In this paper we address the problem of transmission of correlated sources over a fading multiple access channel (MAC). We provide sufficient conditions for transmission with given distortions. Next these conditions are specialized to a Gaussian MAC (GMAC). Transmission schemes for discrete and Gaussian sources over a fading GMAC are considered. Various power allocation strategies are also compared.

The rapid data acquisition, natural fluorescence rejection and experimental ease are the advantages of the ultra-fast Raman loss scattering (URLS) which makes it a unique and valuable molecular structure-determining technique. URLS is an analogue of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) but far more sensitive than SRS. It involves the interaction of two laser sources, viz. a picosecond (ps) pulse and white light, with the sample leading to the generation of loss signal on the higher energy (blue) side with respect to the wavelength of the ps pulse, unlike the gain signal observed on the red side in SRS. These loss signals are at least 1.5 times more intense than the SRS signals. Also, the very prerequisite of the experimental protocol for signal detection to be on the higher energy side by design eliminates the interference from fluorescence, which always appears on the red side. Unlike coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering, URLS signals are not precluded by non-resonant background under resonance condition and also being a self-phase matched process, it is experimentally easier.

This paper reviews the earlier experimental studies on light scattering in quartz near its phase transition, which ultimately laid the foundation for the basic concept of the soft mode. The theoretical work on the subject has been briefly referred to. A list of ferroelectrics in which soft mode studies have been carried out near TC using laser Raman spectroscopy is appended. Reference has also been made to the appearance of the central mode with abnormal increase in intensity at TC.

A thermodynamic analysis is presented for the two stage thermal compression process for an adsorption refrigeration cycle with HFC-134a as the working fluid and activated carbon as the adsorbent. Three specimens of varying achievable packing densities were evaluated. The influence of evaporating, condensing/adsorption and desorption temperatures was assessed through three performance indicators, namely, the uptake efficiency, the coefficient of performance and the exergetic efficiency. Conditions under which a two stage thermal compression process performs better than the single stage unit are identified. It is concluded that two stage thermal compression will be a viable proposition when the heat source temperature is low or when adsorption characteristics are weak or when adequate packing densities are difficult to realize. Sea-finding behavior in sea turtle hatchlings is modified by the visual cues provided by artificial beach front lighting. The consequent landward movement of hatchlings in response to coastal electric lighting reduces their survival rates. We assessed the potential impact of coastal lighting at Rushikulya, an important mass nesting site of the olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) in the Indian Ocean region. We examined the response of hatchlings to light characteristics in an experimental setup, as well as to the existing lighting regimes along the beach, using arena trials. Previous studies on other species indicate preferential orientation towards low wavelength and high intensity light. Our study confirms these preferences among hatchlings from the Indian Ocean population of olive ridleys. In addition we also found that wavelength and intensity could have an interactive effect upon hatchling orientation. Hatchlings at the study site respond both to visible point sources of light and to sheer glows of light. Though beach plantations of introduced Casuarina equisetifolia are generally considered to have negative impacts on sea turtle nesting beaches, we found that they acted as an effective light barrier when planted about 50 m away from the high tide line. We developed a model of the expected impact of artificial lighting on hatchling orientation during mass hatching events of previous years, and predict as much as 50% misorientation in some years. We also developed a map representing the misorientation of hatchlings due to artificial lighting based on arena trials in different regions of the beach. The results of the study helped identify focal areas for light management on the beach, which could be critical for the survival of this population.

The specific activity of glutamine synthetase (L-glutamate: ammonia ligase, EC 6.3.1.2) in surface grown Aspergillus niger was increased 3-5 fold when grown on L-glutamate or potassium nitrate, compared to the activity obtained on ammonium chloride. The levels of glutamine synthetase was regulated by the availability of nitrogen source like NH4 + , and further, the enzyme is repressed by increasing concentrations of NH4 +. In contrast to other micro-organisms, the Aspergillus niger enzyme was neither specifically inactivated by NH4+ or L-glutamine nor regulated by covalent modification.Glutamine synthetase from Aspergillus niger was purified to homogenity. The native enzyme is octameric with a molecular weight of 385,000±25,000. The enzyme also catalyses Mn2+ or Mg2+-dependent synthetase and Mn2+-dependent transferase activity.Aspergillus niger glutamine synthetase was completely inactivated by two mol of phenylglyoxal and one mol of N-ethylmaleimide with second order rate constants of 3·8 M–1 min–1 and 760 M–1 min–1 respectively. Ligands like Mg. ATP, Mg. ADP, Mg. AMP, L-glutamate NH4+, Mn2+ protected the enzyme against inactivation. The pattern of inactivation and protection afforded by different ligands against N-ethylamaleimide and phenylglyoxal was remarkably similar. These results suggest that metal ATP complex acts as a substrate and interacts with an arginine ressidue at the active site. Further, the metal ion and the free nucleotide probably interact at other sites on the enzyme affecting the catalytic activity.

The improvement terms in the generalised energy-momentum tensor of Callan, Coleman and Jackiw can be derived from a variational principle if the Lagrangian is generalised to describe coupling between ‘matter’ fields and a spin-2 boson field. The required Lorentz-invariant theory is a linearised version of Kibble-Sciama theory with an additional (generally-covariant) coupling term in the Lagrangian. The improved energy-momentum tensor appears as the source of the spin-2 field, if terms of second order in the coupling constant are neglected.

The blue emission of polyfluorene (PF)-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is known to degrade due to a low-energy green emission, which hitherto has been attributed to oxidative defects. By studying the electroluminescence (EL) from ethyl-hexyl substituted PF LEDs in the presence of oxygen and in an inert atmosphere, and by using trace quantities of paramagnetic impurities (PM) in the polymer, we show that the triplet states play a major role in the low-energy emission mechanism. Our time-dependent many-body studies show a large cross-section for the triplet formation in the EL process in the presence of PM, primarily due to electron-hole recombination processes.

In many instances we find it advantageous to display a quantum optical density matrix as a generalized statistical ensemble of coherent wave fields. The weight functions involved in these constructions turn out to belong to a family of distributions, not always smooth functions. In this paper we investigate this question anew and show how it is related to the problem of expanding an arbitrary state in terms of an overcomplete subfamily of the overcomplete set of coherent states. This provides a relatively transparent derivation of the optical equivalence theorem. An interesting by-product is the discovery of a new class of discrete diagonal representations.

Relative abundance distributions of multiply-charged ionic species have been measured for the RF spark and vacuum vibrator are ion sources, for a number of elements. An attempt has been made to explain the observed charge state distribution on the basis of models for the arc and spark plasma. The difficulties in the way of explaining the observed charge state distributions, using the LTE model with Saha distribution as well as the corona model, are pointed out. The distribution can be explained by a diffusion-dominated plasma model with known or calculated values for ionization cross-sections, the single impact model being suitable for the RF spark and the multiple impact model for the vibrator arc.

A one-step synthesis of Ga2O3 nanorods by heating molten gallium in ambient air at high temperatures is presented. The high-temperature synthesis creates oxygen vacancies and incorporates nitrogen from the environment. The oxygen vacancy in Ga2O3 is responsible for the emission in the blue-green region, while nitrogen in Ga2O3 is responsible for red emission.

We have determined relative levels of chloroplast leucine and tyrosine isoaccepting tRNAs and modified nucleotide contents from total tRNAs isolated from dark-grown, light-grown, N6-isopentenyladenine (i6A)-treated dark-grown and i6A-treated light-grown cucumber seedlings. Significant increases in the relative amounts of tRNA(Leu)2 and tRNA(Leu)3 were observed in the i6A-treated dark-grown seedlings compared to dark-grown, light-grown and i6A-treated light-grown seedlings. On the other hand, i6A-treated light-grown seedlings tRNA(Tyr)1 increased to 85% of total tRNAs(Tyr) from about 9% in light-grown seedlings and tRNA(Tyr)2 decreased to 15% compared with 91% in light-grown seedlings. Analysis of modified nucleotide of total tRNAs indicated that pT, pI, pm1A, pm5C, pGm, pm1G, pm2G and pm7G contents were significantly higher in the total tRNA of i6A-treated dark-grown seedlings than those from untreated dark-grown seedlings. Illumination of 8-day-old dark-grown seedlings for 12 h increased the contents of pT, pI, pGm and pm1G when compared to 8-day-old dark-grown seedlings with extended growth for 12 h in dark. On the contrary, i6A had no stimulatory effect in the contents of modified nucleotide in the light-grown seedlings.

We study the energetics of the accretion-induced outflow and then plausible jet around black holes/compact objects using a newly developed disc-outflow coupled model. Inter-connecting dynamics of outflow and accretion essentially upholds the conservation laws. The energetics depend strongly on the viscosity parameter α and the cooling factor f which exhibit several interesting features. The bolometric luminosities of ultra-luminous X-ray binaries (e.g. SS433) and family of highly luminous AGNs and quasars can be reproduced by the model under the super-Eddington accretion flows. Under appropriate conditions, low-luminous AGNs (e.g. Sagittarius A*) also fit reasonably well with the luminosity corresponding to a sub-Eddington accretion flow with f→1.

The light and heat induced changes in the optical band gap of Sb/As2S3 nanomultilayered chalcogenide film has been studied. Even though the changes in optical bandgap are attributed to the light and heat induced interdiffusion, the diffusional intermixing between the layers is rather different with light and heat. The observed difference in the light and heat induced interdiffusion is due to unequal diffusion coefficients of light and heat predicted by thermal spike model.
