In this paper, a finite element analysis of steady-state dynamic crack growth under Mode I, plane strain, small-scale yielding conditions is performed in a rate dependent plastic material characterized by the over-stress model. The main objective of the paper is to obtain theoretically the dependence of dynamic fracture toughness on crack speed. Crack propagation due to a ductile (micro-void) mechanism or a brittle (cleavage) mechanism, as well as transition from one mode to another are considered. The conversion from ductile to brittle has been observed experimentally but has received very little attention using analytical methods. Local fracture criteria based on strains and stresses are used to describe ductile and brittle fracture mechanisms. The results obtained in this paper are in general agreement with micro-structural observations of mode conversion during fracture initiation. Finally, the particular roles played by material rate sensitivity and inertia are examined in some detail.

In this paper, an overview of some recent computational studies by the authors on ductile crack initiation under mode I, dynamic loading is presented. In these studies, a large deformation finite element procedure is employed along with the viscoplastic version of the Gurson constitutive model that accounts for the micro-mechanical processes of void nucleation, growth and coalescence. A three-point bend fracture specimen subjected to impact, and a single edge notched specimen loaded by a tensile stress pulse are analysed. Several loading rates are simulated by varying the impact speed or the rise time and magnitude of the stress pulse. A simple model involving a semi-circular notch with a pre-nucleated circular hole situated ahead of it is considered. The growth of the hole and its interaction with the notch tip, which leads to plastic strain and porosity localization in the ligament connecting them, is simulated. The role of strain-rate dependence on ductile crack initiation at high loading rates, and the specimen geometry effect on the variation of dynamic fracture toughness with loading rate are Investigated.

In the present study singular fractal functions (SFF) were used to generate stress-strain plots for quasibrittle material like concrete and cement mortar and subsequently stress-strain plot of cement mortar obtained using SFF was used for modeling fracture process in concrete. The fracture surface of concrete is rough and irregular. The fracture surface of concrete is affected by the concrete's microstructure that is influenced by water cement ratio, grade of cement and type of aggregate 11-41. Also the macrostructural properties such as the size and shape of the specimen, the initial notch length and the rate of loading contribute to the shape of the fracture surface of concrete. It is known that concrete is a heterogeneous and quasi-brittle material containing micro-defects and its mechanical properties strongly relate to the presence of micro-pores and micro-cracks in concrete 11-41. The damage in concrete is believed to be mainly due to initiation and development of micro-defects with irregularity and fractal characteristics. However, repeated observations at various magnifications also reveal a variety of additional structures that fall between the `micro' and the `macro' and have not yet been described satisfactorily in a systematic manner [1-11,15-17]. The concept of singular fractal functions by Mosolov was used to generate stress-strain plot of cement concrete, cement mortar and subsequently the stress-strain plot of cement mortar was used in two-dimensional lattice model [28]. A two-dimensional lattice model was used to study concrete fracture by considering softening of matrix (cement mortar). The results obtained from simulations with lattice model show softening behavior of concrete and fairly agrees with the experimental results. The number of fractured elements are compared with the acoustic emission (AE) hits. The trend in the cumulative fractured beam elements in the lattice fracture simulation reasonably reflected the trend in the recorded AE measurements. In other words, the pattern in which AE hits were distributed around the notch has the same trend as that of the fractured elements around the notch which is in support of lattice model. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vivo biocompatibility in terms of healing of long segmental bone defect in rabbit model as well as in vitro cytotoxicity of eluates of compression-molded High density polyethylene (HDPE)hydroxyapatite (HA)-aluminum oxide (Al2O3) composite-based implant material. Based on the physical property in terms of modulus and strength properties, as reported in our recent publication, HDPE-40 wt % HA and HDPE-20 wt % HA-20 wt % Al2O3 hybrid composites were used for biocompatibility assessment. Osteoblasts cells were cultured in conditioned media, which contains varying amount of composite eluate (0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 wt %). In vitro, the eluates did not exhibit any significant negative impact on proliferation, mineralization or on morphology of human osteoblast cells. In vivo, the histological assessment revealed neobone formation at the bone/implant interface, characterized by the presence of osteoid and osteoblasts. The observation of osteoclastic activity indicates the process of bone remodeling. No inflammation to any noticeable extent was observed at the implantation site. Overall, the combination of in vitro and in vivo results are suggestive of potential biomedical application of compression-molded HDPE- 20 wt % HA- 20 wt % Al2O3 composites to heal long segmental bone defects without causing any toxicity of bone cells.

The fabrication of tissue engineering scaffolds necessitates amalgamation of a multitude of attributes including a desirable porosity to encourage vascular invasion, desired surface chemistry for controlled deposition of calcium phosphate-based mineral as well as ability to support attachment, proliferation, and differentiation of lineage specific progenitor cells. Scaffold fabrication often includes additional surface treatments to bring about desired changes in the surface chemistry. In this perspective, this review documents the important natural and synthetic scaffolds fabricated for bone tissue engineering applications in tandem with the surface treatment techniques to maneuver the biocompatibility of engineered scaffolds. This review begins with a discussion on the fundamental concepts related to biocompatibility as well as the characteristics of the biological micro-environment. The primary focus is to discuss the effects of surface micro/nano patterning on the modulation of bone cell response. Apart from reviewing a host of experimental studies reporting the functionality of osteoblast-like bone cells and stem cells on surface modified or textured bioceramic/biopolymer scaffolds, theoretical insights to predict cell behavior on a scaffold with different topographical features are also briefly analyzed.

The study of the fracture behaviour of concrete structures using the fictitious crack model requires two fracture properties of the concrete mix, namely, the size-independent specific fracture energy G(F). and the corresponding tension softening relation sigma(w) between the residual stress carrying capacity sigma and the crack opening w in the fracture process zone ahead of a real crack. In this paper, bi-linear tension softening diagrams of three different concrete mixes, ranging in compressive strength from 57 to 122 MPa whose size-independent specific fracture energy has been previously determined, have been constructed in an inverse manner based on the concept of a non-linear hinge from the load-crack mouth opening plots of notched three-point bend beams. The most important property of a bone cement or a bone substitute in load bearing orthopaedic implants is good integration with host bone with reduced bone resorption and increased bone regeneration at the implant interface. Long term implantation of metal-based joint replacements often results in corrosion and particle release, initiating chronic inflammation leading onto osteoporosis of host bone. An alternative solution is the coating of metal implants with hydroxyapatite (HA) or bioglass or the use of bulk bioglass or HA-based composites. In the above perspective, the present study reports the in vivo biocompatibility and bone healing of the strontium (Sr)-stabilized bulk glass ceramics with the nominal composition of 4.5SiO(2)-3Al(2)O(3)-1.5P(2)O(5)-3SrO-2SrF(2) during short term implantation of up to 12 weeks in rabbit animal model. The progression of healing and bone regeneration was qualitatively and quantitatively assessed using fluorescence microscopy, histological analysis and micro-computed tomography. The overall assessment of the present study establishes that the investigated glass ceramic is biocompatible in vivo with regards to local effects after short term implantation in rabbit animal model. Excellent healing was observed, which is comparable to that seen in response to a commercially available implant of HA-based bioglass alone. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The fracture characteristics of Al-Si based eutectic alloy are investigated in the unmodified and modified conditions under compression. The investigations are carried out at different strain rates and temperatures. Fracture of the alloy starts with eutectic Si particle fracture and modification plays an important role in particle fracture. The fraction of fractured particles is found to be always lesser in the modified condition than in the unmodified condition. Particle fracture increases with increase in strain. It is found that the Si particle fracture shows an increase with increase in strain rate and decreases with increase in temperature at 10% strain. Large and elongated particles show a greater tendency for fracture in the unmodified and modified conditions. Particle orientation plays an important role on fracture and the cracks are found to occur almost in a direction normal to the tensile strain imposed upon the particles by the deforming matrix in the unmodified alloy. The modified alloy shows a random distribution of fractured particles and crack orientation. The criteria of fracture based on dislocation pile-up mechanism and fiber loading explain the observed difference in particle fracture characteristics due to modification. The particle fracture for the modified alloy is also discussed in terms of Weibull statistics and the existing models of dispersion hardening. Particle/matrix interface decohesion is observed at higher strain rates and temperatures in the modified alloy. Dendritic rotation of 10 degrees is also observed at higher strain rates, which can increase the amount of particle fracture. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present work reports the biocompatibility property of injection molded HDPE-HA-Al2O3 hybrid composites. In vitro cytocompatibility results reveal that osteogenic cell viability and bone mineralization are favorably supported in a statistically significant manner on HDPE-20% HA-20% Al2O3 composite, in comparison to HDPE-40 wt.% HA or HDPE-40 wt.% Al2O3. The difference in cytocompatibility property is explained in terms of difference in substrate wettability/surface energy and importantly, both the cell proliferation at 7 days or bone mineralization at 21 days on HDPE-20% HA-20% Al2O3 composite are either comparable or better than sintered HA. The progressive healing of cylindrical femoral bone defects in rabbit animal model was assessed by implantation experiments over 1, 4 and 12 weeks. Based on the histological analysis as well as histomorphometrical evaluation, a better efficacy of HDPE-20% HA-20% Al2O3 over high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for bone regeneration and neobone formation at host bone-implant interface was established. Taken together, the present study unequivocally establishes that despite the presence of 20% Al2O3, HDPE-based hybrid composites are as biocompatible as HA in vitro or better than HDPE in vivo.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the possibility to construct tissue-engineered bone repair scaffolds with pore size distributions using rapid prototyping techniques. Design/methodology/approach - The fabrication of porous scaffolds with complex porous architectures represents a major challenge in tissue engineering and the design aspects to mimic complex pore shape as well as spatial distribution of pore sizes of natural hard tissue remain unexplored. In this context, this work aims to evaluate the three-dimensional printing process to study its potential for scaffold fabrication as well as some innovative design of homogeneously porous or gradient porous scaffolds is described and such design has wider implication in the field of bone tissue engineering. Findings - The present work discusses biomedically relevant various design strategies with spatial/radial gradient in pore sizes as well as with different pore sizes and with different pore geometries. Originality/value - One of the important implications of the proposed novel design scheme would be the development of porous bioactive/biodegradable composites with gradient pore size, porosity, composition and with spatially distributed biochemical stimuli so that stem cells loaded into scaffolds would develop into complex tissues such as those at the bone-cartilage interface.
