The recently introduced generalized pencil of Sudarshan which gives an exact ray picture of wave optics is analysed in some situations of interest to wave optics. A relationship between ray dispersion and statistical inhomogeneity of the field is obtained. A paraxial approximation which preserves the rectilinear propagation character of the generalized pencils is presented. Under this approximation the pencils can be computed directly from the field conditions on a plane, without the necessity to compute the cross-spectral density function in the entire space as an intermediate quantity. The paraxial results are illustrated with examples. The pencils are shown to exhibit an interesting scaling behaviour in the far-zone. This scaling leads to a natural generalization of the Fraunhofer range criterion and of the classical van Cittert-Zernike theorem to planar sources of arbitrary state of coherence. The recently derived results of radiometry with partially coherent sources are shown to be simple consequences of this scaling.

The dispersion characteristics of the dominant and higher order modes in unilateral firdines on uniaxially anisotropic substrates have been obtained. The solution has been obtained by applying the equivalent transmission-line concept in the spectral domain and by using Galerkhr’s method. Numericaf results for the propagation constant as a function of the slot-width ratio and freqnency are presented.

Coalescence between two droplets in a turbulent liquid-liquid dispersion is generally viewed as a consequence of forces exerted on the drop-pair squeezing out the intervening continuous phase to a critical thickness. A new synthesis is proposed herein which models the film drainage as a stochastic process driven by a suitably idealized random process for the fluctuating force. While the true test of the model lies in detailed parameter estimations with measurement of drop-size distributions in coalescing dispersions, experimental measurements on average coalescence frequencies lend preliminary support to the model.

We have probed the size dependency of the first hyperpolarizability (b) of copper nanoparticles by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS). Our results indicate that second harmonic generation (SHG) originates predominantly at the surface of the nanoparticles as long as the size (d) remains small compared to the wavelength (k). However, volume contribution to the SH response due to the retardation effect becomes important when particle size grows beyond the `small particle limit'. There is a significant dispersion in the b values of copper nanoparticles owing tothe presence of the strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band.

The coalescence of nearly rigid liquid droplets in a turbulent flow field is viewed as the drainage of a thin film of liquid under the action of a stochastic force representing the effect of turbulence. The force squeezing the drop pair is modelled as a correlated random function of time. The drops are assumed to coalesce once the film thickness becomes smaller than a critical thickness while they are regarded as separated if their distance of separation is larger than a prescribed distance. A semi-analytical solution is derived to determine the coalescence efficiency. The veracity of the solution procedure is established via a Monte-Carlo solution scheme. The model predicts a reversing trend of the dependence of the coalescence efficiency on the drop radii, the film liquid viscosity and the turbulence energy dissipation per unit mass, as the relative fluctuation increases. However, the dependence on physical parameters is weak (especially at high relative fluctuation) so that for the smallest droplets (which are nearly rigid) the coalescence efficiency may be treated as an empirical constant. The predictions of this model are compared with those of a white-noise force model. The results of this paper and those in Muralidhar and Ramkrishna (1986, Ind. Engng Chem. Fundam. 25, 554-56) suggest that dynamic drop deformation is the key factor that influences the coalescence efficiency.

A model has been developed to predict heat transfer rates and sizes of bubbles generated during nucleate pool boiling. This model assumes conduction and a natural convective heat transfer mechanism through the liquid layer under the bubble and transient conduction from the bulk liquid. The temperature of the bulk liquid in the vicinity of the bubble is obtained by assuming a turbulent natural convection process from the hot plate to the liquid bulk. The shape of the bubble is obtained by equilibrium analysis. The bubble departure condition is predicted by a force balance equation. Good agreement has been found between the bubble radii predicted by the present theory and the ones obtained experimentally.

Rate constants for the quenching of singlet oxygen by a series of thioketones were measured by monitoring the inhibition of the self-sensitized photooxidation of rubrene. A correlation of the quenching rate with the nature of the substituents on the aromatic rings for the diarylthioketones and arylalkylthioketones was found, whereas correlation with the n orbital ionization potential was observed for the dialkylthioketones.

Diluents (either low molecular weight compounds orother polymers) are known to modify the morphology, the rates of nucleation and growth of polymers 1- 4. Recentlybinary systems in which both the components crystallize simultaneously to give a eutectic solid have been studied with great interest. Carbonnei et al.

The analysis of the dispersion equation for surface magnetoplasmons in the Faraday configuration for the degenerate case of decaying constants being equal is given from the point of view of understanding the non-existence of the “degenerate modes”. This analysis also shows that there exist well defined “degenerate points” on the dispersion curve with electromagnetic fields varying linearly over small distances taken away from the interface.

The stress-optic coefficient (n3/2)(q11-q12) has been determined for a series of 18 optical glasses of different compositions in the wavelength range 5700-3200 Å. The coefficients are negative for all the glasses except for a high-lead-content glass of density 6·7 and refractive index 1·89. The numerical value of the coefficient decreases as one proceeds to the ultraviolet. This behaviour is just the opposite of what is observed in fused silica. By applying Mueller's theory, the strain polarizability constant and its dispersion have been evaluated.

Doss and Agarwal 1 discovered the "redoxokinetic effect" which is now familiarly known as faradaic rectification. Subsequently, the theory and applications of faradaic rectification due to a single electrode reaction have been developed by several workers 2-5. The theory and application of faradaic rectification in the case of a corrosion cell sustaining mixed electrode reactions on a corroding metal was reported recently 6"7. This led to the development of a new electrochemical method of corrosion rate determination. It was shown that changes in the instantaneous corrosion rates of a metal are readily evaluated by faradaic rectification measurements at the corrosion potential of the metal in a given medium. The aim of the present work is to show that absolute values of instantaneous corrosion rates may also be obtained by the new method under certain conditions. The practical advantages that arise from this development are pointed out.
An asymptotic analysis for the coupled dispersion characteristics of a structural acoustic waveguide
Resumo:
Analytical expressions are derived, using asymptotics, for the fluid-structure coupled wavenumbers in a one-dimensional (1-D) structural acoustic waveguide. The coupled dispersion equation of the system is rewritten in the form of the uncoupled dispersion equation with an added term due to the fluid-structure coupling. As a result of this coupling, the prior uncoupled structural and acoustic wavenumbers, now become coupled structural and acoustic wavenumbers. A fluid-loading parameter e, defined as the ratio of mass of fluid to mass of the structure per unit area, is introduced which when set to zero yields the uncoupled dispersion equation. The coupled wavenumber is then expressed in terms of an asymptotic series in e. Analytical expressions are found as e is varied from small to large values. Different asymptotic expansions are used for different frequency ranges with continuous transitions occurring between them. This systematic derivation helps to continuously track the wavenumber solutions as the fluid-loading parameter is varied from small to large values. Though the asymptotic expansion used is limited to the first-order correction factor, the results are close to the numerical results. A general trend is that a given wavenumber branch transits from a rigid-walled solution to a pressure-release solution with increasing E. Also, it is found that at any frequency where two wavenumbers intersect in the uncoupled analysis, there is no more an-intersection in the coupled case, but a gap is created at that frequency. In this paper, we present an analysis for the bit error rate (BER) performance of space-time block codes (STBC) from generalized complex orthogonal designs for M-PSK modulation. In STBCs from complex orthogonal designs (COD), the norms of the column vectors are the same (e.g., Alamouti code). However, in generalized COD (GCOD), the norms of the column vectors may not necessarily be the same (e.g., the rate-3/5 and rate-7/11 codes by Su and Xia in [1]). STBCs from GCOD are of interest because of the high rates that they can achieve (in [2], it has been shown that the maximum achievable rate for STBCs from GCOD is bounded by 4/5). While the BER performance of STBCs: from COD (e.g., Alamouti code) can be simply obtained from existing analytical expressions for receive diversity with the same diversity order by appropriately scaling the SNR, this can not be done for STBCs from GCOD (because of the unequal norms of the column vectors). Our contribution in this paper is that we derive analytical expressions for the BER performance of any STBC from GCOD. Our BER analysis for the GCOD captures the performance of STBCs from COD as special cases. We validate our results with two STBCs from GCOD reported by Su and Xia in [1], for 5 and 6 transmit antennas (G(5) and G(6) in [1]) with rates 7/11 and 3/5, respectively.
