The synergistic effect of compressive growth stresses and reactor chemistry, silane presence, on dislocation bending at the very early stages of GaN growth has been studied using in-situ stress measurements and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. A single 100 nm Si-doped GaN layer is found to be more effective than a 1 mu m linearly graded AlGaN buffer layer in reducing dislocation density and preventing the subsequent layer from transitioning to a tensile stress. 1 mu m crack-free GaN layers with a dislocation density of 7 x 10(8)/cm(2), with 0.13 nm surface roughness and no enhancement in n-type background are demonstrated over 2 inch substrates using this simple transition scheme. Two different soft-chemical, self-assembly-based solution approaches are employed to grow zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods with controlled texture. The methods used involve seeding and growth on a substrate. Nanorods with various aspect ratios (1-5) and diameters (15-65 nm) are grown. Obtaining highly oriented rods is determined by the way the substrate is mounted within the chemical bath. Furthermore, a preheat and centrifugation step is essential for the optimization of the growth solution. In the best samples, we obtain ZnO nanorods that are almost entirely oriented in the (002) direction; this is desirable since electron mobility of ZnO is highest along this crystallographic axis. When used as the buffer layer of inverted organic photovoltaics (I-OPVs), these one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures offer: (a) direct paths for charge transport and (b) high interfacial area for electron collection. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of ZnO nanorods are studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, the surface chemical features of ZnO films are studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. Using as-grown ZnO, inverted OPVs are fabricated and characterized. For improving device performance, the ZnO nanorods are subjected to UV-ozone irradiation. UV-ozone treated ZnO nanorods show: (i) improvement in optical transmission, (ii) increased wetting of active organic components, and (iii) increased concentration of Zn-O surface bonds. These observations correlate well with improved device performance. The devices fabricated using these optimized buffer layers have an efficiency of similar to 3.2% and a fill factor of 0.50; this is comparable to the best I-OPVs reported that use a P3HT-PCBM active layer.

The role of a charge buffer layer in the superconductivity of high-T-c materials is best studied by cationic substitutions. In this work, the chain copper in YBCO single crystals is substituted by Co3+ ion and consequent effect on superconducting transition temperature (T-c) studied. The T-c is measured using non-resonant Microwave Absorption technique, which is a highly sensitive and contactless method. It is seen that T-c of as-grown crystals is considerably enhanced by cobalt doping in low concentration regime. In contrast, higher T-c is achieved in undoped crystals only after extended oxygen anneal. When dopant concentration increases beyond an optimal value, T-c decreases and the system does not show superconductivity when cobalt content is high (x > 0.5 in YBa2Cu3-xCOxO7+/-delta). This behaviour consequent to cobalt substitution is discussed with reference to the apical oxygen model. Optimal cobalt doping can be thought of as an alternative to extended oxygen anneal in as-grown crystals of YBCO.

Hard, low stress diamond-like carbon films have been deposited by plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition technique, The various substrates include soft IR components like ZnS and ZnSe windows, Gaseous precursors such as propene, ethyl alcohol and acetone have been used to synthesize the films to study the nature of precursors in determining the film compatibility with the underlying component (substrate), The residual compressive stresses, the Young's modulus and the adhesion energy of the films have been estimated to be 10(10) dynes/cm(2), 10(10) N/m(2) and 1000 ergs/cm(2) respectively. To alleviate film failure, a study on the effects of additive gases such as hydrogen and the use of buffer layers such as ZrO2, has been undertaken, The diamond-like carbon films produced here are hard (5000 kg/mm(2)), specularly smooth in the wavelength region from 2.5 mu m to 20 mu m, with no microstructural features and have excellent adhesion on ZnS and ZnSe windows. The figure of merit of these films for aero-space applications has been evaluated by subjecting the film-buffer layer ZnS or ZnSe composite stack to wind, dust and rain erosion studies and by establishing the integrity of the specular IR transmittance of the stack upto 16 or 20 mu m as the case may be.

High?quality Ag?doped YBa2Cu3O7?? thin films have been grown by laser ablation on R?plane ?1102? sapphire without any buffer layer. Thin films have been found to be highly c?axis oriented with Tc=90 K, transition width ?T?1 K, and transport Jc=1.2×106 A?cm?2 at 77 K in self?field conditions. The microwave surface resistance of these films measured on patterned microstrip resonators has been found to be 530 ?? at 10 GHz at 77 K which is the lowest reported on unbuffered sapphire. Improved in?plane epitaxy and reduced reaction rate between the substrate and the film caused due to Ag in the film are believed to be responsible for this greatly improved microwave surface resistance. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

The composition, structural, electrical, and optical properties of as-grown and heat treated tin-mono-sulfide (SnS) ultra-thin films have been studied. The ultra-thin SnS films were prepared on glass substrates by thermal resistive evaporation technique. All the SnS films contained nanocrystallites and exhibited p-type conductivity with a low Hall-mobility, <50 cm(2)/Vs. All these films are highly tin rich in nature and exhibited orthorhombic crystal structure. As compared to other films, the SnS films annealed at 300 degrees C showed a low electrical resistivity of similar to 36 Omega cm with an optical band gap of similar to 1.98 eV. The observed electrical and optical properties of all the films are discussed based on their composition and structural parameters. These nanocrystalline ultra-thin SnS films could be expected as a buffer layer for the development of tandem solar cell devices due to their low-resistivity and high absorbability with an optimum band gap. Hexagonal Ge3N4 layer was prepared on Ge surface by in situ direct atomic source nitridation and it is promising buffer layer to grow GaN on Ge (111). The valence band offset (VBO) of GaN/Ge3N4/Ge heterojunctions is determined by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The valence band (VB) of Ge3N4 is found to be 0.38?+/-?0.04?eV above the GaN valance band and 1.14?+/-?0.04?eV below the Ge. The GaN/Ge3N4 and Ge3N4/Ge are found type-II and type-I heterojunctions, respectively. The exact measurements of the VBO and conduction band offset (CBO) are important for use of GaN/Ge3N4/Ge (111) heterosystems.

Electrodes and the nature of their contact with organic materials play a crucial role in the realization of efficient optoelectronic components. Whether the injection (organic light-emitting diodes - OLEDs) or collection (organic photovoltaic cells - OPV cells) of carriers, contacts must be as efficient as possible. To do this, it is customary to refer to electrode surface treatment and/or using a buffer layer all things to optimize the contact. Efficiency of organic photovoltaic cells based on organic electron donor/organic electron acceptor junctions can be strongly improved when the transparent conductive anode is coated with a buffer layer (ABL). We show that an ultra-thin gold (0.5 nm) or a thin molybdenum oxide (3-5 nm) can be used as efficient ABL. However, the effects of these ABL depend on the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of different electron donors of the OPV cells. The results indicate that, in the case of metal ABL, a good matching between the work function of the anode and the highest occupied molecular orbital of the donor material is the major factor limiting the hole transfer efficiency. Indeed, gold is efficient as ABL only when the HOMO of the organic donor is close to its work function Phi(Au). MoO3 has a wider field of application as ABL than gold. The role of the oxide is not so clearly understood than that of Au, different models proposed to interpret the experimental results are discussed.

The Southern Marginal Zone of the Limpopo Complex is composed of granite-greenstone cratonic rocks reworked by a Neoarchean high-grade tectono-metamorphic event. Petrographic and mineral chemical characterization of an Al-Mg granulite from this zone is presented here. The granulite has a gneissic fabric with distinct Al-rich and Si-rich layers, with the former preserving the unusual lamellar (random and regular subparallel) intergrowths of corundum and symplectic intergrowth of spinel with orthopyroxene. The Al-rich layer preserves mineral assemblages such as rutile with orthopyroxene + sillimanite +/- A quartz, Al-rich orthopyroxene (similar to 11 wt%), spinel + quartz, and corundum in possible equilibrium with quartz, while the Si-rich layer preserves antiperthites and orthopyroxene + sillimanite +/- A quartz, all considered diagnostic of ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism. Application of Al-in-opx thermometry, ternary feldspar thermometry and construction of suitable pressure-temperature phase diagrams, compositional and model proportion isopleth results indicate P-T conditions as high as similar to 1,050-1,100 A degrees C, and similar to 10-12 kbars for the Al-Mg granulite. Our report of ultrahigh-temperature conditions is significant considering that the very high temperature was reached during decompression of an otherwise high-pressure granulite complex (clockwise P-T path), whereas most other ultrahigh-temperature granulites are linked to magma underplating at the base of the crust (counterclockwise P-T path).

Tin sulphide (SnS) quantum dots of size ranging from 2.4 to 14.4 nm are prepared by chemical precipitation method in aqueous media. Growth of the SnS particles is monitored by controlling the deposition time. Both XRD and SAED patterns confirm that the particles possess orthorhombic structure. The uncapped SnS particles showed secondary phases like Sn2S3 and SnS2 which is visible in the SAED pattern. From the electrochemical characterization. HOMO-LUMO levels of both TiO2 and SnS are determined and the band alignment is found to be favorable for electron transfer from SnS to TiO2. Moreover, the HOMO-LUMO levels varied for different particle sizes. Solar cell is fabricated by sensitizing porous TiO2 thin film with SnS QDs. Cell structure is characterized with and without buffer layer between FTO and TiO2. Without the buffer layer, cell showed an open circuit voltage (V-oc) of 504 mV and short circuit current density (J(sc)) of 2.3 mA/cm(2) under AM1.5 condition. The low fill factor of this structure (15%) is seen to be increased drastically to 51%, on the incorporation of the buffer layer. The cell characteristics are analyzed using two different size quantum dots. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Atomic layer deposition was used to obtain TiO2 thin films on Si (100) and fused quartz, using a novel metal organic precursor. The films were grown at 400 degrees C, varying the amount of oxygen used as the reactive gas. X-ray diffraction showed the films to be crystalline, with a mixture of anatase and rutile phases. To investigate their optical properties, ellipsometric measurements were made in the UV-Vis-NIR range (300-1700 nm). Spectral distribution of various optical constants like refractive index (n), absorption index (k), transmittance (T), reflectance (R), absorption (A) were calculated by employing Bruggemann's effective medium approximation (BEMA) and Maxwell-Garnet effective medium approximation, in conjunction with the Cauchy and Forouhi-Bloomer (FB) dispersion relations. A layered optical model has been proposed which gives the thickness, elemental and molecular composition, amorphicity and roughness (morphology) of the TiO2 film surface and and the film/substrate interface, as a function of oxygen flow rate The spectral distribution of the optical band gap (E-g(opt)), complex dielectric constants (epsilon' and epsilon''), and optical conductivity (sigma(opt)), has also been determined.

dThe work looks at the response to three-point loading of carbon-epoxy (CF-EP) composites with inserted buffer strip (BS) material. Short beam Shear tests were performed to study the load-deflection response as well as fracture features through macroscopy on the CF-EP system containing the interleaved PTFE-coated fabric material. Significant differences were noticed in the response of the CF-EP system to the bending process consequent to the architectural modification. It was inferred that introduction of small amounts of less adherent layers of material at specific locations causes a decrement in the load carrying capability. Further the number and the ease with which interface separation occurs is found to depend on the extent to which the inserted layer is present in either single or multiple layer positions.

The dependence of barrier height on the metal work function of metal-SiO2-p-Si Schottky barrier diodes was investigated and nonlinearity was found. This is explained by the theoretical model proposed recently by Chattopadhyay and Daw. The values of interface trap density and fixed charge density of the insulating layer of the diodes were calculated using this model and found to be appreciably different from those estimated by the usual method.

The sliding-wear behavior of Al2O3-SiC-Al composites prepared by melt oxidation against a steel counterface has been recorded in a pin-on-disk machine. At high speeds and pressures (10 m/s, 20 MPa), friction and wear appear to be principally controlled by the in-situ formation of an interfacial film that consists of a layer of Fe3O4. The formation of this him is examined as a function of sliding speed, lubrication, and composite microstructure. A model is proposed in which high surface temperatures cause the preferential extrusion of aluminum from the composite onto the pin/disk interface. This promotes the adhesive pickup of iron and its oxidation to form a stable tribologically beneficial layer of Fe3O4.

The use of an instrumented impact test set-up to evaluate the influence of water ingress on the impact response of a carbon–epoxy (C–E) laminated composite system containing discontinuous buffer strips (BS) has been examined. The data on the BS-free C–E sample in dry conditions are used as reference to compare with the data derived from those immersed in water. The work demonstrated the utility of an instrumented impact test set-up in characterising the response, first owing to the architectural difference due to introduction of buffer strips and then due to the presence of an additional phase in the form of water ingressed into the sample. The presence of water was found to enhance the energy absorption characteristics of the C–E system with BS insertions. It was also noticed that with an increasing number of BS layer insertions, the load–time plots displayed characteristic changes. The ductility indices (DI) were found to display a lower value for the water immersed samples compared to the dry ones.
