which promotes nanoplate aggregation. Thin film assemblies of the nanoplate microspheres exhibit n-type behavior due to sulfur doping and a Seebeck coefficient higher than that reported for assemblies of chalcogenide nanostructures. Adaptation of our scalable approach to synthesize and hierarchically assemble nanostructures with controlled doping could be attractive for tailoring novel thermoelectric materials for applications in high-efficiency refrigeration and harvesting electricity from heat.

Room temperature, magnesium ion-conducting molten electrolytes are prepared using a combination of acetamide, urea and magnesium triflate or magnesium perchlorate. The molten liquids show high ionic conductivity, of the order of mS cm(-1) at 298 K. Vibrational spectroscopic studies based on triflate/perchlorate bands reveal that the free ion concentration is higher than that of ion-pairs and aggregates in the melt. Electrochemical reversibility of magnesium deposition and dissolution is demonstrated using cyclic voltammetry and impedance studies. The transport number of Mg2+ ion determined by means of a combination of d.c. and ac. techniques is similar to 0.40. Preliminary studies on the battery characteristics reveal good capacity for the magnesium rechargeable cell and open up the possibility of using this unique class of acetamide-based room temperature molten electrolytes in secondary magnesium batteries. ZnO nanostructures were deposited on flexible polymer sheet and cotton fabrics at room temperature by activated reactive evaporation. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectrum of ZnO nanostructured film exhibited a week intrinsic UV emission and a strong broad yellow-orange visible emission. TEM and HRTEM studies show that the grown nanostructures are crystalline in nature and their growth direction was indentified to be along [002]. ZnO nanostructures grown on the copper-coated flexible polymer sheets exhibited stable field-emissio characteristics with a threshold voltage of 2.74 V/mu m (250 mu A) and a very large field enhancement factor (beta) of 23,213. Cotton fabric coated with ZnO nanostructures show an excellent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (Gram positive), and similar to 73% reduction in the bacterial population is achieved compared to uncoated fabrics after 4 h in viability. Using a shadow mask technique, we also selectively deposited the nanostructures at room temperature on polymer substrates.

In this paper, we demonstrate a way to impart severe plastic deformation to magnesium at room temperature to produce ultrafine grain size of similar to 250 nm through equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE). The strategy to deform magnesium at lower temperature or to achieve such grain sizes has been proposed as: (i) to obtain a suitable initial orientation with high Schmid factor for basal slip and low Schmid factor for pyramidal/prismatic slip; (ii) to take advantage of low stacking fault energy of basal and high stacking fault energies of prismatic/pyramidal planes in order to relatively work-harden the basal plane with respect to the pyramidal/prismatic plane; and (iii) to lower the temperature of deformation in steps, leading to continual refinement of grains, resulting in finer grain size. The experimental as well as simulated texture of ECAE-processed samples indicate that the deformation mechanism leading to ultrafine grain size is slip-dominated. The recrystallization mechanism during ECAE has been found to be orientation-dependent. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A two-stage pulse tube cryocooler (PTC) which produces a no-load temperature of similar to 2.5 K in its second stage at an operating frequency of 1.6 Hz has been designed and fabricated. The second stage of the system provides a refrigeration power of similar to 250 mW at 5.0 K. The system uses stainless steel meshes (mesh size 200) along with lead (Pb) granules and combinations of Pb, Er3Ni, and HoCu2 as the first and second stage regenerator materials, respectively. Experimental studies have been carried out on different pulse tube configurations by varying the dimensions of the pulse tubes and regenerators to arrive at the best one, which leads to the lowest no-load second stage cold head temperature. Using this configuration, detailed experimental studies have been conducted by varying the volume percentage ratios of the second stage regenerator materials such as HoCu2, Er3Ni, and Pb (with an average grain size of similar to 250 mu m). This article presents the results of our experimental studies on cryocoolers with the regenerator material arranged in layered structures. Comparative studies have also been presented for specific cases where the regenerator materials are arranged as a homogeneous mixture in the second stage. The experimental results clearly indicate that the design of PTCs should use only layered structures of regenerator materials and not homogenous mixtures.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions. ZnO (core)/graphitic (shell) nanowires were successfully fabricated by a one-step method. Morphology of the as-grown nanowires was studied in detail by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS). High resolution TEM micrographs and selected area electron diffraction patterns reveal the core/shell morphology of the nanowires that grew along the c-axis of ZnO. EDS study of the nanowires confirms that there are no impurities within the detectable limit. Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer measurements show room temperature ferromagnetic ordering in these core/shell nanowires. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Telluric Acid Ammonium Phosphate (Te(OH)62(NH4)H2PO4(NH4)2HPO4) reffered to as TAAP is a recently discovered class m ferroelectric.1 It undergoes FE-PE transition at 48°C. Switching studies in this crystal has been carried out in the temperature range -14°C to 39°C by applying fields up to 4 kV/cm. Measurements were carried out on (101) plates cut from the crystals grown from solution. X-ray irradiation was carried out at room temperature by means of an x-ray tube operating at 25 kV and 15 mA with copper target. Air drying silver paste was used as electrodes. Samples were checked for hysteresis loop using a modified Sawyer-Tower circuit. The Ps value obtained from the loop is 2.1 μC/cm2 which is comparable to the earlier reported value. It was however noticed that the loop was slightly shifted to right with respect to the origin indicating the presence of a small internal bias which was 100 V/cm in the virgin crystal. This bias could not be removed even after repeated crystallization. On irradiation the internal biasing field increased which was indicated by a further shift of the hysteresis loop. The bias seems to saturate at about 750 V/cm for which the crystal had to be irradiated for about 3 hours.

Room-temperature sensing characteristics for H-2, ethanol, NH3, H2S and water have been investigated with thick-film sensors based on GaN nanoparticles, prepared by a simple chemical route. In general, GaN nanoparticles exhibit satisfactory sensor properties for these gases and vapors even at room temperature. The sensitivity for ethanol is found to be highest, the sensitivity and recovery times being smallest. Gas sensor properties of GaN seem to be related to intrinsic defects, which act as sorption sites for the gas molecules. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
