Marked ball grinding tests were carried out in the laboratory using high carbon low alloy steel (cast and forged) and high chrome cast iron balls. Relative ball wear as a function of grinding period and milling conditions was evaluated for the different type of ball materials in the grinding of lead-zinc sulphide and phosphate ores. Results indicated that ball wear increased with time and showed a sharp increase for wet grinding over dry grinding. Ball wear under wet grinding conditions was also influenced by the gaseous atmosphere in the mill. The influence of oxygen on the corrosive wear of grinding balls was increasingly felt in case of sulphide ore grinding. The grinding ball materials could be arranged in the following order with respect to their overall wear resistance:

The combined milling at cryogenic temperature as well as room temperature (RT) has been carried out to prepare ultrafine NaCl crystallites. The milling has been done in evacuated tungsten carbide vials backfilled with high-purity Ar. The results indicate the effect duration of cryomilling prior to RT milling has a strong effect on the final crystallite size. The deformation aided sintering of NaCl crystallites during RT milling and leads to the formation of bimodal distribution of crystallites. The cuboidal-shaped NaCl crystallite undergoes a roughening transition due to plastic deformation. The experimental results are explained using the temperature-dependent mechanical properties of NaCl single crystals and plastic-deformation-induced roughening.

The development of microstructure in 316L stainless steel during industrial hot forming operations including press forging (strain rate of 0 . 15 s(-1)), rolling/extrusion (strain rate of 2-8 . 8 s(-1)), and hammer forging (strain rate of 100 s(-1)) at different temperatures in the range 600-1200 degrees C was studied with a view to validating the predictions of the processing map. The results showed that good col relation existed between the regimes indicated in the map and the product microstructures. The 316L stainless steel exhibited unstable flow in the form of flow localisation when hammer forged at temperatures above 900 degrees C, rolled below 1000 degrees C, or press forged below 900 degrees C. All these conditions must therefore be avoided in mechanical processing of the material. Conversely, in order to obtain defect free microstructures, ideally the material should be rolled at temperatures above 1100 degrees C, press forged at temperatures above 1000 degrees C, or hammer forged in the temperature range 600-900 degrees C. Wear of high carbon low alloy (HCLA) cast steel balls during the grinding of a chalcopyrite ore was evaluated under different experimental conditions. The role of oxygen in enhancing ball wear during wet finding is brought out. The influence of pH on ball wear was also examined from the view point of acid production during grinding and reactivity of sulphides. Contributions from corrosion and abrasion towards ball wear are quantified in terms of ball wear rates as a function of time, particle size and gaseous atmosphere in the mill.

The processing maps are being developed for use in optimising hot workability and controlling the microstructure of the product. The present investigation deals with the examination to assess the prediction of the processing maps for a 15Cr-15Ni-2.2Mo-0.3Ti austenitic stainless steel using forging and rolling tests at different temperatures in the range of 600-1200 degreesC. The tensile properties of these deformed products were evaluated at room temperature. The influence of the processing conditions, i.e. strain rate and temperature on the tensile properties of the deformed product were analysed to identify the optimum processing parameters. The results have shown good agreement between the regimes exhibited by the map and the properties of the rolled or forged product. The optimum parameters for processing of this steel were identified as rolling or press forging at temperatures above 1050 degreesC to obtain optimum product properties. The effect of strain path change during rolling has been investigated for copper and nickel using X-ray diffraction and electron back scatter diffraction as well as crystal plasticity simulations. Four different strain paths namely: (i) unidirectional rolling; (ii) reverse rolling; (iii) two-step cross rolling and (iv) multi-step cross rolling were employed to decipher the effect of strain path change on the evolution of deformation texture and microstructure. The cross rolled samples showed weaker texture with a prominent Bs {1 1 0}< 1 1 2 > and P(B(ND)) {1 1 0}< 1 1 1 > component in contrast to the unidirectional and reverse rolled samples where strong S {1 2 3}< 6 3 4 > and Cu {1 1 2}< 1 1 1 > components were formed. This was more pronounced for copper samples compared to nickel. The cross rolled samples were characterized by lower anisotropy and Taylor factor as well as less variation in Lankford parameter. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulations indicated that slip activity on higher number of octahedral slip systems can explain the weaker texture as well as reduced anisotropy in the cross rolled samples. In this present paper, the effects of non-isothermal rolling temperature and reduction in thickness followed by annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties of ZM21 magnesium alloy were investigated. The alloy rolled at four different temperatures 250 degrees C, 300 degrees C, 350 degrees C and 400 degrees C with reductions of 25%, 50% and 75%. Non-isothermal rolling resulted in grain refinement, introduction of shear bands and twins in the matrix alloy. Partial to full recrystallization was observed when the rolling temperature was above recrystallization temperature. Rolling and subsequent annealing resulted in strain-free equiaxed grains and complete disappearance of shear bands and twins. Maximum ultimate strength (345 MPa) with good ductility (14%) observed in the sample rolled at 250 degrees C with 75% reduction in thickness followed by short annealing. Recrystallization during warm/hot rolling was sluggish, but post-roll treatment gives distinct views about dynamic and static recrystallization. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present investigation reports the preparation and microstructural characterization of ultrafine CsCl crystallites using combined cryogenic and room temperature (RT) mechanical milling. The milling has been performed in evacuated WC vials under high purity argon atmosphere. The low temperature milling has been utilized as an effective means of rapid fracturing of the CsCl crystallites. This was followed by RT milling for different time durations. The final crystallite size obtained is 10 +/- 6 nm for sample cryo-milled for 11 h and subsequently RT milled for 35 h. The experimental findings indicate the strong effect of duration of cryo-milling on the final size of the crystallites. The prolonged room temperature milling leads to increase of the crystallite size due to deformation-induced sintering. The results have been discussed in the light of currently available literature. In the present study, asymmetric rolling was carried out for incorporating a shear component during the rolling at different temperatures, and was compared with conventional (symmetric) rolling. The microstructures were investigated using electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). The strain incorporated was compared with the help of grain orientation spread (GOS). GOS was eventually used as a criterion to partition the microstructure for separating the deformed and the dynamically recrystallized (DRX) grains. The texture of the partitioned DRX grains was shifted by similar to 30 degrees along the c-axis from the deformed grains. The mechanism of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) has been identified as continuous dynamic recovery and recrystallization (CDRR). The partitioned deformed grains for the higher temperature rolled specimens exhibited a texture similar to the room temperature rolled specimen. The asymmetric rolling introduces a shear component which shifts the texture fibre by similar to 5-10 degrees from the conventional rolling texture. This led to an increase in ductility with little compromise on strength. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A steel ball was slid on a steel flat lubricated by molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) particles suspended in hexadecane oil at 150 degrees C. The friction data is compared with that obtained when the ball was slid on the flat sprayed apriori with nominally dry MoS2 particles. The friction in the dry experiment was found to increase with temperature while the friction in wet condition was found to decrease with increasing temperature. Micro-Raman and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy are used to explore the roles of environmental moisture and chemical degradation of oil on the formation of antifriction film on the steel substrate.

Multi-layered materials have been made from Cu-Fe with approximately equal volume fractions using the Accumulated Roll Bonding (ARB) technique with less than 1 μm thickness of the individual layers. The so-obtained multi-layers have been subjected to deformation by cold rolling to 25, 50, 75, 87 and 93% reduction in thickness. A detailed characterization has been carried out using X-ray diffraction (line profile analysis and texture measurement) and electron (scanning and transmission) microscopy. It has been found that Fe layers are disintegrated whereas Cu retains its continuity within a layer. Microstructural Characterization from X-Ray Line profile Analysis (XRDLPA) through Variance Method reveals that large amount of strain is initially carried by Cu layers during deformation. In the Cu-Fe layer, the texture is comparatively weaker in Cu layer and strong in Fe layers. Brass Component increases up to 75% reduction and then decreases, while the ratio of Cu/S and Bs/S remains almost constant through out the deformation. After 50% reduction, dynamic recovery is predominant as indicated by the increase in the amount of low angle grain boundaries and decrease in dislocation density. The presence of R component indicates continuous dynamic recovery and recrystallization (CDRR) at the advanced stage of deformation.

This paper reports for the first time synthesis of free standing nano-crystalline copper crystals of a similar to 30-40 nm by ball milling of copper powder at 150 K under Argon atmosphere in a specially designed cryomill. The detailed characterization of these particles using multiple techniques that includes transmission electron microscopy confirms our conclusion. Careful analysis of the chemistry of these particles indicates that these particles are essentially contamination free. Through the analysis of existing models of grain size refinements during ball milling and low temperature deformation, we argue that the suppression of thermal processes and low temperature leads to formation of free nanoparticles as the process of fracture dominates over possible cold welding at low temperatures. The evolution of microstructure and texture in commercially pure titanium has been studied as a function of strain path during rolling using experimental techniques and viscoplastic self-consistent simulations. Four different strain paths, namely unidirectional rolling, two-step cross rolling, multistep cross rolling, and reverse rolling, have been employed to decipher the effect of strain path change on the evolution of deformation texture and microstructure. The cross-rolled samples show higher hardness with lower microstrain and intragranular misorientation compared to the unidirectional rolled sample as determined from X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction, respectively. The higher hardness of the cross-rolled samples is attributed to orientation hardening due to the near basal texture. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulations are able to successfully predict the texture evolution of the differently rolled samples. Simulation results indicate the higher contribution of basal slip in the formation of near basal texture and as well as lower intragranular misorientation in the cross-rolled samples.
