Transparent glasses of various compositions in the system (100 -x)(Li2B4O7)-x(Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30) (5 <= x <= 20, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as-quenched samples was established by differential thermal analyses (DTA). X-ray powder diffraction studies confirmed the as-quenched glasses to be amorphous and the heat-treated to be nanocrystalline. Controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 500 degrees C for 8 h yielded nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of these samples established the size of the crystallites to be in the nano-range and confirmed the phase to be that of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 (BLTN) which was, initially, identified by X-ray powder diffraction. The frequency, temperature and compositional dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the glasses and glass nanocrystal composites were investigated in the 100 Hz to 10 MHz frequency range. Electrical relaxations were analyzed using the electric modulus formalisms. The imaginary part of electric modulus spectra was modeled using an approximate solution of Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts relation. The frequency dependent electrical conductivity was rationalized using Jonscher's power law. The activation energy associated with the dc conductivity was ascribed to the motion of Li+ ions in the glass matrix. The activation energy associated with dielectric relaxation was almost equal to that of the dc conductivity, indicating that the same species took part in both the processes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Electronic transport in the high temperature paramagnetic regime of the colossal magnetoresistive oxides, La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3), A=Ca, Sr, Ba, x similar or equal to 0.1-0.3, has been investigated using resistivity measurements. The main motivation for this work is to relook into the actual magnitude of the activation energy for transport in a number of manganites and study its variation as a function of hole doping (x), average A-site cation radius (< r(A)>), cationic disorder (sigma(2)) and strain (epsilon(zz)). We show that contrary to current practice, the description of a single activation energy in this phase is not entirely accurate. Our results clearly reveal a strong dependence of the activation energy on the hole doping as well as disorder. Comparing the results across different substituent species with different < r(A)> reveals the importance of sigma(2) as a metric to qualify any analysis based on (r(A)). (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents a study of kinematic and force singularities in parallel manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms and their relationship to accessibility and controllability of such manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms, Parallel manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms are classified according to their degrees of freedom, number of output Cartesian variables used to describe their motion and the number of actuated joint inputs. The singularities in the workspace are obtained by considering the force transformation matrix which maps the forces and torques in joint space to output forces and torques ill Cartesian space. The regions in the workspace which violate the small time local controllability (STLC) and small time local accessibility (STLA) condition are obtained by deriving the equations of motion in terms of Cartesian variables and by using techniques from Lie algebra. We show that for fully actuated manipulators when the number ofactuated joint inputs is equal to the number of output Cartesian variables, and the force transformation matrix loses rank, the parallel manipulator does not meet the STLC requirement. For the case where the number of joint inputs is less than the number of output Cartesian variables, if the constraint forces and torques (represented by the Lagrange multipliers) become infinite, the force transformation matrix loses rank. Finally, we show that the singular and non-STLC regions in the workspace of a parallel manipulator and closed-loop mechanism can be reduced by adding redundant joint actuators and links. The results are illustrated with the help of numerical examples where we plot the singular and non-STLC/non-STLA regions of parallel manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms belonging to the above mentioned classes. The effect of nonmagnetic Ti4+ substitution for Mn4+ on magnetic ordering of La1-xPbxMn1-yTiyO3 (x = 0.15,0.26, and 0.4; 0 less than or equal to y less than or equal to x )has been studied. The ferromagnetic transition temperature and the magnetization decrease with increasing amount of titanium. Complete substitution of Mn4+ by Ti4+, for x = y, excludes the Mn3+-O-Mn4+ double exchange. However, these compounds still show ferromagnetism if the dilution of the Mn sublattice by Ti is small enough (y less than or equal to 0.2). This ferromagnetism probably originates from a ferromagnetic Mn3+-O-Mn3+ superexchange. A thorough study of magnetic properties including AC magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, temperature dependence of coercivity and relaxation of remanent magnetization has been carried out and gives evidence of cluster spin glass behaviour for La0.6Pb0.4Mn0.6Ti0.4O3. Local texture and microstructure was investigated to study the deformation mechanisms during equal channel angular extrusion of a high purity nickel single crystal of initial cube orientation. A detailed texture and microstructure analysis by various diffraction techniques revealed the complexity of the deformation patterns in different locations of the billet. A modeling approach, taking into account slip system activity, was used to interpret the development of this heterogeneous deformation.

The microstructure, thermal stability and hardness of ultra-fine grained (UFG) Ni produced by 12 passes of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) through the route Bc were studied. Comparing the microstructure and hardness of the as-ECAPed samples with the published data on UFG Ni obtained after 8 passes of ECAP through the route Bc reveals a smaller average grain size (230 nm in the present case compared with 270 nm in 8-pass Ni), significantly lower dislocation density (1.08 x 10(14) m(-2) compared with 9 x 10(14) m(-2) in 8-pass Ni) and lower hardness (2 GPa compared with 2.45 GPa for 8-pass Ni). Study of the thermal stability of the 12-pass UFG Ni revealed that recovery is dominant in the temperature range 150-250A degrees C and recrystallisation occurred at temperatures > 250 A degrees C. The UFG microstructure is relatively stable up to about 400 A degrees C. Due to the lower dislocation density and consequently a lower stored energy, the recrystallisation of 12-pass ECAP Ni occurred at a higher temperature (similar to 250 A degrees C) compared with the 8-pass Ni (similar to 200 A degrees C). In the 12-pass Nickel, hardness variation shows that its dependence on grain size is inversely linear rather than the common grain size(-0.5) dependence.

A series of oxides LnBaCuCoO(5) (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Dy, Gd, Ho and Er) have been synthesized by ceramic method. The oxides crystallize in a tetragonal structure, isostructural to YBaCuCoO5. All the oxides in the series are semiconducting. IR spectra of these oxides show distinct absorption bands at 630 cm(-1), 550 cm(-1) and 330 cm(-1) which are assigned to E, A(2) and A(1) modes respectively. Doping of holes in these oxides, by calcium substitution in Er1-xCaxBaCuCoO5-x (up to x similar or equal to 0.3) was done but, these oxides did not show metallic behaviour.

We report here the results of structural and vibrational studies on the solid solution Fe1 ? xNixPS3 (1 greater-or-equal, slanted x greater-or-equal, slanted 0) systems. From the structural analysis, we show that there is a lattice compaction as the composition x is varied from 0 to 1, the basic lattice symmetry being maintained. We find that the compaction is more in the basal plane. These subtle structural changes are also reflected in the vibrational bands. We observed splitting of certain bands due to these small changes in the lattice constants, which we explained as arising from a correlation splitting. These changes in the vibrational bands have also been seen on cooling where there is a preferential thermal compaction in the basal plane compared to that perpendicular to the plane.

We report studies of magnetocaloric effect in lanthanum cobaltate doped with different Sr-concentrations, La1-xSrxCoO3 (0.05 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.4). The study has revealed that La0.6Sr0.4CoO3, which exhibits a moderately large value of maximum entropy change of about 1.45 J/kg/K in 1.5 T DC-fieid around its Curie temperature (of 235 K), can be used as an active magnetic refrigerant (AMR) material at similar to 2.35 K. The complex singularity associated with a crack at the interface between two dissimilar, isotropic and homogeneous materials leads to mathematical artefacts, such as stress oscillations and crack face interpenetrations in the vicinity of the crack tip. To avoid these unrealistic features, Sinclair (Sinclair GB. On the stress singularity at an interface crack. International Journal of Fracture 1980;16(2):111-9) assumed a finite crack opening angle (COA) such that the singularity lambda became real equal to 1/2. This paper extends the COA model by considering real singularities not necessarily equal to 1/2. When COA is 0 degrees: the interface crack singularity is complex with a real part equal to 1/2. On increasing COA, the imaginary part of the singularity decreases and becomes zero at a threshold value of COA; at this point, the singularity is a real, repeated value. A further increase in COA results in a pair of real singularities. Different crack opening configurations and material combinations are studied, and results presented for threshold COAs and associated values of singularity. Stress analyses for these three regimes: (a) complex, (b) real pair and (c) real repeated singularities, are reported. It is seen that additional complexities are present in the last case. Typical results for stress fields are also included for comparing with standard fields. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fine particle strontium substituted lanthanum ferrites La1-xSrxFeO3, where x = 0.0-1.0, have been synthesized by the solution combustion method using corresponding metal nitrates, oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) or tetra formal tris azine (TFTA). Formation of La1-xSrxFeO3 was confirmed by the XRD and the fine particle nature of the ferrites investigated using SEM, particle size analysis and BET surface area measurements. La1-xSrxFeO3 (up to x = 0-0.4) exhibited low resistivity near the Neel temperatures. La1-xSrxFeO3 with x greater than or equal to 0.8 when used as bifunctional electrodes, showed oxygen evolution and reduction activity comparable with the orthoferrites prepared by the conventional solid state method. The crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of strontium-doped neodymium ferrite (Nd1-xSrxFeO3-delta where 0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.4) were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic perovskite structure. The lattice parameters were determined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction. The orthorhombic distortion decreases with increasing Sr substitution. The pseudocubic lattice parameter shows a minimum at x=0.3. The thermal expansion curves for x=0.2-0.4 displayed rapid increase in slope at higher temperatures. The electrical conductivity increased with Sr content and temperature. The calculated activation energies for electrical conduction decreased with increasing x. The electrical conductivity can be described by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The charge compensation for divalent ion on the A-site is provided by the formation of Fe4+ ions on the B site and vacancies on the oxygen sublattice. The results indicate two defect domains: for low values of x, the predominant defect is Fe4+ ions, whereas for higher values of x, oxygen vacancies dominate. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of the solid solution Nd0.7Sr0.3Fe1-xCoxO3 for 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.8 were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic perovskite structure. The lattice parameters were determined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). The pseudo-cubic lattice constant decreased continuously with x. The average linear thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) in the temperature range from 573 to 973 K was found to increase with x. The thermal expansion curves for all values of x displayed rapid increase in slope at high temperatures. The electrical conductivity increased with x for the entire temperature range of measurement. The calculated activation energy values indicate that electrical conduction takes place primarily by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The charge compensation for the divalent ion on the A-site is provided by the formation of Fe4+ ions on the B-site (in preference to Co4+ ions) and vacancies on the oxygen sublattice for low values of x. The large increase in the conductivity with x in the range from 0.6 to 0.8 is attributed to the substitution of Fe4+ ions by Co4+ ions. The Fe site has a lower small polaron site energy than Co and hence behaves like a carrier trap, thereby drastically reducing the conductivity. The non-linear behaviour in the dependence of log sigmaT with reciprocal temperature can be attributed to the generation of additional charge carriers with increasing temperature by the charge disproportionation of Co3+ ions.
